Abstract:We investigate the qualitative properties of the weak solutions to the boundary value problems for the hyperbolic fourth-order linear equations with constant coefficients in the plane bounded domain convex with respect to characteristics. The main question is to prove the analogue of maximum principle, solvability and uniqueness results for the weak solutions of initial and boundary value problems in the case of weak regularities of initial data from $L^2.$

Abstract:We show a strong maximum principle and an Alexandrov-Bakelman-Pucci estimate for the weak solutions of a Cauchy problem featuring Caputo time-derivatives and non-local operators in space variables given in terms of Bernstein functions of the Laplacian. To achieve this, first we propose a suitable meaning of a weak solution, show their existence and uniqueness, and establish a probabilistic representation in terms of time-changed Brownian motion. As an application, we also discuss an inverse source problem.

Abstract:In dimension two or three, the weak maximum principal for biharmonic equation is valid in any bounded Lipschitz domains. In higher dimensions (greater than three), it was only known that the weak maximum principle holds in convex domains or $C^1$ domains, and may fail in general Lipschitz domains. In this paper, we prove the weak maximum principle in higher dimensions in quasiconvex Lipschitz domains, which is a sharp condition in some sense and recovers both convex and $C^1$ domains.

Abstract:The classical heat equation is incompatible with relativity, since the strong maximum principle allows for disturbances to propagate instantaneously. Some authors have proposed limiting the propagation speed by adding a linear hyperbolic correction term, but then even a weak maximum principle fails to hold. We study a more recently introduced relativistic heat equation, which replaces the Laplace operator by a quasilinear elliptic operator, and show that strong and weak maximum principles hold for stationary and time-varying solutions, respectively, as well as for sub- and supersolutions. Moreover, by transforming the equation into an equivalent form, related to the mean curvature operator, we prove even stronger tangency and comparison principles.

Abstract:The weak maximum principle of finite element methods for parabolic equations is proved for both semi-discretization in space and fully discrete methods with $k$-step backward differentiation formulae for $k = 1,... ,6$, on a two-dimensional general polygonal domain or a three-dimensional convex polyhedral domain. The semi-discrete result is established via a dyadic decomposition argument and local energy estimates in which the nonsmoothness of the domain can be handled. The fully discrete result for multistep backward differentiation formulae is proved by utilizing the solution representation via the discrete Laplace transform and the resolvent estimates, which are inspired by the analysis of convolutional quadrature for parabolic and fractional-order partial differential equations.

Abstract:In this paper we are concerned with the maximum principle for quasi-linear backward stochastic partial differential equations (BSPDEs for short) of parabolic type. We first prove the existence and uniqueness of the weak solution to quasi-linear BSPDEs with the null Dirichlet condition on the lateral boundary. Then using the De Giorgi iteration scheme, we establish the maximum estimates and the global maximum principle for quasi-linear BSPDEs. To study the local regularity of weak solutions, we also prove a local maximum principle for the backward stochastic parabolic De Giorgi class.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the strong maximum principle for generalized solutions of Monge-Ampère type equations. We prove that the strong maximum principle holds at points where the function is strictly convex but not necessarily $C^{1,1}$ smooth, and show that it fails at non-strictly convex points. The results we obtain can be applied to various Minkowski type problems in convex geometry by the virtue of the Gauss image map.

In general, to ensure the validity of these kind of principles one has to consider some additional assumptions on the ambient manifold or on the differential operator. The present work aims to address, using both of these approaches, the problem of proving Maximum Principles for second order, elliptic operators acting on unbounded Riemannian domains under Dirichlet boundary conditions. Hence there is a natural division of this article in two distinct and standalone sections.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider equations involving a uniformly elliptic nonlocal operator where the function is uniformly bounded and radial decreasing. We establish some maximum principles for in bounded and unbounded domains. Since there is no decay condition in the unbounded domain, we make use of an approximate method to estimate the singular integral to get the maximum principle. As applications of these principles, by carrying out the method of moving planes, we give the monotonicity of solutions to the semilinear equation in the coercive epigraph, which extends the result of Dipierro‐Soave‐Valdinoci [Math. Ann.2017, 369(3‐4): 1283–1326]. Moreover, we obtain the radial symmetry and monotonicity of solutions to the generalized Schrödinger equation in a weaker condition, which is the improvement of the result of Tang [Math. Methods Appl. Sci. 2017, 40(7): 2596–2609]. In addition, the maximum principle also plays an important role in acquiring monotonicity of solutions and a Liouville theorem.

Abstract:We consider time-fractional parabolic equations with a Caputo time derivative of order $\alpha\in(0,1)$. For such equations, we give an elementary proof of the weak maximum principle under no assumptions on the sign of the reaction coefficient. This proof is also extended for weak solutions, as well as for various types of boundary conditions and variable-coefficient variable-order multiterm time-fractional parabolic equations.

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with the following fractional -Laplacian equations with the Hardy potential: where . Under some mild conditions on the nonlinearity , we establish the monotonicity and symmetry of positive solutions to the nonlinear equations involving the fractional -Laplacian with the Hardy potential in bounded domains. Moreover, we also prove a maximum principle along a sequence of approximate maximum points in unbounded domains. Our results are extensions of Chen and Li [4] and Dai, Liu and Wang [16].

Abstract:We consider maximum principles and related estimates for linear second order elliptic partial differential operators in n-dimensional Euclidean space, which improve previous results, with H-J Kuo, through sharp Lp dependence on the drift coefficient b. As in our previous work, the ellipticity is determined through the principal coefficient matrix A lying in sub-cones of the positive cone, which are dual cones of the Garding k-cones. Our main results are maximum principles for bounded domains, which extend those of Aleksandrov in the case k = n, together with extensions to unbounded domains, depending on appropriate integral norms of A, and corresponding local maximum principles. We also consider applications to local estimates in the uniformly elliptic case, including extensions of the Krylov-Safonov Holder and Harnack estimates.

Abstract:Bernoulli's free boundary problem is an overdetermined problem in which one seeks an annular domain such that the capacitary potential satisfies an extra boundary condition. There exist two different types of solutions called elliptic and hyperbolic solutions. Elliptic solutions are ``stable'' solutions and tractable by variational methods and maximum principles, while hyperbolic solutions are ``unstable'' solutions of which the qualitative behavior is less known. We introduce a new implicit function theorem based on the parabolic maximal regularity, which is applicable to problems with loss of derivatives. Clarifying the spectral structure of the corresponding linearized operator by harmonic analysis, we prove the existence of foliated hyperbolic solutions as well as elliptic solutions in the same regularity class.

Abstract:In this paper, we study equations involving fully nonlinear nonlocal operators F-alpha (u(x)) = C-n,C-alpha P.V. integral(Rn) G(u(x) - u(z))/vertical bar x - z vertical bar(n+alpha) dz = f(u(x)), x is an element of R-n. We shall establish a maximum principle for anti-symmetric functions on any half space, and obtain key ingredients for proving the symmetry and monotonicity for positive solutions to the fully nonlinear nonlocal equations. Especially, a Liouville theorem is derived, which will be useful in carrying out the method of moving planes on unbounded domains for a variety of problems with fully nonlinear nonlocal operators.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider equations involving fully nonlinear non-local operators F_α(u(x)) ≡ C_n,α PV ∫ _ℝ^nG(u(x)-u(z))/|x-z|^n+α dz= f(x,u). We prove a maximum principle and obtain key ingredients for carrying on the method of moving planes, such as narrow region principle and decay at infinity . Then we establish radial symmetry and monotonicity for positive solutions to Dirichlet problems associated to such fully nonlinear fractional order equations in a unit ball and in the whole space, as well as non-existence of solutions on a half space. We believe that the methods developed here can be applied to a variety of problems involving fully nonlinear nonlocal operators. We also investigate the limit of this operator as α→2 and show that F_α(u(x)) →a(-△ u(x)) + b |▽u(x)|^2.

Abstract:We consider the Cauchy problem for strictly hyperbolic $m$-th order partial differential equations with coefficients low-regular in time and smooth in space. It is well-known that the problem is $L^2$ well-posed in the case of Lipschitz continuous coefficients in time, $H^s$ well-posed in the case of Log-Lipschitz continuous coefficients in time (with an, in general, finite loss of derivatives) and Gevrey well-posed in the case of Hölder continuous coefficients in time (with an, in general, infinite loss of derivatives). Here, we use moduli of continuity to describe the regularity of the coefficients with respect to time, weight sequences for the characterization of their regularity with respect to space and weight functions to define the solution spaces. We establish sufficient conditions for the well-posedness of the Cauchy problem, that link the modulus of continuity and the weight sequence of the coefficients to the weight function of the solution space. The well-known results for Lipschitz, Log-Lipschitz and Hölder coefficients are recovered.

Weak discrete maximum principle of isoparametric finite element methods in curvilinear polyhedra

Abstract:The weak maximum principle of the isoparametric finite element method is proved for the Poisson equation under the Dirichlet boundary condition in a (possibly concave) curvilinear polyhedral domain with edge openings smaller than $\pi$, which include smooth domains and smooth deformations of convex polyhedra. The proof relies on the analysis of a dual elliptic problem with a discontinuous coefficient matrix arising from the isoparametric finite elements. Therefore, the standard $H^2$ elliptic regularity which is required in the proof of the weak maximum principle in the literature does not hold for this dual problem. To overcome this difficulty, we have decomposed the solution into a smooth part and a nonsmooth part, and estimated the two parts by $H^2$ and $W^{1,p}$ estimates, respectively. As an application of the weak maximum principle, we have proved a maximum-norm best approximation property of the isoparametric finite element method for the Poisson equation in a curvilinear polyhedron. The proof contains non-trivial modifications of Schatz's argument due to the non-conformity of the iso-parametric finite elements, which requires us to construct a globally smooth flow map which maps the curvilinear polyhedron to a perturbed larger domain on which we can establish the $W^{1,\infty}$ regularity estimate of the Poisson equation uniformly with respect to the perturbation.
