Abstract:The analogue of polar coordinates in the Euclidean space, a polar decomposition in a metric space, if well-defined, can be very useful in dealing with integrals with respect to a sufficiently regular measure. In this note we handle the technical details associated with such polar decompositions.

Abstract:There exist two ways of defining regular variation of a time series in a star-shaped metric space: either by the distributions of finite stretches of the series or by viewing the whole series as a single random element in a sequence space. The two definitions are shown to be equivalent. The introduction of a norm-like function, called modulus, yields a polar decomposition similar to the one in Euclidean spaces. The angular component of the time series, called angular or spectral tail process, captures all aspects of extremal dependence. The stationarity of the underlying series induces a transformation formula of the spectral tail process under time shifts.

Abstract:Abstract We introduce polar metrics on a product manifold, which have product and warped product metrics as special cases. We prove a de Rham-type theorem characterizing Riemannian manifolds that can be locally or globally decomposed as a product manifold endowed with a polar metric. For such a product manifold, our main result gives a complete description of all its isometric immersions into a space form whose second fundamental forms are adapted to its product structure in the sense that the tangent spaces to each factor are preserved by all shape operators. This is a far-reaching generalization of a basic decomposition theorem for isometric immersions of Riemannian products due to Moore as well as of its extension by Nölker to isometric immersions of warped products.

On fractional inequalities on metric measure spaces with polar decomposition

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the fractional Hardy inequality on polarisable metric measure spaces. The integral Hardy inequality for $1<p\leq q<\infty$ is playing a key role in the proof. Moreover, we also prove the fractional Hardy-Sobolev type inequality on metric measure spaces. In addition, logarithmic Hardy-Sobolev and fractional Nash type inequalities on metric measure spaces are presented. In addition, we present applications on homogeneous groups and on the Heisenberg group.

Abstract:Let $\Pi$ be a polar space of rank $n$ and let ${\mathcal G}_{k}(\Pi)$, $k\in \{0,\dots,n-1\}$ be the polar Grassmannian formed by $k$-dimensional singular subspaces of $\Pi$. The corresponding Grassmann graph will be denoted by $\Gamma_{k}(\Pi)$. We consider the polar Grassmannian ${\mathcal G}_{n-1}(\Pi)$ formed by maximal singular subspaces of $\Pi$ and show that the image of every isometric embedding of the $n$-dimensional hypercube graph $H_{n}$ in $\Gamma_{n-1}(\Pi)$ is an apartment of ${\mathcal G}_{n-1}(\Pi)$. This follows from a more general result (Theorem 2) concerning isometric embeddings of $H_{m}$, $m\le n$ in $\Gamma_{n-1}(\Pi)$. As an application, we classify all isometric embeddings of $\Gamma_{n-1}(\Pi)$ in $\Gamma_{n'-1}(\Pi')$, where $\Pi'$ is a polar space of rank $n'\ge n$ (Theorem 3).

Abstract:Bipolar metric spaces and related fixed point theorems therein were introduced based on the motivation of measuring the distance between the elements of distinct sets. The question regarding the independence of these results from the analogous results on a fixed point of an induced mapping on a Cartesian product of two sets. We proved that bipolar metric space is metrizable and we presented two different approaches for defining a metric induced by a bipolar metric. Two obtained metric spaces demonstrated the lack of novelty of fixed point theorems for covariant and contravariant contraction.

Abstract:Given a polarized Kähler manifold (X,L). The space ℋ of Kähler metrics in $$ 2_\Pi {c_1}{(L)}$$ is an infinite-dimensional Riemannian symmetric space. As a metric space, it has non-positive curvature. There is associated to ℋ a sequence of finite-dimensional symmetric spaces $$ \mathcal{B}_{k}{({k}\, \epsilon \,\mathbb{N})} $$ of non-compact Type. We prove that ℋ is the limit of $$ \mathcal{B}_{k} $$ as metric spaces in certain sense. As applications, this provides more geometric proofs of certain known geometric properties of the space ℋ.

Abstract:We study the Laplacian on family preserving metric graphs. These are graphs that have a certain symmetry that, as we show, allows for a decomposition into a direct sum of one-dimensional operators whose properties are explicitly related to the structure of the graph. Such decompositions have been extremely useful in the study of Schrödinger operators on metric trees. We show that the tree structure is not essential, and moreover, obtain a direct and simple correspondence between such decompositions in the discrete and continuum case.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a natural implementation of singular value decomposition (SVD) and polar decomposition of an arbitrary multivector in nondegenerate real and complexified Clifford geometric algebras of arbitrary dimension and signature. The new theorems involve only operations in geometric algebras and do not involve matrix operations. We naturally define these and other related structures such as Hermitian conjugation, Euclidean space, and Lie groups in geometric algebras. The results can be used in various applications of geometric algebras in computer science, engineering, and physics.

Abstract:Polar spaces over finite fields are fundamental in combinatorial geometry. The concept of polar space was firstly introduced by F. Veldkamp who gave a system of 10 axioms in the spirit of Universal Algebra. Later the axioms were simplified by J. Tits, who introduced the concept of subspaces. Later on, from the point of view of incidence geometry, axioms of polar spaces were also given by F. Buekenhout and E. Shult in 1974. The reader can find the three systems of axioms of polar spaces in Appendix A. Examples of polar spaces are the so called Finite classical polar spaces, i.e. incidence structures arising from quadrics, symplectic forms and Hermitian forms, which are in correspondance with reflexive sesquilinear <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://forms.It" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> is still an open problem to show whether or not classical polar spaces are the only example of finite polar spaces. Nowadays, some research problems related to finite classical polar space are: existence of spreads and ovoids; existence of regular systems and $m$-ovoids; upper or lower bounds on partial spreads and partial ovoids. Moreover, polar spaces are in relation with combinatorial objects as regular graphs, block designs and association schemes. In this Ph.D. Thesis we investigate the geometry of finite classical polar spaces, giving contributions to the above problems. The thesis is organized as follows. Part I is more focused on the geometric aspects of polar spaces, while in Part II some combinatorial objects are introduced such as regular graphs, association schemes and combinatorial designs. Finally Appendix B, C and D are dedicated to give more details on, respectively, maximal curves, linear codes and combinatorial designs, giving useful results and definitions.

Abstract:We prove that a polar foliation of codimension at least three in an irreducible compact symmetric space is hyperpolar, unless the symmetric space has rank one. For reducible symmetric spaces of compact type, we derive decomposition results for polar foliations.

In this paper, assuming $\cal P$ is an orthogonal polar space, we prove that the elliptic and parabolic gaps can be described as intrinsic invariants of $\cal P$ without making recourse to the embedding.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometry of projective varieties polarised by ample and more generally nef and big Weil divisors. First we study birational boundedness of linear systems. We show that if $X$ is a projective variety of dimension $d$ with $\epsilon $ -lc singularities for $\epsilon >0$ , and if $N$ is a nef and big Weil divisor on $X$ such that $N-K_{X}$ is pseudo-effective, then the linear system $|mN|$ defines a birational map for some natural number $m$ depending only on $d,\epsilon $ . This is key to proving various other results. For example, it implies that if $N$ is a big Weil divisor (not necessarily nef) on a klt Calabi-Yau variety of dimension $d$ , then the linear system $|mN|$ defines a birational map for some natural number $m$ depending only on $d$ . It also gives new proofs of some known results, for example, if $X$ is an $\epsilon $ -lc Fano variety of dimension $d$ then taking $N=-K_{X}$ we recover birationality of $|-mK_{X}|$ for bounded $m$ . We prove similar birational boundedness results for nef and big Weil divisors $N$ on projective klt varieties $X$ when both $K_{X}$ and $N-K_{X}$ are pseudo-effective (here $X$ is not assumed $\epsilon $ -lc). Using the above, we show boundedness of polarised varieties under some natural conditions. We extend these to boundedness of semi-log canonical Calabi-Yau pairs polarised by effective ample Weil divisors not containing lc centres. We will briefly discuss applications to existence of projective coarse moduli spaces of such polarised Calabi-Yau pairs.

Abstract:Denote by the family of all closed convex sets A ⊂ R n containing the origin 0 ∈ R n . For , its polar set is denoted by A °. In this paper, we investigate the topological nature of the polar mapping A → A ° on , where d AW denotes the Attouch–Wets metric. We prove that is homeomorphic to the Hilbert cube and the polar mapping is topologically conjugate with the standard based-free involution σ : Q → Q , defined by σ ( x ) = − x for all x ∈ Q . We also prove that among the inclusion-reversing involutions on (also called dualities), those and only those with a unique fixed point are topologically conjugate with the polar mapping, and they can be characterized as all the maps of the form f ( A ) = T ( A °), with T a positive-definite linear isomorphism of R n .

Abstract:In this article, we consider a class of functions on $\mathbb{R}^d$, called positive homogeneous functions, which interact well with certain continuous one-parameter groups of (generally anisotropic) dilations. Generalizing the Euclidean norm, positive homogeneous functions appear naturally in the study of convolution powers of complex-valued functions on $\mathbb{Z}^d$. As the spherical measure is a Radon measure on the unit sphere which is invariant under the symmetry group of the Euclidean norm, to each positive homogeneous function $P$, we construct a Radon measure $\sigma_P$ on $S=\{\eta \in \mathbb{R}^d:P(\eta)=1\}$ which is invariant under the symmetry group of $P$. With this measure, we prove a generalization of the classical polar-coordinate integration formula and deduce a number of corollaries in this setting. We then turn to the study of convolution powers of complex functions on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ and certain oscillatory integrals which arise naturally in that context. Armed with our integration formula and the Van der Corput lemma, we establish sup norm-type estimates for convolution powers; this result is new and partially extends results of [20] and [21].
