Abstract:In work by Thistlethwaite and Tsvietkova, an alternative method for solving for the hyperbolic structure of the complement of a link in the 3-sphere is developed. We generalize this method to other classes of links, in particular links in the thickened torus and fully augmented links.

Abstract: We prove the existence of global sections trivializing the Hodge bundles on the Hodge metric completion space of the Torelli space of Calabi--Yau manifolds, a global splitting property of these Hodge bundles. We also prove that a compact Calabi--Yau manifold can not be deformed to its complex conjugate. These results answer certain open questions in the subject. A general result about the period map to be bi-holomorphic from the Hodge metric completion space of the Torelli space of Calabi--Yau type manifolds to their period domains is proved and applied to the cases of K$3$ surfaces, cubic fourfolds, and hyperk\"ahler manifolds.

Abstract:We show that the hyperbolic structure on a closed, orientable, hyperbolic 3-manifold can be constructed from a solution to the hyperbolic gluing equations using any triangulation with essential edges. The key ingredients in the proof are Thurston's spinning construction and a volume rigidity result attributed by Dunfield to Thurston, Gromov and Goldman. As an application, we show that this gives a new algorithm to detect hyperbolic structures on closed 3-manifolds.

Abstract:When restricted to alternating links, both Heegaard Floer and Khovanov homology concentrate along a single diagonal -grading. This leads to the broader class of thin links that one would like to characterize without reference to the invariant in question. We provide a relative version of thinness for tangles and use this to characterize thinness via tangle decompositions along Conway spheres. These results bear a strong resemblance to the L-space gluing theorem for three-manifolds with torus boundary. Our results are based on certain immersed curve invariants for Conway tangles, namely the Heegaard Floer invariant and the Khovanov invariant that were developed by the authors in previous works.

Abstract:In a group, a generalized torsion element is a non-identity element whose some non-empty finite product of its conjugates yields the identity. Such an element is an obstruction for a group to be bi-orderable. We show that the Weeks manifold, the figure-eight sister manifold, and the complement of Whitehead sister link admit generalized torsion elements in their fundamental groups. In particular, the Whitehead sister link, which is the pretzel link of type (−2,3,8) , can be generalized to hyperbolic pretzel links of type (−2,3,2n) (n≥4) . These give the first examples of hyperbolic links whose link groups admit generalized torsion elements.

Geometry of fundamental shadow link complements and applications to the 1-loop conjecture

Abstract:We construct a geometric ideal triangulation for every fundamental shadow link complement and solve the gluing equation explicitly in terms of the logarithmic holonomies of the meridians of the link for any generic character in the distinguished component of the $\mathrm{PSL}(2;\mathbb{C})$-character variety of the link complement. As immediate applications, we obtain a new formula for the volume of a hyperideal tetrahedron in terms of its dihedral angles, and a formula for the volume of hyperbolic 3-manifolds obtained by doing Dehn-fillings to some of the boundary components of fundamental shadow link complements. Moreover, by using these ideal triangulations, we verify the 1-loop conjecture proposed by Dimofte and Garoufalidis for every fundamental shadow link complement. By using the result of Kalelkar-Schleimer-Segerman \cite{KSS}, we also prove the topological invariance of the 1-loop invariant and show that the 1-loop invariant satisfies a surgery formula. As a result, we prove the 1-loop conjecture for manifolds obtained by doing sufficiently long Dehn-fillings on boundary components of any fundamental shadow link complement. This verifies the 1-loop conjecture for a large class of hyperbolic 3-manifolds.

Abstract:In this paper, we find a more straightforward problem that is equivalent to one of the major challenges in knot theory: the classification of links in the 3-sphere. More precisely, we provide a simpler braid description for all links in the 3-sphere in terms of generalised T-links. With this, we translate the problem of classifying links in the 3-sphere into a problem of counting the number of generalised T-links that represent the same link. Generalised T-links are a natural generalisation of twisted torus links and Lorenz links, two families of links that have been extensively studied by many people. Moreover, we generalise the bunch algorithm to construct links embedded in universal Lorenz-like templates and provide an upper volume bound that is quadratic in the trip number. We use the upper bound obtained from the generalised bunch algorithm for generalised T-links to establish an upper bound for the sum of the volumes of the hyperbolic pieces of all closed, orientable, connected 3-manifolds.

Symmetry groups of hyperbolic links and their complements

Abstract:We explicitly construct a sequence of hyperbolic links $\{ L_{4n} \}$ where the number of symmetries of each $\mathbb{S}^{3} \setminus L_{4n}$ that are not induced by symmetries of the pair $(\mathbb{S}^{3}, L_{4n})$ grows linearly with n. Specifically, $[Sym(\mathbb{S}^{3} \setminus L_{4n}) : Sym(\mathbb{S}^{3}, L_{4n})] =8n \rightarrow \infty$ as $n \rightarrow \infty$. For this construction, we start with a family of minimally twisted chain links, $\{ C_{4n} \}$, where $Sym(\mathbb{S}^{3}, C_{4n})$ and $Sym(\mathbb{S}^{3} \setminus C_{4n})$ coincide and grow linearly with $n$. We then perform a particular type of homeomorphism on $\mathbb{S}^{3} \setminus C_{4n}$ to produce another link complement $\mathbb{S}^{3} \setminus L_{4n}$ where we can uniformly bound $|Sym(\mathbb{S}^{3}, L_{4n})|$ using a combinatorial condition based on linking number. A more general result highlighting how to control symmetry groups of hyperbolic links is provided, which has potential for further application.

Abstract:We discuss links in thickened surfaces. We define the Khovanov-Lipshitz-Sarkar stable homotopy type and the Steenrod square for the homotopical Khovanov homology of links in thickened surfaces with genus$>1$. A surface means a closed oriented surface unless otherwise stated. Of course, a surface may or may not be the sphere. A thickened surface means a product manifold of a surface and the interval. A link in a thickened surface (respectively, a 3-manifold) means a submanifold of a thickened surface (respectively, a 3-manifold) which is diffeomorphic to a disjoint collection of circles. Our Khovanov-Lipshitz-Sarkar stable homotopy type and our Steenrod square of links in thickened surfaces with genus$>1$ are stronger than the homotopical Khovanov homology of links in thickened surfaces with genus$>1$. It is the first meaningful Khovanov-Lipshitz-Sarkar stable homotopy type of links in 3-manifolds other than the 3-sphere. We point out that our theory has a different feature in the torus case.

Abstract: We give a brief summary of some of our work and our joint work with Stephan Tillmann on solving Thurston's equation and Haken equation on triangulated 3-manifolds in this paper. Several conjectures on the existence of solutions to Thurston's equation and Haken equation are made. Resolutions of these conjecture will lead to a new proof of the Poincar\'e conjecture without using the Ricci flow. We approach these conjectures by a finite dimensional variational principle so that its critical points are related to solutions to Thurston's gluing equation and Haken's normal surface equation. The action functional is the volume. This is a generalization of an earlier program by Casson and Rivin for compact 3-manifolds with torus boundary.

Abstract:Let $F$ be a compact orientable surface with nonempty boundary other than a disk. Let $L$ be a link in $F \times I$ with a connected weakly prime cellular alternating projection to $F$. We provide simple conditions that determine exactly when $(F \times I) \setminus N(L)$ is hyperbolic. We also consider suitable embeddings of $F \times I$ in an ambient manifold $Y$ with boundary and provide conditions on links $L \subset F \times I$ which guarantee tg-hyperbolicity of $Y \setminus N(L)$. These results provide many examples of hyperbolic links in handlebodies and fiber bundles. It also provides many examples of staked links that are hyperbolic.

Abstract:Given a reduced alternating diagram for a link, we obtain conditions that guarantee that the link complement has a complete hyperbolic structure, crossing arcs are the edges of an ideal geodesic triangulation, and every crossing arc is isotopic to a simple geodesic. The latter was conjectured by Sakuma and Weeks in 1995. We provide infinite families of closed braids for which our conditions hold.

Namely, we prove that any non-braid string link [math], where [math] is a compact orientable (not necessarily closed) surface other than [math], can be written in the form [math], where [math] is prime string link defined up to braid equivalence, and the decomposition is unique up to possibly permuting the order of factors in its right-hand side.

Abstract:Torsion polynomials connect the genus of a hyperbolic knot (a topological invariant) with the discrete faithful representation (a geometric invariant). Using a new combinatorial structure of an ideal triangulation of a 3-manifold that involves edges as well as faces, we associate a polynomial to a cusped hyperbolic manifold that conjecturally agrees with the $\BC^2$-torsion polynomial, which conjecturally detects the genus of the knot. The new combinatorics is motivated by super-geometry in dimension 3, and more precisely by super-Ptolemy assignments of ideally triangulated 3-manifolds and their $\mathrm{OSp}_{2|1}(\BC)$-representations. Extended section 4, and added superalgebras with a single odd generator.

Abstract:Standard toric geometry methods used to construct Calabi-Yau varieties may be extended to complete intersections in non-Fano varieties encoded by star triangulating non-convex polytopes. Similarly, mirror symmetry is conjectured to hold in terms of a transpolar duality generalizing the original construction of Batyrev and Borisov. The associated mirror pairs naturally include certain flip-folded, multi-layered multihedral objects, inclusively named VEX multitopes, and a correspondingly generalized transpolar duality. These self-overlaying VEX multitopes, long since known in pre-symplectic geometry, are found to correspond to certain non-algebraic but smooth toric spaces with Chern classes that satisfy the standard Todd-Hirzebruch identities. The computation of diffeomorphism invariants, including characteristic submanifold intersection numbers, corroborates their recent inclusion in the connected web of Calabi-Yau spaces and associated string compactifications: They arise together with the standard (Fano/reflexive polytope) constructions, within deformation families of generalized complete intersections in products of projective spaces.

Abstract:It has been known for several decades that classical alternating links in the 3-sphere have nice hyperbolic geometric properties. Recent work generalises such results to give hyperbolic geometry of links with alternating projections onto any surface in very general 3-manifolds. However, the most general results require an orientable projection surface. In this paper, we extend to alternating links on nonorientable projection surfaces. As an application, we study Klein bottly alternating links in prism manifolds, which are a natural generalisation of Adams' toroidally alternating links in lens spaces.

The Thurston norm of 2-bridge link complements

Abstract:The Thurston norm is a seminorm on the second real homology group of a compact orientable 3-manifold. The unit ball of this norm is a convex polyhedron, whose shape's data (e.g. number of vertices, regularity) measures the complexity of the surfaces sitting in the ambient 3-manifold. Unfortunately, the Thurston norm is generally quite hard to compute, and a long-standing problem is to understand which polyhedra are realised as the unit balls of the Thurston norms of $3$-manifolds. We show that, when $M$ is the complement of a $2$-bridge link $L$ with components $\ell_1$ and $\ell_2$, the Thurston ball of $M$ has at most 8 faces. The proof of this result strongly relies on a description of essential surfaces in $2$-bridge link complements given by Floyd and Hatcher. Then, we exhibit norm-minimizing representatives for the integral classes of $H_2(M,\partial M)$ and use them to compare the complexity of the Thurston ball with the complexities of $L$ and of $M$. As an example, we show that all the vertices of the Thurston ball lie on the bisectors if and only if $M$ fibers over the circle with fiber a surface with boundary equal to a longitude of $\ell_1$ and some meridians of $\ell_2$. Finally, we use $2$-bridge links in satellite constructions to find $2$-component links whose complements in $S^3$ have Thurston balls with arbitrarily many vertices.

Abstract:Since the 1980s, it has been known that essential surfaces in alternating link complements can be isotoped to be transverse to the link diagram almost everywhere, with the exception of some well-understood intersections, and described combinatorially as a result. This was called standard position for surfaces and has had numerous applications. However, the original techniques only apply to classical alternating links projected onto the 2-sphere inside the 3-sphere. In this paper, we prove that standard position for surfaces can be extended to a broader class, namely weakly generalized alternating links. Such links include all classical prime non-split alternating links in the 3-sphere, and also many links that are alternating on higher genus surfaces, or lie in manifolds besides the 3-sphere. As an application, we show that all such links are prime, and that under mild restrictions, essential Conway spheres for such links interact with the diagram exactly as in the classical alternating setting.

Abstract:We undertake a systematic study of the infinitesimal geometry of the Thurston metric, showing that the topology, convex geometry and metric geometry of the tangent and cotangent spheres based at any marked hyperbolic surface representing a point in Teichmüller space can recover the marking and geometry of this marked surface. We then translate the results concerning the infinitesimal structures to global geometric statements for the Thurston metric, most notably deriving rigidity statements for the Thurston metric analogous to the celebrated Royden theorem.

Abstract:The family of right-angled tiling links consists of links built from regular 4-valent tilings of constant-curvature surfaces that contain one or two types of tiles. The complements of these links admit complete hyperbolic structures and contain two totally geodesic checkerboard surfaces that meet at right angles. In this paper, we give a complete characterization of which right-angled tiling links are arithmetic, and which are pairwise commensurable. The arithmeticity classification exploits symmetry arguments and the combinatorial geometry of Coxeter polyhedra. The commensurability classification relies on identifying the canonical decompositions of the link complements, in addition to number-theoretic data from invariant trace fields.
