Abstract:In this note we will determine which contact structures on manifolds obtained by certain surgeries on the right handed trefoil are Stein fillable and which are not. This continues a long line of research and shows that there seems to be few underlying patterns to when a contact structure is Stein fillable or not.

Abstract:In this note, we classify Stein fillings of an infinite family of contact 3-manifolds up to diffeomorphism. Some contact 3-manifolds in this family can be obtained by Legendrian surgeries on $(S^3,\xi_{std})$ along certain Legendrian 2-bridge knots. We also classify Stein fillings, up to symplectic deformation, of an infinite family of contact 3-manifolds which can be obtained by Legendrian surgeries on $(S^3,\xi_{std})$ along certain Legendrian twist knots. As a corollary, we obtain a classification of Stein fillings of an infinite family of contact hyperbolic 3-manifolds up to symplectic deformation.

Abstract:We consider the question of when the operation of contact surgery with positive surgery coefficient, along a knot $K$ in a contact 3-manifold $Y$, gives rise to a weakly fillable contact structure. We show that this happens if and only if $Y$ itself is weakly fillable, and $K$ is isotopic to the boundary of a properly embedded symplectic disk inside a filling of $Y$. Moreover, if $Y'$ is a contact manifold arising from positive contact surgery along $K$, then any filling of $Y'$ is symplectomorphic to the complement of a suitable neighborhood of such a disk in a filling of $Y$. Using this result we deduce several necessary conditions for a knot in the standard 3-sphere to admit a fillable positive surgery, such as quasipositivity and equality between the slice genus and the 4-dimensional clasp number, and we give a characterization of such knots in terms of a quasipositive braid expression. We show that knots arising as the closure of a positive braid always admit a fillable positive surgery, as do knots that have lens space surgeries, and suitable satellites of such knots. In fact the majority of quasipositive knots with up to 10 crossings admit a fillable positive surgery. On the other hand, in general (strong) quasipositivity, positivity, or Lagrangian fillability need not imply a knot admits a fillable positive contact surgery.

Abstract: In the first part of this paper, we construct infinitely many hyperbolic closed 3-manifolds which admit no symplectic fillable contact structure. All these 3-manifolds are obtained by Dehn surgeries along L-space knots or L-space two-component links. In the second part of this paper, we show that Dehn surgeries along certain knots and links, including those considered in the first part, admit Stein fillable contact structures as long as the surgery coefficients are sufficiently large.

Abstract:We define relative Gromov-Witten invariants and establish a general gluing theory of pseudo-holomorphic curves for symplectic cutting and contact surgery. Then, we use our general gluing theory to study the change of GW-invariants of Calabi-Yau 3-folds tranform under flops and extremal transitions. We prove a complete formula for the change of GW-invariants of any genus transform under flop and a general type I extremal transition. Other extremal transition will be handled in a subsequent paper.
A note on Stein fillability of circle bundles over symplectic manifolds

Abstract:We show that, given a closed integral symplectic manifold $(\Sigma, \omega)$ of dimension $2n \geq 4$, for every integer $k>\int_{\Sigma}\omega^{n}$, the Boothby-Wang bundle over $(\Sigma, k\omega)$ carries no Stein fillable contact structure. This negatively answers a question raised by Eliashberg. A similar result holds for Boothby-Wang orbibundles. As an application, we prove the non-smoothability of some isolated singularities.

Stein fillings vs. Milnor fibers

Abstract:Given a link of a normal surface singularity with its canonical contact structure, we compare the collection of its Stein fillings to its Milnor fillings (that is, Milnor fibers of possible smoothings). We prove that, unlike Stein fillings, Milnor fillings of a given link have bounded topology; for links of sandwiched singularities, we further establish that there are only finitely many Milnor fillings. We discuss some other obstructions for a Stein filling to be represented by a Milnor fiber, and for various types of singularities, including simple classes like cusps and triangle singularities, we produce Stein fillings that do not come from Milnor fibers or resolutions. Meanwhile, we discover that there are many contact 3-manifolds that admit infinitely many Stein fillings but do not admit arbitrarily large ones.

Abstract:We apply Menke's JSJ decomposition for symplectic fillings to several families of contact 3-manifolds. Among other results, we complete the classification up to orientation-preserving diffeomorphism of strong symplectic fillings of lens spaces. We show that exact symplectic fillings of contact manifolds obtained by surgery on certain Legendrian negative cables are the result of attaching a Weinstein 2-handle to an exact filling of a lens space. For large families of contact structures on Seifert fibered spaces over S^2, we reduce the problem of classifying exact symplectic structures to the same problem for universally tight or canonical contact structures. Finally, virtually overtwisted circle bundles over surfaces with genus greater than one and negative twisting number are seen to have unique exact fillings.

Abstract:Infinitely many contact 3-manifolds each admitting infinitely many, pairwise non-diffeomorphic Stein fillings are constructed. We use Lefschetz fibrations in our constructions and compute their first homologies to distinguish the fillings.

Abstract:We introduce a symplectic surgery in six dimensions which collapses Lagrangian three-spheres and replaces them by symplectic two-spheres. Under mirror symmetry it corresponds to an operation on complex Molds studied by Clemens, Friedman and Tian. We describe several examples which show that there are either many more Calabi-Yau manifolds (e.g., rigid ones) than previously thought or there exist "symplectic Calabi-Yaus" - non-Kahler symplectic 6-folds with c(1) = 0. The analogous surgery in four dimensions, with a generalisation to ADE-trees of Lagrangians, implies that the canonical class of a minimal complex surface contains symplectic forms if and only if it has positive square.

Abstract:In this note we show that $+1$-contact surgery on distinct Legendrian knots frequently produces contactomorphic manifolds. We also give examples where this happens for $-1$-contact surgery. As an amusing corollary we find overtwisted contact structures that contain a large number of distinct Legendrian knots with the same classical invariants and tight complements.

Abstract:In this paper, we study strong symplectic fillability and Stein fillability of some tight contact structures on negative parabolic and negative hyperbolic torus bundles over the circle. For the universally tight contact structure with twisting $\pi $ in $S^1$-direction on a negative parabolic torus bundle, we completely determine its strong symplectic fillability and Stein fillability. For the universally tight contact structure with twisting $\pi $ in $S^1$-direction on a negative hyperbolic torus bundle, we give a necessary condition for it being strongly symplectically fillable. For the virtually overtwisted tight contact structure on the negative parabolic torus bundle with monodromy $-\,T^n$ ($n<0$), we prove that it is Stein fillable. In addition, we give a partial answer to a conjecture of Golla and Lisca.
Fillability obstructions for high-dimensional confoliations

Abstract:In this paper, we study confoliations in dimensions higher than three mostly from the perspective of symplectic fillability. Our main result is that Massot-Niederkrüger-Wendl's bordered Legendrian open book, an object that obstructs the weak symplectic fillability of contact manifolds, admits a generalization for confoliations equipped with symplectic data. Applications include the non-fillability of the product of an overtwisted contact manifold and a class of symplectic manifolds, and the fact that Bourgeois contact structures associated with overtwisted contact manifolds admit no weak symplectic fillings for which the symplectic structure restricts at the boundary to a positive generator of the second cohomology of the torus factor. In addition, along the lines of the original $3$-dimensional work of Eliashberg and Thurston, we give a new definition of approximation and deformation of confoliations by contact structures and describe some natural examples.

$L$-space knots with positive surgeries that are not weakly symplectically fillable

Abstract:In this paper we discuss a general strategy to detect the absence of weakly symplectic fillings of $L$-spaces. We start from a generic $L$-space knot and consider (positive) Dehn surgeries on it. We compute, using arithmetic data depending only on the knot type and the surgery coefficient, the value of the relevant geometric invariants used to obstruct fillability. We also provide a new example of an infinite family of hyperbolic $L$-spaces that do not admit weakly symplectic fillings. These are manifolds that lie inside $\{\text{Tight}\}$ but not inside $\{\text{Weakly Fillable}\}$.

Abstract: In this paper, we determine the Euler characteristics and signatures of the exact symplectic fillings of the contact double, 3-fold or 4-fold branched covers of the standard contact 3-sphere along certain transverse quasi-positive links. These links include all quasi-positive knots with crossing numbers smaller than 11 and all quasi-positive links with crossing numbers smaller than 12 and nonzero nullity.

Abstract:We prove the uniqueness, up to diffeomorphism, of symplectically aspherical fillings of the unit cotangent bundle of the $3$-sphere $S^3$ under a certain topological assumption, which Stein fillings automatically satisfy. In the course of the proof, we show that any symplectically aspherical filling of the unit cotangent bundle of the $n$-sphere $S^n$ ($n \geq 3$) is simply-connected. As applications, we first show the non-existence of exact symplectic cobordisms between some $5$-dimensional Brieskorn manifolds. We also determine the diffeomorphism types of closed symplectic $6$-manifolds with certain codimension $2$ symplectic submanifolds.

Abstract:A spinal open book decomposition on a contact manifold is a generalization of a supporting open book which exists naturally e.g. on the boundary of a symplectic filling with a Lefschetz fibration over any compact oriented surface with boundary. In this first paper of a two-part series, we introduce the basic notions relating spinal open books to contact structures and symplectic or Stein structures on Lefschetz fibrations, leading to the definition of a new symplectic cobordism construction called spine removal surgery, which generalizes previous constructions due to Eliashberg, Gay-Stipsicz and the third author. As an application, spine removal yields a large class of new examples of contact manifolds that are not strongly (and sometimes not weakly) symplectically fillable. This paper also lays the geometric groundwork for a theorem to be proved in part II, where holomorphic curves are used to classify the symplectic and Stein fillings of contact 3-manifolds admitting a spinal open book with a planar page.

Abstract:As an example of the transitions between some of the eight geometries of Thurston, investigated before, we study the geometries supported by the cone-manifolds obtained by surgery on the trefoil knot with singular set the core of the surgery. The geometric structures are explicitly constructed. The most interesting phenomenon is the transition from $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$-geometry to $S^{3}$-geometry through Nil-geometry. A plot of the different geometries is given, in the spirit of the analogous plot of Thurston for the geometries supported by surgeries on the figure-eight knot.
