Abstract:This article presents an extended algorithm for computing the lower spectral radius of finite, non-negative matrix sets. Given a set of matrices $\mathcal{F} = \{A_1, \ldots, A_m\}$, the lower spectral radius represents the minimal growth rate of sequences in the product semigroup generated by $\mathcal{F}$. This quantity is crucial for characterizing optimal stable trajectories in discrete dynamical systems of the form $x_{k+1} = A_{i_k} x_k$, where $A_{i_k} \in \mathcal{F}$ for all $k \ge 0$. For the well-known joint spectral radius (which represents the highest growth rate), a famous algorithm providing suitable lower and upper bounds and able to approximate the joint spectral radius with arbitrary accuracy was proposed by Gripenberg in 1996. For the lower spectral radius, where a lower bound is not directly available (contrarily to the joint spectral radius), this computation appears more challenging. Our work extends Gripenberg's approach to the lower spectral radius computation for non-negative matrix families. The proposed algorithm employs a time-varying antinorm and demonstrates rapid convergence. Its success is related to the property that the lower spectral radius can be obtained as a Gelfand limit, which was recently proved in Guglielmi and Zennaro (2020). Additionally, we propose an improvement to the classical Gripenberg algorithm for approximating the joint spectral radius of arbitrary matrix sets.

Hybrid Localized Spectral Decomposition for multiscale problems

Abstract:We consider a finite element method for elliptic equation with heterogeneous and possibly high-contrast coefficients based on primal hybrid formulation. A space decomposition as in FETI and BDCC allows a sequential computations of the unknowns through elliptic problems and satisfies equilibrium constraints. One of the resulting problems is non-local but with exponentially decaying solutions, enabling a practical scheme where the basis functions have an extended, but still local, support. We obtain quasi-optimal a priori error estimates for low-contrast problems assuming minimal regularity of the solutions. To also consider the high-contrast case, we propose a variant of our method, enriching the space solution via local eigenvalue problems and obtaining optimal a priori error estimate that mitigates the effect of having coefficients with different magnitudes and again assuming no regularity of the solution. The technique developed is dimensional independent and easy to extend to other problems such as elasticity.

A Riemann--Hilbert approach to computing the inverse spectral map for measures supported on disjoint intervals

Abstract:We develop a numerical method for computing with orthogonal polynomials that are orthogonal on multiple, disjoint intervals for which analytical formulae are currently unknown. Our approach exploits the Fokas--Its--Kitaev Riemann--Hilbert representation of the orthogonal polynomials to produce an $\mathrm{O}(N)$ method to compute the first $N$ recurrence coefficients. The method can also be used for pointwise evaluation of the polynomials and their Cauchy transforms throughout the complex plane. The method encodes the singularity behavior of weight functions using weighted Cauchy integrals of Chebyshev polynomials. This greatly improves the efficiency of the method, outperforming other available techniques. We demonstrate the fast convergence of our method and present applications to integrable systems and approximation theory.

Abstract:Large-scale networks arise in many applications. It is often of interest to be able to identify the most important nodes of a network or to ascertain the ease of traveling between nodes. These and related quantities can be determined by evaluating expressions of the form $\mathbf{u}^Tf(A)\mathbf{w}$, where $A$ is the adjacency matrix that represents the graph of the network, $f$ is a nonlinear function, such as the exponential function, and $\mathbf{u}$ and $\mathbf{w}$ are vectors, for instance, axis vectors. This paper describes a novel technique for determining upper and lower bounds for expressions $\mathbf{u}^Tf(A)\mathbf{w}$ when $A$ is symmetric and bounds for many vectors $\mathbf{u}$ and $\mathbf{w}$ are desired. The bounds are computed by first evaluating a low-rank approximation of $A$, which is used to determine rough bounds for the desired quantities for all nodes. These rough bounds indicate for which vectors $\mathbf{u}$ and $\mathbf{w}$ more accurate bounds should be computed with the aid of Gauss-type quadrature rules. This hybrid approach is cheaper than only using Gauss-type rules to determine accurate upper and lower bounds in the common situation when it is not known a priori for which vectors $\mathbf{u}$ and $\mathbf{w}$ accurate bounds for $\mathbf{u}^Tf(A)\mathbf{w}$ should be computed. Several computed examples, including an application to software engineering, illustrate the performance of the hybrid method.

Abstract:The harmonic Arnoldi method can be used to compute some eigenpairs of a large matrix, and it is more suitable for finding interior eigenpairs. However, the harmonic Ritz vectors obtained by the method may converge erratically and may even fail to converge, so that resulting algorithms may not perform well. To improve convergence, a refined harmonic Arnoldi method is proposed that replaces the harmonic Ritz vectors by certain refined eigenvector approximations. The implicit restart technique advocated by Sorensen is applied to the refined harmonic Arnoldi method and an implicitly restarted refined harmonic Arnoldi algorithm (IRRHA) is presented. For the refined algorithm a new shift scheme, called refined shifts, is proposed that is shown to be better than the exact shifts scheme used in literature. The refined shifts can be computed reliably and cheaply. Extensive numerical experiments are made on real world problems, and comparisons are drawn on IRRHA and the implicitly restarted harmonic Arnoldi algorithm (IRHA) of Morgan as well as the implicitly restarted Arnoldi algorithm (IRA) of Sorensen and the implicitly restarted refined Arnoldi algorithm (IRRA) of Jia. They indicate that the refined algorithms outperform their standard counterparts considerably. Furthermore, for exterior eigenvalue problems IRRA is preferable and more powerful, and for interior eigenvalue problems IRRHA is more attractive and can be much more efficient.
Finite Integrals from Feynman Polytopes

Abstract:We investigate a geometric approach to determining the complete set of numerators giving rise to finite Feynman integrals. Our approach proceeds graph by graph, and makes use of the Newton polytope associated to the integral's Symanzik polynomials. It relies on a theorem by Berkesch, Forsgård, and Passare on the convergence of Euler--Mellin integrals, which include Feynman integrals. We conjecture that a necessary in addition to a sufficient condition is that all parameter-space monomials lie in the interior of the polytope. We present an algorithm for finding all finite numerators based on this conjecture. In a variety of examples, we find agreement between the results obtained using the geometric approach, and a Landau-analysis approach developed by Gambuti, Tancredi, and two of the authors.

Abstract:In deterministic global optimization, techniques for linear relaxation of a non-convex program are used in the lower bound calculation phase. To achieve this phase, most deterministic global optimization codes use reformulation-linearization techniques. However, there exist also two interval-based polyhedral relaxation techniques which produce reliable bounds without adding new auxiliary variables, and which can take into account mathematical operations and most transcendental functions: (i) the affine relaxation technique, used in the IBBA code, based on affine forms and affine arithmetic, and (ii) the extremal Taylor technique, used in the Ibex-Opt code, which is based on a specific interval-based Taylor form. In this paper, we describe how these two interval-based linear relaxation techniques can be hybridized. These two approaches appear to be complementary, and such a hybrid method performs well on a representative sample of constrained global optimization instances.

Abstract:The distribution of the eigenvalues of a Hermitian matrix (or of a Hermitian matrix pencil) reveals important features of the underlying problem, whether a Hamiltonian system in physics, or a social network in behavioral sciences. However, computing all the eigenvalues explicitly is prohibitively expensive for real-world applications. This paper presents two types of methods to efficiently estimate the spectral density of a matrix pencil $(A, B)$ when both $A$ and $B$ are Hermitian and, in addition, $B$ is positive definite. The first one is based on the Kernel Polynomial Method (KPM) and the second on Gaussian quadrature by the Lanczos procedure. By employing Chebyshev polynomial approximation techniques, we can avoid direct factorizations in both methods, making the resulting algorithms suitable for large matrices. Under some assumptions, we prove bounds that suggest that the Lanczos method converges twice as fast as the KPM method. Numerical examples further indicate that the Lanczos method can provide more accurate spectral densities when the eigenvalue distribution is highly non-uniform. As an application, we show how to use the computed spectral density to partition the spectrum into intervals that contain roughly the same number of eigenvalues. This procedure, which makes it possible to compute the spectrum by parts, is a key ingredient in the new breed of eigensolvers that exploit "spectrum slicing".

Unified framework for Fiedler-like strong linearizations of polynomial and rational matrices

Abstract:Linearization is a widely used method for solving polynomial eigenvalue problems (PEPs) and rational eigenvalue problem (REPs) in which the PEP/REP is transformed to a generalized eigenproblem and then solve this generalized eigenproblem with algorithms available in the literature. Fiedler-like pencils (Fiedler pencils (FPs), generalized Fiedler pencils (GFPs), Fiedler pencils with repetition (FPRs) and generalized Fiedler pencils with repetition (GFPRs)) are well known classes of strong linearizations. GFPs are an intriguing family of linearizations, and GF pencils are the fundamental building blocks of FPRs and GFPRs. As a result, FPRs and GFPRs have distinctive features and they provide structure-preserving linearizations for structured matrix polynomials. But GFPRs do not use the full potential of GF pencils. Indeed, not all the GFPs are FPRs or GFPRs, and vice versa. The main aim of this paper is two-fold. First, to build a unified framework for all the Fiedler-like pencils FPs, GFPs, FPRs and GFPRs. To that end, we construct a new family of strong linearizations (named as EGFPs) of a matrix polynomial $P(\lam)$ that subsumes all the Fiedler-like linearizations. A salient feature of the EGFPs family is that it allows the construction of structured preserving banded linearizations with low bandwidth for structured (symmetric, Hermitian, palindromic) matrix polynomial. Low bandwidth structured linearizations may be useful for numerical computations. Second, to utilize EGFPs directly to form a family of Rosenbrock strong linearizations of an $n \times n$ rational matrix $G(\lam)$ associated with a realization. We describe the formulas for the construction of low bandwidth linearizations for $P(\lam)$ and $G(\lam)$. We show that the eigenvectors, minimal bases/indices of $P(\lam)$ and $G(\lam)$ can be easily recovered from those of the linearizations of $P(\lam)$ and $G(\lam)$.

Abstract:We discuss the possibility of using multiple shift invert Lanczos and contour integral based spectral projection method to compute a relatively large number of eigenvalues of a large sparse and symmetric matrix on distributed memory parallel computers. The key to achieving high parallel efficiency in this type of computation is to divide the spectrum into several intervals in a way that leads to optimal use of computational resources. We discuss strategies for dividing the spectrum. Our strategies make use of an eigenvalue distribution profile that can be estimated through inertial counts and cubic spline fitting. Parallel sparse direct methods are used in both approaches. We use a simple cost model that describes the cost of computing k eigenvalues within a single interval in terms of the asymptotic cost of sparse matrix factorization and triangular substitutions. Several computational experiments are performed to demonstrate the effect of different spectrum division strategies on the overall performance of both multiple shift invert Lanczos and the contour integral based method. We also show the parallel scalability of both approaches in the strong and weak scaling sense. In addition, we compare the performance of multiple shift invert Lanczos and the contour integral based spectral projection method on a set of problems from density functional theory (DFT). A Refined Harmonic Lanczos Bidiagonalization Method and an Implicitly Restarted Algorithm for Computing the Smallest Singular Triplets of Large Matrices

Abstract:The harmonic Lanczos bidiagonalization method can be used to compute the smallest singular triplets of a large matrix $A$. We prove that for good enough projection subspaces harmonic Ritz values converge if the columns of $A$ are strongly linearly independent. On the other hand, harmonic Ritz values may miss some desired singular values when the columns of $A$ are almost linearly dependent. Furthermore, harmonic Ritz vectors may converge irregularly and may even fail to converge. Based on the refined projection principle for large matrix eigenproblems due to the first author, we propose a refined harmonic Lanczos bidiagonalization method that takes the Rayleigh quotients of the harmonic Ritz vectors as approximate singular values and extracts the best approximate singular vectors, called the refined harmonic Ritz approximations, from the given subspaces in the sense of residual minimizations. The refined approximations are shown to converge to the desired singular vectors once the subspaces are sufficiently good and the Rayleigh quotients converge. An implicitly restarted refined harmonic Lanczos bidiagonalization algorithm (IRRHLB) is developed. We study how to select the best possible shifts, and suggest refined harmonic shifts that are theoretically better than the harmonic shifts used within the implicitly restarted harmonic Lanczos bidiagonalization algorithm (IRHLB). We propose a novel procedure that can numerically compute the refined harmonic shifts efficiently and accurately. Numerical experiments are reported that compare IRRHLB with five other algorithms based on the Lanczos bidiagonalization process. It appears that IRRHLB is at least competitive with them and can be considerably more efficient when computing the smallest singular triplets.

Existence of this measure implies the following two results: 1) any two-dimensional subspace of the Schatten-$p$ class is isometric to a subspace of $L_{p}$, and 2) if $f : \mathbb{R} \to \mathbb{R}$ has non-negative $k$th derivative and $A$ and $B$ are Hermitian matrices with $A$ positive semidefinite, then $t \mapsto \mathrm{tr}~f(t A + B)$ has non-negative $k$th derivative. We also give an explicit expression for the measure $\mu_{A, B}$.

On a Hierarchy of Spectral Invariants for Graphs

Abstract:We consider a hierarchy of graph invariants that naturally extends the spectral invariants defined by Fürer (Lin. Alg. Appl. 2010) based on the angles formed by the set of standard basis vectors and their projections onto eigenspaces of the adjacency matrix. We provide a purely combinatorial characterization of this hierarchy in terms of the walk counts. This allows us to give a complete answer to Fürer's question about the strength of his invariants in distinguishing non-isomorphic graphs in comparison to the 2-dimensional Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm, extending the recent work of Rattan and Seppelt (SODA 2023). As another application of the characterization, we prove that almost all graphs are determined up to isomorphism in terms of the spectrum and the angles, which is of interest in view of the long-standing open problem whether almost all graphs are determined by their eigenvalues alone. Finally, we describe the exact relationship between the hierarchy and the Weisfeiler-Leman algorithms for small dimensions, as also some other important spectral characteristics of a graph such as the generalized and the main spectra.

Abstract:This paper deals with a hybrid joint diagonalization (JD) problem considering both Hermitian and transpose congruences. Such problem can be encountered in certain non-circular signal analysis applications including blind source separation. We introduce new Jacobi-like algorithms using Givens or a combination of Givens and hyperbolic rotations. These algorithms are compared with state-of-the-art methods and their performance gain, especially in the high dimensional case, is assessed through simulation experiments including examples related to blind separation of non-circular sources.

Abstract:This paper develops a new mathematical framework for studying the subspace-segmentation problem. We examine some important algebraic properties of subspace arrangements that are closely related to the subspace-segmentation problem. More specifically, we introduce an important class of invariants given by the Hilbert functions. We show that there exist rich relations between subspace arrangements and their corresponding Hilbert functions. We propose a new subspace-segmentation algorithm, and showcase two applications to demonstrate how the new theoretical revelation may solve subspace segmentation and model selection problems under less restrictive conditions with improved results.

Abstract:The goal is to show how to treat singular matrices via kernel detection so that any robust direct sparse solver for non-singular matrices may be used. This technique applied in the Hybrid total FETI method enables us to process large coarse problems, for which the classical FETI method fails. Efficiency of the algorithms is illustrated in our ESPRESO library for problems with billions of unknowns.

Abstract:In the convergence analysis of numerical methods for solving partial differential equations (such as finite element methods) one arrives at certain generalized eigenvalue problems, whose maximal eigenvalues need to be estimated as accurately as possible. We apply symbolic computation methods to the situation of square elements and are able to improve the previously known upper bound, given in “p- and hp-finite element methods” (Schwab, 1998), by a factor of 8. More precisely, we try to evaluate the corresponding determinant using the holonomic ansatz, which is a powerful tool for dealing with determinants, proposed by Zeilberger in 2007. However, it turns out that this method does not succeed on the problem at hand. As a solution we present a variation of the original holonomic ansatz that is applicable to a larger class of determinants, including the one we are dealing with here. We obtain an explicit closed form for the determinant, whose special form enables us to derive new and tight upper resp. lower bounds on the maximal eigenvalue, as well as its asymptotic behaviour.

Abstract:The rational function approximation provides a natural and interpretable representation of response functions such as the many-body spectral functions. We apply the Vector Fitting (VFIT) algorithm to fit a variety of spectral functions calculated from the Holstein model of electron-phonon interactions. We show that the resulting rational functions are highly efficient in their fitting of sharp features in the spectral functions, and could provide a means to infer physically relevant information from a spectral dataset. The position of the peaks in the approximated spectral function are determined by the location of poles in the complex plane. In addition, we developed an enhanced version of VFIT by introducing a regularization parameter that is slowly annealed to zero. With this new procedure, we demonstrate it is possible to achieve accurate spectral function fits that vary smoothly as a function of physical conditions.

Gershgorin-Type Spectral Inclusions for Matrices

Abstract:In this paper we derive families of Gershgorin-type inclusion sets for the spectra and pseudospectra of finite matrices. In common with previous generalisations of the classical Gershgorin bound for the spectrum, our inclusion sets are based on a block decomposition. In contrast to previous generalisations that treat the matrix as a perturbation of a block-diagonal submatrix, our arguments treat the matrix as a perturbation of a block-tridiagonal matrix, which can lead to sharp spectral bounds, as we show for the example of large Toeplitz matrices. Our inclusion sets, which take the form of unions of pseudospectra of square or rectangular submatrices, build on our own recent work on inclusion sets for bi-infinite matrices [Chandler-Wilde, Chonchaiya, Lindner, {\em J. Spectr. Theory} {\bf 14}, 719--804 (2024)].

Potential Hessian Ascent: The Sherrington-Kirkpatrick Model

Abstract:We present the first iterative spectral algorithm to find near-optimal solutions for a random quadratic objective over the discrete hypercube, resolving a conjecture of Subag [Subag, Communications on Pure and Applied Mathematics, 74(5), 2021]. The algorithm is a randomized Hessian ascent in the solid cube, with the objective modified by subtracting an instance-independent potential function [Chen et al., Communications on Pure and Applied Mathematics, 76(7), 2023]. Using tools from free probability theory, we construct an approximate projector into the top eigenspaces of the Hessian, which serves as the covariance matrix for the random increments. With high probability, the iterates' empirical distribution approximates the solution to the primal version of the Auffinger-Chen SDE [Auffinger et al., Communications in Mathematical Physics, 335, 2015]. The per-iterate change in the modified objective is bounded via a Taylor expansion, where the derivatives are controlled through Gaussian concentration bounds and smoothness properties of a semiconcave regularization of the Fenchel-Legendre dual to the Parisi PDE. These results lay the groundwork for (possibly) demonstrating low-degree sum-of-squares certificates over high-entropy step distributions for a relaxed version of the Parisi formula [Open Question 1.8, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2401.14383" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2401.14383">arXiv:2401.14383</a>].
