Abstract:We construct a family of elliptic surfaces with $p_g=q=1$ that arise from base change of the Hesse pencil. We identify explicitly a component of the higher Noether-Lefschetz locus with positive Mordell-Weil rank, and a particular surface having maximal Picard number and defined over $\mathbb Q$. These examples satisfy the infinitesimal Torelli theorem, providing a second proof of the dominance of period map, which was first obtained by Engel-Greer-Ward. A third proof is provided using the Shioda modular surface associated with $\Gamma_0(11)$. Finally, we find birational models for the degenerations at the boundary of the one-dimensional Noether-Lefschetz locus, and extend the period map at those limit points.

Abstract:We show that the pure mapping class group $\mathcal{N}_{g}^{k}$ of a non-orientable closed surface of genus $g\geqslant 2$ with $k\geqslant 1$ marked points has $p$-periodic cohomology for each odd prime $p$ for which $\mathcal{N}_{g}^{k}$ has $p$-torsion. Using the Yagita invariant and the cohomology classes obtained by the representation of subgroups of order $p$, we obtain that the $p$-period is less than or equal to $4$ when $g\geqslant 3$ and $k\geqslant 1$. Moreover, combining the Nielsen realization theorem and a characterization of the $p$-period given in terms of normalizers and centralizers of cyclic subgroups of order $p$, we show that the $p$-period of $\mathcal{N}_{g}^{k}$ is bounded below by $4$, whenever $\mathcal{N}_{g}^{k}$ has $p$-periodic cohomology, $g\geqslant 3$ and $k\geqslant 0$. These results provide partial answers to questions proposed by G. Hope and U. Tillmann.

Abstract:For $g\geq 2$, let $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$ be the mapping class group of the closed orientable surface $S_g$ of genus $g$. In this paper, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions under which a given pseudo-periodic mapping class can be a root of another up to conjugacy. Using this characterization, the canonical decomposition of (non-periodic) mapping classes, and some known algorithms, we give an algorithm for determining the conjugacy classes of roots of arbitrary mapping classes. Furthermore, we derive realizable bounds on the degrees of roots of pseudo-periodic mapping classes in $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$, the Torelli group, the level-$m$ subgroup of $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$, and the commutator subgroup of $\mathrm{Mod}(S_2)$. In particular, we show that the highest possible (realizable) degree of a root of a pseudo-periodic mapping class $F$ is $3q(F)(g+1)(g+2)$, where $q(F)$ is a unique positive integer associated with the conjugacy class of $F$. Moreover, this bound is realized by a root of a power of a Dehn twist about a separating curve of genus $[g/2]$ in $S_g$, where $g\equiv 0,9 \pmod{12}$. Finally, for $g\geq 3$, we show that any pseudo-periodic mapping class having a nontrivial periodic component that is not the hyperelliptic involution, normally generates $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$. Consequently, we establish that $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$ is normally generated by a root of bounding pair map or a root of a nontrivial power of a Dehn twist.

Abstract:We study an integer sequence associated with Cantor's division polynomials of a genus $2$ curve having an integral point. We show that the modulo $p$ of such a sequence is periodic for all but finitely many primes $p$, and describe the relation between the period of the modulo $p$ of the sequence and the order of the integral point on the reduction modulo $p$ in the Jacobian variety explicitly. This generalizes Ward's results on elliptic divisibility sequences associated with division polynomials of elliptic curves.

Quotients of the mapping class group by power subgroups

Abstract:We study the quotient of the mapping class group $\operatorname{Mod}_g^n$ of a surface of genus $g$ with $n$ punctures, by the subgroup $\operatorname{Mod}_g^n[p]$ generated by the $p$-th powers of Dehn twists. Our first main result is that $\operatorname{Mod}_g^1 /\operatorname{Mod}_g^1[p]$ contains an infinite normal subgroup of infinite index, and in particular is not commensurable to a higher-rank lattice, for all but finitely many explicit values of $p$. Next, we prove that $\operatorname{Mod}_g^0/ \operatorname{Mod}_g^0[p]$ contains a Kähler subgroup of finite index, for every $p\ge 2$ coprime with six. Finally, we observe that the existence of finite-index subgroups of $\operatorname{Mod}_g^0$ with infinite abelianization is equivalent to the analogous problem for $\operatorname{Mod}_g^0/ \operatorname{Mod}_g^0[p]$.

For each prime ideal p of good reduction, let m_p(F,P) be the size of the F-orbit of the reduction of P modulo p. Fix any e > 0. Abstract:Let $E$ be an elliptic curve with $j$-invariant $0$ or $1728$ and let $\widetilde{E}$ be a $k^{th}$ twist of $E$. We show that for any prime $p$ of good reduction of $\widetilde{E}$, a degree $k$ relative $p$-class group and the root number of $\widetilde{E}$ determines the dimension of the $p$-Selmer group of $\widetilde{E}$. As a consequence, we construct families of large rank $p$-class group. We also relate congruent number and cube sum problem with relative $p$-class group.

Abstract:We study arithmetic properties of certain quaternionic periods of Hilbert modular forms arising from base change of elliptic modular forms. These periods which we call the distinguished periods are closely related to the notion of distinguished representation that appear in work of Harder--Langlands--Rapoport, Lai, Flicker--Hakim on the Tate conjectures for the Hilbert--Blumenthal surfaces and their quaternionic analogues. In particular, we prove an integrality result on the ratio of the distinguished period and the quaternionic Peterson norm associated to the modular form. Our method is based on an Euler system argument initiated by Flach by producing elements in the motivic cohomologies of the quaternionic Hilbert--Blumenthal surfaces with control of their ramification behaviours. We show that these periods give natural bounds for certain subspaces of the Selmer groups of these quaternionic Hilbert--Blumenthal surfaces. The lengths of these subspaces can be determined by using the Taylor--Wiles method and can be related to the quaternionic Peterson norms of the modular forms.

Abstract:We study the growth of the Galois invariants of the $p$-Selmer group of an elliptic curve in a degree $p$ Galois extension. We show that this growth is determined by certain local cohomology groups and determine necessary and sufficient conditions for these groups to be trivial. Under certain hypotheses this allows us to give necessary and sufficient conditions for there to be growth in the full $p$-Selmer group in a degree $p$ Galois extension.

Abstract:Let $L_d$ be the Lattès map associated to the multiplication-by-$d$ endomorphism of an elliptic curve $E$ defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. We determine the density $\delta(L_d,q)$ of periodic points for $L_d$ in $\mathbb{P}^1(\mathbb{F}_q)$. We show that the periodic point densities $\delta(L_d,q^n)$ converge as $n \rightarrow \infty$ along certain arithmetic progressions, and compute simple explicit formulas for $\delta(L_\ell,q)$ when $\ell$ is a prime and $E$ belongs to a special family of supersingular elliptic curves.

Abstract:We show that, for each $n>0$, there is a family of elliptic surfaces which are covered by the square of a curve of genus $2n+1$, and whose Hodge structures have an action by ${\mathbb Q}(\sqrt{-n})$. By considering the case $n=3$, we show that one particular family of K3 surfaces are covered by the square of genus $7$. Using this, we construct a correspondence between the square of a curve of genus $7$ and a general K3 surface in ${\mathbb P}^4$ with $15$ ordinary double points up to isogeny. This gives an explicit proof of the Kuga-Satake-Deligne correspondence for these K3 surfaces and any K3 surfaces isogenous to them, and further, a proof of the Hodge conjecture for the squares of these surfaces. We conclude that the motives of these surfaces are Kimura-finite. Our analysis gives a birational equivalence between a moduli space of curves with additional data and the moduli space of these K3 surfaces with a specific elliptic fibration.

Abstract:Under relatively mild and natural conditions, we establish an integral period relations for the (real or imaginary) quadratic base change of an elliptic cusp form. This answers a conjecture of Hida regarding the {\it congruence number} controlling the congruences between this base change and other eigenforms which are not base change. As a corollary, we establish the Bloch-Kato conjecture for adjoint modular Galois representations twisted by an even quadratic character. In the odd case, we formulate a conjecture linking the degree two topological period attached to the base change Bianchi modular form, the cotangent complex of the corresponding Hecke algebra and the archimedean regulator attached to some Beilinson-Flach element.

On the classification of product-quotient surfaces with $q=0$, $p_g=3$ and their canonical map

Abstract:In this work we present new results to produce an algorithm that returns, for any fixed pair of natural integers $K^2$ and $\chi$, all regular surfaces $S$ of general type with self-intersection $K_S^2=K^2$ and Euler characteristic $\chi(\mathcal O_S)=\chi$, that are product-quotient surfaces. The key result we obtain is an algebraic characterization of all families of regular product-quotients surfaces, up to isomorphism, arising from a pair of $G$-coverings of $\mathbb P^1$. As a consequence of our work, we provide a classification of all regular product-quotient surfaces of general type with $23\leq K^2\leq 32$ and $\chi(\mathcal O_S)=4$. Furthermore, we study their canonical map and present several new examples of surfaces of general type with a high degree of the canonical map.

Mod-$p$ Galois representations not arising from abelian varieties

Abstract:It is known that any Galois representation $\rho : G_{\mathbb{Q}} \rightarrow \mathrm{GL}(2,\mathbb{F}_p)$ with determinant equal to the mod-$p$ cyclotomic character, arises from the $p$-torsion of an elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$, if and only if $p \leq 5$. In dimension $g = 2$, when $p \le 3$, it is again known that any Galois representation valued in $\mathrm{GSp}(4,\mathbb{F}_p)$ with cyclotomic similitude character arises from an abelian surface. In this paper, we study this question for all primes $p$ and dimensions $g \ge 2$. When $g \ge 2$ and $(g,p) \neq (2,2)$, $(2,3)$, $(3,2)$, we prove the existence of a Galois representation over $\mathbb{Q}$ valued in $\mathrm{GSp}(2g,\mathbb{F}_p)$ with cyclotomic similitude character, that cannot arise as the $p$-torsion representation of any $g$-dimensional abelian variety over $\mathbb{Q}$.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{F}_g$ be the family of monic odd-degree hyperelliptic curves of genus $g$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. Poonen and Stoll have shown that for every $g \geq 3$, a positive proportion of curves in $\mathcal{F}_g$ have no rational points except the point at infinity. In this note, we prove the analogue for quadratic points: for each $g\geq 4$, a positive proportion of curves in $\mathcal{F}_g$ have no points defined over quadratic extensions except those that arise by pulling back rational points from $\mathbb{P}^1$.

Abstract:The main result is that the punctured mapping class group Γgi (i≥1, g≥1) has periodic cohomology; furthermore, the period is always 2. We present a proof which involves the Yagita invariant and the Chern class of the representation of a subgroup in Γgi (i≥1, g≥1). Using the main result, we can calculate the p-torsion of the Farrell cohomology for some special values of g and i. To do this, we extend the definition of the fixed point data as well as the conjugation theorem known for the case Γg0 to the case Γgi (i≥1, g≥1).
On the prime Selmer ranks of cyclic prime twist families of elliptic curves over global function fields

Abstract:Fix a prime number $p$. Let $\mathbb{F}_q$ be a finite field of characteristic coprime to 2, 3, and $p$, which also contains the primitive $p$-th root of unity $\mu_p$. Based on the works by Swinnerton-Dyer and Klagsbrun, Mazur, and Rubin, we prove that the probability distribution of the sizes of prime Selmer groups over a family of cyclic prime twists of non-isotrivial elliptic curves over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ satisfying a number of mild constraints conforms to the distribution conjectured by Bhargava, Kane, Lenstra, Poonen, and Rains with explicit error bounds. The key tools used in proving these results are the Riemann hypothesis over global function fields, the Erdös-Kac theorem, and the geometric ergodicity of Markov chains.
