Abstract:The atmospheric neutrino flux at very high energies is dominated by prompt neutrinos, mostly contributed by the decays of charmed hadrons produced in the forward direction by cosmic ray interactions with air nuclei. Theoretical predictions of the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux have large uncertainties mainly related to charm hadron production. Prompt neutrinos can also be studied through high-energy colliders. In particular, two ongoing forward experiments and the proposed Forward Physics Facility at the LHC can detect forward prompt neutrinos. We will present the kinematic regions relevant to the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux in terms of collider kinematic variables, the collision energy $\sqrt{s}$ and the center-of-mass rapidity of charm hadrons $y$, and discuss implications of the forward experiments at the LHC on the theoretical predictions of the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the prediction uncertainty of the high - energy atmospheric neutrino flux, especially the flux of "prompt" neutrinos. These prompt neutrinos mainly come from the decay in the forward direction of heavy - flavor hadrons formed by heavy quarks (especially charm quarks) produced by the interaction between cosmic rays and atmospheric nuclei. The paper points out that there is a large uncertainty in the theoretical prediction of the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux, which is mainly related to the production of heavy - flavor hadrons. In addition, the paper also explores the possibility of studying prompt neutrinos through high - energy collider experiments, such as forward experiments on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), and how these experiments can help reduce the uncertainty in theoretical predictions, so as to better understand the flux of prompt atmospheric neutrinos. Specifically, the paper focuses on prompt atmospheric neutrinos in the energy range from 10 ^ 5 to 10 ^ 7 GeV. Prompt neutrinos in this range may become the main component of the atmospheric neutrino flux and serve as an important background for the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux. By analyzing the dynamic regions under different center - of - mass collision energies \(\sqrt{s}\) and charm - hadron center - of - mass - system rapidities \(y\), the paper shows the dynamic overlap of prompt neutrino production in the atmosphere and LHC. Although the energy of LHC cannot cover all energy regions of prompt atmospheric neutrinos, its energy is high enough to cover the above important energy interval. In particular, prompt atmospheric neutrinos produced in the rapidity range of 4.5 < \(y\) < 7.2. This part of the rapidity range is beyond the coverage of current LHC experiments for measuring charm - hadron production, but future forward - physics facilities (FPF) can detect neutrinos produced from this rapidity region. This will help to understand the production of charm - hadrons, constrain parton distribution functions (PDFs), and improve the prediction of the prompt atmospheric neutrino flux.
