Abstract:We prove that the multiplication map L^a(M)\otimes_M L^b(M)\to L^{a+b}(M) is an isometric isomorphism of (quasi)Banach M-M-bimodules. Here L^a(M)=L_{1/a}(M) is the noncommutative L_p-space of an arbitrary von Neumann algebra M and \otimes_M denotes the algebraic tensor product over M equipped with the (quasi)projective tensor norm, but without any kind of completion. Similarly, the left multiplication map L^a(M)\to Hom_M(L^b(M),L^{a+b}(M)) is an isometric isomorphism of (quasi)Banach M-M-bimodules, where Hom_M denotes the algebraic internal hom. In particular, we establish an automatic continuity result for such maps. Applications of these results include establishing explicit algebraic equivalences between the categories of L_p(M)-modules of Junge and Sherman for all p\ge0, as well as identifying subspaces of the space of bilinear forms on L^p-spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that four main diagonal spaces of injective tensor products are pairwise isometrically isomorphic. When E is a Banach lattice, we show that the tensor diagonal of E is a 1-unconditional basic sequence in both the n-fold injective tensor product of E and the n-fold symmetric injective tensor product of E.

Abstract:In this paper we consider a question of Roger Wiegand, which is about tensor products of finitely generated modules that have finite projective dimension over commutative Noetherian rings. We construct modules of infinite projective dimension (and of infinite Gorenstein dimension) whose tensor products have finite projective dimension. Furthermore we determine nontrivial conditions under which such examples cannot occur. For example we prove that, if the tensor product of two nonzero modules, at least one of which is totally reflexive (or equivalently Gorenstein-projective), has finite projective dimension, then both modules in question have finite projective dimension.

Abstract:We analyze certain algebraic structures of the Banach space projective tensor product of $C^*$-algebras which are comparable with their known counterparts or the Haagerup tensor product and the operator space projective tensor product of $C^*$-algebras. Highlights of this analysis include (a) injectivity of the Banach space projective tensor product when restricted to the tensor products of $C^*$-algebras, (b) detailed structure of closed ideals of $A \otimes_{\gamma} B$ in terms of those of $A$ and $B$, (c) identification of certain spaces of ideals of $A \otimes_{\gamma} B$ in terms of those of $A$ and $B$ from the perspective of hull-kernel topology, and (d) identification of the center of $A \otimes_{\gamma} B$ with $Z(A) \otimes_{\gamma} Z(B)$, where $A$ and $B$ are $C^*$-algebras.

Abstract:Let λ be a reflexive Banach sequence lattice and X be a Banach lattice. In this paper, we show that the positive injective tensor product $$\lambda {\mathord{\buildrel{\lower3pt\hbox{$\scriptscriptstyle\smile$}}\over \otimes } _{\left| \varepsilon \right|}}X$$ is a Grothendieck space if and only if X is a Grothendieck space and every positive linear operator from λ* to X** is compact.

Abstract:We consider projectivity and injectivity of Hilbert C*-modules in the categories of Hilbert C*-(bi-)modules over a fixed C*-algebra of coefficients (and another fixed C*-algebra represented as bounded module operators) and bounded (bi-)module morphisms, either necessarily adjointable or arbitrary ones. As a consequence of these investigations, we obtain a set of equivalent conditions characterizing C*-subalgebras of C*-algebras of compact operators on Hilbert spaces in terms of general properties of Hilbert C*-modules over them. Our results complement results recently obtained by B. Magajna, J. Schweizer and M. Kusuda. In particular, all Hilbert C*-(bi-)modules over C*-algebras of compact operators on Hilbert spaces are both injective and projective in the categories we consider. For more general C*-algebras we obtain classes of injective and projective Hilbert C*-(bi-)modules.

Abstract:Algebra Colloquium, Volume 31, Issue 01, Page 97-110, March 2024. We consider the locally self-injective property of the product [math] of category [math] of finite sets and injections. Explicitly, we prove that the external tensor product commutes with the coinduction functor, and hence preserves injective modules. As corollaries, every projective [math]-module over a field of characteristic 0 is injective, and the Serre quotient of the category of finitely generated [math]-modules by the category of finitely generated torsion [math]-modules is equivalent to the category of finite-dimensional [math]-modules.

Abstract:We prove that for infinite, countable, compact, Hausdorff spaces $K,L$, $C(K)\widehat{\otimes}_\pi C(L)$ is isomorphic to exactly one of the spaces $C(\omega^{\omega^\xi})\widehat{\otimes}_\pi C(\omega^{\omega^\zeta})$, $0\leqslant \zeta\leqslant \xi<\omega_1$. We also prove that $C(K)\widehat{\otimes}_\pi C(L)$ is not isomorphic to $C(M)$ for any compact, Hausdorff space $M$.

Abstract:In this paper we deal with two weaker forms of injectivity which turn out to have a rich structure behind: separable injectivity and universal separable injectivity. We show several structural and stability properties of these classes of Banach spaces. We provide natural examples of (universally) separably injective spaces, including $\mathcal L_\infty$ ultraproducts built over countably incomplete ultrafilters, in spite of the fact that these ultraproducts are never injective. We obtain two fundamental characterizations of universally separably injective spaces: a) A Banach space $E$ is universally separably injective if and only if every separable subspace is contained in a copy of $\ell_\infty$ inside $E$. b) A Banach space $E$ is universally separably injective if and only if for every separable space $S$ one has $\Ext(\ell_\infty/S, E)=0$. The final Section of the paper focuses on special properties of 1-separably injective spaces. Lindenstrauss\ obtained in the middle sixties a result that can be understood as a proof that, under the continuum hypothesis, 1-separably injective spaces are 1-universally separably injective; he left open the question in {\sf ZFC}. We construct a consistent example of a Banach space of type $C(K)$ which is 1-separably injective but not 1-universally separably injective. We show that, under the continuum hypothesis, "to be universally separably injective" is not a $3$-space property, as we wrongly claimed in the paper mentioned in the title.

Abstract:The article associates two fundamental lattice constructions with each regular unital real ordered Banach space (function system). These are used to establish certain results in the theory of operator algebras, specifically relating the injective envelope of a separable C*-algebra with its enveloping von Neumann algebra in a given faithful separable representation. The last section investigates on lattices of projections arising in injective C*-algebras and von Neumann algebras and certain nonlinear maps sending projections to projections which are essentially determined by their values on positive projections.

Abstract:Let $m,n$ be positive integers with $m<n$. Under certain assumptions on the Banach space $X$, we prove that the $n$-fold projective tensor product of $X$, $\widehat{\otimes}^n_\pi X$, is not isomorphic to any subspace of any quotient of the $m$-fold projective tensor product, $\widehat{\otimes}_\pi^m X$. In particular, we prove that $\widehat{\otimes}^n_\pi c_0$ is not isomorphic to any subspace of any quotient of $\widehat{\otimes}_\pi^m c_0$.

The definition of injective envelopes of an extension of a Hilbert C*-modules over a C*-algebra is introduced, and is characterized in terms of the injectivity and essence. It is shown that every Hilbert C*-module has a unique (up to H-isometrics) injective envelope if it exists. It is also shown that an extension of a Hilbert C*-module is an injective envelope if and only if it is an injective and essential extension. Moreover, every Hilbert C*-module over a W*-algebra has a unique (up to H-isometrics) injective envelope and the injective envelope of a Hilbert C*-module H is maximal essential extension of H.

Abstract:There exist injective Tauberian operators on $L_1(0,1)$ that have dense, non closed range. This gives injective, non surjective operators on $\ell_\infty$ that have dense range. Consequently, there are two quasi-complementary, non complementary subspaces of $\ell_\infty$ that are isometric to $\ell_\infty$.

Abstract:We explore functors between operator space categories, some properties of these functors, and establish relations between objects in these categories and their images under these functors, in particular regarding injectivity and injective envelopes. We also compare the purely categorical definition of injectivity with the 'standard' operator theoretical definition. An appendix by D. P. Abstract:We introduce the notion of isometric envelope of a subspace in a Banach space, establishing its connections with several key elements: (a) we explore its relation to the mean ergodic projection on fixed points within a semigroup of contractions, (b) we draw parallels with Korovkin sets from the 1970s, (c) we investigate its impact on the extension properties of linear isometric embeddings. We use this concept to address the recent conjecture that the Gurarij space and the spaces , are the only separable approximately ultrahomogeneous Banach spaces (a certain multidimensional transitivity of the action of the linear isometry group). The similar conjecture for Fraïssé Banach spaces (a strengthening of the approximately homogeneous property) is also considered. We characterize the Hilbert space as the only separable reflexive space in which any closed subspace coincides with its envelope; and we show that the Gurarij space satisfies the same property. We compute some envelopes in the case of Lebesgue spaces, showing that the reflexive -spaces are the only reflexive rearrangement invariant spaces on [0, 1] for which all 1-complemented subspaces are envelopes. We also identify the isometrically unique "full" quotient space of by a Hilbertian subspace, for appropriate values of p , as well as the associated topological group embedding of the unitary group into the isometry group of .

Abstract:The aim of this note is to prove that, given two superreflexive Banach spaces $X$ and $Y$, then $X\widehat{\otimes}_\pi Y$ is superreflexive if and only if either $X$ or $Y$ is finite-dimensional. In a similar way, we prove that $X\widehat{\otimes}_\varepsilon Y$ is superreflexive if and only if either $X$ or $Y$ is finite-dimensional.
