Abstract:We establish several new fractal and number theoretical phenomena connected with expansions which are generated by infinite linear iterated function systems. First of all we show that the systems $\Phi$ of cylinders of generalized Lüroth expansions are, generally speaking, not faithful for the Hausdorff dimension calculation. Using Yuval Peres' approach, we prove sufficient conditions for the non-faithfulness of such families of cylinders. On the other hand, rather general sufficient conditions for the faithfulness of such covering systems are also found. As a corollary of our main results, we obtain the non-faithfullness of the family of cylinders generated by the classical Lüroth expansion. Possible infinite entropy of the stochastic vector $Q_\infty$ which determines the metric relations for partitions of the generalized Lüroth expansions, possible non-faithfulness of the family $\Phi(Q_\infty)$ and the absence of general formulae for the calculation of the Hausdorff dimension even for probability measures with independent identically distributed symbols of generalized Lüroth expansions are all facts that do not allow to apply usual probabilistic methods, as well as methods of dynamical systems to study fractal properties of corresponding subsets of non-normal numbers. Despite of the above mentioned difficulties, we develop new approach to the study of subsets of $Q_\infty$-essentially non-normal numbers and prove (without any additional restrictions on the stochastic vector $Q_{\infty}$) that this set is superfractal. This result answers the open problem mentioned in \cite{AKNT2} and completes the metric, dimensional and topological classification of real numbers via the asymptotic behaviour of frequencies their digits in the generalized Lüroth expansion.

Spectral analysis on infinite Sierpinski fractafolds

Abstract:A fractafold, a space that is locally modeled on a specified fractal, is the fractal equivalent of a manifold. For compact fractafolds based on the Sierpinski gasket, it was shown by the first author how to compute the discrete spectrum of the Laplacian in terms of the spectrum of a finite graph Laplacian. A similar problem was solved by the second author for the case of infinite blowups of a Sierpinski gasket, where spectrum is pure point of infinite multiplicity. Both works used the method of spectral decimations to obtain explicit description of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. In this paper we combine the ideas from these earlier works to obtain a description of the spectral resolution of the Laplacian for noncompact fractafolds. Our main abstract results enable us to obtain a completely explicit description of the spectral resolution of the fractafold Laplacian. For some specific examples we turn the spectral resolution into a "Plancherel formula". We also present such a formula for the graph Laplacian on the 3-regular tree, which appears to be a new result of independent interest. In the end we discuss periodic fractafolds and fractal fields.

Spectral Asymptotics for $V$-variable Sierpinski Gaskets

Abstract:The family of $V$-variable fractals provides a means of interpolating between two families of random fractals previously considered in the literature; scale irregular fractals ($V=1$) and random recursive fractals ($V=\infty$). We consider a class of $V$-variable affine nested fractals based on the Sierpinski gasket with a general class of measures. We calculate the spectral exponent for a general measure and find the spectral dimension for these fractals. We show that the spectral properties and on-diagonal heat kernel estimates for $V$-variable fractals are closer to those of scale irregular fractals, in that it is the fluctuations in scale that determine their behaviour but that there are also effects of the spatial variability.

Abstract:Electronic states play a crucial role in many quantum systems of moir & eacute; superlattices, quasicrystals, and fractals. As recently reported for Sierpi & nacute;ski lattices [Yao et al., Phys. Rev. B 107, 115424 (2023)], the critical states are revealed by the energy-level-correlation spectra, which are caused by the interplay between aperiodicity and determined self-similarity characters. In the case of the Sierpi & nacute;ski carpet, our results further demonstrate that there is some degree of spatial overlap between these electronic states. These states could be strongly affected by the "seed lattice" of the generator and slightly modulated by the dilation pattern and the geometrical self-similarity level. These electronic states are made multifractal by scaling the qth-order inverse participation ratio or fractal dimension, which correlates with the subdiffusion behavior. In the gene pattern, an average state-based multifractal dimension of second order would increase as its Hausdorff dimension increases. Our findings could potentially contribute to understanding quantum transports and single-particle quantum dynamics in fractals.

In this paper, we estimate the oscillation of harmonic functions on the [math]-dimensional Sierpiński gasket [math], where [math] is the classical Sierpiński gasket. By using this result, we prove that both the box dimension and the Hausdorff dimension of graphs of harmonic functions on [math] are [math].

Abstract:We construct covering maps from infinite blowups of the n-dimensional Sierpinski gasket SG(n) to certain compact fractafolds based on SG(n). These maps are fractal analogs of the usual covering maps from the line to the circle. The construction extends work of the second author in the case n = 2, but a different method of proof is needed, which amounts to solving a Sudoku-type puzzle. We can use the covering maps to define the notion of periodic function on the blowups. We give a characterization of these periodic functions and describe the analog of Fourier series expansions. We study covering maps onto quotient fractalfolds. Finally, we show that such covering maps fail to exist for many other highly symmetric fractals.

Abstract:In this article, our aim is to estimate the fractal dimensions of the graphs of fractal interpolation functions (FIFs) on the product of two Sierpiński gaskets. To achieve this, we employ the Hölder function spaces. We also define a fractal operator on Hölder spaces originated from the FIFs and establish some operator-theoretic properties such as bounded below and invariant subspaces of it. Additionally, we provide bounds on the Hausdorff dimensions of the invariant measures that are supported on the graphs of these FIFs.

Abstract:In this study, we examine the statistics of level spectra in a noninteracting electron gas confined to a Sierpinski carpet lattice. These lattices are constructed using two types of the self and gene patterns, and they are categorized by the area-perimeter scaling law. The singularly continuous spectra, along with the nearest level spacing distribution and gap-ratio distribution, reveal a critical phase different from both extended and localized phases. This critical phase differs from the behavior near the Anderson model's metal-insulator transition. The Wigner-like conjecture is confirmed for both lattice classes, indicating Gaussian orthogonal symmetry. A similar observation was made in a quasiperiodic lattice [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 3996 (1998)]. The self-similar nature of fractals also leads to level clustering behavior.

Abstract:We introduce iterated graph systems which yield fractal spaces through a projective sequence of self-similar graphs. Our construction yields new examples of self-similar fractals, such as the pentagonal Sierpiński carpet and a pillow-space, and it yields a new framework to study potential theory on many standard examples in the literature, including generalized Sierpiński carpets. We demonstrate that a fractal arising from an iterated graph system satisfying mild geometric conditions and having enough reflection symmetries, satisfies the combinatorial Loewner property (CLP) of Bourdon and Kleiner. For certain exponents, one can also obtain the conductive homogeneity condition of Kigami. This shows, in a precise sense, that self-similarity and sufficient symmetry yields CLP. Furthermore, we show that our examples satisfy important asymptotic behaviors of discrete moduli. In particular, we establish the so-called super-multiplicative inequality for our examples - which when $p=2$ plays a crucial role in the study of Dirichlet forms and random walks on fractals. This implies the super-multiplicativity bound also for many fractals for which it was not known before, such as the Menger sponge. A particular feature here is using replacement flows and the notion of a flow basis. This yields a simpler way to establish many known estimates, and allows us to prove several new ones. Further, super-multiplicativity shows that one can effectively estimate the conformal dimensions numerically for many self-similar fractals.

Abstract:In this article, we study the energy spectrum of fractals which has block-hierarchical structure. We develop a method to study the spectral properties in terms of linearization of spectral decimation procedure and verify it numerically by calculation of level-spacing distributions. Our approach provides qualitative explanation for various spectral properties of self-similar graphs within the theory of dynamical systems, including the power-law level-spacing distribution, smooth density of states, and effective chaotic regime.

Abstract:Although the “hot spots” conjecture was proved to be false on some classical domains, the problem still generates a lot of interests on identifying the domains that the conjecture hold. The question can also be asked on fractal sets that admit Laplacians. It is known that the conjecture holds on the Sierpinski gasket and its variants. In this note, we show surprisingly that the “hot spots” conjecture fails on the hexagasket, a typical nested fractal set. The technique we use is the spectral decimation method of eigenvalues of Laplacian on fractals.

Abstract:Given a nondegenerate harmonic structure, we prove a Poincaré-type inequality for functions in the domain of the Dirichlet form on nested fractals. We then study the Hajlasz-Sobolev spaces on nested fractals. In particular, we describe how the "weak"-type gradient on nested fractals relates to the upper gradient defined in the context of general metric spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, we first characterize the finiteness of fractal interpolation functions (FIFs) on post critical finite self-similar sets. Then we study the Laplacian of FIFs with uniform vertical scaling factors on Sierpinski gasket (SG). As an application, we prove that the solution of the following Dirichlet problem on SG is an FIF with uniform vertical scaling factor $\frac{1}{5}$: $\Delta u=0$ on $SG\setminus \{q_1,q_2,q_3\}$, and $u(q_i)=a_i$, $i=1,2,3$, where $q_i$, $i=1,2,3$, are boundary points of SG.

Abstract:We propose a scheme to derive the spectral dimension of inhomogeneous fractal lattice via renormalization procedure, in which the distribution of masses on the sites of fractals is introduced. The spectral dimension of diamond-type hierarchical lattice and Sierpinski gasket with are re-investigated in this way. Moreover, the variants of Sierpinski gasket-type fractals are studied, the results show that the spectral dimension is independent of the details of internal structure of fractal, and thus implies the existence of universality. The source of the universality is also analyzed.

Abstract:The present research will concentrate on the topic of Fourier analysis on fractals. It mainly deals with the problem of determining spectral self-affine measures on the typical fractals: the planar Sierpinski family. The previous researches on this subject have led to the problem within the possible fifteen cases. We shall show that among the fifteen cases, the nine cases correspond to the spectral measures, and reduce the remnant six cases to the three cases. Thus, for a large class of such measures, their spectrality and non-spectrality are clear. Moreover, an explicit formula for the existent spectrum of a spectral measure is obtained. We also give a concluding remark on the remnant three cases.

Abstract:In this article we investigate the energy spectrum statistics of fractals at the quantum level. We show that the energy-level distribution of a fractal follows a power-law behaviour, if its energy spectrum is a limit set of piece-wise linear functions. We propose that such a behaviour is a general feature of fractals, which can not be described properly by random matrix theory. Several other arguments for the power-law behaviour of the energy level-spacing distributions are proposed.

Abstract:We study the spectral dimensions of Krein-Feller operators for arbitrary for arbitrary finite Borel measures $\nu$ on the $d$-dimensional unit cube ($d\geq2$) via a form approach. We make use of the spectral partition function of $\nu$ as introduced in [Kesseböhmer and Niemann, Exact asymptotic order for adaptive approximations. 2023, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2312.16644" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2312.16644">arXiv:2312.16644</a>] and, assuming that the lower $\infty$-dimension of $\nu$ exceeds $d-2$, we identify the upper Neumann spectral dimension as the unique zero of the spectral partition function, thus revealing the intrinsic connection of these spectral and fractal-geometric quantities. We show that if the lower $\infty$-dimension of $\nu$ is strictly less than $d-2$, the form approach breaks down. Examples are given for the critical case, that is the lower $\infty$-dimension of $\nu$ equals $d-2$. We provide additional regularity assumptions on the spectral partition function, guaranteeing that the Neumann spectral dimension exists and coincides with the Dirichlet spectral dimension. Several prominent examples previously treated in the literature are provided, namely absolutely continuous measures and more generally Ahlfors-David regular measures, and examples not previously treated in the literature, namely self-conformal measures with or without overlaps, for which we show that both the Dirichlet and Neumann spectral dimensions exist and how they can be obtained from the $L^{q}$-spectrum of the measures. We demonstrate how our approach can be used to obtain upper and lower asymptotic spectral bounds for the case of Ahlfors-David regular measures. Moreover, we provide sharp bounds for the upper Neumann spectral dimension in terms of the upper Minkowski dimension of the support of $\nu$ and its lower $\infty$-dimension. Finally, we give an example for which the spectral dimension does not exist.

Abstract:The spectral zeta function of the Laplacian on self-similar fractal sets has been previously studied and shown to meromorphically extend to the complex plane. In this work we establish that under certain conditions a relationship exists between the logarithm of the determinant of the discrete graph Laplacian on the sequence of graphs approximating the fractal and the regularized Laplacian determinant on the fractal itself which is defined via help of the spectral zeta function. We then at the end present some concrete examples of this phenomenon.

Anomalous quantum transport in fractal lattices

Abstract:Fractal lattices are self-similar structures with repeated patterns on different scales. As in other aperiodic lattices, the absence of translational symmetry can give rise to quantum localization effects. In contrast to low-dimensional disordered systems, co-existence of localized and extended states is possible in fractal structures, and can lead to subtle transport behavior. Here, we study the dynamical properties of two fractal lattices, the Sierpiński gasket and the Sierpiński carpet. Despite their geometric similarity, the transport turns out to behave very differently: In the Sierpiński gasket, we find a sub-diffusive behavior, whereas the Sierpiński carpet exhibits sub-ballistic transport properties. We show that the different dynamical behavior is in line with qualitative differences of the systems' spectral properties. Specifically, in contrast to the Sierpiński carpet, the Sierpiński gasket exhibits an inverse power-law behavior of the level spacing distribution. From the point of view of technological applications, we demonstrate that the sub-diffusive behavior in the Sierpiński gasket can be used as a quantum memory. By interpolating between fractal and regular lattices, a flexible tuning between different transport regimes becomes possible.
