Abstract:In metric-affine gravity, both the gravitational and matter actions depend not just on the metric, but also on the independent affine connection. Thus matter can be modeled as a hyperfluid, characterized by both the energy-momentum and hypermomentum tensors. The latter is defined as the variation of the matter action with respect to the connection and it encodes extra (micro)properties of particles. For a homogeneous and isotropic universe, it was recently shown that the generic cosmological hypermomentum possesses five degrees of freedom: one in dilation, two in shear, and two in spin part. The aim of the current work is to present the first systematic study of the implications of this perfect hyperfluid on the universe with Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker metric. We adopt a simple model with non-Riemannian Einstein-Hilbert gravitational action plus arbitrary hyperfluid matter, and solve analytically the cosmological equations for single and multiple component hypermomentum contributions using different assumptions about the equation of state. It is remarkable, that in a number of cases the forms of the time evolution of the Hubble function and energy density still coincide with their general relativity counterparts, only the respective indexes $\mathrm{w}_{\mathrm{eff}}$ and $\mathrm{w}_\rho$ start to differ due to the hypermomentum corrections. The results and insights we obtained are very general and can assist in constructing interesting models to resolve the issues in standard cosmology.

Brown's Lagrangian for a relativistic perfect fluid is generalised by incorporating the degrees of freedom encoded in the hypermomentum tensor, namely by including connection-matter couplings. Quite interestingly, generic hyperfluids are imperfect, since hypermomentum induces such effects as bulk and shear viscosities as well as heat fluxes. The various coefficients that appear in the first order expansion of hydrodynamics can now be deduced from a Lagrangian formulation, given a geometrical interpretation and a suggested microscopic description in terms of hypermomentum. This connection between hypermomentum and dissipative fluids could shed new light on the physics of relativistic hydrodynamics. The applicability of the new formalism is demonstrated by exact cosmological solutions.

Abstract:Variational principle is the main approach to obtain complete and self-consistent field equations in gravitational theories. This method works well in pure field cases such as $f(R)$ and Horndeski gravities. However, debates exist in the literature over the modification of perfect fluid. This paper aims to clarify this issue. For a wide class of modified fluid Lagrangian, we show that the variational principle is unable to give complete field equations. One additional equation is required for completeness. Adopting the local energy conservation equation gives the modified fluid a good thermodynamic interpretation. Our result is the first modified fluid theory that can incorporate energy conservation. As an application of this framework, we propose a specific modified fluid model to realize early dark energy triggered by cosmic radiation-matter transition. This model naturally explains why early dark energy occurs around matter-radiation equality and is useful in erasing the Hubble tension.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to understanding a few characteristics of static irrotational matter content that assumes hyperbolical symmetry. For this purpose, we use metric f(R) gravity to carry out our analysis. It is noticed that the matter distribution cannot fill the region close to the center of symmetry, thereby implying the existence of an empty core. Moreover, the evaluation of the effective energy density reveals that it is inevitably negative, which could have utmost relevance in understanding various quantum field events. To derive the structure scalars, we perform the orthogonal splitting of the Riemann tensor in this modified gravity. Few relationships among matter variables and both Tolman and Misner Sharp are determined. Through two generating functions, some hyperbolically symmetric cosmological models, as well as their physical interpretations, are studied. To delve deeply into the role of f(R) terms, the model of the less-complex relativistic system of Einstein gravity is presented.

Fluid Models from Kinetic Models using a Geometric Averaging Procedure

Abstract:We interpret the Lorentz force equation as a geodesic equation associated with a non-linear connection. Using a geometric averaging procedure, we prove that for narrow and smooth one-particle distribution functions whose supports are invariant under the flow of the Lorentz equation, a bunch of charged point particles can be described by a charged cold fluid model in the ultra-relativistic regime. The method used to prove this result does not require additional hypotheses on the higher moments of the distribution. This is accomplished by estimating the expressions that include the differential operators appearing in the charged cold fluid model equation. Under the specified conditions of narrowness and ultra-relativistic dynamics, it turns out that these differential expressions are close to zero, justifying the use of the charged cold fluid model. The method presented in the work can also be applied to justify the use of warm plasmas and other models.

Abstract:We show that the model of superfluid dark matter developed in Refs. Khoury (Phys Rev D 91(2):024022, https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.91.024022 , arXiv:1409.0012 [hep-th], 2015 ), Berezhiani and Khoury (Phys Rev D 92:103510, https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevD.92.103510 , arXiv:1507.01019 [astro-ph.CO], 2015 ) and Berezhiani and Khoury (Phys Lett B 753:639, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.physletb.2015.12.054 , arXiv:1506.07877 [astro-ph.CO], 2016 ), which modifies the Newtonian potential and explains the galactic rotational curves, can be unitarized by the formation of classical configurations in the scattering amplitudes. The classicalization mechanism may also trigger the formation of the superfluid state from the early to the late Universe.

Abstract:Using a formalism that was recently developed in a companion Letter, we rigorously prove the equivalence, in the linear regime, of a number of apparently different relativistic hydrodynamic theories proposed in the literature. In particular, we show that Hydro+ is indistinguishable from the Israel-Stewart theory for bulk viscosity, which in turn is indistinguishable from a reacting mixture. The two-fluid model for superfluidity coincides with the Israel-Stewart theory for heat conduction in the limit of infinite conductivity, and this explains why the latter has a second sound. Also, MIS* is equivalent to the Burgers model for viscoelasticity, and this implies that the former must exhibit an elastic behavior at high frequencies. Additionally, we show that if the degrees of freedom and the conservation laws of a hydrodynamic theory have the same geometric character as those of the Israel-Stewart theory, then such theory must be indistinguishable from the Israel-Stewart theory in the linear regime. This explains why all second-order theories turn out to be identical near equilibrium. Abstract:We consider a relativistic two-fluid model of superfluidity, in which the superfluid is described by an order parameter that is a complex scalar field satisfying the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation (NLKG). The coupling to the normal fluid is introduced via a covariant current-current interaction, which results in the addition of an effective potential, whose imaginary part describes particle transfer between superfluid and normal fluid. Quantized vorticity arises in a class of singular solutions and the related vortex dynamics is incorporated in the modified NLKG, facilitating numerical analysis which is usually very complicated in the phenomenology of vortex filaments. The dual transformation to a string theory description (Kalb-Ramond) of quantum vorticity, the Magnus force and the mutual friction between quantized vortices and normal fluid are also studied.

Abstract:The elusive physical nature of Horndeski gravity is elucidated in a new approach depicting this class of theories as a dissipative effective fluid. Requiring the constitutive equations of the latter to be those of a Newtonian fluid restricts the theory to only two disconnected subclasses of "viable" Horndeski gravity. Therefore, a stress-energy tensor of Horndeski effective fluid, linear in the first derivatives of the fluid's 4-velocity, is a sufficient condition for gravitational waves to propagate at light speed. All other Horndeski theories correspond to exotic non-Newtonian effective fluids.

Abstract:It is easy to reason that gravity might be the effect of a fluid in disguise, as it will naturally arise in emergent gravity models where gravity is due to the effect of some fundamental particles, with the latter expected to behave collectively like a fluid at the macroscopic scale. We call this the fluid/gravity equivalence. The key difficulty with the fluid/gravity equivalence is to find the correct metric-fluid relation (the relation between the emergent metric and the fluid properties) so that the fluid not only has physically acceptable properties but also obeys the usual hydrodynamic equations, while at the same time the emergent metric also obeys the Einstein equations. Faced with the problem, we have previously made a tentative proposal of the metric-fluid relation, focusing only on obtaining physically acceptable predictions on the fluid properties. In this paper, however, we find that for the general gravitational wave spacetime near the null infinity, the underlying fluid not only has physically acceptable properties, but also satisfies the expected relativistic hydrodynamic equations in the Minkowski background, thus providing a concrete example satisfying both of the major requirements expected for the fluid/gravity equivalence.

Abstract:We study generic matter coupled to a D -dimensional supergravity using a formulation of double field theory (DFT), where all the fields are encoded in O(D,D) multiplets. We study both the case when the matter comes from a variational principle, as well as the case where the matter comes from a statistical or thermodynamic approach. For the latter, we construct the distribution function for the perfect fluid and its entropy current, which is a conserved quantity. We then include general viscous and elastic terms in the generalized energy-momentum tensor which, in the general case, lead to entropy production. We consistently deform the conservation law of the generalized entropy current and identify a particular nondissipative deformation. Quantum Fluid Dynamics on the Hypersphere

Abstract:It is known from quantum mechanics that particles are associated with wave functions, and that the probability of observing a particle at some future location is proportional to the squared modulus of the amplitude of its wave function. Although this statistical relationship is well quantified, the interpretations have remained controversial, with many split between the classical Copenhagen interpretation and some variation of the de Broglie-Bohm pilot wave models. Recent experiments with Hydrodynamic Quantum Analogs (HQAs) have demonstrated that droplets of real fluid may achieve stable dynamical states, where interaction of the droplets with their own ripples results in motion analogous to the motion of particles subject to the guiding equation under the pilot wave models. Indeed, many effects previously thought to be exclusively quantum have now been observed as emergent phenomena in these macroscopic HQAs. This has motivated us to explore the possibility that quantum mechanics may actually be the result of fluid dynamics on some real quantum scale fluid. In this paper, we show that if there is a real quantum scale fluid having dynamics analogous to the fluid in HQAs, then this fluid must be a superfluid, and the dynamics of that fluid must take place on the surface of a 4-dimensional hypersphere. Under the influence of cosmological inflation, we further show that these bouncing droplets would have the illusion of a property analogous to rest mass, and that the principles of inertia, momentum, mass-energy equivalence, general relativity, the uncertainty principle and the appearance of a time-like dimension can all be derived for droplets as purely emergent phenomena from the fluid dynamics of this system. As such, we believe that this model merits consideration as a potential foundation for a new unifying theory of physics at all scales.

Microscopic theory for hyperuniformity in two-dimensional chiral active fluid

Abstract:Some nonequilibrium systems exhibit anomalous suppression of the large-scale density fluctuations, so-called hyperuniformity. Recently, hyperuniformity was found numerically in a simple model of chiral active fluids [Q.-L. Lei et al., Sci. Adv. 5, eaau7423 (2019)]. We revisit this phenomenon and put forward a microscopic theory to explain it. An effective fluctuating hydrodynamic equation is derived for a simple particle model of chiral active matter. We show that the linear analysis of the obtained hydrodynamic equation captures hyperuniformity. Our theory yields hyperuniformity characterized by the same exponents as the numerical observation, but the agreement with the numerical data is qualitative. We also argue that the hydrodynamic equation for the effective particle representation, in which each rotating trajectory is regarded as an effective particle, has the same form as the macroscopic description of the random organization model with the center of mass conservation.

Abstract:Two formulations of superfluidity are reviewed: Landau's phenomenological two-fluid model and a relativistic effective field theory description. We demonstrate how the two-fluid formalism can be recovered from the nonrelativistic limit of the relativistic effective theory at finite temperatures. We show how self-gravitating, nonrelativistic superfluids are obtained from the Newtonian limit of the relativistic approach on curved spaces. The concepts are presented in an accessible manner for readers who may not be deeply familiar with superfluidity from a condensed matter perspective.

Abstract:The approach of extended irreversible thermodynamics consists of promoting the dissipative fluxes to non-equilibrium thermodynamic variables. In a relativistic context, this naturally leads to the formulation of the theory of Israel and Stewart (1979), which is, to date, one of the most successful theories for relativistic dissipation. Although the generality of the principle makes it applicable to any dissipative fluid, a connection of the Israel-Stewart theory with microphysics has been established, through kinetic theory, only for the case of ideal quantum gases. By performing a convenient change of variables, we provide, for the case of bulk viscosity, an equivalent reformulation of the equations at the basis of extended irreversible thermodynamics. This approach maps any thermodynamic process which contributes to the bulk viscosity into a set of chemical reactions, whose reaction coordinates are abstract parameters describing the displacement from local thermodynamic equilibrium of the fluid element. We apply our new formalism to the case of the relativistic fluids, showing that the Israel-Stewart model for bulk viscosity is just the second-order expansion of a minimal model belonging to a larger class of non-perturbative theories for bulk viscosity which include the nuclear-reaction-mediated bulk viscosity of neutron star matter as a particular case. Furthermore, we show with concrete examples that our formalism provides new ways of computing the bulk viscosity directly and defines a simple prescription for constructing the Israel-Stewart model for a generic bulk-viscous fluid.

Abstract:The success of relativistic hydrodynamics as an essential part of the phenomenological description of heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and the LHC has motivated a significant body of theoretical work concerning its fundamental aspects. Our review presents these developments from the perspective of the underlying microscopic physics, using the language of quantum field theory, relativistic kinetic theory, and holography. We discuss the gradient expansion, the phenomenon of hydrodynamization, as well as several models of hydrodynamic evolution equations, highlighting the interplay between collective long-lived and transient modes in relativistic matter. Our aim to provide a unified presentation of this vast subject -- which is naturally expressed in diverse mathematical languages -- has also led us to include several new results on the large-order behaviour of the hydrodynamic gradient~expansion.

Abstract:A model of a two-phase flow of compressible immiscible fluids is presented. Its derivation is based on the use of the theory of symmetric hyperbolic thermodynamically compatible systems. The model is an extension of the previously proposed thermodynamically compatible model of compressible two-phase flows due to the inclusion of new state variables of a medium associated with surface-tension forces. The governing equations of the model form a hyperbolic system of differential equations of the first order and satisfy the laws of thermodynamics (energy conservation and entropy increase). The properties of the model equations are studied, and it is shown that the Young–Laplace law of capillary pressure is fulfilled in the asymptotic approximation at the continuum level.
