Abstract:In this paper we prove a conjecture by Wocjan, Elphick and Anekstein (2018) which upper bounds the sum of the squares of the positive (or negative) eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix of a graph by an expression that behaves monotonically in terms of the vector chromatic number. One of our lemmas is a strengthening of the Cauchy-Schwarz inequality for Hermitian matrices when one of the matrices is positive semidefinite. A related conjecture due to Bollobás and Nikiforov (2007) replaces the vector chromatic number by the clique number and sums over the first two eigenvalues only. We prove a version of this conjecture with weaker constants. An important consequence of our work is a proof that for any fixed $r$, computing a rank $r$ optimum solution to the vector chromatic number semidefinite programming is NP-hard. We also present a vertex weighted version of some of our results, and we show how it leads quite naturally to the known vertex-weighted version of the Motzkin-Straus quadratic optimization formulation for the clique number.

Chromatic numbers of Cayley graphs of abelian groups: A matrix method

Abstract:In this paper, we take a modest first step towards a systematic study of chromatic numbers of Cayley graphs on abelian groups. We lose little when we consider these graphs only when they are connected and of finite degree. As in the work of Heuberger and others, in such cases the graph can be represented by an $m\times r$ integer matrix, where we call $m$ the dimension and $r$ the rank. Adding or subtracting rows produces a graph homomorphism to a graph with a matrix of smaller dimension, thereby giving an upper bound on the chromatic number of the original graph. In this article we develop the foundations of this method. In a series of follow-up articles using this method, we completely determine the chromatic number in cases with small dimension and rank; prove a generalization of Zhu's theorem on the chromatic number of $6$-valent integer distance graphs; and provide an alternate proof of Payan's theorem that a cube-like graph cannot have chromatic number 3.

Abstract:A connected Cayley graph on an abelian group with a finite generating set $S$ can be represented by its Heuberger matrix, i.e., an integer matrix whose columns generate the group of relations between members of $S$. In a companion article, the authors lay the foundation for the use of Heuberger matrices to study chromatic numbers of abelian Cayley graphs. We call the number of rows in the Heuberger matrix the dimension, and the number of columns the rank. In this paper, we give precise numerical conditions that completely determine the chromatic number in all cases with dimension $1$; with rank $1$; and with dimension $\leq 3$ and rank $\leq 2$. For such a graph without loops, we show that it is $4$-colorable if and only if it does not contain a $5$-clique, and it is $3$-colorable if and only if it contains neither a diamond lanyard nor a $C_{13}(1,5)$, both of which we define herein. In a separate companion article, we show that we recover Zhu's theorem on the chromatic number of $6$-valent integer distance graphs as a special case of our theorem for dimension $3$ and rank $2$.

Abstract:For a graph with largest normalized Laplacian eigenvalue $\lambda_N$ and (vertex) coloring number $\chi$, it is known that $\lambda_N\geq \chi/(\chi-1)$. Here we prove properties of graphs for which this bound is sharp, and we study the multiplicity of $\chi/(\chi-1)$. We then describe a family of graphs with largest eigenvalue $\chi/(\chi-1)$. We also study the spectrum of the $1$-sum of two graphs (also known as graph joining or coalescing), with a focus on the maximal eigenvalue. Finally, we give upper bounds on $\lambda_N$ in terms of $\chi$.

Chromatic symmetric functions via the group algebra of $S_n$

Abstract:We prove some Schur positivity results for the chromatic symmetric function $X_G$ of a (hyper)graph $G$, using connections to the group algebra of the symmetric group. The first such connection works for (hyper)forests $F$: we describe the Schur coefficients of $X_F$ in terms of eigenvalues of a product of Hermitian idempotents in the group algebra, one factor for each edge (a more general formula of similar shape holds for all chordal graphs). Our main application of this technique is to prove a conjecture of Taylor on the Schur positivity of certain $X_F$, which implies Schur positivity of the formal group laws associated to various combinatorial generating functions. We also introduce the pointed chromatic symmetric function $X_{G,v}$ associated to a rooted graph $(G,v)$. We prove that if $X_{G,v}$ and $X_{H,w}$ are positive in the generalized Schur basis of Strahov, then the chromatic symmetric function of the wedge sum of $(G,v)$ and $(H,w)$ is Schur positive.

Abstract:A lower bound for the second smallest eigenvalue (SSE) of the unweighted Laplacian for an N-vertex directed rooted graph is obtained by obtaining the supremum of the scrambling constant of the (N - 1)-th power of the corresponding adjacency matrix. This supremum is actually achieved by the "N-layer Complete Graph" (NCG) defined in this paper, which implies that for directed rooted graphs that is unweighted for its directed edges, NCGs have the least connective topology in the sense of scrambling constant.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph with $n$ non-isolated vertices and $m$ edges. The positive / negative square energies of $G$, denoted $s^+(G)$ / $s^-(G)$, are defined as the sum of squares of the positive / negative eigenvalues of the adjacency matrix $A_G$ of $G$. In this work, we provide several new tools for studying square energy encompassing semi-definite optimization, graph operations, and surplus. Using our tools, we prove the following results on the extremal values of $s^{\pm}(G)$ with a given number of vertices and edges. 1. We have $\min(s^+(G), s^-(G)) \geq n - \gamma \geq \frac{n}{2}$, where $\gamma$ is the domination number of $G$. This verifies a conjecture of Elphick, Farber, Goldberg and Wocjan up to a constant, and proves a weaker version of this conjecture introduced by Elphick and Linz. 2. We have $s^+(G) \geq m^{6/7 - o(1)}$ and $s^-(G) = \Omega(m^{1/2})$, with both exponents being optimal.

Abstract:We show that w.h.p the chromatic number $\chi$ of the square of $G_{n,p},p=c/n$ is asymptotically equal to the maximum degree $\Delta(G_{n,p})$. This improves an earlier result of Garapaty et al \cite{KLMP} who proved that $\chi(G^2_{n,p})=\Theta \left(\Delta(G_{n,p})\right)$.

Abstract:We provide a formula for every Schur coefficient in the chromatic symmetric function of a graph in terms of special rim hook tabloids. This formula is useful in confirming the non-Schur positivity of the chromatic symmetric function of a graph, especially when Stanley's stable partition method does not work. As applications, we determine Schur positive fan graphs and Schur positive complete tripartite graphs. We show that any squid graph obtained by adding $n$ leaves to a common vertex on an $m$-vertex cycle is not Schur positive if $m\ne 2n-1$, and conjecture that neither are the squid graphs with $m=2n-1$.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper we consider those graphs that have maximum degree at least 1/ k times their order, where k is a (small) positive integer. A result of Hajnal and Szemerédi concerning equitable vertex‐colorings and an adaptation of the standard proof of Vizing's Theorem are used to show that if the maximum degree of a graph G satisfies Δ( G ) ≥ | V ( G )/ k , then X ″( G ) ≤ Δ( G ) + 2 k + 1. This upper bound is an improvement on the currently available upper bounds for dense graphs having large order.

Abstract:We expand the chromatic symmetric functions for Dyck paths of bounce number three in the elementary symmetric function basis using a combinatorial interpretation of the inverse of the Kostka matrix studied in Eğecioğlu-Remmel (1990). We prove that certain coefficients in this expansion are positive. We establish the $e$-positivity of an extended class of chromatic symmetric functions for Dyck paths of bounce number three beyond the "hook-shape" case of Cho-Huh (2019).

Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph, and let $\lambda(G)$ denote the smallest eigenvalue of $G$. First, we provide an upper bound for $\lambda(G)$ based on induced bipartite subgraphs of $G$. Consequently, we extract two other upper bounds, one relying on the average degrees of induced bipartite subgraphs and a more explicit one in terms of the chromatic number and the independence number of $G$. In particular, motivated by our bounds, we introduce two graph invariants that are of interest on their own. Finally, special attention goes to the investigation of the sharpness of our bounds in various classes of graphs as well as the comparison with an existing well-known upper bound.

Abstract:The cochromatic number $\zeta(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest number of colors in a vertex-coloring of $G$ such that every color class forms an independent set or a clique. In three papers written around 1990, Erdős, Gimbel and collaborators raised several open problems regarding the relationship of the chromatic and cochromatic number of a graph. In this short note, we address several of these problems, in particular -we disprove a conjecture of Erdős, Gimbel and Straight from 1988, -answer negatively a problem posed by Erdős and Gimbel in 1993, and -give positive evidence for a 1000\$--question of Erdős and Gimbel.

Odd-Sum Colorings of Planar Graphs

Abstract:A \emph{coloring} of a graph $G$ is a map $f:V(G)\to \mathbb{Z}^+$ such that $f(v)\ne f(w)$ for all $vw\in E(G)$. A coloring $f$ is an \emph{odd-sum} coloring if $\sum_{w\in N[v]}f(w)$ is odd, for each vertex $v\in V(G)$. The \emph{odd-sum chromatic number} of a graph $G$, denoted $\chi_{os}(G)$, is the minimum number of colors used (that is, the minimum size of the range) in an odd-sum coloring of $G$. Caro, Petruševski, and Škrekovski showed, among other results, that $\chi_{os}(G)$ is well-defined for every finite graph $G$ and, in fact, $\chi_{os}(G)\le 2\chi(G)$. Thus, $\chi_{os}(G)\le 8$ for every planar graph $G$ (by the 4 Color Theorem), $\chi_{os}(G)\le 6$ for every triangle-free planar graph $G$ (by Grötzsch's Theorem), and $\chi_{os}(G)\le 4$ for every bipartite graph. Caro et al. asked, for every even $\Delta\ge 4$, whether there exists $g_{\Delta}$ such that if $G$ is planar with maximum degree $\Delta$ and girth at least $g_{\Delta}$ then $\chi_{os}(G)\le 5$. They also asked, for every even $\Delta\ge 4$, whether there exists $g_{\Delta}$ such that if $G$ is planar and bipartite with maximum degree $\Delta$ and girth at least $g_{\Delta}$ then $\chi_{os}(G)\le 3$. We answer both questions negatively. We also refute a conjecture they made, resolve one further problem they posed, and make progress on another.

Abstract:Let $G$ be the unit distance graph in the plane. A well-known problem in combinatorial geometry is that of determining the chromatic number of $G$. It is known that $4\le \chi(G)\le 7$. The upper bound of 7 is obtained using tilings of the plane. The present paper studies two problems where we seek proper colourings of $G$, adding restrictions inspired by tilings: Let $H(\epsilon)$ be the graph whose vertices are the points of ${\mathbb R}^2$, with an edge between two points if their distance lies in the interval $[1,1+\epsilon]$. We show that for small $\epsilon$, $0<\epsilon\le \frac{3\sqrt{2}}{4}-1$, we have $6\le \chi(H(\epsilon))\le 7$. This improves the result of Exoo and Grytczuk et al. that $5\le \chi(H(\epsilon))$ for small $\epsilon$. Suppose that $G$ is properly coloured, but so that two solidly coloured regions meet along a straight line in some neighbourhood. Then at least 5 colours must be used.
Spectral Applications of Vertex-Clique Incidence Matrices Associated with a Graph

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a useful interaction between the theory of clique partitions, edge clique covers of a graph, and the spectra of graphs. Using a clique partition and an edge clique cover of a graph we introduce the notion of a vertex-clique incidence matrix for a graph and produce new lower bounds for the negative eigenvalues and negative inertia of a graph. Moreover, utilizing these vertex-clique incidence matrices, we generalize several notions such as the signless Laplacian matrix, and develop bounds on the incidence energy and the signless Laplacian energy of the graph. %The tight upper bounds for the energies of a graph and its line graph are given. More generally, we also consider the set $S(G)$ of all real-valued symmetric matrices whose off-diagonal entries are nonzero precisely when the corresponding vertices of the graph are adjacent. An important parameter in this setting is $q(G)$, and is defined to be the minimum number of distinct eigenvalues over all matrices in $S(G)$. For a given graph $G$ the concept of a vertex-clique incidence matrix associated with an edge clique cover is applied to establish several classes of graphs with $q(G)=2$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph of order $n$ with eigenvalues $\lambda_1 \geq \cdots \geq\lambda_n$. Let \[s^+(G)=\sum_{\lambda_i>0} \lambda_i^2, \qquad s^-(G)=\sum_{\lambda_i<0} \lambda_i^2.\] The smaller value, $s(G)=\min\{s^+(G), s^-(G)\}$ is called the \emph{square energy} of $G$. In 2016, Elphick, Farber, Goldberg and Wocjan conjectured that for every connected graph $G$ of order $n$, $s(G)\geq n-1.$ No linear bound for $s(G)$ in terms of $n$ is known. Let $H_1, \ldots, H_k$ be disjoint vertex-induced subgraphs of $G$. In this note, we prove that \[s^+(G)\geq\sum_{i=1}^{k} s^+(H_i) \quad \text{ and } \quad s^-(G)\geq\sum_{i=1}^{k} s^-(H_i),\] which implies that $s(G)\geq \frac{3n}{4}$ for every connected graph $G$ of order $n\ge 4$.

Abstract:The cochromatic number $\zeta(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the minimum number of colours needed for a vertex colouring where every colour class is either an independent set or a clique. Let $\chi(G)$ denote the usual chromatic number. Around 1991 Erdős and Gimbel asked: For the random graph $G \sim G_{n, 1/2}$, does $\chi(G)-\zeta(G) \rightarrow \infty$ whp? Erdős offered \$100 for a positive and \$1,000 for a negative answer. We give a positive answer to this question for roughly 95% of all values $n$.

Subchromatic numbers of powers of graphs with excluded minors

Abstract:A $k$-subcolouring of a graph $G$ is a function $f:V(G) \to \{0,\ldots,k-1\}$ such that the set of vertices coloured $i$ induce a disjoint union of cliques. The subchromatic number, $\chi_{\textrm{sub}}(G)$, is the minimum $k$ such that $G$ admits a $k$-subcolouring. Nešetřil, Ossona de Mendez, Pilipczuk, and Zhu (2020), recently raised the problem of finding tight upper bounds for $\chi_{\textrm{sub}}(G^2)$ when $G$ is planar. We show that $\chi_{\textrm{sub}}(G^2)\le 43$ when $G$ is planar, improving their bound of 135. We give even better bounds when the planar graph $G$ has larger girth. Moreover, we show that $\chi_{\textrm{sub}}(G^{3})\le 95$, improving the previous bound of 364. For these we adapt some recent techniques of Almulhim and Kierstead (2022), while also extending the decompositions of triangulated planar graphs of Van den Heuvel, Ossona de Mendez, Quiroz, Rabinovich and Siebertz (2017), to planar graphs of arbitrary girth. Note that these decompositions are the precursors of the graph product structure theorem of planar graphs. We give improved bounds for $\chi_{\textrm{sub}}(G^p)$ for all $p$, whenever $G$ has bounded treewidth, bounded simple treewidth, bounded genus, or excludes a clique or biclique as a minor. For this we introduce a family of parameters which form a gradation between the strong and the weak colouring numbers. We give upper bounds for these parameters for graphs coming from such classes. Finally, we give a 2-approximation algorithm for the subchromatic number of graphs coming from any fixed class with bounded layered cliquewidth. In particular, this implies a 2-approximation algorithm for the subchromatic number of powers $G^p$ of graphs coming from any fixed class with bounded layered treewidth (such as the class of planar graphs). This algorithm works even if the power $p$ and the graph $G$ is unknown.
