Abstract:This work deals with the presence of localized structures in relativistic systems described by two real scalar fields in two-dimensional spacetime. We consider the usual two-field model with the inclusion of the cuscuton term, which couples the fields regardless the potential. First we follow the steps of previous work to show that the system supports a first-order framework, allowing us to obtain the energy of solutions without knowing their explicit form. The cuscuton term brings versatility into the first-order equations, which gives rise to interesting modifications in the profiles of topological configurations, such as the smooth control over their slope and the internal structure of the energy density.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to study the existence and properties of local structures (especially kinks) in a two - real - scalar - field model in two - dimensional spacetime. Specifically, the paper introduces the cuscuton term, which is a non - standard coupling term that affects the dynamics of the fields without introducing the time - derivative terms of the fields. Through this setup, the author aims to explore the following points:
1. **Existence of kink solutions**: The paper first proves that the system supports a first - order framework, which means that the energy of the solutions can be obtained without knowing the specific form of the solutions. This provides a basis for further research on these solutions.
2. **Properties of kink solutions**: By introducing the cuscuton term, the author shows how to control the slope and smoothness of the kink solutions. This includes the modification of the internal structure of the energy density, so that the slope of the solutions and the internal structure of the energy density can be adjusted more flexibly.
3. **Influence of multiple scalar fields**: Different from the single - scalar - field model, the cuscuton term in the multi - scalar - field model affects the equations of motion but does not introduce second - derivative terms. This leads to new dynamical behaviors, especially in the case of static solutions.
4. **Extension of the model**: The paper also explores how to extend the model by choosing different functions \( f(\chi) \) to obtain analytical solutions with different behaviors. This includes Type I, Type II and Type III models, each of which shows different characteristics of kink solutions.
### Main contributions
- **Establishment of the first - order framework**: By introducing the smoothing functions \( P(\phi) \) and \( Q(\chi) \), the author constructs first - order equations, simplifies the solution - finding process, and directly obtains the energy expression.
- **Analytical form of kink solutions**: For different types of choices of \( f(\chi) \), the paper gives specific analytical solutions, showing the behavior changes of the solutions under different parameters.
- **Analysis of energy density**: The contributions to the energy density are analyzed in detail, especially the behaviors of \( \rho_1(x) \) and \( \rho_2(x) \), revealing the characteristics of energy distribution under different parameters.
### Future research directions
- **Research on asymmetric configurations**: Explore other models that may lead to asymmetric kink configurations.
- **Application in gravitational fields**: Study the behavior of this model in a five - dimensional braneworld scenario, considering a single extra dimension.
- **Support for vortex solutions**: Extend to relativistic field theories that support vortex solutions, in which complex scalar fields are coupled with gauge fields under the action of local U(1) gauge symmetry.
In summary, by introducing the cuscuton term, this paper deeply studies the existence and properties of kink solutions in the two - scalar - field model, providing a new perspective for understanding topological defects in complex scalar - field models.
