Abstract:Kawakubo and Uchida showed that, if a closed oriented 4k-dimensional manifold M admits a semi-free circle action such that the dimension of the fixed point set is less than 2k, then the signature of M vanishes. In this note, by using G-signature theorem and the rigidity of the signature operator, we generalize this result to more general circle actions. Combining the same idea with the remarkable Witten-Taubes-Bott rigidity theorem, we explore more vanishing results on spin manifolds admitting such circle actions. Our results are closely related to some earlier results of Conner-Floyd, Landweber-Stong and Hirzebruch-Slodowy.

Abstract:Given an arithmetic lattice of the unitary group U(3,1) arising from a hermitian form over a CM-field, we show that all unitary representations of U(3,1) with nonzero cohomology contribute to the cohomology of the attached arithmetic complex 3-manifold, at least when we pass to a finite-index subgroup of the given arithmetic lattice.

Abstract:We first show that for a bounded pseudoconvex domain with a manifold quotient of finite-volume in the sense of Kahler-Einstein measure, the identity component of the automorphism group of this domain is semi-simple without compact factors. This partially answers an open question in [Fra95]. Then we apply this result in different settings to solve several open problems, for examples, (1). We prove that the automorphism group of the Griffiths domain [Gri71] in ℂ^2 is discrete. This gives a complete answer to an open question raised four decades ago. (2). We show that for a contractible HHR/USq complex manifold D with a finite-volume manifold quotient M, if D contains a one-parameter group of holomorphic automorphisms and the fundamental group of M is irreducible, then D is biholomorphic to a bounded symmetric domain. This theorem can be viewed as a finite-volume version of Nadel-Frankel's solution for the Kahzdan conjecture, which has been open for years. (3). We show that for a bounded convex domain D⊂ℂ^n of C^2-smooth boundary, if D has a finite-volume manifold quotient with an irreducible fundamental group, then D is biholomorphic to the unit ball in ℂ^n, which partially solves an old conjecture of Yau. For (2) and (3) above, if the complex dimension is equal to 2, more refined results will be provided.
Counting Rational Curves and Standard Complex Structures on HyperKähler ALE 4-manifolds

Abstract:All hyperKähler ALE 4-manifolds with a given non-trivial finite group $\Gamma$ in $SU(2)$ at infinity are parameterized by an open dense subset of a real linear space of dimension $3$rank$\Phi$. Here, $\Phi$ denotes the root system associated with $\Gamma$ via the McKay correspondence. Such manifolds are diffeomorphic to the minimal resolution of a Kleinian singularity. By using the period map of the twistor space, we specify those points in the parameter space at which the hyperKählerian family of complex structures includes the complex structure of the minimal resolution. Furthermore, we count the rational curves lying on each hyperKähler ALE 4-manifold. As an application, we prove that the twistor space of any hyperKähler ALE cannot be Kählerian. In particular, we strengthen some results of Kronheimer (J. Differential Geom., 29(3):665--683, 1989) and provide examples of non-compact and non-Kählerian twistor spaces.

On the automorphism groups of hyperbolic manifolds

Abstract:Let Diff(N) and Homeo(N) denote the smooth and topological group of automorphisms respectively that fix the boundary of the n-manifold N, pointwise. We show that the (n-4)-th homotopy group of Homeo(S^1 \times D^{n-1}) is not finitely-generated for n >= 4 and in particular the topological mapping-class group of S^1\times D^3 is infinitely generated. We apply this to show that the smooth and topological automorphism groups of finite-volume hyperbolic n-manifolds (when n >= 4) do not have the homotopy-type of finite CW-complexes, results previously known for n >= 11 by Farrell and Jones. In particular, we show that if N is a closed hyperbolic n-manifold, and if Diff_0(N) represents the subgroup of diffeomorphisms that are homotopic to the identity, then the (n-4)-th homotopy group of Diff_0(N) is infinitely generated and hence if n=4, then \pi_0\Diff_0(N) is infinitely generated with similar results holding topologically.

Abstract:We determine projective equations of smooth complex cubic fourfolds with symplectic automorphisms by classifying 6-dimensional projective representations of Laza and Zheng's 34 groups. In particular, we determine the number of irreducible components for moduli spaces of cubic fourfolds with symplectic actions by these groups. We also discuss the fields of definition of cubic fourfolds in six maximal cases.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the compactness of a boundary value problem for hyperkaehler 4-manifolds. We show that under certain topological conditions and the positive mean curvature condition on the boundary, a sequence of hyperkaehler triples converges smoothly up to diffeomorphisms if and only if their restrictions to the boundary converge smoothly up to diffeomorphisms. We also generalize this result to torsion-free hypersymplectic triples.

Abstract:For a compact almost complex 4-manifold $(M,J)$, we study the subgroups $H^{\pm}_J$ of $H^2(M, \mathbb{R})$ consisting of cohomology classes representable by $J$-invariant, respectively, $J$-anti-invariant 2-forms. If $b^+ =1$, we show that for generic almost complex structures on $M$, the subgroup $H^-_J$ is trivial. Computations of the subgroups and their dimensions $h^{\pm}_J$ are obtained for almost complex structures related to integrable ones. We also prove semi-continuity properties for $h^{\pm}_J$.

Abstract:For a simply-connected closed manifold $X$ of $\dim X \neq 4$, the mapping class group $\pi_0(\mathrm{Diff}(X))$ is known to be finitely generated. We prove that analogous finite generation fails in dimension 4. Namely, we show that there exist simply-connected closed smooth 4-manifolds whose mapping class groups are not finitely generated. More generally, for each $k>0$, we prove that there are simply-connected closed smooth 4-manifolds $X$ for which $H_k(B\mathrm{Diff}(X);\mathbb{Z})$ are not finitely generated. The infinitely generated subgroup of $H_k(B\mathrm{Diff}(X);\mathbb{Z})$ which we detect are topologically trivial, and unstable under the connected sum of $S^2 \times S^2$. The proof uses characteristic classes obtained from Seiberg-Witten theory.

Abstract:In this first part we describe the group $Aut_{\mathbb{Z}}(S)$ of cohomologically trivial automorphisms of a properly elliptic surface (a minimal surface $S$ with Kodaira dimension $\kappa(S)=1$), in the initial case $ \chi(\mathcal{O}_S) =0$. In particular, in the case where $Aut_{\mathbb{Z}}(S)$ is finite, we give the upper bound 4 for its cardinality, showing more precisely that if $Aut_{\mathbb{Z}}(S)$ is nontrivial, it is one of the following groups: $\mathbb{Z}/2, \mathbb{Z}/3, (\mathbb{Z}/2)^2$. We also show with easy examples that the groups $\mathbb{Z}/2, \mathbb{Z}/3$ do effectively occur. Respectively, in the case where $Aut_{\mathbb{Z}}(S)$ is infinite, we give the sharp upper bound 2 for the number of its connected components.

Equivariant cohomology of a complexity-one four-manifold is determined by combinatorial data

Abstract:For Hamiltonian circle actions on compact, connected, four-dimensional manifolds, we give a generators and relations description for the even part of the equivariant cohomology, as an algebra over the equivariant cohomology of a point. This description depends on combinatorial data encoded in the decorated graph of the manifold. We then give an explicit combinatorial description of all weak algebra isomorphisms. We use this description to prove that the even parts of the equivariant cohomology algebras are weakly isomorphic and the odd groups have the same ranks if and only if the labeled graphs obtained from the decorated graphs by forgetting the height and area labels are isomorphic. As a consequence, we give an example of an isomorphism of equivariant cohomology algebras that cannot be induced by an equivariant diffeomorphism of manifolds preserving a compatible almost complex structure. We also provide a soft proof that there are finitely many maximal Hamiltonian circle actions on a fixed compact, connected, four-dimensional symplectic manifold.

Abstract:We extend the lattice-theoretic approach of Brandhorst--Cattaneo to classify algebraically trivial actions on the known IHS manifolds, up to deformation and birational conjugacy. In particular, we classify even order algebraically trivial non symplectic automorphisms, with or without trivial discriminant action. In the case of nontrivial discriminant actions, we show that such automorphisms exist only for finitely many known deformation types and orders.

Abstract:This article grew out of an effort to understand the smooth mapping class groups of certain 4-manifolds in a geometric manner. We prove a smooth analog of the Birman-Hilden theorem for manifolds that admit a hyperk\"ahler structure. This allows us to probe the smooth mapping class groups associated to certain manifolds with nontrivial fundamental groups. Along the way, and of independent interest, we prove a global Torelli theorem for generalized Enriques manifolds. The techniques used are analogous to Teichm\"uller-theoretic methods in the classical theory of mapping class groups. We apply this hyperk\"ahler Birman-Hilden theorem to obtain results regarding smooth, metric, and complex Nielsen realization on Enriques surfaces.

Abstract:Under the framework of dynamics on normal projective varieties by Kawamata, Nakayama and Zhang \cite{Kawamata85,Nakayama10,NZ09,NZ10,Zhang16}, Hu and the author \cite{HL21}, we may reduce Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture for automorphisms $f$ on normal projective threefolds $X$ with either the canonical divisor $K_X$ is trivial or negative Kodaira dimension to the following two case: (i) $f$ is a primitively automorphism of a weak Calabi-Yau threefold (ii) $X$ is a rationally connected threefold. And we prove Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture is true for automorphisms of normal projective varieties $X$ with the irregularity $q(X)\ge\dim X-1$. Finally, we discuss Kawaguchi-Silverman conjecture on normal projective varieties with Picard number two.

Abstract:In this paper, we give the sharp estimates for the degree of symmetry and the semi-simple degree of symmetry of certain four dimensional fiber bundles by virtue of the rigidity theorem of harmonic maps due to Schoen and Yau. As a corollary of this estimate, we compute the degree of symmetry and the semi-simple degree of symmetry of ${\Bbb C}P^2\times V$, where $V$ is closed smooth manifold admitting a real analytic Riemannian metric of non-positive curvature. In addition, by the Albanese map, we obtain the sharp estimate of the degree of symmetry of a compact smooth manifold with some restrictions on its one dimensional cohomology.

Abstract:Due to the orbifold singularities, the intersection numbers on the moduli space of curves $\bar{\sM}_{g,n}$ are in general rational numbers rather than integers. We study the properties of the denominators of these intersection numbers and their relationship with the orders of automorphism groups of stable curves. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Itzykson and Zuber. We also present a conjectural multinomial type numerical property for Hodge integrals.
