Abstract:In this paper we study the theories of the infinite-branching tree and the $r$-regular tree, and show that both of them are pseudofinite. Moreover, we show that they can be realized by infinite ultraproducts of polynomial exact classes of graphs, and so they are also generalised measurable.

Abstract:We establish several new fractal and number theoretical phenomena connected with expansions which are generated by infinite linear iterated function systems. First of all we show that the systems $\Phi$ of cylinders of generalized Lüroth expansions are, generally speaking, not faithful for the Hausdorff dimension calculation. Using Yuval Peres' approach, we prove sufficient conditions for the non-faithfulness of such families of cylinders. On the other hand, rather general sufficient conditions for the faithfulness of such covering systems are also found. As a corollary of our main results, we obtain the non-faithfullness of the family of cylinders generated by the classical Lüroth expansion. Possible infinite entropy of the stochastic vector $Q_\infty$ which determines the metric relations for partitions of the generalized Lüroth expansions, possible non-faithfulness of the family $\Phi(Q_\infty)$ and the absence of general formulae for the calculation of the Hausdorff dimension even for probability measures with independent identically distributed symbols of generalized Lüroth expansions are all facts that do not allow to apply usual probabilistic methods, as well as methods of dynamical systems to study fractal properties of corresponding subsets of non-normal numbers. Despite of the above mentioned difficulties, we develop new approach to the study of subsets of $Q_\infty$-essentially non-normal numbers and prove (without any additional restrictions on the stochastic vector $Q_{\infty}$) that this set is superfractal. This result answers the open problem mentioned in \cite{AKNT2} and completes the metric, dimensional and topological classification of real numbers via the asymptotic behaviour of frequencies their digits in the generalized Lüroth expansion.

On the Computability of Measures of Regular Sets of Infinite Trees

Abstract:The Rabin tree theorem yields an algorithm to solve the satisfiability problem for monadic second-order logic over infinite trees. Here we solve the probabilistic variant of this problem. Namely, we show how to compute the probability that a randomly chosen tree satisfies a given formula. We additionally show that this probability is an algebraic number. This closes a line of research where similar results were shown for formalisms weaker than the full monadic second-order logic.

Abstract:We investigate path-, ray- and branch spaces of trees, certain topological spaces naturally associated with order theoretic trees, and provide topological characterisations for these spaces in terms of the existence of certain kinds of (sub-)bases. Our results yield a solution to a problem due to Diestel from 1992, by establishing the following equivalences for any Hausdorff space $X$: (1) $X$ is homeomorphic to the end space of a graph, (2) $X$ is homeomorphic to the ray space of a special order tree, (3) $X$ admits a nested clopen subbase that is noetherian, hereditarily complete and $\sigma$-disjoint.

A quest for algorithmically random infinite structures

Abstract:The last two decades have witnessed significant advances in the investigation of algorithmic randomness, such as Martin-Löf randomness, of infinite strings. In spite of much work, research on randomness of infinite strings has excluded the investigation of algorithmic randomness for infinite algebraic structures. The main obstacle in introducing algorithmic randomness for infinite structures is that many classes of infinite structures lack measure. More precisely, it is unclear how one would define a meaningful measure through which it would be possible to introduce algorithmic randomness for infinite structures. In this paper, we overcome this obstacle by proposing a limited amount of finiteness conditions on various classes of infinite structures. These conditions will enable us to introduce measure and, as a consequence, reason about algorithmic randomness. Our classes include finitely generated universal algebras, connected graphs and tress of bounded degree, and monoids. For all these classes one can introduce algorithmic randomness concepts and prove existence of random structures. In particular, we prove that Martin-Lóf random universal algebras, graphs, trees, and monoids exist. In the case of trees we show a stronger result that Martin-Löf random computably enumerable trees exist.

Abstract:We show that every definable subset of an uncountably categorical pseudofinite structure has pseudofinite cardinality which is polynomial (over the rationals) in the size of any strongly minimal subset, with the degree of the polynomial equal to the Morley rank of the subset. From this fact, we show that classes of finite structures whose ultraproducts all satisfy the same uncountably categorical theory are polynomial $R$-mecs as well as $N$-dimensional asymptotic classes, where $N$ is the Morley rank of the theory.

Upper bounds for measures on distal classes

Abstract:In recent work, Harman and Snowden introduced a notion of measure on a Fraïssé class $\mathfrak{F}$, and showed how such measures lead to interesting tensor categories. Constructing and classifying measures is a difficult problem, and so far only a handful of cases have been worked out. In this paper, we obtain some of the first general results on measures. Our main theorem states that if $\mathfrak{F}$ is distal (in the sense of Simon), and there are some bounds on automorphism groups, then $\mathfrak{F}$ admits only finitely many measures; moreover, we give an effective upper bound on their number. For example, if $\mathfrak{F}$ is the class of ``$s$-dimensional permutations'' (finite sets equipped with $s$ total orders), we show that the number of measures is bounded above by approximately $\exp(\exp(s^2 \log{s}))$.

Undecidability of infinite algebraic extensions of $\mathbb{F}_p(t)$

Abstract:Building on work of J. Robinson and A. Shlapentokh, we develop a general framework to obtain definability and decidability results of large classes of infinite algebraic extensions of $\mathbb{F}_p(t)$. As an application, we show that for every odd rational prime $p$ there exist infinitely many primes $r$ such that the fields $\mathbb{F}_{p^a}\left(t^{r^{-\infty}}\right)$ have undecidable first-order theory in the language of rings without parameters. Our method uses character theory to construct families of non-isotrivial elliptic curves whose Mordell-Weil group is finitely generated and of positive rank in $\mathbb{Z}_r$-towers.

Getting to the Root of the Problem: Sums of Squares for Infinite Trees

Abstract:The inducibility of a graph represents its maximum density as an induced subgraph over all possible sequences of graphs of size growing to infinity. This invariant of graphs has been extensively studied since its introduction in $1975$ by Pippenger and Golumbic. In $2017$, Czabarka, Székely and Wagner extended this notion to leaf-labeled rooted binary trees, which are objects widely studied in the field of phylogenetics. They obtain the first results and bounds for the densities and inducibilities of such trees. Following up on their work, we apply Razborov's flag algebra theory to this setting, introducing the flag algebra of rooted leaf-labeled binary trees. This framework allows us to use polynomial optimization methods, based on semidefinite programming, to efficiently obtain new upper bounds for the inducibility of trees and to improve existing ones. Additionally, we obtain the first outer approximations of profiles of trees, which represent all possible simultaneous densities of a pair of trees. Finally, we are able to prove the non-convexity of some of these profiles.

This characterization establishes the connection between Carleson measures and the boundedness of a suitable Poisson integral between -spaces. Additionally, when the tree has bounded degree, we investigate the relationship between Carleson measures and BMO functions defined on the boundary of the tree.

Abstract:With the algebraic trees, Löhr and Winter (2021) introduced a generalization of the notion of graph-theoretic trees to account for potentially uncountable structures. The tree structure is given by the map which assigns to each triple of points their branch point. No edge length or distance is considered. One can equip a tree with a natural topology and a probability measure on the Borel-$\sigma$-field, defining in this way an algebraic measure tree. The main result of Löhr and Winter is to provide with the sample shape convergence a compact topology on the space of binary algebraic measure trees. This was proved by encoding the latter with triangulations of the circle. In the present paper, we extend this result to a two level setup. Motivated by the study of hierarchical systems with two levels in biology, such as host-parasite populations, we equip algebraic trees with a probability measure on the set of probability measures. To show the compactness of the space of binary algebraic two-level measure trees, we enrich the encoding of these trees by triangulations of the circle, by adding a two-level measure on the circle line. As an application, we define the two-level algebraic Kingman tree, that is the random algebraic two-level measure tree obtained from the nested Kingman coalescent.

Complexities of Theories of Profinite Subgroups of $S_ω$ via Tree Presentations

Abstract:Although $S_\omega$ (the group of all permutations of $\mathbb{N}$) is size continuum, both it and its closed subgroups can be presented as the set of paths through a countable tree. The subgroups of $S_\omega$ that can be presented this way with finite branching trees are exactly the profinite ones. We use these tree presentations to find upper bounds on the complexity of the existential theories of profinite subgroups of $S_\omega$, as well as to prove sharpness for these bounds. These complexity results enable us to distinguish a simple subclass of profinite groups, those with \emph{orbit independence}, for which we find an upper bound on the complexity of the entire first order theory.

Abstract:We construct, for every $d \geq 3$, a $d$-regular acyclic measurably bipartite graphing that admits no measurable perfect matching, resolving a problem of Kechris and Marks. A dense variant of our construction yields a coupling of two standard Borel probability measure spaces whose support contains no deterministic coupling, though the conditional probabilities of the coupling measure are atomless. This refutes a conjecture of Gurel-Gurevich and Peled.

Abstract:We work in the Cantor space $2^\omega$. The results of the paper adhere the following pattern. Let $\mathcal{I}\in \{\mathcal{M}, \mathcal{N}, \mathcal{M}\cap \mathcal{N}, \mathcal{E}\}$ and $T$ be a perfect, uniformly perfect or Silver tree. Then for every $A\in \mathcal{I}$ there exists $T'\subseteq T$ of the same kind as $T$ such that $A+\underbrace{[T']+[T']+\dots +[T']}_{\text{n--times}}\in \mathcal{I}$ for each $n\in\omega$. We also prove weaker statements for splitting trees. For the case $\mathcal{E}$ we also provide a simple characterization of basis of $\mathcal{E}$. We use these results to prove that the algebraic sum of a generalized Luzin set and a generalized Sierpiński set belongs to $u_0$ and $v_0$, provided that $\mathfrak{c}$ is a regular cardinal.

Abstract:We investigate some versions of amoeba for tree-forcings in the generalized Cantor and Baire spaces. This answers [10, Question 3.20] and generalizes a line of research that in the standard case has been studied in [11], [13], and [7]. Moreover, we also answer questions posed in [3] by Friedman, Khomskii, and Kulikov, about the relationships between regularity properties at uncountable cardinals. We show $\Sigma_1^1$-counterexamples to some regularity properties related to trees without club splitting. In particular we prove a strong relationship between the Ramsey and the Baire properties, in slight contrast with the standard case.

Abstract:We present a streamlined exposition of a construction by R. Chen, A. Poulin, R. Tao, and A. Tserunyan, which proves the treeability of equivalence relations generated by any locally-finite Borel graph such that each component is a quasi-tree. More generally, we show that if each component of a locally-finite Borel graph admits a finitely-separating Borel family of cuts, then we may 'canonically' construct a forest of special ultrafilters; moreover, if the cuts are dense towards ends, then this forest is a Borel treeing.

Abstract:We prove that in both the free and the wired uniform spanning forest (FUSF and WUSF) of any unimodular random rooted network (in particular, of any Cayley graph), it is impossible to distinguish the connected components of the forest from each other by invariantly defined graph properties almost surely. This confirms a conjecture of Benjamini, Lyons, Peres and Schramm. We use this to answer positively two additional questions of Benjamini, Lyons, Peres and Schramm under the assumption of unimodularity. We prove that on any unimodular random rooted network, the FUSF is either connected or has infinitely many connected components almost surely, and, if the FUSF and WUSF are distinct, then every component of the FUSF is transient and infinitely-ended almost surely. All of these results are new even for Cayley graphs.

Abstract:End-spaces of infinite graphs naturally generalise the Freudenthal boundary and sit at the interface between graph theory, geometric group theory and topology. Our main result is that every end-space can topologically be represented by a special order tree. Our main proof ingredient is a structure theorem that we introduce, which carves out the order-tree-like structure of any graph in such a way that there is a natural bijection between the ends of the graph and the limit-type down-closed chains of the order-tree.
