Abstract:Some years ago Koutras presented a method of constructing a conformal Killing tensor from a pair of orthogonal conformal Killing vectors. When the vector associated with the conformal Killing tensor is a gradient, a Killing tensor (in general irreducible) can then be constructed. In this paper it is shown that the severe restriction of orthogonality is unnecessary and thus it is possible that many more Killing tensors can be constructed in this way. We also extend, and in one case correct, some results on Killing tensors constructed from a single conformal Killing vector. Weir's result that, for flat space, there are 84 independent conformal Killing tensors, all of which are reducible, is extended to conformally flat spacetimes. In conformally flat spacetimes it is thus possible to construct all the conformal Killing tensors and in particular all the Killing tensors (which in general will not be reducible) from conformal Killing vectors.

Abstract:Hano's theorem states that the space of Killing vector fields of a complete simply connected Riemannian manifold is isomorphic to the direct sum of the Killing vector fields of the factors in its de Rham decomposition. We prove a generalisation of this theorem to manifolds with indefinite metrics that requires an assumption on the factors, and show by example why this assumption is needed.

Abstract:Koutras has proposed some methods to construct reducible proper conformal Killing tensors and Killing tensors (which are, in general, irreducible) when a pair of orthogonal conformal Killing vectors exist in a given space. We give the completely general result demonstrating that this severe restriction of orthogonality is unnecessary. In addition, we correct and extend some results concerning Killing tensors constructed from a single conformal Killing vector. A number of examples demonstrate that it is possible to construct a much larger class of reducible proper conformal Killing tensors and Killing tensors than permitted by the Koutras algorithms. In particular, by showing that all conformal Killing tensors are reducible in conformally flat spaces, we have a method of constructing all conformal Killing tensors, and hence all the Killing tensors (which will in general be irreducible) of conformally flat spaces using their conformal Killing vectors.

Abstract:We prove that on the product of two Riemannian manifolds one of which is compact, any Killing tensor is reducible, that is, is the sum of products of Killing tensors on the factors. The same is true for the lifts to the universal cover of Killing tensors on a compact manifold with reducible holonomy. We give a local description of Killing tensors on product manifolds and present an example of a complete product manifold whose factors are locally irreducible which admits an irreducible Killing tensor field.

Abstract:We show that a Killing field on a compact pseudo-Kähler ddbar manifold is necessarily (real) holomorphic. Our argument works without the ddbar assumption in real dimension four. The claim about holomorphicity of Killing fields on compact pseudo-Kähler manifolds appears in a 2012 paper by Yamada, and in an appendix we provide a detailed explanation of why we believe that Yamada's argument is incomplete.

Abstract:A new method is presented for finding Killing tensors in spacetimes with symmetries. The method is used to find all the Killing tensors of Melvin's magnetic universe and the Schwarzschild vacuum. We show that they are all trivial. The method requires less computation than solving the full Killing tensor equations directly, and it can be used even when the spacetime is not algebraically special.

Abstract:We study Killing tensors in the context of warped products and apply the results to the problem of orthogonal separation of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. This work is motivated primarily by the case of spaces of constant curvature where warped products are abundant. We first characterize Killing tensors which have a natural algebraic decomposition in warped products. We then apply this result to show how one can obtain the Killing-Stackel space (KS-space) for separable coordinate systems decomposable in warped products. This result in combination with Benenti's theory for constructing the KS-space of certain special separable coordinates can be used to obtain the KS-space for all orthogonal separable coordinates found by Kalnins and Miller in Riemannian spaces of constant curvature. Next we characterize when a natural Hamiltonian is separable in coordinates decomposable in a warped product by showing that the conditions originally given by Benenti can be reduced. Finally we use this characterization and concircular tensors (a special type of torsionless conformal Killing tensor) to develop a general algorithm to determine when a natural Hamiltonian is separable in a special class of separable coordinates which include all orthogonal separable coordinates in spaces of constant curvature.

Abstract:We study the conformal classes of 2-dimensional Lorentzian tori with (non zero) Killing fields. We define a map that associate to such a class a vector field on the circle (up to a scalar factor). This map is not injective but has finite dimensional fiber. It allows us to characterize the conformal classes of tori with Killing field satisfying a condition related to the existence of conjugate points given by L. Mehidi.

Abstract:Methods are presented for finding Killing-Yano tensors, conformal Killing-Yano tensors, and conformal Killing vectors in spacetimes with a hypersurface orthogonal Killing vector. These methods are similar to a method developed by the authors for finding Killing tensors. In all cases one decomposes both the tensor and the equation it satisfies into pieces along the Killing vector and pieces orthogonal to the Killing vector. Solving the separate equations that result from this decomposition requires less computing than integrating the original equation. In each case, examples are given to illustrate the method.

Abstract:We address the problem of how to characterise when a rank-two conformal Killing tensor is the trace-free part of a Killing tensor for a metric in the conformal class. We call such a metric a Killing scale. Our approach is via differential prolongation using conformally invariant tractor calculus. First, we show that there is a useful partial prolongation of the conformal Killing equation to a simplified equation for sections of some tractor bundle. We then use this partial prolongation to provide such an invariant characterisation in terms of the scale tractor and this partial prolongation. This captures invariantly the relevant Bertrand--Darboux equation. We show that Einstein Killing scales have a special place in the theory. On conformally flat manifolds, we give the full prolongation of the conformally Killing equation to a conformally invariant connection on a tractor bundle. Using this, we provide a characterisation of (non-scalar flat) Einstein Killing scales by an algebraic equation for the scale tractors corresponding to such metrics. This also provides an algebraic description of the linear subspace of conformal Killing tensors that are compatible with a given Einstein Killing scale. For completeness and to introduce the main ideas, we also study analogous questions for conformal Killing vectors.

Abstract:Near horizon geometries with multiply degenerate Killing horizons are considered, and their degenerate Killing vector fields identified. We prove that they all arise from hypersurface-orthogonal Killing vectors of any cut of with the inherited metric—cuts are spacelike co-dimension two submanifolds contained in . For each of these Killing vectors on a given cut, there are three different possibilities for the near horizon metric which are presented explicitly. The structure of the metric for near horizon geometries with multiple Killing horizons of order is thereby completely determined, and in particular we prove that the cuts on must be warped products with maximally symmetric fibers (ergo of constant curvature). The question whether multiple degenerate Killing horizons may lead to inequivalent near horizon geometries by using different degenerate Killings is addressed, and answered on the negative: all near horizon geometries built from a given multiple degenerate Killing horizon (using different degenerate Killings) are locally isometric.

Vector-tensor theories in metric-affine geometry

Abstract:We investigate ghost-free vector-tensor theories in metric-affine geometry. In all of our analysis, we start with the Lagrangian containing up to quadratic terms of first-order derivatives of a vector field. To obtain ghost-free vector-tensor theories efficiently, we consider two options; the theories satisfy the torsionless condition or have the projective symmetry. We first explore the vector-tensor theories under the former condition. We then investigate the projective-invariant vector-tensor theories in metric-affine geometry. To systematically construct a projective-invariant Lagrangian, we use two different approaches. First, we construct a Lagrangian by contracting the epsilon tensor. Second, we construct a Lagrangian by use of projective-invariant combinations. We find that to obtain a ghost-free Lagrangian in metric-affine geometry, imposing the projective invariance would be more useful than imposing the torsionless condition. However, we also prove that the projective invariance (or the torsionless condition) alone is insufficient for vector-tensor theories in metric-affine geometry to be ghost-free.

Abstract:We investigate higher rank Killing-Yano tensors showing that third rank Killing-Yano tensors are not always trivial objects being possible to construct irreducible Killing tensors from them. We give as an example the Kimura IIC metric were from two rank Killing-Yano tensors we obtain a reducible Killing tensor and from third rank Killing-Yano tensors we obtain three Killing tensors, one reducible and two irreducible.

Abstract:Benefiting from the index spinorial formalism, the Killing spinor equation is integrated in six-dimensional spacetimes. The integrability conditions for the existence of a Killing spinor are worked out and the Killing spinors are classified in two algebraic types, in the first type the scalar curvature of the spacetime must be negative, while in the second type the spacetime must be an Einstein manifold. In addition, the equations that define Killing-Yano (KY) and closed conformal Killing-Yano (CCKY) tensors are expressed in the index notation and, as consequence, all non-vanishing KY and CCKY tensors that can be generated from a Killing spinor are made explicit.

Killing Fields on Compact m-Quasi-Einstein Manifolds

Abstract:We show that given a compact, connected $m$-quasi Einstein manifold $(M,g,X)$ without boundary, the potential vector field $X$ is Killing if and only if $(M, g)$ has constant scalar curvature. This extends a result of Bahuaud-Gunasekaran-Kunduri-Woolgar, where it is shown that $X$ is Killing if $X$ is incompressible. We also provide a sufficient condition for a compact, non-gradient $m$-quasi Einstein metric to admit a Killing field. We do this by following a technique of Dunajski and Lucietti, who prove that a Killing field always exists in this case when $m=2$. This condition provides an alternate proof of the aforementioned result of Bahuaud-Gunasekaran-Kunduri-Woolgar. This alternate proof works in the $m = -2$ case as well, which was not covered in the original proof.

Abstract:In this paper, we extend the study of generalized Killing spinors on Riemannian Spin$^c$ manifolds started by Moroianu and Herzlich to complex Killing functions. We prove that such spinor fields are always real Spin$^c$ Killing spinors or imaginary generalized Spin$^c$ Killing spinors, providing that the dimension of the manifold is greater or equal to 4. Moreover, we classify Riemannian Spin$^c$ manifolds carrying imaginary and imaginary generalized Killing spinors.
