Abstract:The fifth-order KP II equation $$ \partial_t u + \alpha \partial_x^3 u + \beta \partial_x^5 u + u \partial_x u + \partial_x^{-1} \partial_y^2u=0$$ ($\beta<0$, $\alpha>0$) is a nonlinear dispersive equation that models long dispersive waves in two space dimensions. We prove that solutions of the fifth-order KP II equation scatter to solutions of the corresponding linear equation $$ \partial_t v + \alpha\partial_x^3 v + \beta\partial_x^5 v + \partial_x^{-1} \partial_y^2 v = 0$$ for small data. Our proof uses builds on Hadac, Herr, and Koch's work (see <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0708.2011" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0708.2011">arXiv:0708.2011</a>) on the third-order KP II equation.
Analysis of PDEs
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper aims to address the issue of scattering for solutions to the fifth-order Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II (KP II) equation, which is a nonlinear dispersive partial differential equation. Specifically, the authors investigate the behavior of solutions to this equation as \( t \rightarrow \pm\infty \). ### Key Points: 1. **Equation Formulation:** - The fifth-order KP II equation under consideration is given by: \[ \partial_t u + \alpha \partial_x^3 u + \beta \partial_x^5 u + u \partial_x u + \partial_x^{-1} \partial_y^2 u = 0, \] with initial condition \( u(0,x,y) = u_0(x,y) \). - The parameters satisfy \( \beta < 0 \) and \( \alpha > 0 \), and \( \beta \) is set to \( -1 \) throughout the paper. 2. **Scattering Problem:** - The authors aim to prove that solutions to the fifth-order KP II equation with small initial data scatter as \( t \rightarrow \pm\infty \) to solutions of the linear problem. - They prove the existence of scattering asymptotes and establish continuity and analyticity of the wave operators. 3. **Function Spaces and Analysis:** - The analysis involves using specific function spaces such as \( \dot{Y}_s \) and \( \dot{Z}_s \) which are modifications of \( V_2^S \) and \( U_2^S \) adapted to functions with low regularity. - These spaces allow the authors to analyze the bilinear map associated with the equation and extend it by density to a bounded bilinear map. 4. **Main Results:** - The main theorem proves that
