Abstract:In the first part of this paper, we construct mod 2 elliptic genera on manifolds of dimensions 8k+1, 8k+2 by mod 2 index formulas of Dirac operators. They are given by mod 2 modular forms or mod 2 automorphic functions. We also obtain an integral formula for the mod 2 index of the Dirac operator. As a by-product we find topological obstructions to group actions. In the second part, we construct higher elliptic genera and prove some of their rigidity properties under group actions. In the third part we write down characteristic series for all Witten genera by Jacobi theta-functions. The modular property and transformation formulas of elliptic genera then follow easily. We shall also prove that Krichever's genera, which come from integrable systems, can be written as indices of twisted Dirac operators forSU-manifolds. Some general discussions about elliptic genera are given.

Abstract:Let $G$ be an affine or hyperbolic rank 2 Kac--Moody group over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. Let $X=X_{q+1}$ be the Tits building of $G$, the $q+1$--homogeneous tree. Let $\Gamma$ be a nonuniform lattice in $G$. When $\Gamma=P_i^-$, $i=1,2$, the standard parabolic subgroup for the negative $BN$--pair, the quotient graph $P^-_i\backslash X$ is the positive half of the fundamental apartment of $X$, a semi-infinite ray. We define Eisenstein series on $P_1^-\backslash X$. We prove convergence of Eisenstein series in a half space. This uses Iwasawa decomposition of the Haar measure on $G$. A crucial tool is a description of the vertices of $X$ in terms of Iwasawa cells, which we give. We prove meromorphic continuation of Eisenstein series using the Selberg--Bernstein continuation principle. This requires an analog of integral operators on the Tits building and the classical truncation operator for Eisenstein series, which we construct.

Counting stringy points on a family of character varieties

Abstract:We provided explicit formulas for the number of stringy points over finite fields of parabolic type A character varieties with generic semisimple monodromy. This leads to formulas for their stringy E-polynomials. In particular, they satisfy the Betti Topological Mirror Symmetry Conjecture of T. Hausel and M. Thaddeus, as well as a refinement regarding isotypic components. Our proof is based on a Frobenius' type formula for Clifford's type settings and an analysis of it in a specific set-up related to regular wreath products with cyclic groups.

A natural basis for intersection numbers

Abstract:We advertise elementary symmetric polynomials $e_i$ as the natural basis for generating series $A_{g,n}$ of intersection numbers of genus g and n marked points. Closed formulae for $A_{g,n}$ are known for genera $0$ and $1$ -- this approach provides formulae for $g = 2,3,4$, together with an algorithm to compute the formula for any g. The claimed naturality of the e_i basis relies in the unexpected vanishing of some coefficients with a clear pattern: we conjecture that $A_{g,n}$ can have at most $g$ factors $e_i$, with $i>1$, in its expansion. This observation promotes a paradigm for more general cohomology classes. As an application of the conjecture, we find new integral representations of $A_{g,n}$, which recover expressions for the Weil-Petersson volumes in terms of Bessel functions.

Stable curves and chromatic polynomials

Abstract:The intersection numbers of moduli spaces of stable curves $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,m}$ are well-studied and are known to have rich combinatorial structure. We introduce a natural class of these intersection numbers $\omega_{G,g,m}$ indexed by finite simple graphs $G=(V,E)$. In genus zero, these numbers are closely related to several previously-studied quantities, including maximum likelihood degrees in algebraic statistics, counts of regions of certain hyperplane arrangements, and Kapranov degrees. We give two proofs of a simple closed formula $\omega_{G,g,m}=(-1)^{\left\lvert V \right\rvert}\chi_G(-(2g-2+m)),$ where $\chi_G$ is the chromatic polynomial of $G$ -- one proof via intersection theory on moduli spaces of stable curves, and the other using the theory of hyperplane arrangements. We discuss several related questions and speculations, including new candidates for the chromatic polynomial of a directed graph.

Abstract:We examine the coefficients in front of Chern numbers for complex genera, and pay special attention to the $\text{Td}^{\frac{1}{2}}$-genus, the $\Gamma$-genus as well as the Todd genus. Some related geometric applications to hyper-Kähler and Calabi-Yau manifolds are discussed. Along this line and building on the work of Doubilet in 1970s, various Hoffman-type formulas for multiple-(star) zeta values and transition matrices among canonical bases of the ring of symmetric functions can be uniformly treated in a more general framework.

Abstract:In this paper, based on an ideal of Tian, we establish a new sufficient condition for a positive integer to be a congruent number in terms of Legendre symbols of prime factors of the positive integer. Our criterion generalizes previous criterions of Heegner, and Birch--Stephens, Monsky, and Tian, and conjecturally provides a list of positive density of congruent numbers. Our method of proving our criterion is to give formulae for the analytic Tate--Shafarevich number in terms of the so-called genus periods and genus points. These formulae are derived from the Waldspurger formula and the generalized Gross--Zagier formula of Yuan-Zhang-Zhang.

Abstract:We give a counting formula in terms of modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials and the chromatic quasisymmetric function for the number of points on an arbitrary Hessenberg variety over a finite field. As a consequence, we express the Poincaré polynomials of complex Hessenberg varieties in terms of a Hall scalar product involving the symmetric functions above. We use these results to give a new proof of a combinatorial formula for the modified Hall-Littlewood polynomials.

Abstract:We prove a formula for the degrees of Ikeda and Naruse's $P$-Grothendieck polynomials using combinatorics of shifted tableaux. We show this formula can be used in conjunction with results of Hamaker, Marberg, and Pawlowski to obtain an upper bound on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of certain Pfaffian varieties known as vexillary skew-symmetric matrix Schubert varieties. Similar combinatorics additionally yields a new formula for the degree of Grassmannian Grothendieck polynomials and the regularity of Grassmannian matrix Schubert varieties, complementing a 2021 formula of Rajchgot, Ren, Robichaux, St. Dizier, and Weigandt.

Counting elliptic curves with a cyclic $m$-isogeny over $\mathbb{Q}$

Abstract:Using methods from analytic number theory, for $m > 5$ and for $m = 4$, we obtain asymptotics with power-saving error terms for counts of elliptic curves with a cyclic $m$-isogeny up to quadratic twist over the rational numbers. For $m > 5$, we then apply a Tauberian theorem to achieve asymptotics with power saving error for counts of elliptic curves with a cyclic $m$-isogeny up to isomorphism over the rational numbers.

Abstract:For any branched double covering of compact Riemann surfaces, we consider the associated character varieties that are unitary in the global sense, which we call $\text{GL}_n\rtimes\!<\!\sigma\!>\!~$-character varieties. We restrict the monodromies around the ramification points to generic semi-simple conjugacy classes contained in $\text{GL}_n\sigma$, and compute the E-polynomials of these character varieties using the character table of $\text{GL}_n(q)\rtimes\!<\!\sigma\!>\!$. The result is expressed as the inner product of certain symmetric functions associated to the wreath products $(\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^N\rtimes\mathfrak{S}_N$. We are then led to a conjectural formula for the mixed Hodge polynomial, which involves (modified) Macdonald polynomials and wreath Macdonald polynomials.

Abstract:Let $k$ be a number field. We provide an asymptotic formula for the number of Galois extensions of $k$ with absolute discriminant bounded by some $X \geq 1$, as $X\to\infty$. We also provide an asymptotic formula for the closely related count of extensions $K/k$ whose normal closure has discriminant bounded by $X$. The key behind these results is a new upper bound on the number of Galois extensions of $k$ with a given Galois group $G$ and discriminant bounded by $X$; we show the number of such extensions is $O_{[k:\mathbb{Q}],G} (X^{ \frac{4}{\sqrt{|G|}}})$. This improves over the previous best bound $O_{k,G,\epsilon}(X^{\frac{3}{8}+\epsilon})$ due to Ellenberg and Venkatesh. In particular, ours is the first bound for general $G$ with an exponent that decays as $|G| \to \infty$.

On the arithmetic of polynomials over a number field

Abstract:Counterparts of several classical results of number theory are proven for the ring of polynomials with coefficients in a number field. A theorem of Milnor that determines the Witt ring of a function field is applied to prove an analogue of Gauss's principal genus theorem for binary quadratic forms with polynomial coefficients. This is used to help understand when and why quadratic reciprocity fails in these polynomial rings. Another application is a count of the number of cyclic subgroups whose order is divisible by four in the primary decomposition of the torsion subgroup of the Jacobian of certain hyperelliptic curves. Invariant theory is applied to prove an analogue of a classical theorem of Fueter to give criteria for an elliptic curve with a polynomial discriminant and zero $j$-invariant to have no affine points over the associated function field.

Abstract:Let $[X,\lambda]$ be a principally polarized abelian variety over a finite field with commutative endomorphism ring; further suppose that either $X$ is ordinary or the field is prime. Motivated by an equidistribution heuristic, we introduce a factor $\nu_v([X,\lambda])$ for each place $v$ of $\mathbb Q$, and show that the product of these factors essentially computes the size of the isogeny class of $[X,\lambda]$. The derivation of this mass formula depends on a formula of Kottwitz and on analysis of measures on the group of symplectic similitudes, and in particular does not rely on a calculation of class numbers.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite abelian $p$-group. We count $G$-extensions of global rational function fields $\mathbb F_q(T)$ of characteristic $p$ by the degree of what we call their Artin-Schreier conductor. The corresponding (ordinary) generating function turns out to be rational. This gives an exact answer to the counting problem, and seems to beg for a geometric interpretation. This is in contrast with the generating functions for the ordinary conductor (from class field theory) and the discriminant, which in general have no meromorphic continuation to the entire complex plane.

A Degree Bound for Planar Functions

Abstract:Using Stickelberger's theorem on Gauss sums, we show that if $F$ is a planar function on a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$, then for all non-zero functions $G : \mathbb{F}_q \to \mathbb{F}_q$, we have \begin{equation*} \mathrm{deg } \ G \circ F - \mathrm{deg } \ G \le \frac{n(p-1)}{2}\,, \end{equation*} where $q = p^n$ with $p$ a prime and $n$ a positive integer, and $\mathrm{deg } \ F$ is the algebraic degree of $F$, i.e., the degree of the corresponding multivariate polynomial over $\mathbb{F}_p$. This bound leads to a simpler proof of the classification of planar polynomials over $\mathbb{F}_p$ and planar monomials over $\mathbb{F}_{p^2}$. As a new result, using the same degree bound, we complete the classification of planar monomials for all $n = 2^k$ with $p>5$ and $k$ a non-negative integer. Finally, we state a conjecture on the sum of the base-$p$ digits of integers modulo $q-1$ that implies the complete classification of planar monomials over finite fields of characteristic $p>5$.
