Abstract:We consider the Penrose limit of AdS$_7$ solutions of massive Type IIA supergravity. The resulting pp-wave geometry is supported by RR and NSNS fields. We quantize the Green--Schwarz superstring on the obtained pp-wave background, in the light-cone gauge.

Abstract:Motivated by the recent discussions of the Penrose limit of AdS(5)xS(5), we examine a more general class of supersymmetric pp-wave solutions of the type IIB theory, with a larger number of nonvanishing structures in the self-dual 5-form. One of the pp-wave solutions can be obtained as a Penrose limit of a D3-D3 intersection. In addition to 16 standard supersymmetries these backgrounds always allow for supernumerary supersymmetries. The latter are in one-to-one correspondence with the linearly realized world-sheet supersymmetries of the corresponding exactly solvable type IIB string action. The pp-waves provide new examples where supersymmetries will survive in a T-duality transformation on the x(+) coordinate. The T-dual solutions can be lifted to give supersymmetric deformed M2-branes in D=11. The deformed M2-brane is dual to a three-dimensional field theory whose renormalization group flow runs from the conformal fixed point in the infrared regime to a nonconformal theory as the energy increases. At a certain intermediate energy scale there is a phase transition associated with a naked singularity of the M2-brane. In the ultraviolet limit the theory is related by T duality to an exactly solvable massive type IIB string theory.

Abstract:The non-standard intersection of two 5-branes and a string can give rise to AdS3 × S3 × S3 × S1. We consider the Penrose limit of this geometry and study the supersymmetry of the resulting pp-wave solution. There is a one-parameter family of Penrose limits associated with the orthogonal rotation of the two foliating circles within the two 3-spheres. Supernumerary Killing spinors arise only when the rotation angle is 45°, for which case we obtain the corresponding light-cone string action that has linearly-realized supersymmetry. We also obtain Penrose limits of other non-standard intersections that give rise to the product of AdS3 or AdS2 and 2-spheres. The resulting pp-waves are supported by multiple constant field strengths.

Abstract:We study supersymmetric pp-waves in M-theory, their dimensional reduction to D0-branes or pp-waves in type IIA, and their T-dualisation to solutions in the type IIB theory. The general class of pp-waves that we consider encompass the Penrose limits of AdS_p\times S^q with (p,q)=(4,7), (7,4), (3,3), (3,2), (2,3), (2,2), but includes also many other examples that can again lead to exactly-solvable massive strings, but which do not arise from Penrose limits. All the pp-waves in D=11 have 16 ``standard'' Killing spinors, but in certain cases one finds additional, or ``supernumerary,'' Killing spinors too. These give rise to linearly-realised supersymmetries in the string or matrix models. A focus of our investigation is on the circumstances when the Killing spinors are independent of particular coordinates (x^+ or transverse-space coordinates), since these will survive at the field-theory level in dimensional reduction or T-dualisation.
Penrose Limits, the Colliding Plane Wave Problem and the Classical String Backgrounds

Abstract:We show how the Szekeres form of the line element is naturally adapted to study Penrose limits in classical string backgrounds. Relating the "old" colliding wave problem to the Penrose limiting procedure as employed in string theory we discuss how two orthogonal Penrose limits uniquely determine the underlying target space when certain symmetry is imposed. We construct a conformally deformed background with two distinct, yet exactly solvable in terms of the string theory on R-R backgrounds, Penrose limits. Exploiting further the similarities between the two problems we find that the Penrose limit of the gauged WZW Nappi-Witten universe is itself a gauged WZW plane wave solution of Sfetsos and Tseytlin. Finally, we discuss some issues related to singularity, show the existence of a large class of non-Hausdorff solutions with Killing Cauchy Horizons and indicate a possible resolution of the problem of the definition of quantum vacuum in string theory on these time-dependent backgrounds.

Abstract:Using the supergravity solution of $N_1$ D3-branes probing $A_{N_2-1}$ singularities we study the pp-wave limit of $AdS_5\times S^5/Z_{N_2}$. We show that there are two different pp-wave limits. One is the orbifold of the pp-wave limit of $AdS_5\times S^5$. In this case there is no symmetry enhancement. The other case is the same as the pp-wave limit of $AdS_5\times S^5$ and therefore we again see the maximal supersymmetry. We will also identify operators in the four dimensional ${\cal N}=2$ $SU(N_1)^{N_2}$ gauge theory which correspond to stringy excitations in the orbifolded pp-wave geometry. The existence of the maximal pp-wave geometry indicates that there is a subsector of the corresponding ${\cal N}=2$ gauge theories which has enhanced ${\cal N}=4$ supersymmetry. We also study the pp-wave limits of $AdS_{7,4}\times S^{4,7}/Z_{N}$.
On Supergravity and Noncritical Strings

Abstract:Motivated by the long-term goal of finding holographic descriptions for ${\mathcal N}=1$ and ${\mathcal N}=2$ super QCD, we revisit the subject of ''noncritical'' superstring theory. Focusing on string models with 6d super Poincaré invariance, we provide a careful worldsheet derivation of the leading-order effective theories for the lowest modes. We identify them as $\textit{seven}$-dimensional, $\textit{maximally supersymmetric}$ gauged supergravities: the $SO(4)$ theory for noncritical IIA and the $ISO(4)$ theory for noncritical IIB. The same theories also arise as consistent truncations on $S^3$ of the 10d IIB and IIA supergravities, respectively, where the chirality flip is as expected from T-duality. These effective supergravities should be interpreted in the following sense. The noncritical string can be viewed as a special case of a discrete series of backgrounds labelled by an integer $k$ (which counts the number of NS5 branes in a certain duality frame); the ''noncritical'' value is $k=2$, while for $k \to \infty$ one recovers a weakly-curved 10d target space. The effective supergravities described here give an accurate description of the interactions among the lowest modes for $k \to \infty$, with higher derivative corrections suppressed by powers of $1/k$. We discuss BPS solutions of the 7d gauged supergravities and their uplift to 10d solutions. In particular, we find a novel class of solutions with RR flux, parametrized by a function of three variables that solves an elegant PDE. While we cannot solve the PDE in closed form except in trivial cases, we confirm that our solutions correspond to a 10d IIA Hanany-Witten setup with continuous distributions of both ''color'' D4 branes and ''flavor'' D6 branes.

Abstract:We study the Penrose limit of various AdSp × Sq orbifolds. The limiting spaces are waves with parallel rays and singular wave fronts. In particular, we consider the orbifolds AdS3 × S3/Γ, AdS5 × S5/Γ and AdS4,7 × S7,4/Γ where Γ acts on the sphere and/or the AdS factor. In the pp-wave limit the wave fronts are the orbifolds 2/Γ, 4/Γ and × 4/Γ, respectively. When desingularization is possible, we get asymptotically locally pp-wave backgrounds (ALpp). The Penrose limit of the AdS5 × 5 orientifold as well as the pp-wave limit of D3-branes near singularities in F-theory are also presented. Finally, we give the embedding of D-dimensional pp-waves in flat M2,D space.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the Penrose limit in the case of two gravity duals. One of them, consists of compactified I-branes (intersecting sets of D5-branes over $(1+1)$ dimensions). The second consists of D5-branes compactified on a circle. Both compactifications preserve SUSY. We find a match of the oscillators and masses of string modes on the resulting pp wave against a spin chain in a $(2+1)-$dimensional field theory in the first case, and a spin chain in a $(1+1)-$dimensional field theory in the second.

Half-BPS Janus solutions in AdS$_7$

Abstract:We study half-BPS flows in gauged minimal 7d supergravity featured by an AdS$_3\times S^3$ slicing of the metric, supported by a dyonic three-form field. We first present a novel strategy for analytic integration of the BPS equations, which makes use of the integrals of motion. Subsequently, we discuss the suitable choice of integration constants that gives rise to smooth geometries. These flows are asymptotically locally AdS$_7$ in their UV limit, while their IR geometry is AdS$_3\times \mathbb{R}^4$. We then discuss their uplifts to 11d and massive IIA supergravity and observe that they describe one-parameter deformations of their AdS$_7\times S^4$ and AdS$_7\times S^3$ vacua, respectively, their holographic interpretation being as conformal defect CFT$_2$'s within the corresponding dual SCFT$_6$'s. We conclude with the computation of the holographic central charge, by focussing on the M-theory interpretation.

Superstrings near the conformal boundary of $\rm AdS_3$

Abstract:We study worldsheet sphere amplitudes, in the RNS formalism, in superstring theory on $\text{AdS}_3\times X$ with pure NS-NS flux using the near-boundary approximation. By computing a number of amplitudes at low-lying spectral flow, we deduce a candidate for a dual CFT for generic $X$. Specialising to $X={\rm S^3}\times \mathbb{T}^4$ and with minimal NS-NS flux, i.e., to the tensionless limit, we explore the effect of the interaction term which we ignore in the near-boundary consideration. We show that amplitudes in the tensionless superstring theory on $\rm AdS_3\times S^3\times\mathbb{T}^4$ do not receive perturbative contributions from such an interaction term.

Abstract:We consider solutions of (super) gravities associated to non-critical (super) string theories in arbitrary space-time dimension D=p+3, that describe generically non extremal black p-branes charged under NSNS or RR gauge fields, embedded in some non critical vacuum. In the case of vacuum (uncharged) backgrounds, we solve completely the problem obtaining all the possible solutions, that consist of the (p+1)-dimensional Minkowski space times a linear dilaton times a S^1, and a three parameter family of solutions that include (p+1)-dimensional Minkowski space times the cigar, and its T-dual (p+1)-dimensional Minkowski space times the trumpet. For NSNS charged solutions, we also solve in closed form the problem, obtaining several families of solutions, that include in particular the fundamental non-critical string solution embedded in the cigar vacuum, recently found in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0604202" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0604202">hep-th/0604202</a>, a solution that we interpret as a fundamental non-critical string embedded in the linear dilaton vacuum, and a two-parameter family of regular curvature solutions asymptotic to AdS_{1,2}\times S^1. In the case of RR charged Dp-branes solutions, an ansatz allows us to find a non conformal, constant curvature, asymptotically AdS_{1,p+1} space, T-dual to AdS_{1,p+2}, together with a two-parameter family of solutions that includes the non conformal, AdS black hole like solution associated with the earlier space. The solutions obtained by T-duality are Einstein spaces consisting of a two-parameter family of conformal, constant dilaton solutions, that include, in particular, the AdS black hole of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="hep-th/0403254" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/hep-th/0403254">hep-th/0403254</a>. We speculate about the possible applications of some of them in the framework of the gauge-gravity correspondence.

Abstract:We show that six-dimensional supergravity coupled to tensor and Yang-Millsmultiplets admits not one but two different theories as global limits, one ofwhich was previously thought not to arise as a global limit and the other ofwhich is new. The new theory has the virtue that it admits a globalanti-self-dual string solution obtained as the limit of the curved-space gaugedyonic string, and can, in particular, describe tensionless strings. Wespeculate that this global model can also represent the worldvolume theory ofcoincident branes. We also discuss the Bogomol'nyi bounds of the gauge dyonicstring and show that, contrary to expectations, zero eigenvalues of theBogomol'nyi matrix do not lead to enhanced supersymmetry and that negativetension does not necessarily imply a naked singularity.
On type 0 string theory in solvable RR backgrounds

Abstract:Motivated by a possibility of solving non-supersymmetric type 0 string theory in $AdS_5 \times S^5$ background using integrability, we revisit the construction of type 0 string spectrum in some solvable examples of backgrounds with RR fluxes that are common to type IIB and type 0B theories. The presence of RR fluxes requires the use of a Green-Schwarz description for type 0 string theory. Like in flat space, the spectrum of type 0 theory can be derived from the type II theory spectrum by a $(-1)^F$ orbifolding, i.e. combining the untwisted sector where GS fermions are periodic with the twisted sector where GS fermions are antiperiodic (and projecting out all spacetime fermionic states). This construction of the type 0 spectrum may also be implemented using a Melvin background that allows to continuously interpolate between the type II and type 0 theories. As an illustration, we discuss the type 0B spectrum in the pp-wave background which is the Penrose limit of $AdS_5 \times S^5$ with RR 5-form flux and also in the pp-wave background which is the Penrose limit of $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$ supported by mixed RR and NSNS 3-form fluxes. We show that increasing the strength of the RR flux increases the value of the effective normal ordering constant (which determines the mass of the type 0 tachyon) and thus effectively decreases the momentum-space domain of instability of the ground state. We also comment on the semiclassical sector of states of type 0B theory in $AdS_5 \times S^5$.

On AdS/CFT duality in the twisted sector of string theory on $AdS_5 \times S^5/\mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold background

Abstract:We consider type IIB string theory on an $AdS_5 \times S^5/\mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold background, which should be dual to 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal $SU(N)\times SU(N)$ gauge theory with two bi-fundamental hypermultiplets. The correlator of two chiral BPS operators from the twisted sector of this quiver CFT exhibits non-trivial dependence on the 't Hooft coupling $\lambda$ already in the planar limit. This dependence was recently determined using localisation and the expansion at large $\lambda$ contains a subleading contribution proportional to $\zeta(3) \lambda^{-3/2}$. We address the question of how to reproduce this correction on the string theory side by starting with the $\zeta(3) \alpha'^3$ term in the type IIB string effective action. We find a solution of type IIB supergravity which represents a resolution of the $AdS_5 \times S^5/\mathbb{Z}_2$ orbifold singularity and demonstrate that the relevant light twisted sector states may be identified as additional supergravity 2-form modes "wrapping" a finite 2-cycle in the resolution space. Reproducing the structure of the gauge theory result becomes more transparent in the large R-charge or BMN-like limit in which the resolved background takes a pp-wave form with the transverse space being a product of $\mathbb R^4$ and the Eguchi-Hanson space.

Abstract:We construct the embedding of the λ -model on SL(2, R) × SU(2) × SU(2) in type-II supergravity. In the absence of deformation, the ten-dimensional background corresponds to the near-horizon limit of the NS1-NS5-NS5 brane intersection. We show that when the deformation is turned on, supersymmetry breaks by half, and the solution preserves 8 supercharges. The Penrose limits along two null geodesics of the deformed geometry are also considered. It turns out that none of the associated plane-wave backgrounds exhibit supernumerary supercharges.

Abstract:We consider all 1/2 BPS excitations of $AdS \times S$ configurations in both type IIB string theory and M-theory. In the dual field theories these excitations are described by free fermions. Configurations which are dual to arbitrary droplets of free fermions in phase space correspond to smooth geometries with no horizons. In fact, the ten dimensional geometry contains a special two dimensional plane which can be identified with the phase space of the free fermion system. The topology of the resulting geometries depends only on the topology of the collection of droplets on this plane. These solutions also give a very explicit realization of the geometric transitions between branes and fluxes. We also describe all 1/2 BPS excitations of plane wave geometries. The problem of finding the explicit geometries is reduced to solving a Laplace (or Toda) equation with simple boundary conditions. We present a large class of explicit solutions. In addition, we are led to a rather general class of $AdS_5$ compactifications of M-theory preserving ${\cal N} =2$ superconformal symmetry. We also find smooth geometries that correspond to various vacua of the maximally supersymmetric mass-deformed M2 brane theory. Finally, we present a smooth 1/2 BPS solution of seven dimensional gauged supergravity corresponding to a condensate of one of the charged scalars.
Spin-2 Universal Minimal Solutions on Type IIA and IIB Supergravity

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the spin-2 field perturbations of four families of supergravity solutions. These include AdS$_5$ and AdS$_7$ backgrounds of type IIA as well as AdS$_4$ and AdS$_6$ backgrounds of Type IIB. As the main result, we show that, in all the cases, there is a solution given by a combination of the warp factors. We also find the respective mass spectra. We analyze the normalizability of the solutions and identify the superconformal multiplets dual to them.

Abstract:A class of conformally flat and asymptotically anti-de Sitter geometries involving profiles of scalar fields is studied from the point of view of gauged supergravity. The scalars involved in the solutions parametrize the SL(N,R)/SO(N) submanifold of the full scalar coset of the gauged supergravity, and are described by a symmetric potential with a universal form. These geometries descend via consistent truncation from distributions of D3-branes, M2-branes, or M5-branes in ten or eleven dimensions. We exhibit analogous solutions asymptotic to AdS(6) which descend from the D4-D8-brane system. We obtain the related six-dimensional theory by consistent reduction from massive type IIA supergravity. All our geometries correspond to states in the Coulomb branch of the dual conformal field theories. We analyze linear fluctuations of minimally coupled scalars and find both discrete and continuous spectra, but always bounded below.
