Abstract:We show that the higher Pythagoras numbers for the polynomial ring are infinite $p_{2s}(K[x_1,x_2,\dots,x_n])=\infty$ provided that $K$ is a formally real field, $n\geq2$ and $s\geq 1$. This almost fully solves an old question \cite[Problem 8]{cldr1982}. The remaining open cases are precisely $n=1$ and $s>1$. Moreover, we study in detail the cone of binary octics that are sums of fourth powers of quadratic forms. We determine its facial structure as well as its algebraic boundary. This can also be seen as sums of fourth powers of linear forms on the second Veronese of $\mathbb{P}^1$. As a result, we disprove a conjecture of Reznick \cite[Conjecture 7.1]{reznick2011} which states that if a binary form $f$ is a sum of fourth powers, then it can be written as $f=f_1^2+f_2^2$ for some nonnegative forms $f_1,f_2$.

Abstract:We give upper bounds for the level and the Pythagoras number of function fields over fraction fields of integral Henselian excellent local rings. In particular, we show that the Pythagoras number of $\mathbb{R}((x_1,\dots,x_n))$ is $\leq 2^{n-1}$, which answers positively a question of Choi, Dai, Lam and Reznick.

Abstract:An immersed hypersurface in the Euclidean space Rn+1 satisfying the equation H =-XN + λ is called a λ-hypersurface.In this paper,we investigate the second pinching problem for λ-hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space.Let M be an n-dimensional complete λ-hypersurface in Rn+1 with polynomial volume growth.Denote by A the second fundamental form of M.We verify that there exists a positive absolute constant γsuch that if |λ| ≤ γ,βλ ≤ |A|2 ≤βλ +1/21,whereβλ 1/2 (2 + λ2 + |λ|√λ2+ 4),then |A|2 =βλ,λ ≥ 0,and M is either the sphere Sn (√n),the cylinder Sk (√k) × Rn-k,1 ≤ k ≤ n-1,or the cylinder S(λ2+4-|λ|) Rn-1.

Abstract:We prove that every sum of squares in the rational function field in two variables $K(X,Y)$ over a hereditarily pythagorean field $K$ is a sum of $8$ squares. More precisely, we show that the Pythagoras number of every finite extension of $K(X)$ is at most $5$. The main ingredients of the proof are a local-global principle for quadratic forms over function fields in one variable over a complete rank-$1$ valued field due to V. Mehmeti and a valuation theoretic characterization of hereditarily pythagorean fields due to L. Bröcker.

Abstract:Let $C$ be an irreducible nonsingular curve over a formally real field $K$ and let $f$ be a regular function which is a sum of squares in the ring of regular functions of the surface $C \times \mathbb{A}_K$. We show that the (sum of squares) length of $f$ is the same in the ring of regular functions of $C \times \mathbb{A}_K$ and in the field of rational functions of $C \times \mathbb{A}_K$. With this we are able to show that the Pythagoras number of the ring of regular functions is the same as the Pythagoras number of the field of rational functions, for some product algebraic surfaces. This shows that the Pythagoras number of the ring of regular functions of the real plane is 4, which was not known before.

Abstract:The problem of characterizing a real polynomial $f$ as a sum of squares of polynomials on a real algebraic variety $V$ dates back to the pioneering work of Hilbert in [Mathematische Annalen 32.3 (1888): 342-350]. In this paper, we investigate this problem with a focus on cases where the real zeros of $f$ on $V$ are singular points of $V$. By using optimality conditions and irreducible decomposition, we provide a positive answer to the following essential question of polynomial optimization: Are there always exact semidefinite programs to compute the minimum value attained by a given polynomial over a given real algebraic variety? Our answer implies that Lasserre's hierarchy, which is known as a bridge between convex and non-convex programs with algebraic structures, has finite convergence not only in the generic case but also in the general case. As a result, we constructively prove that each hyperbolic program is equivalent to a semidefinite program.

The Square-Root Law Does Not Hold in the Presence of Zero Divisors

Abstract:Let $R$ be a finite ring and define the paraboloid $P = \{(x_1, \dots, x_d)\in R^d|x_d = x_1^2 + \dots + x_{d-1}^2\}.$ Suppose that for a sequence of finite rings of size tending to infinity, the Fourier transform of $P$ satisfies a square-root law for some fixed constant $C$. Then all but finitely many of the rings are fields. Most of our argument works in greater generality: let $f$ be a polynomial with integer coefficients in $d-1$ variables, with a fixed order of variable multiplications (so that it defines a function $R^{d-1}\rightarrow R$ even when $R$ is noncommutative), and set $V_f = \{(x_1, \dots, x_d)\in R^d|x_d = f(x_1, \dots, x_{d-1})\}$. If (for a sequence of finite rings of size tending to infinity) we have a square root law for the Fourier transform of $V_f$, then all but finitely many of the rings are fields or matrix rings of small dimension. We also describe how our techniques let us see that certain varieties do not satisfy a square root law even over finite fields.

Abstract:We consider sums of squares operators globally defined on the torus. We show that if some assumptions are satisfied the operators are globally analytic hypoelliptic. The purpose of the assumptions is to rule out the existence of a Hamilton leaf on the characteristic variety lying along the fiber of the cotangent bundle, i.e. the case of the (global) Métivier operator.

Abstract:A smooth hypersurface over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ is called Frobenius nonclassical if the image of every geometric point under the $q$-th Frobenius endomorphism remains in the unique hyperplane tangent to the point. In this paper, we establish sharp lower and upper bounds for the degrees of such hypersurfaces, give characterizations for those achieving the maximal degrees, and prove in the surface case that they are Hermitian when their degrees attain the minimum. We also prove that the set of $\mathbb{F}_q$-rational points on a Frobenius nonclassical hypersurface form a blocking set with respect to lines, which indicates the existence of many $\mathbb{F}_q$-points.

Abstract:We generalize techniques by Coskun, Riedl, and Yeong, and obtain an almost optimal bound on the degree for the algebraic hyperbolicity of very general hypersurfaces in homogeneous varieties. As examples, we work out the cases of very general hypersurfaces in products of Grassmannians, orthogonal and symplectic Grassmannians, and flag varieties.

Abstract:We prove non-hyperbolicity of primitive symplectic varieties with $b_2 \geq 5$ that satisfy the rational SYZ conjecture. If in addition $b_2 \geq 7$, we establish that the Kobayashi pseudometric vanishes identically. This in particular applies to all currently known examples of irreducible symplectic manifolds and thereby completes the results by Kamenova--Lu--Verbitsky. The key new contribution is that a projective primitive symplectic variety with a Lagrangian fibration has vanishing Kobayashi pseudometric. The proof uses ergodicity, birational contractions, and cycle spaces.

Abstract:We show that a certain two-dimensional family of Weyl sums of length $P$ takes values as large as $P^{3/4 + o(1)}$ on almost all linear slices of the unit torus, contradicting a widely held expectation that Weyl sums should exhibit square-root cancellation on generic subvarieties of the unit torus. This is an extension of a result of J. Brandes, S. T. Parsell, C. Poulias, G. Shakan and R. C. Vaughan (2020) from quadratic and cubic monomials to general polynomials of arbitrary degree. The new ingredients of our approach are the classical results of E. Bombieri (1966) on exponential sums along a curve and R. J. Duffin and A. C. Schaeffer (1941) on Diophantine approximations by rational numbers with prime denominators.

Abstract:Let $h_n(v)$ be the sequence of rational functions with $$ \frac{h_n(v)}{v}-nh_n(v)+(n-1)h_{n-1}(v)-vh_{n-1}'(v)+\frac{v(v(vh_{n-1}(v))')'}{4}=0 $$ for $n>0$ and $h_0(v)=1$. We prove that $h_n(v)$ has a pole at $v=\frac{1}{n}$ if and only if $n$ is a sum of two squares of integers. Moreover, if $r_2(n)=\#\{(a,b)\in \mathbb Z^2: a^2+b^2=n\}$, then we derive the formula $$ \underset{v=1/n}{\mathrm{Res}}h_n(v)=\frac{(-1)^{n-1}r_2(n)}{n16^n}. $$ The results are then generalized to arbitrary modular forms with respect to $\Gamma(2)$ and as a consequence we obtain a new criterion for Lehmer's conjecture for Ramanujan's $\tau$-function.

Abstract:The aim of this note is to exploit a new relationship between additive combinatorics and the geometry of monomial projective curves. We associate to a finite set of non-negative integers a monomial projective curve such that the Hilbert function of and the cardinalities of agree. The singularities of determines the asymptotic behaviour of | sA |, equivalently the Hilbert polynomial of , and the asymptotic structure of sA . We show that some additive inverse problems can be translate to the rigidity of Hilbert polynomials and we improve an upper bound of the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of monomial projective curves by using results of additive combinatorics.

Abstract:We compare several different methods involving Hodge-theoretic spectra of singularities which produce constraints on the number and type of isolated singularities on projective hypersurfaces of fixed degree. In particular, we introduce a method based on the spectrum of the nonisolated singularity at the origin of the affine cone on such a hypersurface, and relate the resulting explicit formula to Varchenko's bound.

Abstract:For a given irreducible and monic polynomial $f(x) \in \mathbb{Z}[x]$ of degree $4$, we consider the quadratic twists by square-free integers $q$ of the genus one quartic ${H\, :\, y^2=f(x)}$ \[ H_q \, :\, qy^2=f(x). \] We say that a curve $C$ is everywhere locally soluble (ELS) if it has a solution in $\mathbb{R}$ and in $\mathbb{Q}_p$ for every prime $p$ (i.e. if $C(\mathbb{R})\neq \emptyset$ and $C(\mathbb{Q}_p)\neq \emptyset$ for all primes $p$). Let $L=\{q\in \mathbb{N} :\, q \text{ is square-free and } H_q \text{ is ELS}\}$ denote the set of positive square-free integers $q$ for which $H_q$ is everywhere locally soluble. For a real number $x$ let ${L(x)= \#\{q\in L:\, q<x\}}$ be the number of elements in $L$ that are less then $x$. Furthermore, let us denote with \[ F(s)=\sum_{n \in L} \frac{1}{n^s} \] the corresponding Dirichlet's series of the set $L$. In this paper, we obtain that \[ L(x) = c_f \frac{x}{(\ln{x})^{m}}+O\left(\frac{x}{(\ln{x})^\alpha}\right) \] for some constants $c_f$, $m$ and $\alpha$ only depending on $f$ such that $m<\alpha \leq 1+m$. The Shafarevich conjecture for hypersurfaces in abelian varieties

Abstract:Faltings proved that there are finitely many abelian varieties of genus $g$ over a number field $K$, with good reduction outside a finite set of primes $S$. Fixing one of these abelian varieties $A$, we prove that there are finitely many smooth hypersurfaces in $A$, with good reduction outside $S$, representing a given ample class in the Néron-Severi group of $A$, up to translation, as long as the dimension of $A$ is at least $4$. Our approach builds on the approach of arXiv:1807.02721 which studies $p$-adic variations of Hodge structure to turn finiteness results for $p$-adic Galois representations into geometric finiteness statements. A key new ingredient is an approach to proving big monodromy for the variations of Hodge structure arising from the middle cohomology of these hypersurfaces using the Tannakian theory of sheaf convolution on abelian varieties.
