Abstract:We study stationary, periodic solutions to the thermocapillary thin-film model 0,\ x\in \mathbb{R},$?> ∂ t h + ∂ x h 3 ∂ x 3 h − g ∂ x h + M h 2 1 + h 2 ∂ x h = 0 , t > 0 , x ∈ R , which can be derived from the Bénard–Marangoni problem via a lubrication approximation. When the Marangoni number M increases beyond a critical value M ∗ , the constant solution becomes spectrally unstable via a (conserved) long-wave instability and periodic stationary solutions bifurcate. For a fixed period, we find that these solutions lie on a global bifurcation curve of stationary, periodic solutions with a fixed wave number and mass. Furthermore, we show that the stationary periodic solutions on the global bifurcation branch converge to a weak stationary periodic solution which exhibits film rupture. The proofs rely on a Hamiltonian formulation of the stationary problem and the use of analytic global bifurcation theory. Finally, we show the instability of the bifurcating solutions close to the bifurcation point and give a formal derivation of the amplitude equation governing the dynamics close to the onset of instability.

Long-time emergent dynamics of liquid films undergoing thermocapillary instability

Abstract:The study of viscous thin film flow has led to the development of highly nonlinear partial differential equations that model how the evolution of the film height is affected by different forces. We investigate a model of interaction between surface tension and the thermocapillary Marangoni effect, with a particular focus on the long-time limit. In this limit, the model predicts the creation of an infinite cascade of successively smaller satellite droplets near points where the film thickness vanishes. Motivated by recent progress on the analysis of discrete self-similarity in thin film equations, we compute solutions in a space- and time-rescaled coordinate system. Using this rescaled system we observe the dynamics much further in time than has previously been achieved. The observed behaviour is close to, but distinct from, previous observations of discretely self-similar thin film flows, in that the rescaled system does not settle down to a periodic solution, but instead has aspects that continue to evolve monotonically in scaled time. This discovery suggests there are as-yet unexplored ways in which discrete self-similarity may be exhibited.

Abstract:Thin liquid films are ubiquitous in natural phenomena and technological applications. They have been extensively studied via deterministic hydrodynamic equations, but thermal fluctuations often play a crucial role that needs to be understood. An example of this is dewetting, which involves the rupture of a thin liquid film and the formation of droplets. Such a process is thermally activated and requires fluctuations to be taken into account self-consistently. In this work we present an analytical and numerical study of a stochastic thin-film equation derived from first principles. Following a brief review of the derivation, we scrutinise the behaviour of the equation in the limit of perfectly correlated noise along the wall-normal direction. The stochastic thin-film equation is also simulated by adopting a numerical scheme based on a spectral collocation method. The scheme allows us to explore the fluctuating dynamics of the thin film and the behaviour of its free energy in the vicinity of rupture. Finally, we also study the effect of the noise intensity on the rupture time, which is in agreement with previous works.

Abstract:Rupture is a nonlinear instability resulting in a finite-time singularity as a fluid layer approaches zero thickness at a point. We study the dynamics of rupture in a generalized mathematical model of thin films of viscous fluids with evaporative effects. The governing lubrication model is a fourth-order nonlinear parabolic partial differential equation with a non-conservative loss term due to evaporation. Several different types of finite-time singularities are observed due to balances between evaporation and surface tension or intermolecular forces. Non-self-similar behavior and two classes of self-similar rupture solutions are analyzed and validated against high resolution PDE simulations.

Life and Death of a Thin Liquid Film

Abstract:Thin films, bubbles and membranes are central to numerous natural and engineering processes, i.e., in thin-film solar cells, coatings, biosensors, electrowetting displays, foams, and emulsions. Yet, the characterization and an adequate understanding of their rupture is limited by the scarcity of atomic detail. We present here the complete life-cycle of freely suspended films using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations of a simple atomic fluid free of surfactants and surface impurities, thus isolating the fundamental rupture mechanisms. Counter to the conventional notion that rupture occurs randomly, we discovered a short-term 'memory' by rewinding in time from a rupture event, extracting deterministic behaviors from apparent stochasticity. A comprehensive investigation of the key rupture-stages including both unrestrained and frustrated propagation is made - characterization of the latter leads to a first-order correction to the classical film-retraction theory. Furthermore, the highly resolved time window reveals that the different modes of the morphological development, typically characterized as heterogeneous nucleation and spinodal decomposition, continuously evolve seamlessly with time from one into the other.

Abstract:Thermocapillary instability and formation of waves for a thin viscous falling film with broken time-reversal-symmetry have been discussed in this present study. The film is flowing over a flat, rigid inclined plate with linear temperature variation. The presence of the odd part of the Cauchy stress tensor with odd viscosity coefficient brings new characteristics in thin film flow. The nonlinear evolution model, which tracks the free surface formation for this problem, has been developed using classical long-wave expansion method. Due to the presence of odd viscosity in the liquid, the evolution equation modified significantly. Both spatial and temporal analysis for linear stability has been performed along with the investigation of weakly nonlinear waves, leading the free-surface equation into the famous Kuramoto–Sivashinsky equation. Periodic stationary wave solutions of the full evolution equation confirm the existence of two significant wave families, γ1 and γ2, which are discussed in detail. Formation of the dynamical system and study of different bifurcation analysis and phases diagrams are also studied. The spatiotemporal evolution of the model has been analyzed numerically for different values of the odd viscosity parameter and Marangoni number. The odd viscosity gives stabilizing effect while the increase in Marangoni number increases the instability.

Abstract:We consider a free liquid sheet, taking into account the dependence of surface tension on the temperature or concentration of some pollutant. The sheet dynamics are described within a long-wavelength description. In the presence of viscosity, local thinning of the sheet is driven by a strong temperature gradient across the pinch region, resembling a shock. As a result, for long times the sheet thins exponentially, leading to breakup. We describe the quasi-one-dimensional thickness, velocity and temperature profiles in the pinch region in terms of similarity solutions, which possess a universal structure. Our analytical description agrees quantitatively with numerical simulations.

Steady-states of thin film droplets on chemically heterogeneous substrates

Abstract:We study steady-state thin films on a chemically heterogeneous substrates of finite size, subject to no-flux boundary conditions. Based on the structure of the bifurcation diagram, we classify the one-dimensional steady-state solutions that exist on such substrates into six different branches and develop asymptotic estimates for the steady-states on each branch. We show using perturbation expansions, that leading order solutions provide good predictions of the steady-state thin films on stepwise-patterned substrates. The analysis in one dimension can be extended to axisymmetric solutions. We also examine the influence of the wettability contrast on linear stability and dynamics. Results are also applied to describe two-dimensional droplets on hydrophilic square patches and striped regions used in microfluidic applications.

Instability and rupture of sheared viscous liquid nanofilms

Abstract:Liquid nanofilms are ubiquitous in nature and technology, and their equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium dynamics are key to a multitude of phenomena and processes. We numerically study the evolution and rupture of viscous nanometric films, incorporating the effects of surface tension, van der waals forces, thermal fluctuations and viscous shear. We show that thermal fluctuations create perturbations that can trigger film rupture, but they do not significantly affect the growth rate of the perturbations. The film rupture time can be predicted from a linear stability analysis of the governing thin film equation, by considering the most unstable wavelength and the thermal roughness. Furthermore, applying a sufficiently large unidirectional shear can stabilise large perturbations, creating a finite-amplitude travelling wave instead of film rupture. In contrast, in three dimensions, unidirectional shear does not inhibit rupture, as perturbations are not suppressed in the direction perpendicular to the applied shear. However, if the direction of shear varies in time, the growth of large perturbations is prevented in all directions, and rupture can hence be impeded.

A thin film model for meniscus evolution

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss a particular model arising from sinking of a rigid solid into a thin film of fluid, i.e. a fluid contained between two solid surfaces and part of the fluid surface is in contact with the air. The fluid is governed by Navier-Stokes equation, while the contact point, i.e. where the gas, liquid and solid meet, is assumed to be given by a constant, non-zero contact angle. We consider a scaling limit of the fluid thickness (lubrication approximation) and the contact angle between the fluid-solid and the fluid-gas interfaces is close to $\pi$. This resulting model is a free boundary problem for the equation $h_t + (h^3h_{xxx})_x = 0$, for which we have $h>0$ at the contact point (different from the usual thin film equation with $h=0$ at the contact point). We show that this fourth order quasilinear (non-degenerate) parabolic equation, together with the so-called partial wetting condition at the contact point, is well-posed. Also the contact point in our thin film equation can actually move, contrary to the classical thin film equation for a droplet arising from no-slip condition. Furthermore, we show the global stability of steady state solutions in a periodic setting.

Abstract:Thin liquid films on isothermal substrates, where film is flat and parallel to the substrate, succumb to thermocapillary instabilities and rupture forming local hot-spots. These instabilities are called long wavelength instabilities and are specific to aspect ratios where the liquid film mean thickness is several orders of magnitude less than the substrate characteristic dimension. In the absence of stabilizing gravitational acceleration, the growth rate of thermocapillary instabilities is further intensified, driving the film to rupture at an even earlier time. Numerical simulations of zero gravity dynamics of Newtonian liquid films on a solid, horizontal, isothermal substrate are conducted. When the solid, isothermal substrate is replaced with one that possesses one- dimensional porosity, is fully saturated with the same fluid as that of the liquid film and is deep enough to accommodate all of the liquid on it, it is observed that destabilizing spatial modes are damped thereby preventing rupture and the film lifespan is prolonged. This nonlinear evolution is visualized and quantified using recurrence plots.

Abstract:The use of thin liquid films has expanded beyond lubrication and coatings, and into applications in actuators and adaptive optical elements. In contrast to their predecessors, whose dynamics can be typically captured by modelling infinite or periodic films, these applications are characterized by a finite amount of liquid in an impermeable domain. The global mass conservation constraint, together with common boundary conditions (e.g., pinning) create quantitatively and qualitatively different dynamics than those of infinite films. Mathematically, this manifests itself as a non-self-adjoint problem. This work presents a combined theoretical and experimental study for this problem. We provide a time-dependent closed-form analytical solution for the linearized non-self-adjoint system that arises from these boundary conditions. We highlight that, in contrast to self-adjoint problems, here special care should be given to deriving the adjoint problem to reconstruct the solution based on the eigenfunctions properly. We compare these solutions with those obtained for permeable and periodic boundary conditions, representing common models for self-adjoint thin-film problems. We show that while the initial dynamics are nearly identical, the boundary conditions eventually affect the film deformation as well as its response time. To experimentally illustrate the dynamics and to validate the theoretical model, we fabricated an experimental setup that subjects a thin liquid film to a prescribed normal force distribution through dielectrophoresis, and used high-frame-rate digital holography to measure the film deformation in real-time. The experiments agree well with the model and confirm that confined films exhibit different behaviour which could not be predicted by existing models.

Abstract:A thin film bonded to an elastic substrate and subjected to compressive in-plane stresses may develop wrinkles. In this paper a theoretical model of formation of one-dimensional sinusoidal wrinkles in such a film/substrate system subjected to a commensurate spatially varying temperature field is first presented and then analyzed. It is shown that an initially flat thin film on an elastic substrate can develop controlled wrinkles when subjected to a carefully chosen spatial thermal modulation.

Abstract:Here, we report experimental results on the rupture of flat colloidal films over a large range of volume fractions, 0.00 ≤φ≤ 0.47. The films are formed using a constant fluid volume, ruptured with a needle within a few seconds of formation, and recorded using a high-speed camera. We show that colloidal films rupture in a manner similar to Newtonian fluids, even for high colloidal volume fractions. However, higher-viscosity films made of the same fluid volume show a higher thickness away from the boundary at the time of rupture, possibly due to viscous stresses slowing down the thinning of the film. When allowed to spontaneously rupture instead of manually rupturing right after film formation, the same dense colloidal films show exotic instabilities reminiscent of a wrinkling fabric on the film surface. We hypothesize that these instabilities occur because the film is allowed to thin before rupture, and its thickness may compete with the colloidal particle size. Thus, the film lifetime before rupture has a major role to play in the film rupture dynamics, and the effect of microstructure has dramatic consequences in films that are allowed to spontaneously rupture. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevFluids.8.024002 ©2023 American Physical Society

Abstract:Our recent quasi-two-dimensional thermodynamic description of thin liquid films stabilized by colloidal particles is generalized to describe nonuniform equilibrium states of films in external potentials and nonequilibrium transport processes produced in the film by gradients of thermodynamic forces. Using a Monte Carlo simulation method, we have determined equilibrium equations of state for a film stabilized by a suspension of hard spheres. Employing a multipolar-expansion method combined with a flow-reflection technique, we have also evaluated the short-time film-viscosity coefficients and collective particle mobility.
Thermodynamic approach to the dewetting instability in ultrathin films

Abstract:The fluid dynamics of the classical dewetting instability in ultrathin films is a non-linear process. However, the physical manifestation of the instability in terms of characteristic length and time scales can be described by a linearized form of the initial conditions of the films's dynamics. Alternately, the thermodynamic approach based on equating the rate of free energy decrease to the viscous dissipation [de Gennes, C. R. Acad. Paris.v298, 1984] can give similar information. Here we have evaluated dewetting in the presence of thermocapillary forces arising from a film-thickness (h) dependent temperature. Such a situation can be found during pulsed laser melting of ultrathin metal films where nanoscale effects lead to a local h-dependent temperature. The thermodynamic approach provides an analytical description of this thermocapillary dewetting. The results of this approach agree with those from linear theory and experimental observations provided the minimum value of viscous dissipation is equated to the rate of free energy decrease. The flow boundary condition that produces this minimum viscous dissipation is when the film-substrate tangential stress is zero. The physical implication of this finding is that the spontaneous dewetting instability follows the path of minimum rate of energy loss.
The relation of steady evaporating drops fed by an influx and freely evaporating drops

Abstract:We discuss a thin film evolution equation for a wetting evaporating liquid on a smooth solid substrate. The model is valid for slowly evaporating small sessile droplets when thermal effects are insignificant, while wettability and capillarity play a major role. The model is first employed to study steady evaporating drops that are fed locally through the substrate. An asymptotic analysis focuses on the precursor film and the transition region towards the bulk drop and a numerical continuation of steady drops determines their fully non-linear profiles. Following this, we study the time evolution of freely evaporating drops without influx for several initial drop shapes. As a result we find that drops initially spread if their initial contact angle is larger than the apparent contact angle of large steady evaporating drops with influx. Otherwise they recede right from the beginning.
