Abstract:We survey several problems concerning Riemannian manifolds with positive curvature of one form or another. We describe the PIC1 notion of positive curvature and argue that it is often the sharp notion of positive curvature to consider. Finally we explain how recent Ricci flow theory is particularly well adapted to solve these problems.

Abstract:We show that an orientable 3-dimensional manifold M admits a complete riemannian metric of bounded geometry and uniformly pos- itive scalar curvature if and only if there exists a finite collection F of spherical space-forms such that M is a (possibly infinite) connected sum where each summand is diffeomorphic to S2xS1 or to some mem- ber of F. This result generalises G. Perelman's classification theorem for compact 3-manifolds of positive scalar curvature. The main tool is a variant of Perelman's surgery construction for Ricci flow.

Abstract:Let $(M,g)$ be a complete, connected, non-compact Riemannian three-manifold with non-negative Ricci curvature satisfying $Ric\geq\varepsilon\,\operatorname{tr}(Ric)\,g$ for some $\varepsilon>0$. In this note, we give a new proof based on inverse mean curvature flow that $(M,g)$ is either flat or has non-Euclidean volume growth. In conjunction with results of J. Lott and of M.-C. Lee and P. Topping, this gives an alternative proof of a conjecture of R. Hamilton recently proven by A. Deruelle, F. Schulze, and M. Simon using Ricci flow.

Positive Ricci curvature on connected sums of fibre bundles

Abstract:We consider the problem of preserving positive Ricci curvature along connected sums. In this context, based on earlier work by Perelman, Burdick introduced the notion of core metrics and showed that the connected sum of manifolds with core metrics admits a Riemannian metric of positive Ricci curvature. He subsequently showed that core metrics exist on compact rank one symmetric spaces, certain sphere bundles and manifolds obtained as boundaries of certain plumbings. In this article, we show that core metrics can be lifted along general fibre bundles, including sphere bundles and projective bundles. Our techniques also apply to spaces that decompose as the union of two disc bundles such as the Wu manifold. As application we show that all classes in the torsion-free oriented bordism ring can be represented by connected manifolds of positive Ricci curvature.

Long-time Ricci flow existence and topological rigidity from manifolds with pinched scale-invariant integral curvature

Abstract:We prove long-time existence of the Ricci flow starting from complete manifolds with bounded curvature and scale-invariant integral curvature sufficiently pinched with respect to the inverse of its Sobolev constant. Moreover, if the curvature is sub-critical $L^p$ integrable, this flow converges locally smoothly to a limiting metric $g(\infty)$ on $M$ with $(M,g(\infty))$ isometric to the standard flat $\mathbb{R}^n$, which implies topological rigidity of $M$. This generalizes work of Chen, who proved analogous results for asymptotically flat manifolds. We also prove a long-time Ricci flow existence (and likewise topological rigidity) result for unbounded curvature initial data, assuming the initial data is a locally smooth limit of bounded curvature manifolds as described above.

Gap Theorem on Riemannian manifolds using Ricci flow

Abstract:In this work, we use the Ricci flow approach to study the gap phenomenon of Riemannian manifolds with non-negative curvature and sub-critical scaling invariant curvature decay. The first main result is a quantitative Ricci flow existence theory without non-collapsing assumption. We use it to show that complete non-compact manifolds with non-negative complex sectional curvature and sufficiently small average curvature decay are necessarily flat. The second main result concerns three-manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature of quadratic decay. By combining our newly established curvature estimate and method in Kähler geometry, we show that if the curvature decays slightly faster even in average sense, the manifold must be flat. This strengthens a result of Reiris. In the compact case, we use the Ricci flow regularization to generalize the celebrated Gromov-Ruh Theorem in this direction.

The goal is to provide a working definition of the Ricci flow as well as some intuition for its behavior without assuming any prerequisite knowledge of differential geometry or topology.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a new notion of curvature on the edges of a graph that is defined in terms of effective resistances. We call this the Ricci--Foster curvature. We study the Ricci flow resulting from this curvature. We prove the existence of solutions to Ricci flow on short time intervals, and prove that Ricci flow preserves graphs with nonnegative (resp. positive) curvature.

Ricci Flows with Nilpotent Symmetry and Zero Bundle Curvature

Abstract:We use Lott's functional and construct a new functional to derive rigidity results for invariant Ricci flow blowdown limits on nilpotent principal bundles with zero associated curvature. Consequently, we prove that the blowdown limit is locally an expanding Ricci soliton when the structure group is the three dimensional Heisenberg group. In addition, we classify this soliton when the base manifold is one dimensional. This, together with Lott's work in the abelian setting, yields a complete local classification of invariant Ricci flow blowdown limits on four dimensional, nilpotent principal bundles.

Abstract:We show that, for any $n\geq 2$, there exists a homogeneous space of dimension $d=8n-4$ with metrics of $\mathrm{Ric}_{\frac{d}{2}-5}>0$ if $n\neq 3$ and $\mathrm{Ric}_6>0$ if $n=3$ which evolve under the Ricci flow to metrics whose Ricci tensor is not $(d-4)$-positive. Consequently, Ricci flow does not preserve a range of curvature conditions that interpolate between positive sectional and positive scalar curvature. This extends a theorem of Böhm and Wilking in the case of $n=2$.

Abstract:This project serves to analyze the behavior of Ricci Flow in five dimensional manifolds. Ricci Flow was introduced by Richard Hamilton in 1982 and was an essential tool in proving the Geometrization and Poincare Conjectures. In general, Ricci Flow is a nonlinear PDE whose solutions are rather difficult to calculate; however, in a homogeneous manifold, the Ricci Flow reduces to an ODE. The behavior of Ricci Flow in two, three, and four dimensional homogenous manifolds has been calculated and is well understood. The work presented here will describe efforts to better understand the behavior of Ricci Flow in a certain class of five dimensional homogeneous manifolds.

Abstract:Ancient solutions of the Ricci flow arise naturally as models for singularity formation. There has been significant progress towards the classification of such solutions under natural geometric assumptions. Nonnegatively curved solutions in dimensions 2 and 3, and uniformly PIC solutions in higher dimensions are now well understood. We consider ancient solutions of arbitrary dimension which are complete and have Type I curvature growth. We show that a simply connected, noncompact, -noncollapsed Type I ancient solution with nonnegative sectional curvature necessarily splits a Euclidean factor. It follows that a -noncollapsed Type I ancient solution which is weakly PIC2 is a locally symmetric space.

Abstract:We construct smooth solutions to Ricci flow starting from a class of singular metrics and give asymptotics for the forward evolution. The singular metrics heal with a set of points (of codimension at least three) coming out of the singular point. We conjecture that these metrics arise as final-time limits of Ricci flow encountering a Type-I singularity modeled on $\mathbb{R}^{p+1} \times S^q$. This gives a picture of Ricci flow through a singularity, in which a neighborhood of the manifold changes topology from $D^{p+1} \times S^{q}$ to $S^p \times D^{q+1}$ (through the cone over $S^p \times S^q$.) We work in the class of doubly-warped product metrics. We also briefly discuss some possible smooth and non-smooth forward evolutions from other singular initial data.
On locally conformally flat manifolds with positive pinched Ricci curvature

Abstract:By using the Yamabe flow, we prove that if $(M^n,g)$, $n\geq3$, is an $n$-dimensional locally conformally flat complete Riemannian manifold $Rc\geq \epsilon Rg>0$, where $\epsilon>0$ is a uniformly constant, then $M^n$ must be compact. Our result shows that Hamilton's pinching conjecture also holds for higher dimensional case if we assume additionally the metric is locally conformally flat.

Existence and applications of Ricci flows via pseudolocality

Abstract:We prove the short-time existence of Ricci flows on complete manifolds with scalar curvature bounded below uniformly, Ricci curvature bounded below by a negative quadratic function, and with almost Euclidean isoperimetric inequality holds locally. In particular, this result applies to manifolds with both Ricci curvature and injectivity radius bounded from below. We also study the short-time behaviour of these solutions which may have unbounded curvature at the initial time, and provide some applications. A key tool is Perelman's pseudolocality theorem.

Abstract:We study the Ricci flow out of spaces with edge type conical singularities along a closed, embedded curve. Under the additional assumption that for each point of the curve, our space is locally modelled on the product of a fixed positively curved cone and a line, we show existence of a solution to Ricci flow $(M,g(t))$ for $t\in (0,T],$ which converges back to the singular space as $t\searrow 0$ in the pointed Gromov-Hausdorff topology. We also prove curvature estimates for the solution and, for edge points, we show that the tangent flow at these points is a positively curved expanding Ricci soliton solution crossed with a line.

Abstract:Lai (2021) used singular Ricci flows, introduced by Kleiner and Lott (2017), to construct a nonnegative Ricci curvature Ricci flow $g(t)$ emerging from an arbitrary 3D complete noncompact Riemannian manifold $(M^3, g_0)$ which has nonnegative Ricci curvature. We show $g(t)$ is complete for positive times provided $g_0$ satisfies a volume ratio lower bound that approaches zero at spatial infinity. Our proof combines a pseudolocality result of Lai (2021) for singular flows, together with a pseudolocality result of Hochard (2016) and Simon and Topping (2022) for nonsingular flows. We also show that the construction of complete nonnegative complex sectional curvature flows by Cabezas-Rivas and Wilking (2015) can be adapted here to show $g(t)$ is complete for positive times provided $g_0$ is a compactly supported perturbation of a nonnegative sectional curvature metric on $\mathbb{R}^3$.

Abstract: In our previous paper math.DG/0010008, we develop some new techniques in attacking the convergence problems for the K\"ahler Ricci flow. The one of main ideas is to find a set of new functionals on curvature tensors such that the Ricci flow is the gradient like flow of these functionals. We successfully find such functionals in case of Kaehler manifolds. On K\"ahler-Einstein manifold with positive scalar curvature, if the initial metric has positive bisectional curvature, we prove that these functionals have a uniform lower bound, via the effective use of Tian's inequality. Consequently, we prove the following theorem: Let $M$ be a K\"ahler-Einstein manifold with positive scalar curvature. If the initial metric has nonnegative bisectional curvature and positive at least at one point, then the K\"ahler Ricci flow will converge exponentially fast to a K\"ahler-Einstein metric with constant bisectional curvature. Such a result holds for K\"ahler-Einstein orbifolds.
