Abstract:Over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic, we classify smooth Fano threefolds of Picard number one whose anti-canonical linear systems are not very ample. Furthermore, we also prove that an anti-canonically embedded Fano threefold of genus at least five is an intersection of quadrics.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a smooth Fano threefold over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. Assume that $|-K_X|$ is very ample and each of the index and the Picard number is equal to one. We prove that $3 \leq g \leq 12$ and $g \neq 11$ for the genus $g$ of $X$. Moreover, we show that there exists no smooth curve on $X$ along which the blowup is Fano.

Abstract:We prove that Kodaira vanishing holds for an arbitrary smooth Fano threefold in positive characteristic. To this end, we show that it is quasi-F-split when the Picard number or the Fano index is larger than one. We also establish Akizuki-Nakano vanishing for smooth Fano threefolds when the Picard number or the Fano index is larger than one, and therefore they lift to the ring of Witt vectors.

Abstract:In characteristic 0, the Campana-Peternell conjecture claims that the only smooth Fano variety with nef tangent bundle should be homogeneous. In this paper, we study the positive characteristic version of the Campana-Peternell conjecture. In particular, we give an affirmative answer for Fano 4-folds with nef tangent bundle and Picard number greater than one.

Abstract:We classify all 1-nodal degenerations of smooth Fano threefolds with Picard number 1 (both nonfactorial and factorial) and describe their geometry. In particular, we describe a relation between such degenerations and smooth Fano threefolds of higher Picard rank and with unprojections of complete intersection varieties.

Assume that $X$ contains a divisor $A$, which is isomorphic to a rational homogeneous space with Picard number one, such that the conormal bundle $\mathscr{N}^*_{A/X}$ is ample over $A$. Abstract:For $n\geq 4$, let $X$ be a complex smooth Fano $n$-fold whose minimal anticanonical degree of non-free rational curves on $X$ is at least $n-2$. We classify extremal contractions of such varieties. As an application, we obtain a classification of Fano fourfolds with pseudoindex and Picard number greater than one. Combining this result with previous results, we complete the classification of smooth Fano $n$-folds with pseudoindex at least $n-2$ and Picard number greater than one. This can be seen as a generalization of various previous results. We also discuss the relations between pseudoindex and other invariants of Fano varieties.

Abstract:In this note, an overview of Calabi-Yau varieties in positive characteristic is presented. Although Calabi-Yau varieties in characteristic zero are unobstructed, there are examples of Calabi-Yau threefolds in positive characteristic which cannot be lifted to characteristic zero, although one-dimensional and two-dimensional Calabi-Yau varieties, i.e., elliptic curves and K3 surfaces, are all liftable to characteristic zero. In this respect, Calabi-Yau threefolds in positive characteristic are interesting in view of deformation theory and they are still very mysterious.

Abstract:The first aim of this paper is to construct a $13$-dimensional affine variety $\mathscr{H}_{\mathbb{A}}^{13}$ related with $\mathbb{P}^{2}\times\mathbb{P}^{2}$-fibration. It is well-known that the affine cone of the Segre embedded $\mathbb{P}^{2}\times\mathbb{P}^{2}$ is defined as the null loci of the so called $\sharp$-mapping of a 9-dimensional nondegenerate quadratic Jordan algebra $J$ of a cubic form. Inspired with this fact, we construct $\mathscr{H}_{\mathbb{A}}^{13}$ in the same way coordinatizing $J$ with 8 parameters. We derive such a coordinatization of $J$ using fixed three complementary primitive idempotents and the associated Peirce decomposition of $J$. The second aim of this paper is to construct complex prime $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano $3$-folds of anti-canonical codimension 4 as weighted complete intersections of appropriate weighted projectivizations of $\mathscr{H}_{\mathbb{A}}^{13}$ or its subvarieties (possibly allowing some coordinates with weight $0$). The affine variety $\mathscr{H}_{\mathbb{A}}^{13}$ and such weighted projectivizations of $\mathscr{H}_{\mathbb{A}}^{13}$ are called key varieties for prime $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano 3-folds. We show that a prime $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano 3-fold of genus $3$ with three $\frac{1}{2}(1,1,1)$-singularities belonging to the class of No.5.4 as in [Tak1] is constructed from one weighted projectivization of $\mathscr{H}_{\mathbb{A}}^{13}$ such that all the coordinates have positive weights. Conversely, we also show that any such a prime $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano 3-fold is obtained in this way. Moreover, relating $\mathscr{H}_{\mathbb{A}}^{13}$ with the $C_{2}$-cluster variety constructed by Coughlan and Ducat [CD1], we show that weighted projectivizations of $\mathscr{H}_{\mathbb{A}}^{13}$ or its subvarieties are key varieties for prime $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano 3-folds belonging to 108 classes in the online database [GRDB].

Abstract:In the previous papers [Tak8,Tak6], we construct the affine varieties $\Sigma_{\mathbb{A}}^{13}$ and $\Pi_{\mathbb{A}}^{14}$ whose partial projectivizations have $\mathbb{P}^{2}\times\mathbb{P}^{2}$-fibrations. In this paper, we produce prime $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano 3-folds of anticanonical codimension 4 belonging to 23 (resp. 8) classes of Graded Ring Database [GRDB] as weighted complete intersections of weighted projectivizations of $\Sigma_{\mathbb{A}}^{13}$ (resp. $\Pi_{\mathbb{A}}^{14}$ or the cone over it). Together with the results of [CD] and [Tak5], prime $\mathbb{Q}$-Fano 3-folds of anticanonical codimension 4 are constructed for 141 classes among the 143 classes in [GRDB].

Classifying Fano 4-folds with a rational fibration onto a 3-fold

Abstract:We study smooth, complex Fano 4-folds X with a rational contraction onto a 3-fold, namely a rational map X-->Y that factors as a sequence of flips X-->X' followed by a surjective morphism X'->Y with connected fibers, where Y is normal, projective, and dim Y=3. We show that if X has a rational contraction onto a 3-fold and X is not a product of del Pezzo surfaces, then the Picard number rho(X) of X is at most 9; this bound is sharp. As an application, we show that every Fano 4-fold X with rho(X)=12 is isomorphic to a product of surfaces, thus improving the result by the first named author that shows the same for rho(X)>12. We also give a classification result for Fano 4-folds X, not products of surfaces, having a "special" rational contraction X-->Y with dim Y=3, rho(X)-rho(Y)=2, and rho(X)>6; we show that there are only three possible families. Then we prove that the first family exists if rho(X)=7, and that the second family exists if and only if rho(X)=7. This provides the first examples of Fano 4-folds with rho(X)>6 different from products of del Pezzo surfaces and from the Fano models of the blow-up of P^4 in points. We also construct three new families with rho(X)=6. Finally we show that if a Fano 4-fold X has Lefschetz defect delta(X)=2, then rho(X) is at most 6; this bound is again sharp.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a partial affirmative answer to the BAB conjecture for $3$-folds in characteristic $p>5$. Specifically, we prove that a set $\mathcal{D}$ of weak Fano $3$-folds over an uncountable algebraically closed field is bounded, if each element $X \in \mathcal{D}$ satisfies certain conditions regarding the Gorenstein index, a complement and Kodaira type vanishing. In the course of the proof, we also study a uniform lower bound for Seshadri constants of nef and big invertible sheaves on projective $3$-folds.
