Abstract:The study of topological band insulators has revealed fascinating phases characterized by band topology indices and anomalous boundary modes protected by global symmetries. In strongly correlated systems, where the traditional notion of electronic bands becomes obsolete, it has been established that the topological insulator phases persist as stable phases, separate from the trivial insulators. However, due to the inability to express the ground states of such systems as Slater determinants, the formulation of generic variational wavefunctions for numerical simulations is highly desirable. In this paper, we tackle this challenge for two-dimensional topological insulators by developing a comprehensive framework for fermionic tensor network states. Starting from simple assumptions, we obtain possible sets of tensor equations for any given symmetry group, capturing consistent relations governing symmetry transformation rules on tensor legs. We then examine the connections between these tensor equations and non-chiral topological insulators by construing edge theories and extracting quantum anomaly data from each set of tensor equations. By exhaustively exploring all possible sets of equations, we achieve a systematic classification of non-chiral topological insulator phases. Imposing the solutions of a given set of equations onto local tensors, we obtain generic variational wavefunctions for corresponding topological insulator phases. Our methodology provides an important step towards simulating topological insulators in strongly correlated systems. We discuss the limitations and potential generalizations of our results, paving the way for further advancements in this field.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to construct the variational wave function of two - dimensional non - chiral topological insulators in strongly correlated systems. Specifically, the paper focuses on how to develop a comprehensive framework to deal with fermionic tensor network states, thereby providing an effective method for numerical simulation. In strongly correlated systems, the traditional concept of electron energy bands is no longer applicable, so new methods are required to describe and classify the topological insulator phases of these systems. ### Main problems of the paper 1. **Construction of variational wave function**: - The paper proposes a method of using fermionic tensor network states (FPEPS) to construct the variational wave function of two - dimensional non - chiral topological insulators. This method can capture complex quantum entanglement patterns, which are crucial for describing topological phases. 2. **Symmetry constraints**: - By assuming the form of symmetry on the internal legs, the paper derives different tensor equation systems. These equation systems describe the symmetry transformation rules and are of great significance for understanding and classifying topological insulator phases. 3. **Extraction of edge theory**: - The paper also explores how to extract the edge Hilbert space and the anomalous edge symmetry action from the tensor equations, which helps to understand the boundary behavior of topological insulators. ### Main contributions - **Systematic classification**: By exhausting all possible tensor equation systems, the paper achieves a systematic classification of non - chiral topological insulator phases. - **Construction of variational space**: By solving specific tensor equation systems, the paper constructs variational spaces corresponding to different topological insulator phases. - **Specific implementation of edge theory**: The paper provides a specific method for extracting the edge Hilbert space and the anomalous edge symmetry action from the tensor equations, further validating the proposed classification scheme. ### Technical details - **Derivation of tensor equations**: The paper derives a set of tensor equations by assuming simple symmetry forms, and these equations describe the symmetry transformation rules. - **FPEPS representation**: The paper details how to represent the fixed - point wave function as FPEPS and shows how to obtain the physical wave function by contracting all internal legs. - **Symmetry action**: By analyzing the symmetry action on the internal legs, the paper proposes specific tensor equations that can describe the role of symmetry in the tensor network. ### Application prospects - **Numerical simulation**: The method provided by the paper provides an effective tool for the numerical simulation of topological insulator phases in strongly correlated systems. - **Theoretical research**: By systematically classifying and constructing variational wave functions, the paper provides a new theoretical framework for understanding topological phases in strongly correlated systems. In summary, this paper aims to solve the problem of constructing variational wave functions of two - dimensional non - chiral topological insulators in strongly correlated systems by developing the method of fermionic tensor network states, and provides a new approach for systematic classification and numerical simulation.
