Abstract:We consider the question which compact metric spaces can be obtained as a Lipschitz image of the middle third Cantor set, or more generally, as a Lipschitz image of a subset of a given compact metric space. In the general case we prove that if $A$ and $B$ are compact metric spaces and the Hausdorff dimension of $A$ is bigger than the upper box dimension of $B$, then there exist a compact set $A'\subset A$ and a Lipschitz onto map $f\colon A'\to B$. As a corollary we prove that any `natural' dimension in $\mathbb{R}^n$ must be between the Hausdorff and upper box dimensions. We show that if $A$ and $B$ are self-similar sets with the strong separation condition with equal Hausdorff dimension and $A$ is homogeneous, then $A$ can be mapped onto $B$ by a Lipschitz map if and only if $A$ and $B$ are bilipschitz equivalent. For given $\alpha>0$ we also give a characterization of those compact metric spaces that can be obtained as an $\alpha$-Hölder image of a compact subset of $\mathbb{R}$. The quantity we introduce for this turns out to be closely related to the upper box dimension.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The core problem that this paper attempts to solve is to determine which compact metric spaces can be obtained through Lipschitz mappings of a given compact metric space \(X\) or Lipschitz mappings of its subsets. Specifically, the paper explores the following two aspects: 1. **General problem**: For a given compact metric space \(X\), which compact metric spaces can be the result of Lipschitz mappings of \(X\) or its subsets? - In particular, the paper considers which compact metric spaces can be generated by Lipschitz mappings of the middle third Cantor set. 2. **Problem under specific conditions**: For self - similar sets satisfying the strong separation condition (SSC), when the Hausdorff dimensions of two self - similar sets are equal, can one self - similar set be mapped onto the other through a Lipschitz mapping? ### Main results 1. **General results of Lipschitz mappings**: - If compact metric spaces \(A\) and \(B\) satisfy \(\text{dim}_H A>\text{dim}_B B\), then there exists a compact subset \(A'\) of \(A\) and a surjective Lipschitz mapping \(f:A'\to B\). - As a corollary, any "natural" dimension must be between the Hausdorff dimension and the upper box dimension. 2. **Special results for self - similar sets**: - For self - similar sets \(A\) and \(B\) satisfying the strong separation condition, if their Hausdorff dimensions are equal and \(A\) is homogeneous, then \(A\) can be mapped onto \(B\) through a Lipschitz mapping if and only if \(A\) and \(B\) are bi - Lipschitz equivalent. 3. **Results for Hölder mappings**: - For a given \(\alpha>0\), the paper also gives sufficient conditions for which compact metric spaces can be obtained through \(\alpha\)-Hölder mappings of a compact subset of \([0, 1]\). These conditions are closely related to the upper box dimension. ### Applications and significance - **Theoretical significance**: These results deepen the understanding of the properties of Lipschitz mappings and Hölder mappings in spaces of different dimensions, especially in fractal geometry and metric space theory. - **Practical applications**: These theoretical results can be applied to fields such as image processing, data compression, and complex system modeling, especially when dealing with data with fractal characteristics. ### Formulas and symbol explanations - \(\text{dim}_H\) represents the Hausdorff dimension. - \(\text{dim}_B\) represents the upper box dimension. - \(\text{dim}_P\) represents the packing dimension. - \(A\) and \(B\) are compact metric spaces. - \(f:A\to B\) is a Lipschitz mapping. - An \(\alpha\)-Hölder mapping satisfies \(d_Y(f(x), f(z))\leq C d_X(x, z)^\alpha\), where \(C\) is a constant. Hopefully, these explanations will help you better understand the core problems and main results of the paper.
