Abstract:Given two positive integers $n$ and $k$, we obtain a formula for the base size of the symmetric group of degree $n$ in its action on $k$-subsets. Then, we use this formula to compute explicitly the base size for each $n$ and for each $k\le 14$.

Abstract:A base for a permutation group $G$ acting on a set $\Omega$ is a subset $\mathcal{B}$ of $\Omega$ such that the pointwise stabiliser $G_{(\mathcal{B})}$ is trivial. Let $n$ and $r$ be positive integers with $n>2r$. The symmetric and alternating groups $\mathrm{S}_n$ and $\mathrm{A}_n$ admit natural primitive actions on the set of $r$-element subsets of $\{1,2,\dots, n\}$. Building on work of Halasi [6], we provide explicit expressions for the base sizes of all of these actions, and hence determine the base size of all primitive actions of $\mathrm{S}_n$ and $\mathrm{A}_n$.

Abstract:A base for a permutation group $G$ acting on a set $\Omega$ is a sequence $\mathcal{B}$ of points of $\Omega$ such that the pointwise stabiliser $G_{\mathcal{B}}$ is trivial. The base size of $G$ is the size of a smallest base for $G$. We derive a character theoretic formula for the base size of a class of groups admitting a certain kind of irreducible character. Moreover, we prove a formula for enumerating the non-equivalent bases for $G$ of size $l\in\mathbb{N}$. As a consequence of our results, we present a very short, entirely algebraic proof of the formula of Mecenero and Spiga~\cite{MeSp} for the base size of the symmetric group $\mathrm{S}_n$ acting on the $k$-element subsets of $\{1,2,3,\dots,n\}$. Our methods also provide a formula for the base size of many product-type permutation groups.

Abstract:An irredundant base of a group $G$ acting faithfully on a finite set $\Gamma$ is a sequence of points in $\Gamma$ that produces a strictly descending chain of pointwise stabiliser subgroups in $G$, terminating at the trivial subgroup. Suppose that $G$ is $\operatorname{S}_n$ or $\operatorname{A}_n$ acting primitively on $\Gamma$, and that the point stabiliser is primitive in its natural action on $n$ points. We prove that the maximum size of an irredundant base of $G$ is $O\left(\sqrt{n}\right)$, and in most cases $O\left((\log n)^2\right)$. We also show that these bounds are best possible.

Abstract:A totally symmetric set is a subset of a group such that every permutation of the subset can be realized by conjugation in the group. The (non-)existence of large totally symmetric sets obstruct homomorphisms, so bounds on the sizes of totally symmetric sets are of particular use. In this paper, we prove that if a group has a totally symmetric set of size $k$, it must have order at least $(k+1)!$. We also show that with three exceptions, $\{(1 \; i)\mid i = 2,\ldots,n\} \subset S_n$ is the only totally symmetric set making this bound sharp; it is thus the largest totally symmetric set relative to the size of the ambient group.

On the regularity number of a finite group and other base-related invariants

Abstract:A $k$-tuple $(H_1, \ldots, H_k)$ of core-free subgroups of a finite group $G$ is said to be regular if $G$ has a regular orbit on the Cartesian product $G/H_1 \times \cdots \times G/H_k$. The regularity number of $G$, denoted $R(G)$, is the smallest positive integer $k$ with the property that every such $k$-tuple is regular. In this paper, we develop some general methods for studying the regularity of subgroup tuples in arbitrary finite groups, and we determine the precise regularity number of all almost simple groups with an alternating or sporadic socle. For example, we prove that $R(S_n) = n-1$ and $R(A_n) = n-2$. We also formulate and investigate natural generalisations of several well-studied problems on base sizes for finite permutation groups, including conjectures due to Cameron, Pyber and Vdovin. For instance, we extend earlier work of Burness, O'Brien and Wilson by proving that $R(G) \leqslant 7$ for every almost simple sporadic group, with equality if and only if $G$ is the Mathieu group ${\rm M}_{24}$. We also show that every triple of soluble subgroups in an almost simple sporadic group is regular, which generalises recent work of Burness on base sizes for transitive actions of sporadic groups with soluble point stabilisers.

Abstract:A LAnKe (also known as a Lie algebra of the $n$th kind, or a Filippov algebra) is a vector space equipped with a skew-symmetric $n$-linear form that satisfies the generalized Jacobi identity. The symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_m$ acts on the multilinear part of the free LAnKe on $m=(n-1)k+1$ generators, where $k$ is the number of brackets. The corresponding representation was studied by Friedmann, Hanlon, Stanley and Wachs, who asked whether for $n \ge k$, its irreducible decomposition contains no summand whose Young diagram has at most $k-1$ columns. It is known that the answer is affirmative if $k \le 3$. In this paper, we show that the answer is affirmative for all $k$.

Abstract:Let $G \leqslant {\rm Sym}(\Omega)$ be a finite permutation group and recall that the base size of $G$ is the minimal size of a subset of $\Omega$ with trivial pointwise stabiliser. There is an extensive literature on base sizes for primitive groups, but there are very few results for primitive groups of product type. In this paper, we initiate a systematic study of bases in this setting. Our first main result determines the base size of every product type primitive group of the form $L \wr P \leqslant {\rm Sym}(\Omega)$ with soluble point stabilisers, where $\Omega = \Gamma^k$, $L \leqslant {\rm Sym}(\Gamma)$ and $P \leqslant S_k$ is transitive. This extends recent work of Burness on almost simple primitive groups. We also obtain an expression for the number of regular suborbits of any product type group of the form $L \wr P$ and we classify the groups with a unique regular suborbit under the assumption that $P$ is primitive, which involves extending earlier results due to Seress and Dolfi. We present applications on the Saxl graphs of base-two product type groups and we conclude by establishing several new results on base sizes for general product type primitive groups.

Abstract:The challenge of symmetry-adapting large basis sets to finite groups, apart from extensive calculations with large matrices, is obtaining linearly independent bases for frequently repeated irreducible representations, a process that is not determined by the group theory. The usual projection method is modified here to solve this problem efficiently and systematically. The resulting basis is suitably conditioned so that repeated irreducible representations are identical as required by the symmetry-generation theorem.

On conjugacy classes of groups of Squarefree order

Abstract:The problem of finding the largest finite group with a certain class number (number of conjugacy classes), $k(G)$, has been investigated by a number of researchers since the early 1900's and has been solved by computer for $k(G) \leq 9$. (For the restriction to simple groups for $k(G) \leq 12$.) One has also tried to find a general upper bound on $|G|$ in terms of $k(G)$. The best known upper bound in the general case is in the order of magnitude $|G| \leq k(G)^{2^{k(G)-1}}$. In this paper we consider the restriction of this longstanding problem to groups of squarefree order. We derive an explicit formula for the class number $k(G)$ of any group of squarefree order and we also obtain an estimate $|G| \leq k(G)^3$ in this case. Combining the two results we get an efficient way to compute the largest squarefree order a group with a certain class number can have. We also provide an implementation of this algorithm to compute the maximal squarefree $|G|$ for arbitrary $k(G)$ and display the results obtained for $k(G) \leq 100$.

Integer diagonal forms for subset intersection relations

Abstract:For integers $0 \leq \ell \leq k_{r} \leq k_{c} \leq n$, we give a description for the Smith group of the incidence matrix with rows (columns) indexed by the size $k_r$ ($k_c$, respectively) subsets of an $n$-element set, where incidence means intersection in a set of size $\ell$. This generalizes work of Wilson and Bier from the 1990s which dealt only with the case where incidence meant inclusion. Our approach also describes the Smith group of any matrix in the $\mathbb{Z}$-linear span of these matrices so includes all integer matrices in the Bose-Mesner algebra of the Johnson association scheme: for example, the association matrices themselves as well as the Laplacian, signless Laplacian, Seidel adjacency matrix, etc. of the associated graphs. In particular, we describe the critical (also known as sandpile) groups of these graphs. The complexity of our formula grows with the $k$ parameters, but is independent of $n$ and $\ell$, which often leads to an efficient algorithm for computing these groups. We illustrate our techniques to give diagonal forms of matrices attached to the Kneser and Johnson graphs for subsets of size $3$, whose invariants have never before been described, and recover results from a variety of papers in the literature in a unified way.

Abstract:A base for a permutation group $G$ acting on a set $\Omega$ is a sequence $\mathcal{B}$ of points of $\Omega$ such that the pointwise stabiliser $G_{\mathcal{B}}$ is trivial. Denote the minimum size of a base for $G$ by $b(G)$. There is a natural greedy algorithm for constructing a base of relatively small size; denote by $\mathcal{G}(G)$ the maximum size of a base it produces. Motivated by a long-standing conjecture of Cameron, we determine $\mathcal{G}(G)$ for every almost simple primitive group $G$ with socle a sporadic simple group, showing that $\mathcal{G}(G)=b(G)$.

Abstract:For integer $k \geq 1$, let $S_k(n)$ denote the sum of the $k$th powers of the first $n$ positive integers $1^k + 2^k + \cdots + n^k$. In this paper, we derive a new formula expressing $2^{2k}$ times $S_{2k}(n)$ as a sum of $k$ terms involving the numbers in the $k$th row of the integer sequence A304330, which is closely related to the central factorial numbers of the second kind with even indices. Furthermore, we provide an alternative proof of Knuth's formula for $S_{2k}(n)$ and show that it can equally be expressed in terms of A304330. We also deduce the corresponding formulas for the odd-indexed power sums $S_{2k-1}(n)$. Finally, we determine the Faulhaber form of $S_{2k}(n)$ and $S_{2k+1}(n)$ in terms of the sequence A304330 and the Legendre-Stirling numbers of the first kind.

Essential dimension of symmetric groups in prime characteristic

Abstract:The essential dimension $\operatorname{ed}_k({\rm S}_n)$ of the symmetric group ${\rm S}_n$ is the minimal integer $d$ such that the general polynomial $x^n + a_1 x^{n-1} + \ldots + a_n$ can be reduced to a $d$-parameter form by a Tschirnhaus transformation. Finding this number is a long-standing open problem, originating in the work of Felix Klein, long before essential dimension was formally defined. We now know that $\operatorname{ed}_k({\rm S}_n)$ lies between $\lfloor n/2 \rfloor$ and $n-3$ for every $n \geqslant 5$ and every field $k$ of characteristic different from $2$. Moreover, if $\operatorname{char}(k) = 0$, then $\operatorname{ed}_k({\rm S}_n) \geqslant \lfloor (n+1)/2 \rfloor$ for any $n \geqslant 6$. The value of $\operatorname{ed}_k({\rm S}_n)$ is not known for any $n \geqslant 8$ and any field $k$, though it is widely believed that $\operatorname{ed}_k({\rm S}_n)$ should be $n-3$ for every $n \geqslant 5$, at least in characteristic $0$. In this paper we show that for every odd prime $p$ there are infinitely many positive integers $n$ such that $\operatorname{ed}_{\mathbb F_p}(\rm{S}_n) \leqslant n-4$.

Abstract:Given a partition $\lambda$ of a number $k$, it is known that by adding a long line of length $n-k$, the dimension of the associated representation of $S_{n}$ is an integer-valued polynomial of degree $k$ in $n$. We show that its expansion in the binomial basis is bounded by the length of $\lambda$, and that the resulting coefficient of index $h$, with alternating signs, counts the standard Young tableaux of shape $\lambda$ in which a given collection of consecutive $h$ numbers lie in increasing rows. We also construct bijections in order to demonstare explicitly that this number is indeed independent of the set of consecutive $h$ numbers used.

Abstract:We consider symmetric tensors of format: $3 \times 3$ over $\mathbb{F}_p$ for $p = 2, 3, 5$; $3 \times 3 \times 3$ over $\mathbb{F}_p$ for $p = 2, 3$; and $3 \times 3 \times 3 \times 3$ over $\mathbb{F}_p$ for $p = 2, 3$. In each case we compute their equivalence classes under the action of the general linear group $GL_3 (\mathbb{F}_p )$. We use computer algebra to determine the set of tensors of each symmetric rank, then we compute the orbit of the group action. We determine the maximum symmetric rank of these tensors and compare it with the maximum rank.

Abstract:Let G be a permutation group on a finite set . The base size of G is the minimal size of a subset of with trivial pointwise stabiliser in G. In this paper, we extend earlier work of Fawcett by determining the precise base size of every finite primitive permutation group of diagonal type. In particular, this is the first family of primitive groups arising in the O'Nan–Scott theorem for which the exact base size has been computed in all cases. Our methods also allow us to determine all the primitive groups of diagonal type with a unique regular suborbit.

Abstract:For a fixed integer $k$, we define a sequence $A_k=(a_k(n))_{n\geq0}$ and a corresponding sparse subsequence $S_k$ using the cardinality of the $n$-th symmetric power of the set $\{1,2,\ldots, k\}$. For $k\in\{2,\dots,8\}$, we find recursive formulas for $S_k$, and show that the values $a_{k}(0)$, $a_{k}(1)$, and $a_{k}(3)$ are sufficient for constructing $A_{k}$.
