Abstract:We report on the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) behavior in fully degenerate 1D Dirac fermions. A ternary van der Waals material Nb$_9$Si$_4$Te$_{18}$ incorporates in-plane NbTe$_2$ chains, which produce a 1D Dirac band crossing Fermi energy. Tunneling conductance of electrons confined within NbTe2 chains is found to be substantially suppressed at Fermi energy, which follows a power law with a universal temperature scaling, hallmarking a TLL state. The obtained Luttinger parameter of ~0.15 indicates strong electron-electron interaction. The TLL behavior is found to be robust against atomic-scale defects, which might be related to the Dirac electron nature. These findings, as combined with the tunability of the compound and the merit of a van der Waals material, offer a robust, tunable, and integrable platform to exploit non-Fermi liquid physics.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the robustness of the Tomonaga - Luttinger liquid (TLL) behavior observed in one - dimensional (1D) Dirac fermion systems and its relationship with atomic - scale defects. Specifically, the researchers hope to understand whether the 1D Dirac fermions in the van der Waals material Nb\(_9\)Si\(_4\)Te\(_{18}\) can exhibit a stable TLL state and whether this state can resist the influence of atomic - scale defects. ### Main research questions: 1. **Verification of TLL behavior**: Verify the TLL behavior of 1D Dirac fermions in Nb\(_9\)Si\(_4\)Te\(_{18}\) through experimental techniques such as scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and angle - resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). 2. **Robustness of TLL behavior**: Explore the resistance of the TLL state to atomic - scale defects, especially whether these defects will affect the stability of the TLL behavior. 3. **Strength of electron - electron interaction**: Quantify the strength of electron - electron interaction in the 1D Dirac fermion system by extracting the Luttinger parameter. 4. **Influence of time - reversal symmetry**: Analyze how time - reversal symmetry affects the scattering characteristics of 1D Dirac fermions, thereby affecting the robustness of the TLL behavior. ### Research methods: - **Experimental techniques**: Use STM and ARPES techniques to characterize the surface topography and electronic band structure of Nb\(_9\)Si\(_4\)Te\(_{18}\). - **Theoretical analysis**: Predict and explain experimental results through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. - **Data fitting**: Use the TLL theoretical model to fit the experimental data to determine the Luttinger parameter and the characteristics of the TLL behavior. ### Main findings: - **Verification of TLL behavior**: TLL behavior has been observed in the 1D Dirac fermion system of Nb\(_9\)Si\(_4\)Te\(_{18}\), manifested as the power - law suppression of the local density of states (LDOS) near the Fermi level. - **Robustness**: The TLL behavior has strong resistance to atomic - scale defects, which may be related to the time - reversal symmetry of Dirac fermions. - **Strong electron - electron interaction**: The extracted Luttinger parameter is approximately 0.15, indicating a strong electron - electron interaction. - **Advantages of the material platform**: As a van der Waals material, Nb\(_9\)Si\(_4\)Te\(_{18}\) has tunability and integrability, providing an ideal platform for studying non - Fermi - liquid physics. In summary, this paper reveals the TLL behavior and its robustness in the 1D Dirac fermion system of Nb\(_9\)Si\(_4\)Te\(_{18}\) through a combination of experimental and theoretical methods, providing an important experimental and theoretical basis for further research on non - Fermi - liquid physics.
