Abstract:A two-fluid Discrete Boltzmann Model (DBM) for compressible flows based on the ellipsoidal statistical Bhatnagar–Gross–Krook is presented. The model has a flexible Prandtl number or specific heat ratio. Mathematically, the model is composed of two coupled Discrete Boltzmann Equations (DBEs). Each DBE describes one component of the fluid. Physically, the model is equivalent to a macroscopic fluid model based on Navier–Stokes (NS) equations and supplemented by a coarse-grained model for thermodynamic non-equilibrium behaviors. To obtain a flexible Prandtl number, a coefficient is introduced in the ellipsoidal statistical distribution function to control the viscosity. To obtain a flexible specific heat ratio, a parameter is introduced in the energy kinetic moments to control the extra degree of freedom. For binary mixture, the correspondence between the macroscopic fluid model and the DBM may be several-to-one. Five typical benchmark tests are used to verify and validate the model. Some interesting non-equilibrium results, which are not available in the NS model or the single-fluid DBM, are presented.

Abstract:The rarefied effect of gas flow in microchannel is significant and cannot be well described by traditional hydrodynamic models. It has been know that discrete Boltzmann model (DBM) has the potential to investigate flows in a relatively wider range of Knudsen number because of its intrinsic kinetic nature inherited from Boltzmann equation. It is crucial to have a proper kinetic boundary condition for DBM to capture the velocity slip and the flow characteristics in the Knudsen layer. In this paper, we present a DBM combined with Maxwell-type boundary condition model for slip flow. The tangential momentum accommodation coefficient is introduced to implement a gas-surface interaction model. Both the velocity slip and the Knudsen layer under various Knudsen numbers and accommodation coefficients can be well described. Two kinds of slip flows, including Couette flow and Poiseuille flow, are simulated to verify the model. To dynamically compare results from different models, the relation between the definition of Knudsen number in hard sphere model and that in BGK model is clarified.

Abstract:We propose a multi-component discrete Boltzmann model (DBM) for premixed, nonpremixed, or partially premixed nonequilibrium reactive flows. This model is suitable for both subsonic and supersonic flows with or without chemical reaction and/or external force. A two-dimensional sixteen-velocity model is constructed for the DBM. In the hydrodynamic limit, the DBM recovers the modified Navier-Stokes equations for reacting species in a force field. Compared to standard lattice Boltzmann models, the DBM presents not only more accurate hydrodynamic quantities, but also detailed nonequilibrium effects that are essential yet long-neglected by traditional fluid dynamics. Apart from nonequilibrium terms (viscous stress and heat flux) in conventional models, specific hydrodynamic and thermodynamic nonequilibrium quantities (high order kinetic moments and their departure from equilibrium) are dynamically obtained from the DBM in a straightforward way. Due to its generality, the developed methodology is applicable to a wide range of phenomena across many energy technologies, emissions reduction, environmental protection, mining accident prevention, chemical and process industry.

Abstract:The non-equilibrium high-speed compressible flows present wealthy applications in engineering and science. With the deepening of Thermodynamic Non-Equilibrium (TNE), higher-order non-conserved kinetic moments of the distribution function are needed to capture the main feature of the flow state and evolution process. Based on the ellipsoidal statistical Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook model, Discrete Boltzmann Models (DBMs) that consider various orders (from the first up to the sixth order) of TNE effects are developed to study flows in various depths of TNE. Specifically, at first, two types of one-dimensional Riemann problems and a Couette flow are used to show the model's capability to capture large flow structures with zero-order and first-order TNE effects, respectively. Then, a shock wave structure given by Direct simulation Monte Carlo is used to verify the model's capability to capture fine structures at the level of the mean free path of gas molecules. Further, we focus on the TNE degree of two colliding fluids. A five-component vector is introduced to roughly characterize the TNE degree. It is found that the TNE strengths obtained from various perspectives are different. These findings demonstrate that the inadequacy of focusing only on the few kinetic moments appearing in Navier-Stokes increases with the degree of discreteness and deviation from thermodynamic equilibrium. Finally, a two-dimensional free jet is simulated to indicate that,to obtain satisfying hydrodynamic quantities, the DBM should include at least up to the third-order TNE effects.

Advances in the kinetics of heat and mass transfer in near-continuous complex flows

Abstract:The study of macro continuous flow has a long history. Simultaneously, the exploration of heat and mass transfer in small systems with a particle number of several hundred or less has gained significant interest in the fields of statistical physics and nonlinear science. However, due to absence of suitable methods, the understanding of mesoscale behavior situated between the aforementioned two scenarios, which challenges the physical function of traditional continuous fluid theory and exceeds the simulation capability of microscopic molecular dynamics method, remains considerably deficient. This greatly restricts the evaluation of effects of mesoscale behavior and impedes the development of corresponding regulation techniques. To access the mesoscale behaviors, there are two ways: from large to small and from small to large. Given the necessity to interface with the prevailing macroscopic continuous modeling currently used in the mechanical engineering community, our study of mesoscale behavior begins from the side closer to the macroscopic continuum, that is from large to small. Focusing on some fundamental challenges encountered in modeling and analysis of near-continuous flows, we review the research progress of discrete Boltzmann method (DBM). The ideas and schemes of DBM in coarse-grained modeling and complex physical field analysis are introduced. The relationships, particularly the differences, between DBM and traditional fluid modeling as well as other kinetic methods are discussed. After verification and validation of the method, some applied researches including the development of various physical functions associated with discrete and non-equilibrium effects are illustrated. Future directions of DBM related studies are indicated.

Abstract:Mesoscopic methods serve as a pivotal link between the macroscopic and microscopic scales,offering a potent solution to the challenge of balancing physical accuracy with computational efficiency.Over the past decade,significant progress has been made in the application of the discrete Boltzmann method (DBM),which is a mesoscopic method based on a fundamental equation of nonequilibrium statistical physics (i.e.,the Boltzmann equations),in the field of nonequilibrium fluid systems.The DBM has gradually become an important tool for describing and predicting the behavior of complex fluid systems.The governing equations comprise a set of straightforward and unified discrete Boltzmann equations,and the choice of their discrete format significantly influences the computational accuracy and stability of numerical simulations.In a bid to bolster the reliability of these simulations,this paper utilizes the finite volume method as a solution for handling the discrete Boltzmann equations.The finite volume method stands out as a widely employed numerical computation technique,known for its robust conservation properties and high level of accuracy.It excels notably in tackling numerical computations associated with high-speed compressible fluids.For the finite volume method,the value of each control volume corresponds to a specific physical quantity,which makes the physical connotation clear and the derivation process intuitive.Moreover,through the adoption of suitable numerical formats,the finite volume method can effectively minimize numerical oscillations and exhibit strong numerical stability,thus ensuring the reliability of computational results.Particularly,the MUSCL format where a flux limiter is introduced to improve the numerical robustness is adopted for the reconstruction in this paper.Ultimately,the DBM utilizing the finite volume method is rigorously validated to assess its proficiency in addressing flow issues characterized by pronounced discontinuities.The numerical experiments encompass scenarios involving shock waves,Lax shock tubes,and acoustic waves.The results demonstrate the method's precise depiction of shock wave evolution,rarefaction waves,acoustic phenomena,and material interfaces.Furthermore,it ensures the conservation of mass,momentum,and energy within the system,as well as accurately measures the hydrodynamic and thermodynamic nonequilibrium effects of the fluid system.Compared with the finite difference method,the finite volume method is also more convenient and flexible in dealing with boundary conditions of different geometries,and can be adapted to a variety of systems with complex boundary conditions.Consequently,the finite volume method further broadens the scope of DBM in practical t=applications.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is twofold: the first aim is to formulate and validate a multi-scale discrete Boltzmann method (DBM) based on density functional kinetic theory for thermal multiphase flow systems, ranging from continuum to transition flow regime; the second aim is to present some new insights into the thermo-hydrodynamic non-equilibrium (THNE) effects in the phase separation process. Methodologically, for bulk flow, DBM includes three main pillars: (i) the determination of the fewest kinetic moment relations, which are required by the description of significant THNE effects beyond the realm of continuum fluid mechanics; (ii) the construction of an appropriate discrete equilibrium distribution function recovering all the desired kinetic moments; (iii) the detection, description, presentation and analysis of THNE based on the moments of the non-equilibrium distribution ( ). The incorporation of appropriate additional higher-order thermodynamic kinetic moments considerably extends the DBM's capability of handling larger values of the liquid–vapour density ratio, curbing spurious currents, and ensuring mass/momentum/energy conservation. Compared with the DBM with only first-order THNE (Gan et al., Soft Matt., vol. 11 (26), 2015, pp. 5336–5345), the model retrieves kinetic moments beyond the third-order super-Burnett level, and is accurate for weak, moderate and strong THNE cases even when the local Knudsen number exceeds . Physically, the ending point of the linear relation between THNE and the concerned physical parameter provides a distinct criterion to identify whether the system is near or far from equilibrium. Besides, the surface tension suppresses the local THNE around the interface, but expands the THNE range and strengthens the THNE intensity away from the interface through interface smoothing and widening.

Abstract:A multi-relaxation-time discrete Boltzmann model (DBM) with split collision is proposed for both subsonic and supersonic compressible reacting flows, where chemical reactions take place among various components. The physical model is based on a unified set of discrete Boltzmann equations that describes the evolution of each chemical species with adjustable acceleration, specific heat ratio, and Prandtl number. On the righ-hand side of discrete Boltzmann equations, the collision, force, and reaction terms denote the change rates of distribution functions due to self- and cross-collisions, external forces, and chemical reactions, respectively. The source terms can be calculated in three ways, among which the matrix inversion method possesses the highest physical accuracy and computational efficiency. Through Chapman-Enskog analysis, it is proved that the DBM is consistent with the reactive Navier-Stokes equations, Fick's law and Stefan-Maxwell diffusion equation in the hydrodynamic limit. Compared with the one-step-relaxation model, the split collision model offers a detailed and precise description of hydrodynamic, thermodynamic, and chemical nonequilibrium effects. Finally, the model is validated by six benchmarks, including multicomponent diffusion, mixture in the force field, Kelvin-Helmholtz instability, flame at constant pressure, opposing chemical reaction, and steady detonation.

Abstract:A Boltzmann model equation (kinetic model) involving the chemical reaction of a multicomponent gaseous mixture is derived based on Groppi's work [“A Bhatnagar–Gross–Krook-type approach for chemically reacting gas mixtures,” Phys. Fluids 16, 4273 (2004)], in which the relaxation parameters of elastic collision frequency for rigid elastic spheres are obtained based on the collision term, and the pivotal collision frequency of the chemical reaction is deduced from the chemical reaction rate that is determined by the direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method. This kinetic model is shown to be conservative, and the H theorem for an endothermic reaction is proven. In the framework of the gas-kinetic unified algorithm, the discrete velocity method, finite volume method, and implicit scheme are applied to solve the proposed kinetic model by introducing a suitable boundary condition at the wall surface. For hypersonic flows around a cylinder, the proposed kinetic model and the corresponding numerical methods are verified for both endothermic and exothermic reactions by comparison of the model's results with results from the DSMC method. The different influences of endothermic and exothermic reactions are also given. Finally, the proposed kinetic model is also used to simulate an exothermic reaction-driven flow in a square cavity.

Abstract:A discrete velocity direction model for the Boltzmann equation is proposed in this paper, which provides an alternative technique to the rarefied gas flows. In this model, the directions of molecular velocities are discrete, which are restricted in eight fixed directions, while the molecular speed rate is still continuous. By this approximation, the Boltzmann equation in the six-dimensional phase space is replaced by eight differential-integral equations in three-dimensional space. Thus, the computational cost is reduced greatly by reduction of three dimensions. The number of discrete velocities is not fixed in the present model because the speed rate can be truncated arbitrarily. This is distinguished from the conventional discrete velocity models (DVM). To test this technique, it was applied to the Couette flow and Poiseuille flow. The computed results agree well with those by the linearized Boltzmann equation and the DSMC method.

Abstract:To study simultaneously the hydrodynamic and thermodynamic behaviors in compressible flow systems with spherical or cylindrical symmetry, we present a theoretical framework for constructing Discrete Boltzmann Model(DBM) with spherical or cylindrical symmetry in spherical or cylindrical coordinates. To this aim, a key technique is to use \emph{local} Cartesian coordinates to describe the particle velocity in the kinetic model. Thus, the geometric effects, like the divergence and convergence, are described as a \textquotedblleft force term\textquotedblright . Even though the hydrodynamic models are one- or two-dimensional, the DBM needs a Discrete Velocity Model(DVM) with 3 dimensions. We use a DVM with 26 velocities to formulate the DBM which recovers the Navier-Stokes equations with spherical or cylindrical symmetry in the hydrodynamic limit. For the system with \emph{global} cylindrical symmetry, we formulated also a DBM based on a DVM with 2 dimensions and 16 velocities. In terms of the nonconserved moments, we define two sets of measures for the deviations of the system from its thermodynamic equilibrium state. The extension of current model to the multiple-relaxation-time version is straightforward.

Boltzmann-type kinetic equations and discrete models

Abstract:The known nonlinear kinetic equations (in particular, the wave kinetic equation and the quantum Nordheim -- Uehling -- Uhlenbeck equations) are considered as a natural generalization of the classical spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation. To this goal we introduce the general Boltzmann - type kinetic equation that depends on a function of four real variables $ F(x, y; v, w) $. The function $ F $ is assumed to satisfy certain commutation relations. The general properties of this equation are studied. It is shown that the above mentioned kinetic equations correspond to different forms of the function (polynomial) $ F $. Then the problem of discretization of the general Boltzmann - type kinetic equation is considered on the basis of ideas which are similar to those used for construction of discrete models of the Boltzmann equation. The main attention is paid to discrete models of the wave kinetic equation. It is shown that such models have a monotone functional similar to Boltzmann $ H $-function. The existence and uniqueness theorem for global in time solution of the Cauchy problem for these models is proved. Moreover it is proved that the solution converges to the equilibrium solution when time goes to infinity. The properties of the equilibrium solution and the connection with solutions of the wave kinetic equation are discussed. The problem of approximation of the Boltzmann-type equation by its discrete models and the problem of construction of normal discrete models are also discussed. The paper contains a concise introduction to the Boltzmann equation and its main properties. In principle, it allows to read the paper without any preliminary knowledge in kinetic theory.

Abstract:A discrete Boltzmann model (DBM) is proposed to probe the Rayleigh-Taylor instability (RTI) in two-component compressible flows. Each species has a flexible specific heat ratio and is described by one discrete Boltzmann equation (DBE). Independent discrete velocities are adopted for the two DBEs. The collision and force terms in the DBE account for the molecular collision and external force, respectively. Two types of force terms are exploited. In addition to recovering the modified Navier-Stokes equations in the hydrodynamic limit, the DBM has the capability of capturing detailed nonequilibrium effects. Furthermore, we use the DBM to investigate the dynamic process of the RTI. The invariants of tensors for nonequilibrium effects are presented and studied. For low Reynolds numbers, both global nonequilibrium manifestations and the growth rate of the entropy of mixing show three stages (i.e., the reducing, increasing, and then decreasing trends) in the evolution of the RTI. On the other hand, the early reducing tendency is suppressed and even eliminated for high Reynolds numbers. Relevant physical mechanisms are analyzed and discussed.
APPLICATIONS OF DISCRETE VELOCITY DIRECTION MODEL IN MICRO GAS FLOWS

Abstract:The discrete velocity direction model is a new method to reduce the Boltzmann equation. This model reduces the computational cost of Boltzmann equation greatly by reducing three dimensions.In the model,the directions of molecules are discrete,while the molecular speed is still continuous.By this approximation,the molecular velocity distribution function in the six-dimensional phase space can be replaced by a set of speed distribution functions in the three-dimensional space. By reducing three momentum dimensions,the computational cost of Boltzmann equation can be reduced by several orders of magnitude.In this paper,the DVD model is investigated by numerical method.These results show that the DVD model is accurate in a wide range of Knudsen number. Comparing with the results by the Linearized Boltzmann equation,the largest error is less than 6%. In the continuum regime,the error is even less than 1%.

Abstract:The lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), a mesoscopic method between the molecular dynamics method and the conventional numerical methods, has been developed into a very efficient numerical alternative in the past two decades. Unlike conventional numerical methods, the kinetic theory based LBM simulates fluid flows by tracking the evolution of the particle distribution function, and then accumulates the distribution to obtain macroscopic averaged properties. In this article we review some work on LBM applications in engineering thermophysics: (1) brief introduction to the development of the LBM; (2) fundamental theory of LBM including the Boltzmann equation, Maxwell distribution function, Boltzmann-BGK equation, and the lattice Boltzmann-BGK equation; (3) lattice Boltzmann models for compressible flows and non-equilibrium gas flows, bounce back-specular-reflection boundary scheme for microscale gaseous flows, the mass modified outlet boundary scheme for fully developed flows, and an implicit-explicit finite-difference-based LBM; and (4) applications of the LBM to oscillating flow, compressible flow, porous media flow, non-equilibrium flow, and gas resonant oscillating flow.

Abstract:In this paper, a discrete Boltzmann method (DBM) for plasma kinetics is proposed and further used to investigate the non-equilibrium characteristics in Orszag–Tang (OT) vortex and Richtmyer–Meshkov instability (RMI) problems. The construction of DBM mainly considers two aspects. The first is to build a physical model with sufficient capability to capture underlying physics. The second is to devise schemes for extracting more valuable information from massive data. For the first aspect, the generated model is equivalent to a magnetohydrodynamic model, and a coarse-grained model for extracting the most relevant thermodynamic non-equilibrium (TNE) behaviors including the entropy production rate. For the second aspect, the DBM uses non-conserved kinetic moments of (f−feq) to describe the non-equilibrium states and behaviors of complex systems. It is found that (i) for OT vortex, the entropy production rate and compression difficulty first increase and then decrease with time. (ii) For RMI with interface inversion and re-shock process, the influence of magnetic field on TNE effects shows stages: before the interface inversion, the TNE strength is enhanced by delaying the interface inversion; while after the interface inversion, the TNE strength is significantly reduced. Both the global average TNE strength and entropy production rate contributed by non-organized energy flux can be used as physical criteria to identify whether or not the magnetic field is sufficient to prevent the interface inversion. In general, this paper proposes a generalized physical modeling and analysis scheme that has the potential for investigating the kinetic physics in plasma.

Abstract:The homotopy analysis method (HAM), as a new mathematical tool, has been employed to solve many nonlinear problems. As a fundamental equation in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics, the Boltzmann integro-differential equation (BE) describing the movement of particles is of strong nonlinearity. In this work, HAM is preliminarily applied to dilute granular flow which is relatively simple. By choosing the Maxwell velocity distribution function as the initial solution, the concrete expression of the first-order approximate solution to BE with collision term being the BGK model is given. Furthermore it is consistent with the solution using Chapman-Enskog method but does not rely on little parameters.

Abstract:A discrete Boltzmann model (DBM) for plasma kinetics is proposed. The constructing of DBM mainly considers two aspects. The first is to build a physical model with sufficient physical functions before simulation. The second is to present schemes for extracting more valuable information from massive data after simulation. For the first aspect, the model is equivalent to a magnetohydrodynamic model plus a coarse-grained model for the most relevant TNE behaviors including the entropy production rate. A number of typical benchmark problems including Orszag-Tang (OT) vortex problem are used to verify the physical functions of DBM. For the second aspect, the DBM use non-conserved kinetic moments of (f-feq) to describe non-equilibrium state and behaviours of complex system. The OT vortex problem and the Richtmyer-Meshkov instability (RMI) are practical applications of the second aspect. For RMI with interface inverse and re-shock process, it is found that, in the case without magnetic field, the non-organized momentum flux shows the most pronounced effects near shock front, while the non-organized energy flux shows the most pronounced behaviors near perturbed interface. The influence of magnetic field on TNE effects shows stages: before the interface inverse, the TNE strength is enhanced by reducing the interface inverse speed; while after the interface inverse, the TNE strength is significantly reduced. Both the global average TNE strength and entropy production rate contributed by non-organized energy flux can be used as physical criteria to identify whether or not the magnetic field is sufficient to prevent the interface inverse.
