Abstract:The Collatz conjecture is explored using polynomials based on a binary numeral system. It is shown that the degree of the polynomials, on average, decreases after a finite number of steps of the Collatz operation, which provides a weak proof of the conjecture by using induction with respect to the degree of the polynomials.

Abstract:We study the stopping time of the Collatz map for a polynomial $f \in \mathbb{F}_2[x]$, and bound it by $O({\rm deg} (f)^{1.5})$, improving upon the quadratic bound proven by Hicks, Mullen, Yucas and Zavislak. We also prove the existence arithmetic sequences of unbounded length in the stopping times of certain sequences of polynomials, a phenomenon observed in the classical Collatz map.

Abstract:We introduce a full binary directed tree structure to represent the set of natural numbers, further categorizing them into three distinct subsets: pure odd numbers, pure even numbers, and mixed numbers. We adopt a binary string representation for natural numbers and elaborate on the composite methodology encompassing odd- and even-number functions. Our analysis focuses on examining the iteration sequence (or composition) of the Collatz function and its reduced variant, which serves as an analog to the inverse function, to scrutinize the validity of the Collatz conjecture. To substantiate this conjecture, we incorporate binary strings into an algebraic formula that captures the essence of the Collatz sequence. By this means, we transform discrete powers of 2 into continuous counterparts, ultimately culminating in the smallest natural number, 1. Consequently, the sequence generated through infinite iterations of the Collatz function emerges as an eventually periodic sequence, thereby validating an enduring 87-year-old conjecture.

Abstract:The celebrated $3x+1$ problem is reformulated via the use of an analytic expression of the trailing zeros sequence resulting in a single branch formula $f(x)+1$ with a unique fixed point. The resultant formula $f(x)$ is also found to coincide with that of the discrete derivative of the sorted sequence of fixed points of the reflection operator on even binary palindromes of fixed even length \textit{2k} in any interval $[0\cdots2^{2k}-1]$. A set of equivalent reformulations of the problem are also presented.

Abstract:In this article, we reduce the unsolved problem of convergence of Collatz sequences to convergence of Collatz sequences of odd numbers that are divisible by 3. We give an elementary proof of the fact that a Collatz sequence does not increase monotonically. We define a unique reverse Collatz sequence and conjecture that this sequence always converges to a multiple of $3$.

Abstract:We represent the generalized Collatz function with the recursive ruler function r(2n) = r(n) + 1 and r(2n + 1) = 1. We generate even-only and odd-only Collatz subsequences that contain significantly fewer elements term by term, to 2 and 1, respectively, than are present in the original 3n + 1 and the Terras-modified Collatz sequences. We show that a nonlinear, coupled system of difference equations yields a complete acyclic (except for the trivial cycle) Collatz tree in odds not divisible by 3 with root vertex 1. We construct a complete Collatz tree with the axiom of choice and prove the Collatz conjecture.

An Automated Approach to the Collatz Conjecture

Abstract:We explore the Collatz conjecture and its variants through the lens of termination of string rewriting. We construct a rewriting system that simulates the iterated application of the Collatz function on strings corresponding to mixed binary-ternary representations of positive integers. We prove that the termination of this rewriting system is equivalent to the Collatz conjecture. We also prove that a previously studied rewriting system that simulates the Collatz function using unary representations does not admit termination proofs via natural matrix interpretations, even when used in conjunction with dependency pairs. To show the feasibility of our approach in proving mathematically interesting statements, we implement a minimal termination prover that uses natural/arctic matrix interpretations and we find automated proofs of nontrivial weakenings of the Collatz conjecture. Although we do not succeed in proving the Collatz conjecture, we believe that the ideas here represent an interesting new approach.

Abstract:In a straightforward proof by induction of the Collatz conjecture, it is easy to show that the statement is true for n=1 (the base case) but proving the induction step is more challenging—in fact, no one has done so to date. In this work, a different induction proof of the conjecture, based on a binary representation of the starting integer, is given in which it is possible to prove the induction step but there is no known proof for the base case. In fact, if one could prove the base case, then the Collatz conjecture is true.

Abstract:In a previous article, we reduced the unsolved problem of the convergence of Collatz sequences, to convergence of Collatz sequences of odd numbers, that are divisible by 3. In this article, we further reduce this set to odd numbers that are congruent to 21 mod 24. We also show that either the Collatz sequence of a given odd number or an equivalent Collatz sequence reverses to a multiple of 3. Moreover, we construct a network composed of Collatz sequences of all odd numbers.

Abstract:We begin by considering a sequence of polynomials in three variables whose coefficients count restricted binary overpartitions with certain properties. We then concentrate on two specific subsequences that are closely related to the Chebyshev polynomials of both kinds, deriving combinatorial and algebraic properties of some special cases. We show that the zeros of these polynomial sequences lie on certain algebraic curves, some of which we study in greater detail. Finally, we extend part of this work to restricted $b$-ary overpartitions for arbitrary integers $b\geq 2$.
