Abstract:We consider the stable assignment problem on a graph with nonnegative real capacities on the edges and quotas on the vertices, in which the preferences of agents are given via diversifying choice functions. We prove that for any input of the problem, there exists exactly one stable assignment, and propose a polynomial time algorithm to find it.

Abstract:We consider one variant of stable assignment problems in a bipartite graph endowed with nonnegative capacities on the edges and quotas on the vertices. It can be viewed as a generalization of the stable allocation problem introduced by Ba\Hıou and Balinsky, which arises when strong linear orders of preferences on the vertices in the latter are replaced by weak ones. At the same time, our stability problem can be stated in the framework of a theory by Alkan and Gale on stable schedule matchings generated by choice functions of a wide scope. In our case, the choice functions are of a special, so-called mixed, type.

A Distributed Algorithm for Resource Allocation Over Dynamic Digraphs.

Abstract:This paper studies a distributed resource allocation problem for a multiagent network with a time-varying digraph. Each agent in the network is associated with a local variable (resource) and a convex cost function. The goal is to collectively minimize the total cost in a distributed fashion, subject to individual resource constraints, and collective equality constraints. The main challenge of the problem is due to the local information structure imposed by the time-varying digraph that should be considered as part of the problem formulation. This paper develops a nonnegative surplus-based distributed optimization algorithm. It is shown that the proposed distributed algorithm converges to the global minimizer provided that the time-varying digraph is jointly strongly connected. Also, all the parameters used in the proposed algorithm rely only on local knowledge.

Abstract:This paper studies the resource allocation problem with convex objective functions, subject to individual resource constraints, equality constraints, and integer constraints. The goal is to minimize the total cost when allocating the total resource D to n agents. We propose a novel min-heap and optimization relaxation based centralized algorithm and prove that it has a computational complexity of O(nlogn+nlogD) when the resource constraints of individual agents are [0, D], which outperforms the best known multi-phase algorithm with O(nlognlogD). By extending the centralized algorithm, we present a consensus based distributed optimization algorithm to solve the same problem. It is shown that the proposed distributed algorithm converges to a global minimizer provided that the digraph (representing the interaction topology of the agents) is strongly connected. All the updates used in the distributed algorithm rely only on local knowledge.

Abstract:We study the problem of assigning agents to the vertices of a graph such that no pair of neighbors can benefit from swapping assignments -- a property we term neighborhood stability. We further assume that agents' utilities are based solely on their preferences over the assignees of adjacent vertices and that those preferences are binary. Having shown that even this very restricted setting does not guarantee neighborhood stable assignments, we focus on special cases that provide such guarantees. We show that when the graph is a cycle or a path, a neighborhood stable assignment always exists for any preference profile. Furthermore, we give a general condition under which neighborhood stable assignments always exist. For each of these results, we give a polynomial-time algorithm to compute a neighborhood stable assignment.

Abstract:The stable allocation problem is one of the broadest extensions of the well-known stable marriage problem. In an allocation problem, edges of a bipartite graph have capacities and vertices have quotas to fill. Here we investigate the case of uncoordinated processes in stable allocation instances. In this setting, a feasible allocation is given and the aim is to reach a stable allocation by raising the value of the allocation along blocking edges and reducing it on worse edges if needed. Do such myopic changes lead to a stable solution? In our present work, we analyze both better and best response dynamics from an algorithmic point of view. With the help of two deterministic algorithms we show that random procedures reach a stable solution with probability one for all rational input data in both cases. Surprisingly, while there is a polynomial path to stability when better response strategies are played (even for irrational input data), the more intuitive best response steps may require exponential time. We also study the special case of correlated markets. There, random best response strategies lead to a stable allocation in expected polynomial time.

Stable Roommate Problem with Diversity Preferences

Abstract:In the multidimensional stable roommate problem, agents have to be allocated to rooms and have preferences over sets of potential roommates. We study the complexity of finding good allocations of agents to rooms under the assumption that agents have diversity preferences (Bredereck, Elkind, Igarashi, AAMAS'19): each agent belongs to one of the two types (e.g., juniors and seniors, artists and engineers), and agents’ preferences over rooms depend solely on the fraction of agents of their own type among their potential roommates. We consider various solution concepts for this setting, such as core and exchange stability, Pareto optimality and envy-freeness. On the negative side, we prove that envy-free, core stable or (strongly) exchange stable outcomes may fail to exist and that the associated decision problems are NP-complete. On the positive side, we show that these problems are in FPT with respect to the room size, which is not the case for the general stable roommate problem.

Abstract:In this paper we consider stable matchings subject to assignment constraints. These are matchings that require certain assigned pairs to be included, insist that some other assigned pairs are not, and, importantly, are stable. Our main contribution is an algorithm, based on the iterated deletion of unattractive alternatives, that determines if assignment constraints are compatible with stability. Whenever there is a stable matching that satisfies the assignment constraints, our algorithm outputs all of them (each in polynomial time per solution). This provides market designers with (i) a tool to test the feasibility of stable matchings subject to assignment constraints, and (ii) a tool to implement them when feasible.

Abstract:This paper studies a distributed dynamic resource allocation problem for a multi-agent network with a strongly connected digraph, which has increased an equality constraint for individual node requirement from the point of dynamic prediction horizon. Each agent at each prediction horizon in the network is associated with a local resource and a quadratic convex cost function. The goal is to minimize the total cost in a distributed manner and subject to state constraints and collective equality constraints as well as an extra individual requirement simultaneously. With a fully distributed iteration setup, each node individual requirement is ensured and the globally optimal solution is obtained. The convergence of the proposed algorithm is verified theoretically according to eigenvalue perturbation theory and illustrated by simulation results.

Abstract:We introduce and analyze an extension to the matching problem on a weighted bipartite graph: Assignment with Type Constraints. The two parts of the graph are partitioned into subsets called types and blocks; we seek a matching with the largest sum of weights under the constraint that there is a pre-specified cap on the number of vertices matched in every type-block pair. Our primary motivation stems from the public housing program of Singapore, accounting for over 70% of its residential real estate. To promote ethnic diversity within its housing projects, Singapore imposes ethnicity quotas: each new housing development comprises blocks of flats and each ethnicity-based group in the population must not own more than a certain percentage of flats in a block. Other domains using similar hard capacity constraints include matching prospective students to schools or medical residents to hospitals. Limiting agents' choices for ensuring diversity in this manner naturally entails some welfare loss. One of our goals is to study the trade-off between diversity and social welfare in such settings. We first show that, while the classic assignment program is polynomial-time computable, adding diversity constraints makes it computationally intractable; however, we identify a $\tfrac{1}{2}$-approximation algorithm, as well as reasonable assumptions on the weights that permit poly-time algorithms. Next, we provide two upper bounds on the price of diversity -- a measure of the loss in welfare incurred by imposing diversity constraints -- as functions of natural problem parameters. We conclude the paper with simulations based on publicly available data from two diversity-constrained allocation problems -- Singapore Public Housing and Chicago School Choice -- which shed light on how the constrained maximization as well as lottery-based variants perform in practice.

Abstract:This work investigates a finite time horizon resource allocation problem under a strongly connected multi-agent network. In this network, each agent at each time is associated with a resource variable and a quadratic cost function. The objective is to minimise the total cost of all agents over the finite time horizon in a distributed manner, while enforcing a total amount of resources per time unit and per agent. The major challenge of this problem lies in the coupled equality constraints across the agents and time periods, which should be satisfied simultaneously in the end. In addition, the local information structure imposed by the digraph within the time horizon should be taken into account when solving the problem. This study develops a consensus-based multipliers decomposition method to solve the problem. The authors show that the convergence and optimality can be ensured provided that the digraph within the time horizon is strongly connected. Numerical simulations are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:We investigate the following many-to-one stable matching problem with diversity constraints (SMTI-Diverse): Given a set of students and a set of colleges which have preferences over each other, where the students have overlapping types, and the colleges each have a total capacity as well as quotas for individual types (the diversity constraints), is there a matching satisfying all diversity constraints such that no unmatched student-college pair has an incentive to deviate? SMTI-Diverse is known to be NP-hard. However, as opposed to the NP-membership claims in the literature [Aziz et al., AAMAS 2019; Huang, SODA 2010], we prove that it is beyond NP: it is complete for the complexity class $\Sigma^{\text{P}}_2$. In addition, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the problem's complexity from the viewpoint of natural restrictions to inputs and obtain new algorithms for the problem.

Abstract:A group of $n$ agents with numerical preferences for each other are to be assigned to the $n$ seats of a dining table. We study two natural topologies:~circular (cycle) tables and panel (path) tables. For a given seating arrangement, an agent's utility is the sum of their preference values towards their (at most two) direct neighbors. An arrangement is envy-free if no agent strictly prefers someone else's seat, and it is stable if no two agents strictly prefer each other's seats. Recently, it was shown that for both paths and cycles it is NP-hard to decide whether an envy-free arrangement exists, even for symmetric binary preferences. In contrast, we show that, if agents come from a bounded number of classes, the problem is solvable in polynomial time for arbitrarily-valued possibly asymmetric preferences, including outputting an arrangement if possible. We also give simpler proofs of the previous hardness results if preferences are allowed to be asymmetric. For stability, it is known that deciding the existence of stable arrangements is NP-hard for both topologies, but only if sufficiently-many numerical values are allowed. As it turns out, even constructing unstable instances can be challenging in certain cases, e.g., binary values. We completely characterize the existence of stable arrangements based on the number of distinct values in the preference matrix and the number of agent classes. We also ask the same question for non-negative values and give an almost-complete characterization, the most interesting outstanding case being that of paths with two-valued non-negative preferences, for which we experimentally find that stable arrangements always exist and prove it under the additional constraint that agents can only swap seats when sitting at most two positions away. We moreover give a polynomial algorithm for determining a stable arrangement assuming a bounded number of classes.

Abstract:We consider a general stable flow problem in a directed and capacitated network, where each vertex has a strict preference list over the incoming and outgoing edges. A flow is stable if no group of vertices forming a path can mutually benefit by rerouting the flow. Motivated by applications in supply chain networks, we generalize the traditional Kirchhoff's law, requiring the outflow is equal to the inflow at every nonterminal node, to a monotone piecewise linear relationship between the inflows and the outflows. We show the existence of a stable flow using Scarf's Lemma, and provide a polynomial time algorithm to find such a stable flow. We further show that finding a minimum cost generalized stable network is NP-hard, while the problem is polynomial time solvable for the traditional stable flow satisfying Kirchhoff's law.

Abstract:Motivated by real-world applications such as the allocation of public housing, we examine the problem of assigning a group of agents to vertices (e.g., spatial locations) of a network so that the diversity level is maximized. Specifically, agents are of two types (characterized by features), and we measure diversity by the number of agents who have at least one neighbor of a different type. This problem is known to be NP-hard, and we focus on developing approximation algorithms with provable performance guarantees. We first present a local-improvement algorithm for general graphs that provides an approximation factor of 1/2. For the special case where the sizes of agent subgroups are similar, we present a randomized approach based on semidefinite programming that yields an approximation factor better than 1/2. Further, we show that the problem can be solved efficiently when the underlying graph is treewidth-bounded and obtain a polynomial time approximation scheme (PTAS) for the problem on planar graphs. Lastly, we conduct experiments to evaluate the per-performance of the proposed algorithms on synthetic and real-world networks.

Abstract:We consider the problem of determining whether a target item assignment can be reached from an initial item assignment by a sequence of pairwise exchanges of items between agents. In particular, we consider the situation where each agent has a dichotomous preference over the items, that is, each agent evaluates each item as acceptable or unacceptable. Furthermore, we assume that communication between agents is limited, and the relationship is represented by an undirected graph. Then, a pair of agents can exchange their items only if they are connected by an edge and the involved items are acceptable. We prove that this problem is PSPACE-complete even when the communication graph is complete (that is, every pair of agents can exchange their items), and this problem can be solved in polynomial time if an input graph is a tree.

Abstract:We extend the familiar shortest path problem by supposing that agents have demands over multiple periods. This potentially allows agents to combine their paths if their demands are complementary; for instance if one agent only needs a connection to the source in the summer while the other requires it only in the winter. We not only show that the resulting cost sharing problem always generates a totally balanced game, regardless of the number of agents and periods, the cost structure or the demand profile, but that all totally balanced games are representable as multi-period shortest path problems. We then exploit the fact that the model encompasses many well-studied problems to obtain or reobtain balancedness and total balancedness results for source-connection problems, assignment problems and minimum coloring problems.

Abstract:In many applications such as rationing medical care and supplies, university admissions, and the assignment of public housing, the decision of who receives an allocation can be justified by various normative criteria. Such settings have motivated the following priority-respecting allocation problem: several categories, each with a quota of interchangeable items, wish to allocate the items among a set of agents. Each category has a list of eligible agents and a priority ordering over these agents; agents may be eligible in multiple categories. The goal is to select a valid allocation: one that respects quotas, eligibility, and priorities and ensures Pareto efficiency. We provide an algorithmic characterization of all valid allocations, exhibiting a bijection between sets of agents who can be allocated and maximum-weight matchings under carefully chosen rank-based weights. While prior work provides a polynomial-time algorithm to locate a valid allocation, our characterization admits a simpler algorithm that enables two wide-reaching extensions: 1. Selecting valid allocations that satisfy additional criteria: Via three examples -- inclusion/exclusion of some chosen agent; agent-side Pareto efficiency vs. welfare maximization; and fairness from the perspective of allocated vs. unallocated agents -- we show that finding priority-respecting allocations subject to some secondary constraint straddles a complexity knife-edge; in each example, one problem variant can be solved efficiently, while its variant is NP-hard. 2. Efficiency-envy tradeoffs in dynamic allocation: In settings where allocations must be made to T agents arriving sequentially via some stochastic process, we show that while insisting on zero priority violations leads to an Omega(T) loss in efficiency, one can design allocation policies ensuring that the sum of the efficiency loss and priority violations in hindsight is O(1).

Abstract:Makespan minimization on unrelated machines is a classic problem in approximation algorithms. No polynomial time (2 -- δ)-approximation algorithm is known for the problem for constant δ > 0. This is true even for certain special cases, most notably the restricted assignment problem where each job has the same load on any machine but can be assigned to one from a specified subset. Recently in a breakthrough result, Svensson [16] proved that the integrality gap of a certain configuration LP relaxation is upper bounded by 1.95 for the restricted assignment problem; however, the rounding algorithm is not known to run in polynomial time.In this paper we consider the (1, ε)-restricted assignment problem where each job is either heavy (pj = 1) or light (pj = ε), for some parameter ε > 0. Our main result is a (2 -- δ)-approximate polynomial time algorithm for the (1, ε)-restricted assignment problem for a fixed constant δ > 0. Even for this special case, the best polynomial-time approximation factor known so far is 2. We obtain this result by rounding the configuration LP relaxation for this problem. A simple reduction from vertex cover shows that this special case remains NP-hard to approximate to within a factor better than 7/6.
The popular assignment problem: when cardinality is more important than popularity

Abstract:We consider a matching problem in a bipartite graph $G=(A\cup B,E)$ where nodes in $A$ are agents having preferences in partial order over their neighbors, while nodes in $B$ are objects without preferences. We propose a polynomial-time combinatorial algorithm based on LP duality that finds a maximum matching or assignment in $G$ that is popular among all maximum matchings, if there exists one. Our algorithm can also be used to achieve a trade-off between popularity and cardinality by imposing a penalty on unmatched nodes in $A$. We also provide an $O^*(|E|^k)$ algorithm that finds an assignment whose unpopularity margin is at most $k$; this algorithm is essentially optimal, since the problem is $\mathsf{NP}$-complete and $\mathsf{W}_l[1]$-hard with parameter $k$. We also prove that finding a popular assignment of minimum cost when each edge has an associated binary cost is $\mathsf{NP}$-hard, even if agents have strict preferences. By contrast, we propose a polynomial-time algorithm for the variant of the popular assignment problem with forced/forbidden edges. Finally, we present an application in the context of housing markets.
