Abstract:We consider the transport properties of non-interacting, gapless one-dimensional quantum systems and of the edge modes of two-dimensional topological insulators, in the presence of time-dependent perturbations. We prove the validity of Kubo formula, in the zero temperature and infinite volume limit, for a class of perturbations that are weak and slowly varying in space and in time, in an Euler-like scaling. The proof relies on the representation of the real time Duhamel series in imaginary time, which allows to prove its convergence uniformly in the scaling parameter and in the size of system, at low temperatures. Furthermore, it allows to exploit a suitable cancellation for the scaling limit of the model, related to the emergent anomalous chiral gauge symmetry of relativistic one-dimensional fermions. The cancellation implies that, as the temperature and the scaling parameter are sent to zero, the linear response is the only contribution to the full response of the system. The explicit form of the leading contribution to the response function is determined by lattice conservation laws. In particular, the method allows to prove the quantization of the edge conductance of $2d$ quantum Hall systems from quantum dynamics.

Abstract:We investigate the current-current correlation functions or the so-called response functions of a two-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasino model at finite temperature and density. We study the linear response by using the functional path integral approach and introducing the conjugated gauge fields as external sources. The response functions can be obtained by expanding the generational functional in powers of the external sources. We derive the response functions parallel to two well-established approximations for the equilibrium thermodynamics: the mean-field theory and a beyond-mean-field theory taking into account the mesonic contributions. The response functions based on the mean-field theory recover the so-called quasiparticle random phase approximation. We calculate the dynamical structure factors for the density responses in various channels within the random phase approximation. We show that the dynamical structure factors in the baryon axial vector and isospin axial vector channels can be used reveal the quark mass gap and the Mott dissociation of mesons, respectively. Noting that the mesonic contributions are not taken into account in the random phase approximation, we also derive the response functions parallel to the beyond-mean-field theory. We show that the mesonic fluctuations naturally give rise to three kinds of famous diagrammatic contributions: the Aslamazov-Lakin contribution, the Self-Energy or Density-of-State contribution, and the Maki-Thompson contribution. Unlike the equilibrium case, in evaluating the fluctuation contributions, we need to treat carefully the linear terms in the external sources and the induced perturbations. These contributions from the mesonic fluctuations are expected to have significant effects on the transport properties of hot and dense matter around the chiral phase transition or crossover.

Response theory for locally gapped systems

Abstract:We introduce a notion of a \emph{local gap} for interacting many-body quantum lattice systems and prove the validity of response theory and Kubo's formula for localized perturbations in such settings. On a high level, our result shows that the usual spectral gap condition, concerning the system as a whole, is not a necessary condition for understanding local properties of the system. More precisely, we say that an equilibrium state $\rho_0$ of a Hamiltonian $H_0$ is locally gapped in $\Lambda^{\mathrm{gap}} \subset \Lambda$, whenever the Liouvillian $- \mathrm{i} \, [H_0, \, \cdot \, ]$ is almost invertible on local observables supported in $\Lambda^{\mathrm{gap}}$ when tested in $\rho_0$. To put this into context, we provide other alternative notions of a local gap and discuss their relations. The validity of response theory is based on the construction of \emph{non-equilibrium almost stationary states} (NEASSs). By controlling locality properties of the NEASS construction, we show that response theory holds to any order, whenever the perturbation $\epsilon V$ acts in a region which is further than $|\log \epsilon|$ away from the non-gapped region $\Lambda \setminus \Lambda^{\mathrm{gap}}$.

Abstract:Response functions are central objects in physics. They provide crucial information about the behavior of physical systems, and they can be directly compared with scattering experiments involving particles such as neutrons or photons. Calculations of such functions starting from the many-body Hamiltonian of a physical system are challenging and extremely valuable. In this paper, we focus on the two-dimensional (2D) ultracold Fermi atomic gas which has been realized experimentally. We present an application of the dynamical BCS theory to obtain response functions for different regimes of interaction strengths in the 2D gas with zero-range attractive interaction. We also discuss auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC) methods for the calculation of imaginary time correlations in these dilute Fermi gas systems. Illustrative results are given and comparisons are made between AFQMC and dynamical BCS theory results to assess the accuracy of the latter.

Abstract:Nonintegrable systems thermalize, leading to the emergence of fluctuating hydrodynamics. Typically, this hydrodynamics is diffusive. We use the effective field theory (EFT) of diffusion to compute higher-point functions of conserved densities. We uncover a simple scaling behavior of correlators at late times, and, focusing on three and four-point functions, derive the asymptotically exact universal scaling functions that characterize nonlinear response in diffusive systems. This allows for precision tests of thermalization beyond linear response in quantum and classical many-body systems. We confirm our predictions in a classical lattice gas.

Long-time divergences in the nonlinear response of gapped one-dimensional many-particle systems

Abstract:We consider one dimensional many-particle systems that exhibit kinematically protected single-particle excitations over their ground states. We show that momentum and time-resolved 4-point functions of operators that create such excitations diverge linearly in particular time differences. This behaviour can be understood by means of a simple semiclassical analysis based on the kinematics and scattering of wave packets of quasiparticles. We verify that our wave packet analysis correctly predicts the long-time limit of the four-point function in the transverse field Ising model through a form factor expansion. We present evidence in favour of the same behaviour in integrable quantum field theories. In addition, we extend our discussion to experimental protocols where two times of the four-point function coincide, e.g. 2D coherent spectroscopy and pump-probe experiments. Finally, focusing on the Ising model, we discuss subleading corrections that grow as the square root of time differences. We show that the subleading corrections can be correctly accounted for by the same semiclassical analysis, but also taking into account wave packet spreading.

Abstract:We study the non-equilibrium response function , namely the variation of the local magnetization on site at time as an effect of a perturbation applied at the earlier time on site , in a class of solvable spin models characterized by the vanishing of the so-called {\it asymmetry}. This class encompasses both systems brought out of equilibrium by the variation of a thermodynamic control parameter, as after a temperature quench, or intrinsically out of equilibrium models with violation of detailed balance. The one-dimensional Ising model and the voter model (on an arbitrary graph) are prototypical examples of these two situations which are used here as guiding examples. Defining the fluctuation-dissipation ratio , where is the spin-spin correlation function and is a parameter regulating the strength of the perturbation (corresponding to the inverse temperature when detailed balance holds), we show that, in the quite general case of a kinetics obeying dynamical scaling, on equal sites this quantity has a universal form , whereas for any couple. The specific case of voter models with long-range interactions is thoroughly discussed.

Abstract:For a general many-electron system, we demonstrate that the Luttinger theorem is obeyed if the electron excitation spectrum is gapless, no matter whether it shows the Landau Fermi liquid or non-Fermi-liquid behavior. Furthermore, we give a general expression of the nonlinear response of the system to external potentials, and apply it for external gauge fields and an on-site time-dependent external potential, where the latter problem can be exactly solved.

Abstract:Studying interacting fermions in one dimension at high energy, we find a hierarchy in the spectral weights of the excitations theoretically, and we observe evidence for second-level excitations experimentally. Diagonalizing a model of fermions (without spin), we show that levels of the hierarchy are separated by powers of R-2/L-2, where R is a length scale related to interactions and L is the system length. The first-level (strongest) excitations form a mode with parabolic dispersion, like that of a renormalized single particle. The second-level excitations produce a singular power-law line shape to the first-level mode and multiple power laws at the spectral edge. We measure momentum-resolved tunneling of electrons (fermions with spin) from or to a wire formed within a GaAs heterostructure, which shows parabolic dispersion of the first-level mode and well-resolved spin-charge separation at low energy with appreciable interaction strength. We find structure resembling the second-level excitations, which dies away quite rapidly at high momentum.

Abstract:The calculation of response functions in correlated electronic systems is one of the most important problems in the condensed matter physics. To obtain a physical response function, preserving both the Ward-Takahashi identity and the fluctuation-dissipation theorem are crucial. Here we propose a self-consistent many body method within the GW framework to calculate the response functions based on the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, which also satisfies the Ward-Takahashi identity. The validity of this methodology is demonstrated on the two-dimensional one-band Hubbard model, where both the Ward-Takahashi identity and fluctuation-dissipation theorem are verified numerically. Moreover, comparing to the accurate spin susceptibility of the determinantal Monte Carlo approach, the results obtained from our method are quite satisfactory and the computational cost are greatly reduced.

Abstract:The last decade has witnessed an impressive progress in the theoretical understanding of transport properties of clean, one-dimensional quantum lattice systems. Many physically relevant models in one dimension are Bethe-ansatz integrable, including the anisotropic spin-1/2 Heisenberg (also called spin-1/2 XXZ chain) and the Fermi-Hubbard model. Nevertheless, practical computations of, for instance, correlation functions and transport coefficients pose hard problems from both the conceptual and technical point of view. Only due to recent progress in the theory of integrable systems on the one hand and due to the development of numerical methods on the other hand has it become possible to compute their finite temperature and nonequilibrium transport properties quantitatively. Most importantly, due to the discovery of a novel class of quasilocal conserved quantities, there is now a qualitative understanding of the origin of ballistic finite-temperature transport, and even diffusive or super-diffusive subleading corrections, in integrable lattice models. We shall review the current understanding of transport in one-dimensional lattice models, in particular, in the paradigmatic example of the spin-1/2 XXZ and Fermi-Hubbard models, and we elaborate on state-of-the-art theoretical methods, including both analytical and computational approaches. Among other novel techniques, we discuss matrix-product-states based simulation methods, dynamical typicality, and, in particular, generalized hydrodynamics. We will discuss the close and fruitful connection between theoretical models and recent experiments, with examples from both the realm of quantum magnets and ultracold quantum gases in optical lattices.

Abstract:We derive equations of motion for higher order density response functions using the theory of thermodynamic Green's functions. We also derive expressions for the higher order generalized dielectric functions and polarization functions. Moreover, we relate higher order response functions and higher order collision integrals within the Martin-Schwinger hierarchy. We expect our results to be highly relevant to the study of a variety of quantum many-body systems such as matter under extreme temperatures, densities, and pressures.

Abstract:Response functions are a fundamental aspect of physics; they represent the link between experimental observations and the underlying quantum many-body state. However, this link is often under-appreciated, as the Lehmann formalism for obtaining response functions in linear response has no direct link to experiment. Within the context of quantum computing, and by using a linear response framework, we restore this link by making the experiment an inextricable part of the quantum simulation. This method can be frequency- and momentum-selective, avoids limitations on operators that can be directly measured, and is ancilla-free. As prototypical examples of response functions, we demonstrate that both bosonic and fermionic Green's functions can be obtained, and apply these ideas to the study of a charge-density-wave material on ibm_auckland. The linear response method provides a robust framework for using quantum computers to study systems in physics and chemistry. It also provides new paradigms for computing response functions on classical computers.

Nonlinear current response of an isolated system of interacting fermions

Abstract:Nonlinear real-time response of interacting particles is studied on the example of a one-dimensional tight-binding model of spinless fermions driven by electric field. Using equations of motion and numerical methods we show that for a non-integrable case at finite temperatures the major effect of nonlinearity can be taken into account within the linear response formalism extended by a renormalization of the kinetic energy due to the Joule heating. On the other hand, integrable systems show on constant driving a different universality with a damped oscillating current whereby the frequency is related but not equal to the Bloch oscillations.

Non-Hermitian Linear Response Theory

Abstract:Linear response theory lies at the heart of quantum many-body physics because it builds up connections between the dynamical response to an external probe and correlation functions at equilibrium. Here we consider the dynamical response of a Hermitian system to a non-Hermitian probe, and we develop a non-Hermitian linear response theory that can also relate this dynamical response to equilibrium properties. As an application of our theory, we consider the real-time dynamics of momentum distribution induced by one-body and two-body dissipations. We find that, for many cases, the dynamics of momentum occupation and the width of momentum distribution obey the same universal function, governed by the single-particle spectral function. We also find that, for critical state with no well-defined quasi-particles, the dynamics are slower than normal state and our theory provides a model independent way to extract the critical exponent. We apply our results to analyze recent experiment on the Bose-Hubbard model and find surprising good agreement between theory and experiment. We also propose to further verify our theory by carrying out a similar experiment on a one-dimensional Luttinger liquid.

Abstract:We introduce a new linear response method to study the lattice dynamics of materials with strong correlations. It is based on a combination of dynamical mean field theory of strongly correlated electrons and the local density functional theory of electronic structure of solids. We apply the method to study the phonon dispersions of a prototype Mott insulator NiO. Our results show overall much better agreement with experiment than the corresponding local density predictions.

General Response Theory of Topologically Stable Fermi Points and Its Implications for Disordered Cases

Abstract:We develop a general response theory of gapless Fermi points with nontrivial topological charges for gauge and nonlinear sigma fields, which asserts that the topological character of the Fermi points is embodied as the terms with discrete coefficients proportional to the corresponding topological charges. Applying the theory to the effective non-linear sigma models for topological Fermi points with disorders in the framework of replica approach, we derive rigorously the Wess-Zumino terms with the topological charges being their levels in the two complex symmetry classes of A and AIII. Intriguingly, two nontrivial examples of quadratic Fermi points with the topological charge ‘2’ are respectively illustrated for the classes A and AIII. We also address a qualitative connection of topological charges of Fermi points in the real symmetry classes to the topological terms in the non-linear sigma models, based on the one-to-one classification correspondence.
