Abstract:We will present a consistent description of Hamiltonian dynamics on the ``symplectic extended phase space'' that is analogous to that of a time-\underline{in}dependent Hamiltonian system on the conventional symplectic phase space. The extended Hamiltonian $H_{1}$ and the pertaining extended symplectic structure that establish the proper canonical extension of a conventional Hamiltonian $H$ will be derived from a generalized formulation of Hamilton's variational principle. The extended canonical transformation theory then naturally permits transformations that also map the time scales of original and destination system, while preserving the extended Hamiltonian $H_{1}$, and hence the form of the canonical equations derived from $H_{1}$. The Lorentz transformation, as well as time scaling transformations in celestial mechanics, will be shown to represent particular canonical transformations in the symplectic extended phase space. Furthermore, the generalized canonical transformation approach allows to directly map explicitly time-dependent Hamiltonians into time-independent ones. An ``extended'' generating function that defines transformations of this kind will be presented for the time-dependent damped harmonic oscillator and for a general class of explicitly time-dependent potentials. In the appendix, we will reestablish the proper form of the extended Hamiltonian $H_{1}$ by means of a Legendre transformation of the extended Lagrangian $L_{1}$.

Generalizing Hamiltonian Mechanics with Closed Differential Forms

Abstract:Classical Hamiltonian mechanics, characterized by a single conserved Hamiltonian (energy) and symplectic geometry, `hides' other invariants into symmetries of the Hamiltonian or into the kernel of the Poisson tensor. Nambu mechanics aims to generalize classical Hamiltonian mechanics to ideal dynamical systems bearing two Hamiltonians, but its connection to a suitable geometric framework has remained elusive. This work establishes a novel correspondence between generalized Hamiltonian mechanics, defined for systems with a phase space conservation law (invariance of a closed form) and a matter conservation law (invariance of multiple Hamiltonians), and multisymplectic geometry. The key lies in the invertibility of differential forms of degree higher than 2. We demonstrate that the cornerstone theorems of classical Hamiltonian mechanics (Lie-Darboux and Liouville) require reinterpretation within this new framework, reflecting the unique properties of invertibility in multisymplectic geometry. Furthermore, we present two key theorems that solidify the connection: i) any classical Hamiltonian system with two or more invariants is also a generalized Hamiltonian system and ii) given a generalized Hamiltonian system with two or more invariants, there exists a corresponding classical Hamiltonian system on the level set of all but one invariant, with the remaining invariant playing the role of the Hamiltonian function.

Abstract:Various holonomy phenomena are shown to be instances of the reconstruction procedure for mechanical systems with symmetry. We systematically exploit this point of view for fixed systems (for example with controls on the internal, or reduced, variables) and for slowly moving systems in an adiabatic context. For the latter, we obtain the phases as the holonomy for a connection which synthesizes the Cartan connection for moving mechanical systems with the Hannay-Berry connection for integrable systems. This synthesis allows one to treat in a natural way examples like the ball in the slowly rotating hoop and also non-integrable mechanical systems.
Generalization of Hamiltonian Mechanics to a Three Dimensional Phase Space

Abstract:Classical Hamiltonian mechanics is realized by the action of a Poisson bracket on a Hamiltonian function. The Hamiltonian function is a constant of motion (the energy) of the system. The properties of the Poisson bracket are encapsulated in the symplectic 2-form, a closed second order differential form. Due to closure, the symplectic 2-form is preserved by the Hamiltonian flow, and it assigns an invariant (Liouville) measure on the phase space through the Lie-Darboux theorem. In this paper we propose a generalization of classical Hamiltonian mechanics to a three-dimensional phase space: the classical Poisson bracket is replaced with a generalized Poisson bracket acting on a pair of Hamiltonian functions, while the symplectic 2-form is replaced by a symplectic 3-form. We show that, using the closure of the symplectic 3-form, a result analogous to the classical Lie-Darboux theorem holds: locally, there exist smooth coordinates such that the components of the symplectic 3-form are constants, and the phase space is endowed with a preserved volume element. Furthermore, as in the classical theory, the Jacobi identity for the generalized Poisson bracket mathematically expresses the closure of the associated symplectic form. As a consequence, constant skew-symmetric third order contravariant tensors always define generalized Poisson brackets. This is in contrast with generalizations of Hamiltonian mechanics postulating the fundamental identity as replacement for the Jacobi identity. In particular, we find that the fundamental identity represents a stronger requirement than the closure of the symplectic 3-form.

Abstract:The evolution of a large class of biological, physical and engineering systems can be studied through both dynamical systems theory and Hamiltonian mechanics. The former theory, in particular its specialization to study systems with symmetry, is already well developed and has been used extensively on a wide variety of spatio-temporal systems. There are, however, fewer results on higher-dimensional Hamiltonian systems with symmetry. This lack of results has lead us to investigate the role of symmetry, in particular dihedral symmetry, on high-dimensional coupled Hamiltonian systems. As a representative example, we consider the model equations of a ring of vibratory gyroscopes. The equations are reformulated in a Hamiltonian structure and the corresponding normal forms are derived. Through a normal form analysis, we investigated the effects of various coupling schemes and unraveled the nature of the bifurcations that lead the ring of gyroscopes into and out of synchronization. The Hamiltonian approach is specially useful in investigating the collective behavior of small and large ring sizes and it can be readily extended to other symmetry-related systems.

Hamilton-Jacobi Theorems for Regular Controlled Hamiltonian System and Its Reduced Systems

Abstract:In this paper, we give precisely the geometric constraint conditions of canonical symplectic form and regular reduced symplectic forms for the dynamical vector fields of a regular controlled Hamiltonian (RCH) system and its regular reduced systems, which are called the Type I and Type II of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. At first, we first prove two types of Hamilton-Jacobi theorem for an RCH system on cotangent bundle of a configuration manifold, by using the canonical symplectic form and the dynamical vector field, which are the development of the two types of geometric version of Hamilton-Jacobi theorem for a Hamiltonian system given in Wang \cite{wa17}. Moreover, we also prove two types of Hamilton-Jacobi theorem for a controlled magnetic Hamiltonian (CMH) system by using the magnetic symplectic form and the magnetic Hamiltonian vector field. Secondly, we generalize the above results for a regular reducible RCH system with symmetry and momentum map, and prove two types of Hamilton-Jacobi theorems for the regular point reduced RCH system and the regular orbit reduced RCH system. Thirdly, we prove that the RCH-equivalence for the RCH system, and RpCH-equivalence and RoCH- equivalence for the regular reducible RCH systems with symmetries, leave the solutions of corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi equations invariant. Finally, as an application of the theoretical results, we show the Type I and Type II of Hamilton-Jacobi equations for the $R_p$-reduced controlled rigid body-rotor system and the $R_p$-reduced controlled heavy top-rotor system on the generalizations of rotation group SO(3) and Euclidean group SE(3), respectively. These researches reveal the deeply internal relationships of the geometrical structures of phase spaces, the dynamical vector fields and controls of the RCH system.

Abstract:SynopsisThis paper uses symplectic connections to give a Hamiltonian structure to the first variation equation for a Hamiltonian system along a given dynamic solution. This structure generalises that at an equilibrium solution obtained by restricting the symplectic structure to that point and using the quadratic form associated with the second variation of the Hamiltonian (plus Casimir) as energy. This structure is different from the well-known and elementary tangent space construction. Our results are applied to systems with symmetry and to Lie–Poisson systems in particular.
A Hamilton-Jacobi Formalism for Thermodynamics

Abstract:We show that classical thermodynamics has a formulation in terms of Hamilton-Jacobi theory, analogous to mechanics. Even though the thermodynamic variables come in conjugate pairs such as pressure/volume or temperature/entropy, the phase space is odd-dimensional. For a system with n thermodynamic degrees of freedom it is (2n+1)-dimensional. The equations of state of a substance pick out an n-dimensional submanifold. A family of substances whose equations of state depend on n parameters define a hypersurface of co-dimension one. This can be described by the vanishing of a function which plays the role of a Hamiltonian. The ordinary differential equations (characteristic equations) defined by this function describe a dynamical system on the hypersurface. Its orbits can be used to reconstruct the equations of state. The `time' variable associated to this dynamics is related to, but is not identical to, entropy. After developing this formalism on well-grounded systems such as the van der Waals gases and the Curie-Weiss magnets, we derive a Hamilton-Jacobi equation for black hole thermodynamics in General Relativity. The cosmological constant appears as a constant of integration in this picture.

Abstract:In this paper, some of formulations of Hamilton-Jacobi equations for Hamiltonian system and regular reduced Hamiltonian systems are given. At first, an important lemma is proved, and it is a modification for the corresponding result of Abraham and Marsden in [1], such that we can prove two types of geometric Hamilton-Jacobi theorem for a Hamiltonian system on the cotangent bundle of a configuration manifold, by using the symplectic structure and dynamical vector field. Then these results are generalized to the regular reducible Hamiltonian system with symmetry and momentum map, by using the reduced symplectic structure and the reduced dynamical vector field. The Hamilton-Jacobi theorems are proved and two types of Hamilton-Jacobi equations, for the regular point reduced Hamiltonian system and the regular orbit reduced Hamiltonian system, are obtained. As an application of the theoretical results, the regular point reducible Hamiltonian system on a Lie group is considered, and two types of Lie-Poisson Hamilton-Jacobi equation for the regular point reduced system are given. In particular, the Type I and Type II of Lie-Poisson Hamilton-Jacobi equations for the regular point reduced rigid body and heavy top systems are shown, respectively.

Abstract:This work conducts a Hamilton-Jacobi analysis of classical dynamical systems with internal constraints. We examine four systems, all previously analyzed by David Brown: three with familiar components (point masses, springs, rods, ropes, and pulleys) and one chosen specifically for its detailed illustration of the Dirac-Bergmann algorithm's logical steps. Including this fourth system allows for a direct and insightful comparison with the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism, thereby deepening our understanding of both methods. To provide a thorough analysis, we classify the systems based on their constraints: non-involutive, involutive, and a combination of both. We then use generalized brackets to ensure the theory's integrability, systematically remove non-involutive constraints, and derive the equations of motion. This approach effectively showcases the Hamilton-Jacobi method's ability to handle complex constraint structures. Additionally, our study includes an analysis of a gauge system, highlighting the versatility and broad applicability of the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism. By comparing our results with those from the Dirac-Bergmann and Faddeev-Jackiw algorithms, we demonstrate that the Hamilton-Jacobi approach is simpler and more efficient in its mathematical operations and offers advantages in computational implementation.

Abstract:The VST (VLT Survey Telescope) is a 2.6 m class Alt-Az telescope to be installed at Mount Paranal in the Atacama desert, Chile, in the European Southern Observatory (ESO) site. The VST is a wide-field imaging facility planned to supply databases for the ESO Very Large Telescope (VLT) science and carry out stand-alone observations in the UV to I spectral range. This paper will focus on the distributed control system of active optics based on CAN bus and PIC microcontrollers. Both axial and radial pads of the primary mirror will be equipped by astatic lever supports controlled by microcontroller units. The same CAN bus + microcontroller boards approach will be used for the temperature acquisition modules.

Symplectic mechanics of relativistic spinning compact bodies II.: Canonical formalism in the Schwarzschild spacetime

Abstract:This work constitutes the second part of a series of studies that aim to utilise tools from Hamiltonian mechanics to investigate the motion of an extended body in general relativity. The first part of this work [Refs. [1, 2]] constructed a ten-dimensional, covariant Hamiltonian framework encompassing all the linear-in-spin corrections to the geodesic motion in arbitrary spacetime. This framework was proven to be integrable in the Schwarzschild and Kerr spacetimes, specifically. The present work translates this abstract integrability result into tangible applications for linear-in-spin Hamiltonian dynamics of a compact object in a Schwarzschild spacetime. In particular, a canonical system of coordinates is constructed explicitly, which exploits the spherical symmetry of the Schwarzschild spacetime. These coordinates are based on a relativistic generalization of the classical Andoyer variables of Newtonian rigid body motion. This canonical setup allows us to derive ready-to-use formulae for action-angle coordinates and gauge-invariant Hamiltonian frequencies, which automatically include all linear-in-spin effects. No external parameters or ad hoc choices are necessary, and the framework can be used to find complete solutions by quadrature of generic (bound or unbound), linear-in-spin orbits, including orbital inclination, precession and eccentricity, as well as spin precession. The efficacy of the formalism is demonstrated here in the context of circular orbits with arbitrary spin and orbital precession, with the results validated against known results in the literature.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce the notion of infinite dimensional Jacobi structure to describe the geometrical structure of a class of nonlocal Hamiltonian systems which appear naturally when applying reciprocal transformations to Hamiltonian evolutionary PDEs. We prove that our class of infinite dimensional Jacobi structures is invariant under the action of reciprocal transformations that only change the spatial variable. The main technical tool is in a suitable generalization of the classical Schouten–Nijenhuis bracket to the space of the so called quasi-local multi-vectors, and a simple realization of this structure in the framework of supermanifolds. These constructions are used to compute the Lichnerowicz–Jacobi cohomologies and to prove a Darboux theorem for Jacobi structures with hydrodynamic leading terms. We also introduce the notion of bi-Jacobi structures, and consider the integrability of a system of evolutionary PDEs that possesses a bi-Jacobi structure.

Abstract:An outstanding property of any Hamiltonian system is the symplecticity of its flow, namely, the continuous trajectory preserves volume in phase space. Given a symplectic but discrete trajectory generated by a transition matrix applied at a fixed time-increment ($\tau > 0$), it was generally believed that there exists a unique Hamiltonian producing a continuous trajectory that coincides at all discrete times ($t = n\tau$ with $n$ integers) as long as $\tau$ is small enough. However, it is now exactly demonstrated that, for any given discrete symplectic dynamics of a harmonic oscillator, there exist an infinite number of real-valued Hamiltonians for any small value of $\tau$ and an infinite number of complex-valued Hamiltonians for any large value of $\tau$. In addition, when the transition matrix is similar to a Jordan normal form with the supradiagonal element of $1$ and the two identical diagonal elements of either $1$ or $-1$, only one solution to the Hamiltonian is found for the case with the diagonal elements of $1$, but no solution can be found for the other case.

Abstract:The equivalence postulate approach to quantum mechanics aims to formulate quantum mechanics from a fundamental geometrical principle. Underlying the formulation there exists a basic cocycle condition which is invariant under $D$--dimensional Möbius transformations with respect to the Euclidean or Minkowski metrics. The invariance under global Möbius transformations implies that spatial space is compact. Furthermore, it implies energy quantisation and undefinability of quantum trajectories without assuming any prior interpretation of the wave function. The approach may be viewed as conventional quantum mechanics with the caveat that spatial space is compact, as dictated by the Möbius symmetry, with the classical limit corresponding to the decompactification limit. Correspondingly, there exists a finite length scale in the formalism and consequently an intrinsic regularisation scheme. Evidence for the compactness of space may exist in the cosmic microwave background radiation.

Abstract:The isospectral set of the Dirac matrix D=d+d* consists of orthogonal Q for which Q* D Q is an equivalent Dirac matrix. It can serve as the symmetry of a finite geometry G. The symmetry is a subset of the orthogonal group or unitary group and isospectral Lax deformations produce commuting flows d/dt D=[B(g(D)),D] on this symmetry space. In this note, we remark that like in the Toda case, D_t=Q_t* D_0 Q_t with exp(-t g(D))=Q_t R_t solves the Lax system.

Abstract:We present a non-trivial metric tensor field on the space of 2-by-2 real-valued, symmetric matrices whose Levi-Civita connection renders frames of eigenvectors parallel. This results in fundamental reimagining of the space of symmetric matrices as a curved manifold (rather than a flat vector space) and reduces the computation of eigenvectors of one-parameter-families of matrices to a single computation of eigenvectors at an initial point, while the rest are obtained by the parallel transport ODE. Our work has important applications to vibrations of physical systems whose topology is directly explained by the non-trivial holonomy of the spaces of symmetric matrices.

Schrödinger symmetry of Schwarzschild-(A)dS black hole mechanics

Abstract:We show that the dynamics of Schwarzschild-(A)dS black holes admits a symmetry under the 2d Schrödinger group, whatever the sign or value of the cosmological constant. This is achieved by reformulating the spherically-symmetric reduction of general relativity as a 2d mechanical system with a non-trivial potential controlled by the cosmological constant, and explicitly identifying the conserved charges for black hole mechanics. We expect the Schrödinger symmetry to drive the dynamics of quantum Schwarzschild-(A)dS black holes. This suggests that Schrödinger-preserving non-linear deformations (of the Gross-Piteavskii type) should capture universal quantum gravity corrections to the black hole geometry. Such scenario could be realized in condensed matter analogue models.
