Abstract:Communication in millimeter wave (mmWave) and even terahertz (THz) frequency bands is ushering in a new era of wireless communications. Beam management, namely initial access and beam tracking, has been recognized as an essential technique to ensure robust mmWave/THz communications, especially for mobile scenarios. However, narrow beams at higher carrier frequency lead to huge beam measurement overhead, which has a negative impact on beam acquisition and tracking. In addition, the beam management process is further complicated by the fluctuation of mmWave/THz channels, the random movement patterns of users, and the dynamic changes in the environment. For mmWave and THz communications toward 6G, we have witnessed a substantial increase in research and industrial attention on artificial intelligence (AI), reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), and integrated sensing and communications (ISAC). The introduction of these enabling technologies presents both open opportunities and unique challenges for beam management. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey on mmWave and THz beam management. Further, we give some insights on technical challenges and future research directions in this promising area.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to solve the problem of beam management in millimeter - wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) communications, especially for 6G communication systems. Specifically, beam management includes initial access and beam tracking, and these techniques are crucial for ensuring the robustness of mmWave/THz communications in mobile scenarios. However, the narrow beams in high - frequency bands lead to huge beam measurement overheads, which have a negative impact on beam acquisition and tracking. In addition, the beam management process is also complexly affected by mmWave/THz channel fluctuations, random user movement patterns, and dynamic environmental changes. The paper points out that in order to realize 6G mmWave and THz communications, the attention of the research and industrial communities to artificial intelligence (AI), reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), and integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has increased significantly. The introduction of these enabling technologies brings new opportunities and unique challenges to beam management. Therefore, the paper aims to comprehensively review the research progress of mmWave and THz beam management and provide some insights into technical challenges and future research directions. ### Main problems 1. **Beam management challenges at high frequencies**: - **Beam measurement overhead**: The narrow beams in high - frequency bands lead to huge beam measurement overheads, affecting the efficiency of beam acquisition and tracking. - **Channel fluctuations**: The volatility of mmWave/THz channels increases the complexity of beam management. - **User movement and environmental changes**: The random movement patterns of users and the dynamic changes of the environment further complicate the beam management process. 2. **Application of new technologies**: - **Artificial intelligence (AI)**: AI can quickly adjust beam parameters, improving the accuracy and efficiency of beam management. - **Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)**: RIS can intelligently reshape the propagation environment, alleviating signal and channel blocking problems. - **Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC)**: ISAC performs sensing and communication through a unified interface, improving the ability of control operations to depend on context information. ### Research objectives - **Review existing technologies**: Comprehensively review existing mmWave and Thz beam management technologies, especially the applications of AI, RIS, and ISAC in these technologies. - **Analyze unresolved challenges**: Explore the unresolved challenges and open research directions in current beam management. - **Propose future research directions**: Based on existing research, propose possible future research directions, especially in multi - agent cooperation, predictive beam management, and beam management in RIS - assisted systems. ### Conclusion By analyzing in detail the existing beam management technologies and the applications of emerging technologies, the paper provides readers with a comprehensive review. This not only helps to understand the current technological progress but also points out the direction for future 6G beam management research.
