Abstract:Big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) theory, together with the precise WMAP cosmic baryon density, makes tight predictions for the abundances of the lightest elements. Deuterium and 4He measurements agree well with expectations, but 7Li observations lie a factor 3-4 below the BBN+WMAP prediction. This 4-5\sigma\ mismatch constitutes the cosmic "lithium problem," with disparate solutions possible. (1) Astrophysical systematics in the observations could exist but are increasingly constrained. (2) Nuclear physics experiments provide a wealth of well-measured cross-section data, but 7Be destruction could be enhanced by unknown or poorly-measured resonances, such as 7Be + 3He -> 10C^* -> p + 9B. (3) Physics beyond the Standard Model can alter the 7Li abundance, though D and 4He must remain unperturbed; we discuss such scenarios, highlighting decaying Supersymmetric particles and time-varying fundamental constants. Present and planned experiments could reveal which (if any) of these is the solution to the problem.

New Thermonuclear Rate of 7Li(d,n)24He relevant to the Cosmological Lithium Problem

Abstract:Accurate 7Li(d,n)24He thermonuclear reaction rates are crucial for precise prediction of the primordial abundances of Lithium and Beryllium and to probe the mysteries beyond fundamental physics and the standard cosmological model. However, uncertainties still exist in current reaction rates of 7Li(d,n)24He widely used in Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) simulations. In this work, we reevaluate the 7Li(d,n)24He reaction rate using the latest data on the three near-threshold 9Be excited states from experimental measurements. We present for the first time uncertainties that are directly constrained by experiments. Additionally, we take into account for the first time the contribution from the subthreshold resonance at 16.671 MeV of 9Be. We obtain a 7Li(d,n)24He rate that is overall smaller than the previous estimation by about a factor of 60 at the typical temperature of the onset of primordial nucleosynthesis. We implemented our new rate in BBN nucleosynthesis calculations, and we show that the new rates have a very limited impact on the final light element abundances in uniform density models. Typical abundance variations are in the order of 0.002%. For nonuniform density BBN models, the predicted 7Li production can be increased by 10% and the primordial production of light nuclides with mass number A>7 can be increased by about 40%. Our results confirm that the cosmological lithium problem remains a long-standing unresolved puzzle from the standpoint of nuclear physics.

Abstract:After a brief review of the cosmological lithium problem, we report a few recent attempts to find theoretical solutions by our group at Texas A&M University (Commerce & College Station). We will discuss our studies on the theoretical description of electron screening, the possible existence of parallel universes of dark matter, and the use of non-extensive statistics during the Big Bang nucleosynthesis epoch. Last but not least, we discuss possible solutions within nuclear physics realm. The impact of recent measurements of relevant nuclear reaction cross sections for the Big Bang nucleosynthesis based on indirect methods is also assessed. Although our attempts may not able to explain the observed discrepancies between theory and observations, they suggest theoretical developments that can be useful also for stellar nucleosynthesis.

Cosmological Lithium Solution from Discrete Gauged Baryon Minus Lepton Number

Abstract:The cosmological lithium problem -- that theory predicts a primordial abundance far higher than the observed value -- has resisted decades of attempts by cosmologists, nuclear physicists, and astronomers alike to root out systematics. We reconsider this problem in the setting of the Standard Model extended by gauged baryon minus lepton number, which we spontaneously break by a scalar with charge $2 N_c N_g$. Cosmic strings from this breaking can support interactions converting three protons into three positrons, and we argue that an `electric'-`magnetic' interplay can give this process an amplified, strong-scale cross-section in an analogue of the Callan-Rubakov effect. We suggest such cosmic strings have disintegrated $\mathcal{O}(1)$ of the primordial lithium nuclei, and lay out what is necessary for this scheme to succeed. To our knowledge this is the first new physics mechanism with microphysical justification for the abundance of lithium uniquely to be modified after Big Bang Nucleosynthesis.

Abstract:In the standard Big Bang nucleosynthesis（SBBN） model, the lithium puzzle has attracted intense interest over the past few decades, but still has not been solved. Conventionally, the approach is to include more reactions flowing into or out of lithium, and study the potential effects of those reactions which were not previously considered.~7Be（d,~3He）~6Li is a reaction that not only produces~6Li but also destroys~7Be, which decays to~7Li, thereby affecting~7Li indirectly. Therefore, this reaction could alleviate the lithium discrepancy if its reaction rate is sufficiently high.However, there is not much information available about the~7Be（d,~3He）~6Li reaction rate. In this work, the angular distributions of the~7Be（d,~3He）~6Li reaction are measured at the center of mass energies Ecm = 4.0 Me V and 6.~7Me V with secondary~7Be beams for the first time. The excitation function of the~7Be（d,~3He）~6Li reaction is first calculated with the computer code TALYS and then normalized to the experimental data, then its reaction rate is deduced. A SBBN network calculation is performed to investigate its influence on the~6Li and~7Li abundances. The results show that the~7Be（d,~3He）~6Li reaction has a minimal effect on~6Li and~7Li because of its small reaction rate. Therefore,the~7Be（d,~3He）~6Li reaction is ruled out by this experiment as a means of alleviating the lithium discrepancy.

Abstract:We investigate the modifications to predictions for the abundances of light elements from standard big-bang nucleosynthesis when exotic late-decaying particles with lifetimes exceeding ∼1 sec are prominent in the early Universe. Utilizing a model-independent analysis of the properties of these long-lived particles, we identify the parameter space associated with models that are consistent with all observational data and hence resolve the much discussed discrepancies between observations and theoretical predictions for the abundances of Li7 and Li6.

Abstract:Recent activity in solving the 'lithium problem' in big bang nucleosynthesis has focused on the role that putative resonances may play in resonance-enhanced destruction of 7Li. Particular attention has been paid to the reactions involving the 9B compound nuclear system, d+7Be->9B. These reactions are analyzed via the multichannel, two-body unitary R-matrix method using code (EDA) developed by Hale and collaborators. We employ much of the known elastic and reaction data, in a four-channel treatment. The data include elastic 3He+6Li differential cross sections from 0.7 to 2.0 MeV, integrated reaction cross sections for energies from 0.7 to 5.0 MeV for 6Li(3He,p)8Be* and from 0.4 to 5.0 MeV for the 6Li(3He,d)7Be reaction. Capture data have been added to an earlier analysis with integrated cross section measurements from 0.7 to 0.825 MeV for 6Li(3He,gamma)9B. The resulting resonance parameters are compared with tabulated values, and previously unidentified resonances are noted. Our results show that there are no near d+7Be threshold resonances with widths that are 10's of keV and reduce the likelihood that a resonance-enhanced mass-7 destruction mechanism, as suggested in recently published work, can explain the 7Li problem.

Abstract:In a recent Letter entitled "Measurement of d + 7Be Cross Sections for Big-Bang Nucleosynthesis", Rijal et al. describe the results of an experiment that put the d + 7Be reaction rate on firmer ground. The erratum of Rijal et al. claims that including this reaction rate in big bang nucleosynthesis brings a significant reduction of up to 8.1% of lithium production relative to calculations that exclude this reaction. In contrast, using several well tested BBN codes, we confirm earlier studies showing that the effect is less than 1%, so that this measurement cannot alleviate the cosmological lithium problem.

Abstract:The discrepancy between the theoretical prediction of primordial lithium abundances and astronomical observations is called the Lithium Problem. We find that extra contributions from non-thermal hydrogen and helium during Big Bang nucleosynthesis can explain the discrepancy, for both Li-7 and Li-6, and will change the deuterium abundance only little. The allowed parameter space of such an amount of non-thermal particles and the energy range is shown. The hypothesis is stable regardless of the cross-section uncertainty of relevant reactions and the explicit shape of the energy spectrum.

Abstract:There may be non-thermal cosmic rays during big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN) epoch (dubbed as BBNCRs). This paper investigated whether such BBNCRs can be the origin of Lithium problem or not. It can be expected that BBNCRs flux will be small in order to keep the success of standard BBN (SBBN). With favorable assumptions on the BBNCR spectrum between 0.09 – 4 MeV, our numerical calculation showed that extra contributions from BBNCRs can account for the ^7Li abundance successfully. However ^6Li abundance is only lifted an order of magnitude, which is still much lower than the observed value. As the deuteron abundance is very sensitive to the spectrum choice of BBNCRs, the allowed parameter space for the spectrum is strictly constrained. We should emphasize that the acceleration mechanism for BBNCRs in the early universe is still an open question. For example, strong turbulent magnetic field is probably the solution to the problem. Whether such a mechanism can provide the required spectrum deserves further studies.

Abstract:Assuming the best numerical value for the cosmic baryonic density and the existence of three neutrino flavors, standard big bang nucleosynthesis is a parameter-free model. It is important to assess if the observed primordial abundances can be reproduced by simulations. Numerous studies have shown that the simulations overpredict the primordial $^7$Li abundance by a factor of $\approx$ $3$ compared to the observations. The discrepancy may be caused by unknown systematics in $^7$Li observations, poorly understood depletion of lithium in stars, errors in thermonuclear rates that take part in the lithium and beryllium synthesis, or physics beyond the standard model. Here, we focus on the likelihood of a nuclear physics solution. The status of the key nuclear reaction rates is summarized. Big bang nucleosynthesis simulations are performed with the most recent reaction rates and the uncertainties of the predicted abundances are established using a Monte Carlo technique. Correlations between abundances and reaction rates are investigated based on the metric of mutual information. The rates of four reactions impact the primordial $^7$Li abundance: $^3$He($\alpha$,$\gamma$)$^7$Be, d(p,$\gamma$)$^3$He, $^7$Be(d,p)2$\alpha$, and $^7$Be(n,p)$^7$Li. We employ a genetic algorithm to search for simultaneous rate changes in these four reactions that may account for all observed primordial abundances. When the search is performed for reaction rate ranges that are much wider than recently reported uncertainties, no acceptable solutions are found. Based on the currently available evidence, we conclude that it is highly unlikely for the cosmological lithium problem to have a nuclear physics solution.

A Lithium Experiment as the Stringent Test of the Theory of Stellar Evolution

Abstract:We show that a lithium experiment has a potential to confirm or reject the value 1.5% of the solar luminosity attributed to a CNO-cycle by the SSM and to prove that the difference between total energy release of the Sun and what is produced in a hydrogen sequence is really produced in CNO cycle. This will be the stringent test of the theory of stellar evolution and the termination of the long-standing goal - the neutrino spectroscopy of the interior of the Sun. At the present time one can see no other way to solve this task, it can be accomplished only with a lithium detector utilizing its high sensitivity to CNO-neutrinos and very high accuracy in the theoretical evaluation of the cross-section of neutrino capture by 7Li. The analyses shows that although a lithium detector is a radiochemical one, principally it is possible to find separately the fluxes of 13N- and 15O-neutrinos.

New Insight Concerning Primordial Lithium Production

Abstract:To constrain the universe before recombination (380000 years after the Big Bang), we mostly rely on the measurements of the primordial abundances that indicate the first insight into the thermal history of the universe. The first production of the light elements is obtained by the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN). The production of the elements deuterium, helium-3, and helium-4 during BBN matches well the observations; however, the production of lithium (Lithium-7) based on the Standard Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (SBBN) is found to be higher by about a factor of three than the observed abundance from metal-poor halo stars. This so-called "Cosmological Lithium Problem" is still elusive and needs to be resolved. One important attempt to resolve this problem is to invoke a non-standard description of the SBBN to decrease the lithium abundance. In our previous work, we encountered a problem that the decrease in the Lithium-7 abundance requires an increase in the deuterium abundance to maximum values that are not accepted by observations. In the present work, a decrease in the lithium abundance could be achieved without maximizing the deuterium abundance by modifying the time-temperature relation in the range (0.43-0.91) GK during the nucleosynthesis process. This range is crucial to reducing the strong correlation between lithium and deuterium production. The main conclusion of the present work is that Lithium-7 abundance in the atmospheres of metal-poor stars cannot be analyzed without considering possible modifications to the primordial nucleosynthesis.

Abstract:We consider the effects of uncertainties in nuclear reaction rates on the cosmological constraints on the decays of unstable particles during or after Big-Bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). We identify the nuclear reactions due to non-thermal hadrons that are the most important in perturbing standard BBN, then quantify the uncertainties in these reactions and in the resulting light-element abundances. These results also indicate the key nuclear processes for which improved cross section data would allow different light-element abundances to be determined more accurately, thereby making possible more precise probes of BBN and evaluations of the cosmological constraints on unstable particles. Applying this analysis to models with unstable gravitinos decaying into neutralinos, we calculate the likelihood function for the light-element abundances measured currently, taking into account the current experimental errors in the determinations of the relevant nuclear reaction rates. We find a region of the gravitino mass and abundance in which the abundances of deuterium, He4 and Li7 may be fit with chi^2 = 5.5, compared with chi^2 = 31.7 if the effects of gravitino decays are unimportant. The best-fit solution is improved to chi^2 ~ 2.0 when the lithium abundance is taken from globular cluster data. Some such re-evaluation of the observed light-element abundances and/or nuclear reaction rates would be needed if this region of gravitino parameters is to provide a complete solution to the cosmological Li7 problem.

Abstract:One of the three testaments in favor of the big bang theory is the prediction of the primordial elemental abundances in the big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). The Standard BBN is a parameter-free theory due to the precise knowledge of the baryon-to-photon ratio of the Universe obtained from studies of the anisotropies of cosmic microwave background radiation. Although the computed abundances of light elements during primordial nucleosynthesis and those determined from observations are in good agreement throughout a range of nine orders of magnitude, there is still a disparity of $^7$Li abundance overestimated by a factor of $\sim 2.5$ when calculated theoretically. The number of light neutrino flavors, the neutron lifetime and the baryon-to-photon ratio in addition to the astrophysical nuclear reaction rates determine the primordial abundances. We previously looked into the impact of updating baryon-to-photon ratio and neutron lifetime and changing quite a few reaction rates on the yields of light element abundances in BBN. In this work, calculations are performed using new reaction rates for $^3$H(p,$\gamma$)$^4$He, $^6$Li(p,$\gamma$)$^7$Be, $^7$Be(p,$\gamma$)$^8$B, $^{13}$N(p,$\gamma$)$^{14}$O, $^7$Li(n,$\gamma$)$^8$Li and $^{11}$B(n,$\gamma$)$^{12}$B along with the latest measured value of neutron lifetime. We observe from theoretical calculations that these changes result in improvement by causing further reduction in the abundance of $^7$Li than calculated earlier.

Detailed study of the astrophysical direct capture reaction $^{6}{\rm Li}(p, γ)^{7}{\rm Be}$ in a potential model approach

Abstract:The astrophysical $S$ factor and reaction rates of the direct capture process $^{6}$Li(p,$\gamma)^{7}$Be are estimated within a two-body single-channel potential model approach. Central potentials of the Gaussian-form in the $^2P_{3/2}$ and $^2P_{1/2}$ waves are adjusted to reproduce the binding energies and the empirical values of the asymptotic normalization coefficients (ANC) for the $^7$Be(3/2$^-$) ground and $^7$Be(1/2$^-$) excited bound states, respectively. The parameters of the potential in the most important $^2S_{1/2}$ scattering channel were fitted to reproduce the empirical phase shifts from the literature and the low-energy astrophysical $S$ factor of the LUNA collaboration. The obtained results for the astrophysical $S$ factor and the reaction rates are in a very good agreement with available experimental data sets. The numerical estimates reproduce not only the absolute values, but also the energy and temperature dependence of the $S$ factor and reaction rates of the LUNA collaboration, respectively. The estimated $^{7}{\rm Li/H}$ primordial abundance ratio $(4.67\pm 0.04 )\times 10^{-10}$ is well consistent with recent BBN result of $(4.72\pm 0.72) \times 10^{-10}$ after the Planck observation.

Many-channel microscopic theory of resonance states and scattering processes in $^{9}$Be and $^{9}$B

Abstract:We present a many-channel microscopic model that extends the three-cluster model previously formulated in \cite{2009NPA...V37}. This extended model incorporates multiple three-cluster configurations, which are subsequently reduced to a comprehensive set of binary channels. These channels dictate the dynamics of various nuclear processes and the resonance structure of a compound nucleus across a broad energy spectrum. The application of this model focuses on investigating the nature of high-energy resonance states in $^{9}$Be and $^{9}$B, as well as the astrophysical $S$-factors for the reactions $^{7}$Li$(d,n)\alpha\alpha$ and $^{7}$Be$(d,p)\alpha\alpha$, particularly pertinent to the cosmological lithium problem. Parameterization of resonance states is performed across a wide range of total angular momenta and includes states of both positive and negative parity. Dominant decay channels are identified for each resonance state. Detailed analysis of astrophysical $S$ factors resulting from deuteron interactions with $^{7}$Li and $^{7}$Be is conducted within an energy range from zero to 2 MeV. Four exit channels in $^{9}$Be ($^{8}$Be($0^{+}$)$+n$, $^{8}$Be($2^{+}$)$+n$, $^{5}$He($3/2^{-}$)$+\alpha$, $^{5}$He($1/2^{-}$)$+\alpha$) and four in $^{9}$B ($^{8}$Be($0^{+}$)$+p$, $^{8}$Be($2^{+}$)$+p$, $^{5}$Li($3/2^{-}$)$+\alpha$, $^{5}$Li($1/2^{-}$)$+\alpha$) are considered. A clear hierarchy of reactions is established for the energy range 0$\leq E<$1.0 MeV. Notably, reactions $^{7}$Li$+d=^{8}$Be($0^{+}$)$+n$ and $^{7}$Be$+d=^{8}$Be($0^{+}$)$+p$ substantially dominate over all other reactions within this energy range. The model satisfactory describes the experimental astrophysical $S$ factors for these reactions.

Abstract:I summarize the stellar side of the cosmological lithium problem(s). Evidence from independent studies is accumulating and indicates that stars may very well be fully responsible for lowering their surface lithium from the predicted primordial value to observed levels through internal element-transport mechanisms collectively referred to as atomic diffusion. While atomic diffusion can be modelled from first principles, stellar evolution uses a parametrized representation of convection making it impossible to predict convective-boundary mixing as a vital stellar process moderating atomic diffusion. More work is clearly needed here for a fully quantitative picture of lithium (and metallicity) evolution as stars age. Lastly, note that inferred stellar lithium-6 abundances have all but disappeared.

Abstract:The discrepancy between the theoretical prediction of primordial lithium abundances and astronomical observations is called the Lithium Problem. We assume that during Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN), nucleons can gain energy and deviate from thermal equilibrium, namely BBN cosmic rays (BBNCRs). BBNCR primary spectra are uncertain and the Coulomb energy-loss processes are neglected; however, we suppose a steady state of BBNCR spectra referring to the Galactic cosmic ray spectra observed today, to see constraints on BBNCRs, for example, the amount and energy range, not sticking to the explicit shape of the spectra. Such extra contributions from BBNCRs can explain the discrepancy, for both Li-7 and Li-6, and will change the deuterium abundance by only a little. The allowed parameter space of such an amount of nonthermal particles and the energy range are shown. The hypothesis is stable regardless of the cross-section uncertainty of relevant reactions and the explicit shape of the energy spectrum.
