Abstract:In the conventional Schrödinger's formulation of quantum mechanics the unitary evolution of a state $\psi$ is controlled, in Hilbert space ${\cal L}$, by a Hamiltonian $\mathfrak{h}$ which must be self-adjoint. In the recent, ``quasi-Hermitian'' reformulation of the theory one replaces $\mathfrak{h}$ by its isospectral but non-Hermitian avatar $H = \Omega^{-1}\mathfrak{h}\Omega$ with $\Omega^\dagger\Omega = \Theta \neq I$. Although acting in another, manifestly unphysical Hilbert space ${\cal H}$, the amended Hamiltonian $H \neq H^\dagger$ can be perceived as self-adjoint with respect to the amended inner-product metric $\Theta$. In our paper motivated by a generic technical ``user-unfriendliness'' of the non-Hermiticity of $H$ we introduce and describe a specific new family of Hamiltonians $H$ for which the metrics $\Theta$ become available in closed form.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper discusses a non-Hermitian theory in quantum mechanics called pseudo-Hermitian quantum mechanics. In the traditional Schrödinger theory, the unit evolution of a state is governed by a self-adjoint Hamiltonian operator h in the Hilbert space L. However, in pseudo-Hermitian theory, h is replaced by a spectrum-equivalent but non-Hermitian operator H=Ω^(-1)hΩ, where Ω satisfies Ω^†Ω=Θ≠I, and acts on another non-physical Hilbert space H. Although the Hamiltonian operator H is not self-adjoint in the new space, it is pseudo-self-adjoint under the modified inner product metric Θ, i.e. H^†Θ=ΘH. The paper points out that non-Hermiticity may lead to drawbacks in practical applications, such as difficulty in diagonalization. Inspired by Dyson's work, the author reclassifies the problem by using a non-unitary mapping when dealing with certain specific multi-fermion models. The goal of the paper is to propose a new family of Hamiltonian operators H, for which the metric Θ can be given in closed form, thus simplifying the analysis of non-Hermitian matrices. The authors specifically investigate a class of matrix Hamiltonian operators called "sawtooth" or "transposed sawtooth" H(M), which have closed multiplication properties in finite-dimensional Hilbert spaces and allow for closed-form solutions. This family of Hamiltonian operators enables convenient solutions to time-independent Schrödinger equations and the compatible metric Θ can be explicitly represented as a pentadiagonal matrix. This solves the inconvenience in numerical analysis of non-Hermitian matrix models while maintaining the physical interpretation of probability, i.e. observability of the system. The paper further discusses the generalization of such matrices, introducing a class of solvable non-Hermitian model Hamiltonian operators composed of diagonal and nilpotent terms, which have closed multiplication properties and allow for the construction of closed-form metric matrices under specific conditions. In conclusion, this paper attempts to address how to construct a new and user-friendly class of non-Hermitian Hamiltonian operators in quantum mechanics that are theoretically and computationally tractable, and compatible with the appropriate inner product metric, providing a new approach to handling non-Hermitian dynamics.
