Abstract:In their recent letter, Heeck et al. [Phys. Rev. D 108, L031703] introduced a simple model of leptogenesis, in which the asymmetry originates from the scattering processes only. Here we argue that their calculation violates some of the basic principles of perturbative quantum field theory.

Abstract:We study the evolution of a cosmological baryon asymmetry produced via leptogenesis by means of the full classical Boltzmann equations, without the assumption of kinetic equilibrium and including all quantum statistical factors. Beginning with the full mode equations, we derive the usual equations of motion for the right-handed neutrino number density and integrated lepton asymmetry, and show explicitly the impact of each assumption on these quantities. For the first time, we investigate also the effects of scattering of the right-handed neutrino with the top quark to leading order in the Yukawa couplings by means of the full Boltzmann equations. We find that in our full Boltzmann treatment the final lepton asymmetry can be suppressed by as much as a factor of ∼ 1.5 in the weak wash-out regime (K ≲ 1), compared to the usual integrated approach which assumes kinetic equilibrium and neglects quantum statistics. This suppression is in contrast with the enhancement seen in some previous studies that considered only decay and inverse decay of the right-handed neutrino. However, this suppression quickly decreases as we increase K. In the strong wash-out regime (K ≳ 1), the full Boltzmann treatment and the integrated approach give nearly identical final lepton asymmetries (within 10% of each other at K > 3). Finally, we show that the opposing effects of quantum statistics on decays/inverse decays and the scattering processes tend to reduce the net importance of scattering on leptogenesis in the full treatment compared to the integrated approach.

Abstract:Leptogenesis with heavy neutrino flavours is discussed within a density matrix formalism. We write the density matrix equation, describing the generation of the matter-antimatter asymmetry, for an arbitrary choice of the right-handed (RH) neutrino masses. For hierarchical RH neutrino masses lying in the fully flavoured regimes, this reduces to multiple-stage Boltzmann equations. In this case we recover and extend results previously derived within a quantum state collapse description. We confirm the generic existence of phantom terms. However, taking into account the effect of gauge interactions, we show that they are washed out at the production with a wash-out rate that is halved compared to that one acting on the total asymmetry. In the N_1-dominated scenario they cancel without contributing to the final baryon asymmetry. In other scenarios they do not in general and they have to be taken into account. We also confirm that there is a (orthogonal) component in the asymmetry produced by the heavier RH neutrinos which completely escapes the washout from the lighter RH neutrinos and show that phantom terms additionally contribute to it. The other (parallel) component is washed out with the usual exponential factor, even for weak washout. Finally, as an illustration, we study the two RH neutrino model in the light of the above findings, showing that phantom terms can contribute to the final asymmetry also in this case.

Abstract:In this paper, we have studied the consequences of the μ−τ reflection symmetry for leptogenesis in the type-I seesaw model with diagonal Dirac neutrino mass matrix. We have first obtained the phenomenologically allowed values of the model parameters, which show that there may exist zero or equal entries in the Majorana mass matrix for the right-handed neutrinos, and then studied their predictions for three right-handed neutrino masses, which show that there may exist two nearly degenerate right-handed neutrinos. Then, we have studied the consequences of the model for leptogenesis. Due to the μ−τ reflection symmetry, leptogenesis can only work in the two-flavor regime. Furthermore, leptogenesis cannot work for the particular case of r=1 . Accordingly, for some benchmark values of r≠1 , we have given the constraints of leptogenesis for relevant parameters. Furthermore, we have investigated the possibilities of leptogenesis being induced by the renormalization group evolution effects for two particular scenarios. For the particular case of r=1 , the renormalization group evolution effects will break the orthogonality relations among different columns of MD and consequently induce leptogenesis to work. Abstract: Recently published paper [PRL 114, 147701 (2015)] contains several misleading statements and misinterpretations of known facts. The main massage of the paper [PRL 114, 147701 (2015)] is as follows: "We have shown that explicit symmetry breaking in the structural configuration of charges leads to symmetry breaking of the electric field which results in electromagnetic radiation due to non-conservative current within a localized region of space and time" seems to transcend mere empiricism, touching the theoretical foundations of electromagnetism. Moreover, basic mistakes are numerous in this article and its main claim is wrong. Below we prove it citing the paper and arguing against it.

Abstract:We present a minimal framework that realises successful Dirac Leptogenesis through the Affleck-Dine mechanism. A single right-handed neutrino and a neutrinophillic Higgs doublet are introduced to the Standard Model, which couple via a Yukawa interaction. The inflationary setting is induced by a combination of the two Higgs doublets, with their global symmetry violating interactions leading to a net charge generation via the Affleck-Dine mechanism. This simple Standard Model extension exhibits a unique and connected set of phenomenological implications including the resultant baryon asymmetry, inflationary predictions, cosmological implications, relic right-handed neutrinos, and its low energy phenomenology, while also being able to be embedded in various neutrino mass generating mechanisms.

Abstract:The conventional seesaw-leptogenesis can simultaneously explain the suppression of neutrino masses and the generation of cosmic baryon asymmetry, but usually it cannot predict an unambiguous relation between these two sectors. In this work we shall demonstrate a novel left–right symmetric scenario, motivated to solve the strong CP problem by parity symmetry, where the present baryon asymmetry is well described by three charged lepton masses and a seesaw-suppressed hermitian Dirac neutrino mass matrix. To produce the observed baryon asymmetry, this scenario requires that the neutrinos must have a normal hierarchical mass spectrum and their mixing matrix must contain a sizable Dirac CP phase. Our model can be tested in neutrino oscillation and neutrinoless double beta decay experiments.

Abstract:We investigate how the baryon asymmetry of our universe via leptogenesis can be achieved within the framework of the seesaw model with Fritzsch type lepton mass matrices proposed by Fukugita $et. al$. We study the cases with CP-violating phases in charged lepton Yukawa matrix, however, with and without Dirac neutrino Yukawa phases. We consider both flavor independent and flavor dependent leptogenesis, and demonstrate how they lead to different amounts of lepton asymmetries in detail. In particular, it is shown that flavor dependent leptogenesis in this model can be worked out only when the CP phases in Dirac neutrino Yukawa matrix become zero at the GUT scale. In addition to the CP phases, for successful leptogenesis in the model it is required that the degeneracy of the heavy Majorana neutrino mass spectrum should be broken and we also show that the breakdown of the degeneracy can be radiatively induced.

Abstract:In this paper, we have studied the realizations of the popular first trimaximal neutrino mixing and neutrino μ−τ reflection symmetry (which are well motivated from the neutrino oscillation data and lead to interesting phenomenological consequences) in the most minimal seesaw model with a pseudo-Dirac pair of right-handed neutrinos and their consequences for leptogenesis. In order to realize the low-scale resonant leptogenesis scenario, we have considered two possible ways of generating the tiny mass splitting between the two right-handed neutrinos: one way is to modify their Majorana mass matrix to a form as shown in Eq. (25); the other way is to consider the renormalization-group corrections for their masses. Revisiting Affleck-Dine Leptogenesis with light sleptons

Abstract:We revisit the Affleck-Dine leptogenesis via the $L H_u$ flat direction with a light slepton field. Although the light slepton field is favored in low-energy SUSY phenomenologies, such as the muon $g-2$ anomaly and bino-slepton coannihilation, it may cause a problem in the Affleck-Dine leptogenesis: it may create an unwanted charge-breaking vacuum in the Affleck-Dine field potential so that the Affleck-Dine field is trapped during the course of leptogenesis. We investigate the conditions under which such an unwanted vacuum exists and clarify that both thermal and quantum corrections are important for the (temporal) disappearance of the charge-breaking minimum. We also confirm that if the charge-breaking vacuum disappears due to the thermal or quantum correction, the correct baryon asymmetry can be produced while avoiding the cosmological gravitino problem.

Abstract:We derive and discuss the solution of the Boltzmann equations for leptogenesis in a phenomenologically viable SU(5) x A5 golden ratio flavour model proposed in arXiv:1410.2057 [hep-ph], arXiv:1502.00110 [hep-ph] . The model employs, in particular, the seesaw mechanism of neutrino mass generation. We find that the results on the baryon asymmetry of the Universe, obtained earlier in arXiv:1502.00110 [hep-ph] using approximate analytic expressions for the relevant CP violating asymmetry and efficiency factors, are correct, as was expected, up to 20-30 %. The phenomenological predictions for the low energy neutrino observables, derived using values of the parameters of the model for which we reproduce the observed value of the baryon asymmetry, change little with respect to those presented in arXiv:1502.00110 [hep-ph]. Among the many predictions of the model we find, for instance, that the neutrinoless double beta decay effective Majorana mass m_ee lies between 3.3 meV and 14.3 meV.

Abstract:We explore the connection between low-scale CP-violating Dirac phase~$(\delta)$ and high-scale leptogenesis in a Left-Right Symmetric Model (LRSM) with scalar bidoublet and doublets. The fermion sector of the model is extended with one sterile neutrino~$(S_L)$ per generation to implement a double seesaw mechanism in the neutral fermion mass matrix. The double seesaw is performed via the implementation of type-I seesaw twice. The first seesaw facilitates the generation of Majorana mass term for heavy right-handed (RH) neutrinos~$(N_R)$, and the light neutrino mass becomes linearly dependent on $S_L$ mass in the second. In our framework, we have taken charge conjugation ($C$) as the discrete left-right (LR) symmetry. This choice assists in deriving the Dirac neutrino mass matrix ($M_D$) in terms of the light and heavy RH neutrino masses and light neutrino mixing matrix $U_{PMNS}$ (containing $\delta$). We illustrate the viability of unflavored thermal leptogenesis via the decay of RH neutrinos by using the obtained $M_D$ with the masses of RH neutrinos as input parameters. A complete analysis of the Boltzmann equations describing the asymmetry evolution is performed in the unflavored regime, and it is shown that with or without Majorana phases, the CP-violating Dirac phase is sufficient to produce the required asymmetry in the leptonic sector within this framework for a given choice of input parameters. Finally, we comment on the possibility of constraining our model with the current and near-future oscillation experiments, which are aimed at refining the value of $\delta$.

Leptogenesis in crossing and runaway regimes

Abstract:We study the impact of effective thermal masses and widths on resonant leptogenesis. We identify two distinct possibilities which we refer to as crossing and runaway regimes. In the runaway regime the mass difference grows monotonously with temperature, whereas it initially decreases in the crossing regime, such that the effective masses become equal at some temperature. Following the conventional logic the source of the asymmetry would vanish in the latter case. Using non-equilibrium quantum field theory, we analytically demonstrate that the vanishing of the difference of the effective masses does however neither imply a suppression nor a strong enhancement of the source for the lepton asymmetry. In the vicinity of the crossing point the asymmetry calculated in an (improved) Boltzmann limit develops a spurious peak, which signals the breakdown of the quasiparticle approximation. In the exact result this spurious enhancement is compensated by coherent transitions between the two mass shells. Despite the breakdown of the quasiparticle approximation off-shell contributions remain negligibly small even at the crossing point.

Abstract:The hybrid leptogenesis framework combining the type-I and type-II seesaw mechanisms for neutrino mass necessarily include scattering topologies involving both the scalar triplet and the right-handed neutrino. We demonstrate that a systematic inclusion of these mixed scatterings can significantly alter the evolution of the number densities exhibiting, up to a factor ten, deviation in the predicted asymmetry as demonstrated by our benchmark scenarios. Abstract:We perform a thermal unflavored leptogenesis analysis on minimal left-right symmetric models with discrete left-right symmetry identified as generalized parity or charge conjugation. When left-right symmetry is unbroken in the lepton Yukawa sector, the neutrino Dirac coupling matrix is completely determined by neutrino masses and mixing angles, allowing CP violation needed to generate leptogenesis totally resides in the low-energy sector. With two lepton asymmetry generation ways, both type I and mixed type I$+$II neutrino mass generation mechanisms are considered. After solving the Boltzmann equations numerically, we find that the low-energy CP phases in the lepton mixing matrix can successfully produce the observed baryon asymmetry, and in some cases, the Dirac CP phase can be the only source of CP violation. Finally, we discuss the interplay among low-energy CP phase measurements, leptogenesis, and neutrinoless double beta decay. We show that the viable models for successful leptogenesis can be probed in next-generation neutrinoless double-beta decay experiments.

Abstract:We analyze in detail the effect of varying entropy degrees of freedom on low-scale leptogenesis models. As an archetypal model, we consider the triresonant leptogensis (TRL) scenario introduced recently by the authors, where the neutrino-Yukawa coupling matrix is dictated by an approximate Zn discrete symmetry (with n=3 , 6). TRL models exhibit no preferred direction in the leptonic flavor space and have the remarkable feature that leptogenesis can successfully take place even if all light neutrinos are strictly massless up to one-loop order. Most interestingly, for TRL scenarios with heavy Majorana neutrinos lighter than 100 GeV, temperature varying degrees of freedom associated with the entropy of the plasma have a dramatic impact on the predictions of the baryon asymmetry in the Universe (BAU), and may depend on the freeze-out sphaleron temperature Tsph . We find that this is a generic feature of most freeze-out low-scale leptogenesis models discussed in the literature. In the same context, we consider heavy-neutrino scenarios realizing dynamics related to critical unstable qudits in the thermal plasma and assess their significance in generating the BAU. Second leptogenesis: Unraveling the baryon-lepton asymmetry discrepancy

Abstract:We propose a novel scenario to explain the matter-antimatter asymmetry by twofold leptogenesis, wherein heavy Majorana neutrinos exhibit temperature-dependent masses and engage in $CP$-violating decays. This scenario envisages two distinct phases of leptogenesis: one occurring above the electroweak scale and the other below it. The sphaleron process converts the first lepton asymmetry to baryon asymmetry, but not the second one due to its decoupling. This mechanism potentially explains the significant discrepancy between baryon and lepton asymmetries, as suggested by recent observations of Helium-4. Furthermore, our model implies that the present masses of Majorana neutrinos are lighter than the electroweak scale, offering a tangible avenue for experimental verification in various terrestrial settings.
