Abstract:We define parabolic quasi-Coxeter elements in well generated complex reflection groups. We characterize them in multiple natural ways, and we study two combinatorial objects associated with them: the collections $\operatorname{Red}_W(g)$ of reduced reflection factorizations of $g$ and $\operatorname{RGS}(W,g)$ of the relative generating sets of $g$. We compute the cardinalities of these sets for large families of parabolic quasi-Coxeter elements and, in particular, we relate the size $\#\operatorname{Red}_W(g)$ with geometric invariants of Frobenius manifolds. This paper is second in a series of three; we will rely on many of its results in part III to prove uniform formulas that enumerate full reflection factorizations of parabolic quasi-Coxeter elements, generalizing the genus-$0$ Hurwitz numbers.

Abstract:We are extending results from \cite{B-Hurwitz} by building a parallel theory of simple Hurwitz numbers for the reflection groups $G(m,1,n)$. We also study analogs of the cut-and-join operators. An algebraic description as well as a description in terms of ramified covering of Hurwitz numbers is provided. An explicit formula for them in terms of Schur polynomials are provided. In addition the generating function of $G(m,1,n)$-Hurwitz numbers is shown to give rise to $m$ independent variables $\tau$-function of the KP hierarchy. Finally we provide an ELSV-formula type for these new Hurwitz numbers.

Abstract:We show that in the complex reflection group $G_6$, reflection factorizations of a Coxeter element that have the same length and multiset of conjugacy classes are in the same Hurwitz orbit. This confirms one case of a conjecture of Lewis and Reiner.

Abstract:We use the Atiyah-Bott-Segal-Singer Lefschetz fixed point formula to calculate the Hirzebruch ?y genus Xy(S[n]), where S[n] is the Hilbert scheme of points of length n of a surface S. Combinatorial interpretation of the weights of the fixed points of the natural torus action on ( 2)[n] is used. This is the first step to prove a conjectural formula about the elliptic genus of the Hilbert schemes.

Abstract:We prove that the Hurwitz action on reflection factorizations of Coxeter elements is transitive up to certain natural constraints in the complex reflection groups G4 and G5. This affirms a more general conjecture by Lewis and Reiner in these specific cases. The proof uses induction on length of the factorization using the fact that the square of a reflection is also a reflection.

Abstract:In this paper, we count factorizations of Coxeter elements in well-generated complex reflection groups into products of reflections. We obtain a simple product formula for the exponential generating function of such factorizations, which is expressed uniformly in terms of natural parameters of the group. In the case of factorizations of minimal length, we recover a formula due to P. Deligne, J. Tits and D. Zagier in the real case and to D. Bessis in the complex case. For the symmetric group, our formula specializes to a formula of D. M. Jackson.

Tropical twisted Hurwitz numbers for elliptic curves

Abstract:Hurwitz numbers enumerate branched morphisms between Riemann surfaces. For a fixed elliptic target, Hurwitz numbers are intimately related to mirror symmetry following work of Dijkgraaf. In recent work of Chapuy and Dolega a new variant of Hurwitz numbers with fixed genus $0$ target was introduced that includes maps between between non-orientiable surfaces. These numbers are called $b$-Hurwitz numbers and are polynomials in a parameter $b$ which measures the non-orientability of the involved maps. An interpretation in terms of factorisations of $b$-Hurwitz numbers for $b=1$, so-called twisted Hurwitz numbers, was found in work of Burman and Fesler. In previous work, the authors derived a tropical geometry interpretation of these numbers. In this paper, we introduce a natural generalisation of twisted Hurwitz numbers with elliptic targets within the framework of symmetric groups. We derive a tropical interpretation of these invariants, relate them to Feynman integrals and derive an expression as a matrix element of an operator in the bosonic Fock space.

Abstract:For well-generated complex reflection groups, Chapuy and Stump gave a simple product for a generating function counting reflection factorizations of a Coxeter element by their length. This is refined here to record the number of reflections used from each orbit of hyperplanes. The proof is case-by-case via the classification of well-generated groups. It implies a new expression for the Coxeter number, expressed via data coming from a hyperplane orbit; a case-free proof of this due to J. Michel is included.

Abstract:We study the Hurwitz action of the classical braid group on factorisations of a Coxeter element c in a well-generated complex reflection group W. It is well-known that the Hurwitz action is transitive on the set of reduced decompositions of c in reflections. Our main result is a similar property for the primitive factorisations of c, i.e. factorisations with only one factor which is not a reflection. The motivation is the search for a geometric proof of Chapoton's formula for the number of chains of given length in the non-crossing partitions lattice NCP_W. Our proof uses the properties of the Lyashko-Looijenga covering and the geometry of the discriminant of W.

Hurwitz numbers with completed cycles and Gromov--Witten theory relative to at most three points

Abstract:Hurwitz numbers with completed cycles are standard Hurwitz numbers with simple branch points replaced by completed cycles. In fact, simple branch points correspond to completed $2$-cycles. Okounkov and Pandharipande have established the remarkable GW/H correspondence, saying that the stationary sectors of the Gromov--Witten theory relative to $r$ points equal Hurwitz numbers with $r$ branch points besides the completed cycles. However, from the viewpoint of computation, known results for Hurwitz numbers (standard or with completed cycles) are mainly for $r\leq 2$. It is hard to obtain explicit formulas and then discuss the structural properties for the cases $r>2$. In this paper, we obtain explicit formulas for the case $r=3$ and uncover a number of structural properties of these Hurwitz numbers. For instance, we discover a piecewise polynomiality with respect to the orders of the completed cycles in addition to the parts of the profiles of branch points as usual, we show that certain hook-shape Hurwitz numbers are building blocks of all our Hurwitz numbers, and we prove an analogue of the celebrated $\lambda_g$-conjecture.

The structure of Hurwitz numbers with fixed ramification profile and varying genus

Abstract:In 1891, Hurwitz introduced the enumeration of genus $g$, degree $d$, branched covers of the Riemann sphere with simple ramification over prescribed points and no branching elsewhere. He showed that for fixed degree $d$, the enumeration possesses a remarkable structure. More precisely, it can be expressed as a linear combination of exponentials $m^{2g-2+2d}$, where $m$ ranges over the integers from $1$ to $\binom{d}{2}$. In this paper, we generalise this structural result to Hurwitz numbers that enumerate branched covers which also have a prescribed ramification profile over one point. Our proof fundamentally uses the infinite wedge space, in particular the connected correlators of products of $\mathcal{E}$-operators. The recent study of Hurwitz numbers has often focussed on their structure with fixed genus and varying ramification profile. Our main result is orthogonal to this, allowing for the explicit calculation and the asymptotic analysis of Hurwitz numbers in large genus. We pose the broad question of which other enumerative problems exhibit analogous structure. We prove that orbifold Hurwitz numbers can also be expressed as a linear combination of exponentials and conjecture that monotone Hurwitz numbers share a similar structure, but with the inclusion of an additional linear term.

Abstract:In a finite real reflection group, two factorizations of a Coxeter element into an arbitrary number of reflections are shown to lie in the same orbit under the Hurwitz action if and only if they use the same multiset of conjugacy classes. The proof makes use of a surprising lemma, derived from a classification of the minimal linear dependences (matroid circuits) in finite root systems: any set of roots forming a minimal linear dependence with positive coefficients has a disconnected graph of pairwise acuteness.

Stirling numbers for complex reflection groups

Abstract:In an earlier paper, we defined and studied q-analogues of the Stirling numbers of both types for the Coxeter group of type B. In the present work, we show how this approach can be extended to all irreducible complex reflection groups G. The Stirling numbers of the first and second kind are defined via the Whitney numbers of the first and second kind, respectively, of the intersection lattice of G. For the groups G(m,p,n), these numbers and polynomials can be given combinatorial interpretations in terms of various statistics. The ordered version of ths q-Stirling numbers of the second kind also show up in conjectured Hilbert series for certain super coinvariant algebras.
