Abstract:It is shown that the discrepancy function for point distributions on a torus is expressed by an explicit formula in terms of its mean values on sub-tori. As an application of this formula, a simple proof of a theorem of Lev on the equivalence of $L_{\infty}$- and shifted $L_q$-discrepancies is given.

Abstract:We study the periodic $L_2$-discrepancy of point sets in the $d$-dimensional torus. This discrepancy is intimately connected with the root-mean-square $L_2$-discrepancy of shifted point sets, with the notion of diaphony, and with the worst case error of cubature formulas for the integration of periodic functions in Sobolev spaces of mixed smoothness. In discrepancy theory many results are based on averaging arguments. In order to make such results relevant for applications one requires explicit constructions of point sets with ``average'' discrepancy. In our main result we study Korobov's $p$-sets and show that this point sets have periodic $L_2$-discrepancy of average order. This result is related to an open question of Novak and Woźniakowski.

Abstract:We investigate the joint distribution of $L$-functions on the line $ \sigma= \frac12 + \frac1{G(T)}$ and $ t \in [ T, 2T]$, where $ \log \log T \leq G(T) \leq \frac{ \log T}{ ( \log \log T)^2 } $. We obtain an upper bound on the discrepancy between the joint distribution of $L$-functions and that of their random models. As an application we prove an asymptotic expansion of a multi-dimensional version of Selberg's central limit theorem for $L$-functions on $ \sigma= \frac12 + \frac1{G(T)}$ and $ t \in [ T, 2T]$, where $ ( \log T)^\epsilon \leq G(T) \leq \frac{ \log T}{ ( \log \log T)^{2+\epsilon } } $ for $ \epsilon > 0$.

Abstract:In this paper, we first study the strong Birkhoff Ergodic Theorem forsubharmonic functions with the Brjuno-Rüssmann shift on the Torus. Then, weapply it to prove the large deviation theorems for the finite scale Dirichletdeterminants of quasi-periodic analytic Jacobi operators with this frequency.It shows that the Brjuno-Rüssmann function, which reflects the irrationalityof the frequency, plays the key role in these theorems via the smallestdeviation. At last, as an application, we obtain a distribution of theeigenvalues of the Jacobi operators with Dirichlet boundary conditions, whichalso depends on the smallest deviation, essentially on the irrationality of thefrequency.
On a discrete approach to lower bounds in discrepancy theory

Abstract:In the present paper we prove that some renowned lower bounds in discrepancy theory admit a discrete analogue. Namely, we prove that the lower bound of the discrepancy for corners in the unit cube due to Roth holds true also for a suitable finite family of corners. We also prove two analogous results for the discrepancy on the torus with respect to squares and balls.

Abstract:The aim of the present paper is to derive effective discrepancy estimates for the distribution of rational points on general semisimple algebraic group varieties, in general families of subsets and at arbitrarily small scales. We establish mean-square, almost sure and uniform estimates for the discrepancy with explicit error bounds. We also prove an analogue of W. Schmidt's theorem, which establishes effective almost sure asymptotic counting of rational solutions to Diophantine inequalities in the Euclidean space. We formulate and prove a version of it for rational points on the group variety, with an effective bound which in some instances can be expected to be the best possible.

Abstract:For the uniform random regular directed graph we prove concentration inequalities for (1) codegrees and (2) the number of edges passing from one set of vertices to another. As a consequence, we can deduce discrepancy properties for the distribution of edges essentially matching results for Erdős-Rényi digraphs obtained from Chernoff-type bounds. The proofs make use of the method of exchangeable pairs, developed for concentration of measure by Chatterjee. Exchangeable pairs are constructed using two involutions on the set of regular digraphs: a well-known "simple switching" operation, as well as a novel "reflection" operation.

Abstract:A symmetrized lattice of $2n$ points in terms of an irrational real number $\alpha$ is considered in the unit square, as in the theorem of Davenport. If $\alpha$ is a quadratic irrational, the square of the $L^2$ discrepancy is found to be $c( \alpha ) \log n + O \left( \log \log n \right)$ for a computable positive constant $c( \alpha )$. For the golden ratio $\varphi$, the value $\sqrt{c (\varphi ) \log n}$ yields the smallest $L^2$ discrepancy of any sequence of explicitly constructed finite point sets in the unit square. If the partial quotients $a_k$ of $\alpha$ grow at most polynomially fast, the $L^2$ discrepancy is found in terms of $a_k$ up to an explicitly bounded error term. It is also shown that certain generalized Dedekind sums can be approximated using the same methods. For a special generalized Dedekind sum with arguments $a, b$ an asymptotic formula in terms of the partial quotients of $\frac{a}{b}$ is proved.

Constructing Optimal $L_{\infty}$ Star Discrepancy Sets

Abstract:The $L_{\infty}$ star discrepancy is a very well-studied measure used to quantify the uniformity of a point set distribution. Constructing optimal point sets for this measure is seen as a very hard problem in the discrepancy community. Indeed, optimal point sets are, up to now, known only for $n\leq 6$ in dimension 2 and $n \leq 2$ for higher dimensions. We introduce in this paper mathematical programming formulations to construct point sets with as low $L_{\infty}$ star discrepancy as possible. Firstly, we present two models to construct optimal sets and show that there always exist optimal sets with the property that no two points share a coordinate. Then, we provide possible extensions of our models to other measures, such as the extreme and periodic discrepancies. For the $L_{\infty}$ star discrepancy, we are able to compute optimal point sets for up to 21 points in dimension 2 and for up to 8 points in dimension 3. For $d=2$ and $n\ge 7$ points, these point sets have around a 50% lower discrepancy than the current best point sets, and show a very different structure.

On the distribution of the error terms in the divisor and circle problems

Abstract:We study the distribution functions of several classical error terms in analytic number theory, focusing on the remainder term in the Dirichlet divisor problem $\Delta(x)$. We first bound the discrepancy between the distribution function of $\Delta(x)$ and that of a corresponding probabilistic random model, improving results of Heath-Brown and Lau. We then determine the shape of its large deviations in a certain uniform range, which we believe to be the limit of our method, given our current knowledge about the linear relations among the $\sqrt{n}$ for square-free positive integers $n$. Finally, we obtain similar results for the error terms in the Gauss circle problem and in the second moment of the Riemann zeta function on the critical line.

Abstract:In this note we study estimates from below of the single radius spherical discrepancy in the setting of compact two-point homogeneous spaces. Namely, given a d -dimensional manifold endowed with a distance so that is a two-point homogeneous space and with the Riemannian measure , we provide conditions on r such that if denotes the discrepancy of the ball of radius r , then, for an absolute constant and for every set of points , one has . The conditions on r that we have depend on the dimension d of the manifold and cannot be achieved when . Nonetheless, we prove a weaker estimate for such dimensions as well.

Abstract:The $L_p$-discrepancy is a classical quantitative measure for the irregularity of distribution of an $N$-element point set in the $d$-dimensional unit cube. Its inverse for dimension $d$ and error threshold $\varepsilon \in (0,1)$ is the number of points in $[0,1)^d$ that is required such that the minimal normalized $L_p$-discrepancy is less or equal $\varepsilon$. It is well known, that the inverse of $L_2$-discrepancy grows exponentially fast with the dimension $d$, i.e., we have the curse of dimensionality, whereas the inverse of $L_{\infty}$-discrepancy depends exactly linearly on $d$. The behavior of inverse of $L_p$-discrepancy for general $p \not\in \{2,\infty\}$ was an open problem since many years. Recently, the curse of dimensionality for the $L_p$-discrepancy was shown for an infinite sequence of values $p$ in $(1,2]$, but the general result seemed to be out of reach. In the present paper we show that the $L_p$-discrepancy suffers from the curse of dimensionality for all $p$ in $(1,\infty)$ and only the case $p=1$ is still open. This result follows from a more general result that we show for the worst-case error of positive quadrature formulas for an anchored Sobolev space of once differentiable functions in each variable whose first mixed derivative has finite $L_q$-norm, where $q$ is the Hölder conjugate of $p$.

Central limit theorems for lattice point counting on tessellated domains

Abstract:Following the approach of Bj$\ddot{\text{o}}$rklund and Gorodnik, we have considered the discrepancy function for lattice point counting on domains that can be nicely tessellated by the action of a diagonal semigroup. We have shown that suitably normalized discrepancy functions for lattice point counting on certain tessellated domains satisfy a non-degenerate central limit theorem. Furthermore, we have also addressed the same problem for affine and congruence lattice point counting, proving analogous non-degenerate central limit theorems for them. The main ingredients of the proofs are the method of cumulants and quantitative multiple mixing estimates.

Abstract:Let denote the space of cusp forms of even integer weight k and level N . We prove an asymptotic for the Petersson trace formula for under an appropriate condition. Using the non-vanishing of a Kloosterman sum involved in the asymptotic, we give a lower bound for discrepancy in the Sato–Tate distribution for levels not divisible by 8. This generalizes a result of Jung and Sardari (Math Ann 378(1–2):513–557, 2020, Theorem 1.6) for squarefree levels. An analogue of the Sato-Tate distribution was obtained by Omar and Mazhouda (Ramanujan J 20(1):81–89, 2009, Theorem 3) for the distribution of eigenvalues where f is a Hecke eigenform and p is a prime number. As an application of the above-mentioned asymptotic, we obtain a sequence of weights such that discrepancy in the analogue distribution obtained in Omar and Mazhouda (Ramanujan J 20(1):81–89, 2009) has a lower bound.

Abstract:Let $f:\mathbb{N}\to \mathbb{D}$ be a multiplicative function. Under the merely necessary assumption that $f$ is non-pretentious (in the sense of Granville and Soundararajan), we show that for any pair of distinct integer shifts $h_1,h_2$ the two-point correlation $$\frac{1}{x}\sum_{n\leq x}{f(n+h_1)\overline{f}(n+h_2)}$$ tends to $0$ along a set of $x\in\mathbb{N}$ of full upper logarithmic density. We also show that the same result holds for the $k$-point correlations $$\frac{1}{x}\sum_{n\leq x}{f(n+h_1)\cdots f(n+h_k)}$$ if $k$ is odd and $f$ is a real-valued non-pretentious function. Previously, the vanishing of correlations was known only under stronger non-pretentiousness hypotheses on $f$ by the works of Tao, and Tao and the third author. We derive several applications, including: (i) A classification of $\pm 1$-valued completely multiplicative functions that omit a length four sign pattern, solving a 1974 conjecture of R.H. Hudson. (ii) A proof that a class of "Liouville-like" functions satisfies the unweighted Elliott conjecture of all orders, solving a problem of de la Rue. (iii) Constructing examples of multiplicative $f:\mathbb{N}\to \{-1,0,1\}$ with a given (unique) Furstenberg system, answering a question of Lemańczyk. (iv) A density version of the Erdős discrepancy theorem of Tao.

Abstract:Abstract We undertake a detailed study of the $$L^2$$ L 2 discrepancy of 2-dimensional Korobov lattices and their irrational analogues, either with or without symmetrization. We give a full characterization of such lattices with optimal $$L^2$$ L 2 discrepancy in terms of the continued fraction partial quotients, and compute the precise asymptotics whenever the continued fraction expansion is explicitly known, such as for quadratic irrationals or Euler’s number e . In the metric theory, we find the asymptotics of the $$L^2$$ L 2 discrepancy for almost every irrational, and the limit distribution for randomly chosen rational and irrational lattices.

Abstract:Given two Clark-Aleksandrov measures $\sigma^1$ and $\sigma^2$ on $\bT^2$, we prove a theorem relating the property that $\sigma^1 \ll \sigma^2$ to containment of a concrete function in a certain de Branges-Rovnyak space. We show that our theorem is applicable for all rational inner functions on $\bD^2$, and we provide several examples of how the theorem can be applied to investigate Clark-Aleksandrov measures related to such functions.
