Abstract:Suppose that $q$ is a prime power such that $q\equiv~2\pmod{3}$. By using Kantor's model of $Q^+(7,q)$, we study the orbit structure of the action of $\textup{PSU}_3(q)$ on the polar space $Q^+(7,q)$ and obtain new $(q^2+q)$- and $q^3$-ovoids with an automorphism group $\textup{PSU}_3(q)$. In this way, we determine all $\textup{PSU}_3(q)$-invariant intriguing sets of $Q^+(7,q)$. It turns out that such an intriguing set is either the unitary ovoid, one of the two new $m$-ovoids, or their complements.

Abstract:We compute the total Stiefel-Whitney Classes (SWCs) for orthogonal representations of special linear groups $\text{SL}(n,q)$ when $n$ and $q$ are odd. These classes are expressed in terms of character values at diagonal elements of order $2$. We give several consequences, and work out the $4$th SWC explicitly, and the $8$th SWC when the $4$th vanishes.

Abstract:We study the numbers of involutions and their relation to Frobenius-Schur indicators in the groups $\mathrm{SO}^{\pm}(n,q)$ and $\Omega^{\pm}(n,q)$. Our point of view for this study comes from two motivations. The first is the conjecture that a finite simple group $G$ is strongly real (all elements are conjugate to their inverses by an involution) if and only if it is totally orthogonal (all Frobenius-Schur indicators are 1), and we are able to show this holds for all finite simple groups $G$ other than the groups $\mathrm{Sp}(2n,q)$ with $q$ even or $\Omega^{\pm}(4m,q)$ with $q$ even. We prove computationally that for small $n$ and $m$ this statement indeed holds for these groups by equating their character degree sums to the number of involutions. We also prove a result on a certain twisted indicator for the groups $\mathrm{SO}^{\pm}(4m+2,q)$ with $q$ odd. Our second motivation is to continue the work of Fulman, Guralnick, and Stanton on generating function and asymptotics for involutions in classical groups. We extend their work by finding generating functions for the numbers of involutions in $\mathrm{SO}^{\pm}(n,q)$ and $\Omega^{\pm}(n,q)$ for all $q$, and we use these to compute the asymptotic behavior for the number of involutions in these groups when $q$ is fixed and $n$ grows.

Abstract:In this paper, we compute the conjugacy classes and the list of irreducible characters of GSp(4,q), where q is odd. We also determine precisely which irreducible characters are non-cuspidal and which are generic. These characters are then used to compute dimensions of certain subspaces of fixed vectors of smooth admissible non-supercuspidal representations of GSp(4,F), where F is a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero with residue field of order q.

Singularities of orthogonal and symplectic determinantal varieties

Abstract:Let either $GL(E)\times SO(F)$ or $GL(E)\times Sp(F)$ act naturally on the space of matrices $E\otimes F$. There are only finitely many orbits, and the orbit closures are orthogonal and symplectic generalizations of determinantal varieties, which can be described similarly using rank conditions. In this paper, we study the singularities of these varieties and describe their defining equations. We prove that in the symplectic case, the orbit closures are normal with good filtrations, and in characteristic $0$ have rational singularities. In the orthogonal case we show that most orbit closures will have the same properties, and determine precisely the exceptions to this.

Abstract:We prove a new determinantal formula for the characters of irreducible representations of orthosymplectic Lie superalgebras analogous to the formula developed by Moens and Jeugt (J Algebraic Combin 17(3):283–307, 2003) for general linear Lie superalgebras. Our proof uses the Jacobi–Trudi type formulas for orthosymplectic characters. As a consequence, we show that the odd symplectic characters introduced by Proctor (Invent Math 92(2):307–332, 1988) are the same as the orthosymplectic characters with some specialized indeterminates. We also give a generalization of an odd symplectic character identity due to Brent, Krattenthaler and Warnaar (J Combin Theory Ser A 144:80–138, 2016).

Abstract:Let $K$ be a field of characteristic zero and let $\mathfrak{sl}_2 (K)$ be the 3-dimensional simple Lie algebra over $K$. In this paper we describe a finite basis for the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded identities of the adjoint representation of $\mathfrak{sl}_2 (K)$, or equivalently, the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-graded identities for the pair $(M_3(K), \mathfrak{sl}_2 (K))$. We work with the canonical grading on $\mathfrak{sl}_2 (K)$ and the only nontrivial $\mathbb{Z}_2$-grading of the associative algebra $M_3(K)$ induced by that on $\mathfrak{sl}_2(K)$.

Abstract:A known result for the finite general linear group $\GL(n,\FF_q)$ and for the finite unitary group $\U(n,\FF_{q^2})$ posits that the sum of the irreducible character degrees is equal to the number of symmetric matrices in the group. Fulman and Guralnick extended this result by considering sums of irreducible characters evaluated at an arbitrary conjugacy class of $\GL(n,\FF_q)$. We develop an explicit formula for the value of the permutation character of $\U(2n,\FF_{q^2})$ over $\Sp(2n,\FF_q)$ evaluated an an arbitrary conjugacy class and use results concerning Gelfand-Graev characters to obtain an analogous formula for $\U(n,\FF_{q^2})$ in the case where $q$ is an odd prime. These results are also given as probabilistic statements.

Abstract:The complete classification of the finite simple groups that are $(2,3)$-generated is a problem which is still open only for orthogonal groups. Here, we construct $(2, 3)$-generators for the finite odd-dimensional orthogonal groups $\Omega_{2k+1}(q)$, $k\geq 4$. As a byproduct we also obtain $(2,3)$-generators for $\Omega_{4k}^+(q)$ with $k\geq 3$ and $q$ odd, and for $\Omega_{4k+2}^\pm(q)$ with $k\geq 4$ and $q\equiv \pm 1 \pmod 4$.

Abstract:We define for real $q$ a unital $*$-algebra $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R}))$ quantizing the universal enveloping $*$-algebra of $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R})$. The $*$-algebra $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R}))$ is realized as a $*$-subalgebra of the Drinfeld double of $U_q(\mathfrak{su}(2))$ and its dual Hopf $*$-algebra $\mathcal{O}_q(SU(2))$, generated by the equatorial Podleś sphere coideal $*$-subalgebra $\mathcal{O}_q(K\backslash SU(2))$ of $\mathcal{O}_q(SU(2))$ and its associated orthogonal coideal $*$-subalgebra $U_q(\mathfrak{k}) \subseteq U_q(\mathfrak{su}(2))$. We then classify all the irreducible $*$-representations of $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R}))$.

Abstract:The quasi-Frobenius-Lusztig kernel ${\operatorname{Q}}\mathbf{u}_{q}(\mathfrak{sl}_{2})$ associated with $\mathfrak{sl}_{2}$ has been constructed in [9]. In this paper we study the representations of this small quasi-quantum group. We give a complete list of non-isomorphic indecomposables and the tensor product decomposition rules for simples and projectives. A description of the Grothendieck ring is also provided.

Abstract:For every absolutely irreducible orthogonal representation of a twisted form of SL 2 \operatorname {SL}_2 over a field of characteristic zero, we compute the “unique” symmetric bilinear form that is invariant under the group action. We also prove the analogous result for Weyl modules in prime characteristic (including characteristic 2) and an isomorphism between two symmetric bilinear forms given by binomial coefficients.

Abstract:We study Kloosterman sums on the orthogonal groups $SO_{3,3}$ and $SO_{4,2}$, associated to short elements of their respective Weyl groups. An explicit description for these sums is obtained in terms of multi-dimensional exponential sums. These are bounded by a combination of methods from algebraic geometry and $p$-adic analysis.

Abstract:We determine the smallest irreducible Brauer characters for finite quasi-simple orthogonal type groups in non-defining characteristic. Under some restrictions on the characteristic we also prove a gap result showing that the next larger irreducible Brauer characters have a degree roughly the square of those of the smallest non-trivial characters.

Abstract:This work presents a classification of $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_2)$-symmetries on the quantum disc. The principal invariant of such classification, the grading jump, is introduced. It turns out that, under the present subjects, the grading jump can take only 3 values: $0$, $1$, $-1$. The subcollection of the complete collection of symmetries is extracted in such a way that the selected symmetries satisfy certain compatibility condition for involutions.

Abstract:Some time ago, Rideau and Winternitz introduced a realization of the quantum algebra su_q(2) on a real two-dimensional sphere, or a real plane, and constructed a basis for its representations in terms of q-special functions, which can be expressed in terms of q-Vilenkin functions. In their study, the values of q were implicitly restricted to q in R^+. In the present paper, we extend their work to the case of generic values of q in S^1 (i.e., q values different from a root of unity). In addition, we unitarize the representations for both types of q values, q in R^+ and generic q in S^1, by determining some appropriate scalar products.
