Abstract:In 1983, Bouchet proved that every bidirected graph with a nowhere-zero integer-flow has a nowhere-zero 216-flow, and conjectured that 216 could be replaced with 6. This paper shows that for cyclically 5-edge-connected bidirected graphs that number can be replaced with 8.

Abstract:It was conjectured by A. Bouchet that every bidirected graph which admits a nowhere-zero k -flow admits a nowhere-zero 6-flow. He proved that the conjecture is true when 6 is replaced by 216. O. Zyka improved the result with 6 replaced by 30. R. Xu and C. Q. Zhang showed that the conjecture is true for 6-edge-connected graph, which is further improved by A. Raspaud and X. Zhu for 4-edge-connected graphs. The main result of this paper improves Zyka’s theorem by showing the existence of a nowhere-zero 25-flow for all 3-edge-connected graphs.

Abstract:parity subgraph of a graph is a spanning subgraph such that the degrees of all vertices have the same parity in both the subgraph and the original graph. Let G be a cyclically 6-edge-connected cubic graph. Steffen (Intersecting 1-factors and nowhere-zero 5-flows 1306.5645 , 2013 ) proved that G has a nowhere-zero 5-flow if G has two perfect matchings with at most two intersections. In this paper, we show that G has a nowhere-zero 5-flow if G has two parity subgraphs with at most two common edges, which generalizes Steffen’s result.

Abstract:A triangle‐path in a graph G is a sequence of distinct triangles T 1 , T 2 , ... , T m in G such that for any i , j with 1 ≤ i < j ≤ m , ∣ E( T i ) ∩ E( Ti + 1 ) ∣ = 1 and E( T i ) ∩ E( T j ) = ∅ if j > i + 1 . A connected graph G is triangularly connected if for any two nonparallel edges e and e ′ there is a triangle‐path T 1 T 2 ⋯ T m such that e ∈ E( T 1 ) and e ′ ∈ E( T m ) . For ordinary graphs, Fan et al. characterize all triangularly connected graphs that admit nowhere‐zero 3‐flows or 4‐flows. Corollaries of this result include the integer flow of some families of ordinary graphs, such as locally connected graphs due to Lai and some types of products of graphs due to Imrich et al. In this paper, Fan's result for triangularly connected graphs is further extended to signed graphs. We proved that a flow‐admissible triangularly connected signed graph admits a nowhere‐zero 4‐flow if and only if it is not the wheel W 5 associated with a specific signature. Moreover, this result is sharp since there are infinitely many unbalanced triangularly connected signed graphs admitting a nowhere‐zero 4‐flow but no 3‐flow.

Abstract:Let r≥2 be a real number. A complex nowhere‐zero r ‐flow on a graph G is an orientation of G together with an assignment φ:E(G)→C such that, for all e∈E(G) , the Euclidean norm of the complex number φ(e) lies in the interval [1,r−1] and, for every vertex, the incoming flow is equal to the outgoing flow. The complex flow number of a bridgeless graph G , denoted by φC(G) , is the minimum of the real numbers r such that G admits a complex nowhere‐zero r ‐flow. The exact computation of φC seems to be a hard task even for very small and symmetric graphs. In particular, the exact value of φC is known only for families of graphs where a lower bound can be trivially proved. Here, we use geometric and combinatorial arguments to give a nontrivial lower bound for φC(G) in terms of the odd‐girth of a cubic graph G (i.e., the length of a shortest odd cycle) and we show that this lower bound is tight. This result relies on the exact computation of the complex flow number of the wheel graph Wn . In particular, we show that for every odd n , the value of φC(Wn) arises from one of three suitable configurations of points in the complex plane according to the congruence of n modulo 6.

Non-conflicting no-where zero $Z_2\times Z_2$ flows in cubic graphs

Abstract:Let $Z_2\times Z_2=\{0, \alpha, \beta, \alpha+\beta\}$. If $G$ is a bridgeless cubic graph, $F$ is a perfect matching of $G$ and $\overline{F}$ is the complementary 2-factor of $F$, then a no-where zero $Z_2\times Z_2$-flow $\theta$ of $G/\overline{F}$ is called non-conflicting with respect to $\overline{F}$, if $\overline{F}$ contains no edge $e=uv$, such that $u$ is incident to an edge with $\theta$-value $\alpha$ and $v$ is incident to an edge with $\theta$-value $\beta$. In this paper, we demonstrate the usefulness of non-conflicting flows by showing that if a cubic graph $G$ admits such a flow with respect to some perfect matching $F$, then $G$ admits a normal 6-edge-coloring. We use this observation in order to show that claw-free bridgeless cubic graphs, bridgeless cubic graphs possessing a 2-factor having at most two cycles admit a normal 6-edge-coloring. We demonstrate the usefulness of non-conflicting flows further by relating them to a recent conjecture of Thomassen about edge-disjoint perfect matchings in highly connected regular graphs. In the end of the paper, we construct infinitely many 2-edge-connected cubic graphs such that $G/\overline{F}$ does not admit a non-conflicting no-where zero $Z_2\times Z_2$-flow with respect to any perfect matching $F$.

Abstract:In 1981 Seymour proved his famous 6‐flow theorem asserting that every 2‐edge‐connected graph has a nowhere‐zero flow in the group Z2×Z3 (in fact, he offers two proofs of this result). In this note, we give a new short proof of a generalization of this theorem where Z2×Z3 ‐valued functions are found subject to certain boundary constraints.

Abstract:In this paper, the concept of circular r ‐flow in a mono‐directed signed graph (G,σ) is introduced. That is a pair (D,f) , where D is an orientation on G and f:E(G)→(−r,r) satisfies that ∣f(e)∣∈[1,r−1] for each positive edge e and ∣f(e)∣∈[0,r2−1]∪[r2+1,r) for each negative edge e , and the total in‐flow equals the total out‐flow at each vertex. This is the dual notion of circular colorings of signed graphs and is distinct from the concept of circular flows in bi‐directed graphs associated with signed graphs studied in the literature. We first explore the connection between circular 2kk−1 ‐flows and modulo k ‐orientations in signed graphs. Then we focus on the upper bounds for the circular flow indices of signed graphs in terms of the edge‐connectivity, where the circular flow index of a signed graph is the minimum value r such that it admits a circular r ‐flow. We prove that every 3‐edge‐connected signed graph admits a circular 6‐flow and every 4‐edge‐connected signed graph admits a circular 4‐flow. More generally, for k≥2 , we show that every (3k−1) ‐edge‐connected signed graph admits a circular 2kk−1 ‐flow, every 3k ‐edge‐connected signed graph has a circular r ‐flow with r<2kk−1 , and every (3k+1) ‐edge‐connected signed graph admits a circular 4k+22k−1 ‐flow. Moreover, the (6k−2) ‐edge‐connectivity condition is shown to be sufficient for a signed Eulerian graph to admit a circular 4k2k−1 ‐flow, and applying this result to planar graphs, we conclude that every signed bipartite planar graph of negative girth at least 6k−2 admits a homomorphism to the negative even cycles C−2k .

On Fan's conjecture about $4$-flow

Abstract:Let $G$ be a bridgeless graph, $C$ is a circuit of $G$. Fan proposed a conjecture that if $G/C$ admits a nowhere-zero 4-flow, then $G$ admits a 4-flow $(D,f)$ such that $E(G)-E(C)\subseteq$ supp$(f)$ and $|\textrm{supp}(f)\cap E(C)|>\frac{3}{4}|E(C)|$. The purpose of this conjecture is to find shorter circuit cover in bridgeless graphs. Fan showed that the conjecture holds for $|E(C)|\le19.$ Wang, Lu and Zhang showed that the conjecture holds for $|E(C)|\le 27$. In this paper, we prove that the conjecture holds for $|E(C)|\le 35.$

Abstract:Tutte's famous 5-flow conjecture asserts that every bridgeless graph has a nowhere-zero 5-flow. Seymour proved that every such graph has a nowhere-zero 6-flow. Here we give (two versions of) a new proof of Seymour's Theorem. Both are roughly equal to Seymour's in terms of complexity, but they offer an alternative perspective which we hope will be of value.

Abstract:We generalise to signed graphs a classical result of Tutte [Canad. J. Math. 8 (1956), 13--28] stating that every integer flow can be expressed as a sum of characteristic flows of circuits. In our generalisation, the rôle of circuits is taken over by signed circuits of a signed graph which occur in two types -- either balanced circuits or pairs of disjoint unbalanced circuits connected with a path intersecting them only at its ends. As an application of this result we show that a signed graph $G$ admitting a nowhere-zero $k$-flow has a covering with signed circuits of total length at most $2(k-1)|E(G)|$.

Sparsity of 3-flow critical graphs

Abstract:A connected graph G is 3-flow-critical if G does not have a nowhere-zero 3-flow, but every proper contraction of G does. We prove that every n-vertex 3-flow-critical graph other than K_2 and K_4 has at least 5n/3 edges. This bound is tight up to lower-order terms, answering a question of Li et al. (2022). It also generalizes the result of Koester (1991) on the maximum average degree of 4-critical planar graphs.

Abstract:Let $\phi_c(G)$ be the circular flow number of a bridgeless graph $G$. In [Edge-colorings and circular flow numbers of regular graphs, J. Graph Theory 79 (2015) 1-7] it was proved that, for every $t \geq 1$, $G$ is a bridgeless $(2t+1)$-regular graph with $\phi_c(G) \in \{2+\frac{1}{t}, 2 + \frac{2}{2t-1}\}$ if and only if $G$ has a perfect matching $M$ such that $G-M$ is bipartite. This implies that $G$ is a class 1 graph. For $t=1$, all graphs with circular flow number bigger than 4 are class 2 graphs. We show for all $t \geq 1$, that $2 + \frac{2}{2t-1} = \inf \{ \phi_c(G)\colon G \text{ is a } (2t+1) \text{-regular class } 2 \text{ graph}\}$. This was conjectured to be true in [Edge-colorings and circular flow numbers of regular graphs, J. Graph Theory 79 (2015) 1-7]. Moreover we prove that $\inf\{ \phi_c(G)\colon G $ is a $ (2t+1)$-regular class $1$ graph with no perfect matching whose removal leaves a bipartite graph$ \} = 2 + \frac{2}{2t-1}$. We further disprove the conjecture that every $(2t+1)$-regular class $1$ graph has circular flow number at most $2+\frac{2}{t}$.

Approximately Packing Dijoins via Nowhere-Zero Flows

Abstract:In a digraph, a dicut is a cut where all the arcs cross in one direction. A dijoin is a subset of arcs that intersects each dicut. Woodall conjectured in 1976 that in every digraph, the minimum size of a dicut is equal to the maximum number of disjoint dijoins. However, prior to our work, it was not even known whether at least $3$ disjoint dijoins exist in a digraph whose minimum dicut size is arbitrarily large. By building connections with nowhere-zero (circular) $k$-flows, we prove that every digraph with minimum dicut size $\tau$ contains $\frac{\tau}{k}$ disjoint dijoins if the underlying undirected graph admits a nowhere-zero (circular) $k$-flow. The existence of nowhere-zero $6$-flows in $2$-edge-connected graphs (Seymour 1981) directly leads to the existence of $\frac{\tau}{6}$ disjoint dijoins in any digraph with minimum dicut size $\tau$, which can be found in polynomial time as well. The existence of nowhere-zero circular $(2+\frac{1}{p})$-flows in $6p$-edge-connected graphs (Lovász et al 2013) directly leads to the existence of $\frac{\tau p}{2p+1}$ disjoint dijoins in any digraph with minimum dicut size $\tau$ whose underlying undirected graph is $6p$-edge-connected.

Max $s,t$-Flow Oracles and Negative Cycle Detection in Planar Digraphs

Abstract:We study the maximum $s,t$-flow oracle problem on planar directed graphs where the goal is to design a data structure answering max $s,t$-flow value (or equivalently, min $s,t$-cut value) queries for arbitrary source-target pairs $(s,t)$. For the case of polynomially bounded integer edge capacities, we describe an exact max $s,t$-flow oracle with truly subquadratic space and preprocessing, and sublinear query time. Moreover, if $(1-\epsilon)$-approximate answers are acceptable, we obtain a static oracle with near-linear preprocessing and $\tilde{O}(n^{3/4})$ query time and a dynamic oracle supporting edge capacity updates and queries in $\tilde{O}(n^{6/7})$ worst-case time. To the best of our knowledge, for directed planar graphs, no (approximate) max $s,t$-flow oracles have been described even in the unweighted case, and only trivial tradeoffs involving either no preprocessing or precomputing all the $n^2$ possible answers have been known. One key technical tool we develop on the way is a sublinear (in the number of edges) algorithm for finding a negative cycle in so-called dense distance graphs. By plugging it in earlier frameworks, we obtain improved bounds for other fundamental problems on planar digraphs. In particular, we show: (1) a deterministic $O(n\log(nC))$ time algorithm for negatively-weighted SSSP in planar digraphs with integer edge weights at least $-C$. This improves upon the previously known bounds in the important case of weights polynomial in $n$, and (2) an improved $O(n\log{n})$ bound on finding a perfect matching in a bipartite planar graph.

A Triangulation of the Flow Polytope of the Zigzag Graph

Abstract:We show that the dual graph of the triangulation of the flow polytope of the zigzag graph adorned with the length-reverse-length framing is a subgraph of a grid graph. Through Mészáros, Morales, and Striker's bijection between simplices of the triangulation, integer flows of a different, supplemental flow polytope, we provide a simple numerical characterization of the adjacency between the triangulation's simplices in terms of their corresponding integer flows. The proofs result from the development of Postnikov and Stanley's sequences of noncrossing bipartite trees as combinatorial objects we call groves. We propose two new statistics derived from this construction that we conjecture recover the $h^*$-polynomial of the flow polytope of the zigzag graph.

Abstract:Converting modulo flows into integer-valued flows is one of the most critical steps in the study of integer flows. Tutte and Jaeger's pioneering work shows the equivalence of modulo flows and integer-valued flows for ordinary graphs. However, such equivalence does not hold any more for signed graphs. This motivates us to study how to convert modulo flows into integer-valued flows for signed graphs. In this paper, we generalize some early results by Xu and Zhang (Discrete Math.~299, 2005), Schubert and Steffen (European J. Combin.~48, 2015), and Zhu (J. Combin. Theory Ser. B~112, 2015), and show that, for signed graphs, every modulo $(2+\frac{1}{p})$-flow with $p \in {\mathbb Z}^+ \cup \{\infty\}$ can be converted/extended into an integer-valued flow.

Group connectivity of 3-edge-connected signed graphs

Abstract:Jaeger, Linial, Payan, and Tarsi introduced the notion of $A$-connectivity for graphs in 1992, and proved a decomposition for cubic graphs from which $A$-connectivity follows for all 3-edge-connected graphs when $|A|\geq 6$. The concept of $A$-connectivity was generalized to signed graphs by Li, Luo, Ma, and Zhang in 2018 and they proved that all 4-edge-connected flow-admissible signed graphs are $A$-connected when $|A|\geq 4$ and $|A|\neq 5$. We prove that all 3-edge-connected flow-admissible signed graphs are $A$-connected when $|A|\geq 6$ and $|A|\neq 7$. Our proof is based on a decomposition that is a signed-graph analogue of the decomposition found by Jaeger et. al, and which may be of independent interest.
