Abstract:This paper proposes a novel approach that combines variational integration with the bonded discrete element method (BDEM) to achieve faster and more accurate fracture simulations. The approach leverages the efficiency of implicit integration and the accuracy of BDEM in modeling fracture phenomena. We introduce a variational integrator and a manifold optimization approach utilizing a nullspace operator to speed up the solving of quaternion-constrained systems. Additionally, the paper presents an element packing and surface reconstruction method specifically designed for bonded discrete element methods. Results from the experiments prove that the proposed method offers 2.8 to 12 times faster state-of-the-art methods.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is: in the field of physical simulation, the existing Discrete Element Method (DEM) and its extension, the Bonded Discrete Element Method (BDEM), have the problem of low computational efficiency when simulating crack and fracture phenomena. Specifically: 1. **Computational efficiency problem**: The traditional BDEM method requires a very small time step to ensure numerical stability, which leads to high computational costs, especially when dealing with large - scale particle systems. 2. **Treatment of rotational degrees of freedom**: In BDEM, directly considering rotational degrees of freedom (DoFs) as system variables is a significant feature, but how to efficiently handle these rotational degrees of freedom (especially using quaternions to represent rotation) remains a challenge. 3. **Solution of constraint conditions**: In the BDEM system, especially when dealing with rigid - body rotation, the solution of quaternion constraints (i.e., keeping the quaternion as a unit quaternion) is also a complex and time - consuming process. To solve these problems, the author proposes a new method - the Variational Bonded Discrete Element Method (VBDEM), which combines variational integration with BDEM and introduces manifold optimization techniques. The main objectives of this method are: - **Improve computational efficiency**: Through implicit integration methods and efficient optimization algorithms, achieve a faster simulation speed than existing methods. - **Simulate crack and fracture phenomena more accurately**: Utilize the advantages of BDEM to model the crack propagation process more precisely. - **Effectively handle rotational degrees of freedom and constraint conditions**: By introducing variational integrators and manifold optimization methods, especially the optimization for quaternion constraints, the stability and solution efficiency of the system are improved. Experimental results show that this method can provide a speed - up of 2.8 to 12 times compared to the existing state - of - the - art methods while maintaining high accuracy.
