Abstract:The free algebra is an interesting and useful algebraic object. Here I introduce "freealg", an R package which furnishes computational support for free algebras. The package uses the standard template library's "map" class for efficiency, which uses the fact that the order of the terms is algebraically immaterial. The package follows "disordR" discipline. I demonstrate some properties of free algebra using the package, and showcase package idiom. The package is available on CRAN at https://CRAN.R-project.org/package=freealg.

Abstract:This text, Chapter 23 in the "AutoMathA" handbook, is devoted to the study of rational subsets of groups, with particular emphasis on the automata-theoretic approach to finitely generated subgroups of free groups. Indeed, Stallings' construction, associating a finite inverse automaton with every such subgroup, inaugurated a complete rewriting of free group algorithmics, with connections to other fields such as topology or dynamics. Another important vector in the chapter is the fundamental Benois' Theorem, characterizing rational subsets of free groups. The theorem and its consequences really explain why language theory can be successfully applied to the study of free groups. Rational subsets of (free) groups can play a major role in proving statements (a priori unrelated to the notion of rationality) by induction. The chapter also includes related results for more general classes of groups, such as virtually free groups or graph groups.

Abstract:We show that a virtually residually finite rationally solvable (RFRS) group of type virtually algebraically fibres with kernel of type if and only if the first -Betti numbers of vanish, that is, for . This confirms a conjecture of Kielak. We also offer a variant of this result over other fields, in particular in positive characteristic. As an application of the main result, we show that amenable virtually RFRS groups of type are virtually Abelian. Free Fractions: An Invitation to (applied) Free Fields

Abstract:Long before we learn to construct the field of rational numbers (out of the ring of integers) at university, we learn how to calculate with fractions at school. When it comes to "numbers", we are used to a commutative multiplication, for example 2*3=6=3*2. On the other hand --even before we can write-- we learn to talk (in a language) using words, consisting of purely non-commuting "letters" (or symbols), for example "xy" is not equal to "yx" (with the concatenation as multiplication). Now, if we combine numbers (from a field) with words (from the free monoid of an alphabet) we get non-commutative polynomials which form a ring (with "natural" addition and multiplication), namely the free associative algebra. Adding or multiplying polynomials is easy, for example (2/3*xy+z)+1/3*xy=xy+z or 2*x(yx+3*z)=2*xyx+6*xz. Although the integers and the non-commutative polynomials look rather different, they share many properties, for example the unique number of irreducible factors: x(1-yx)=x-xyx=(1-xy)x. However, the construction of the universal field of fractions (aka "free field") of the free associative algebra is highly non-trivial (but really beautiful). Therefore we provide techniques (building on the work of Cohn and Reutenauer) to calculate with free fractions (representing elements in the free field or "skew field of non-commutative rational functions") to be able to explore a fascinating non-commutative world.

Abstract:We obtain an explicit description of the endomorphisms of free-abelian by free groups together with a characterization of when they are injective and surjective. As a consequence we see that free-abelian by free groups are Hopfian and not coHopfian, and we investigate the isomorphism problem and the Brinkmann Problem for this family of groups. In particular, we prove that the isomorphism problem (undecidable in general) is decidable when restricted to finite actions, and that the Brinkmann Problem is decidable both for monomorphisms and automorphisms.

Abstract:The author was recently able to provide a cohomological interpretation of Tate's Riemann-Roch formula for number fields using some new harmonic analysis objects, ghost-spaces. When trying to investigate these objects in general, we realized the importance of functions and measures on locally compact abelian groups that are both positive and positive-definite at the same time. It looks like this class of functions and measures was not systematically studied before. The goal of this paper is to partially fill in this gap. We answer some of the natural questions involving these functions and measures, especially those that satisfy some extra integrability conditions. We also study some operations and constructions involving these functions and measures. There are several very interesting open questions, that we are only able to point out at this moment. In particular, the structure of the cone of such functions is not clear even when the group is just $\R.$

Abstract:The group of 2-by-2 matrices with integer entries and determinant $\pm > 1$ can be identified either with the group of outer automorphisms of a rank two free group or with the group of isotopy classes of homeomorphisms of a 2-dimensional torus. Thus this group is the beginning of three natural sequences of groups, namely the general linear groups ${\rm{GL}}(n,\Z)$, the groups of outer automorphisms of free groups of rank $n\geq 2$, and the mapping class groups of closed orientable surfaces of genus $g\geq 1$. Much of the work on mapping class groups and automorphisms of free groups is motivated by the idea that these sequences of groups are strongly analogous. In this article we highlight a few of the most striking similarities and differences between these series of groups and present a list of open problems motivated by this philosophy.

FrackyFrac: A Standalone UniFrac Calculator

Abstract:UniFrac is a family of distance metrics over microbial abundances, that take taxonomic relatedness into account. Current tools and libraries for calculating UniFrac have specific requirements regarding the user's technical expertise, operating system, and pre-installed software, which might exclude potential users. FrackyFrac is a native command-line tool that can run on any platform and has no requirements. It can also generate the phylogenetic trees required for the calculation. We show that FrackyFrac's performance is on par with currently existing implementations. FrackyFrac can make UniFrac accessible to researchers who may otherwise skip it due to the effort involved, and it can simplify analysis pipelines for those who already use it.

Abstract:We define the affine Frobenius Brauer category $\mathcal{AB}(A, -^\star)$ associated to each symmetric involutive Frobenius superalgebra $A$. We then define an action of these categories on the categories of finite-dimensional supermodules for orthosymplectic Lie superalgebras defined over $A$. The case where $A$ is the base field recovers the known action of the affine Brauer category on categories of supermodules for orthogonal and symplectic Lie algebras. The definition and associated action of $\mathcal{AB}(A, -^\star)$ are both novel when $A$ is e.g. the quaternions $\mathbb{H}$, a finite group algebra, a zigzag superalgebra, or a truncated polynomial algebra. Finally, we state a conjecture for bases of hom-spaces in $\mathcal{AB}(A, -^\star)$ and outline a potential proof strategy.

Central amalgamation of groups and the RFD property

Abstract:It is an old and challenging topic to investigate for which discrete groups G the full group C*-algebra C*(G) is residually finite-dimensional (RFD). In particular not much is known about how the RFD property behaves under fundamental constructions, such as amalgamated free products and HNN-extensions. In [CS19] it was proved that central amalgamated free products of virtually abelian groups are RFD. In this paper we prove that this holds much beyond this case. Our method is based on showing a certain approximation property for characters induced from central subgroups. In particular it allows us to prove that free products of polycyclic-by-finite groups amalgamated over finitely generated central subgroups are RFD. On the other hand we prove that the class of RFD C*-algebras (and groups) is not closed under central amalgamated free products. Namely we give an example of RFD groups (in fact finitely generated amenable RF groups) whose central amalgamated free product is not RFD, moreover it is not even maximally almost periodic. This answers a question of Khan and Morris [KM82].

Abstract:In this short article I introduce the spray package, which provides some functionality for handling sparse arrays. The package uses the C++ Standard Template Library's map class to store and retrieve elements. One natural application for sparse arrays is multivariate polynomials and I give two examples of the package in use, one drawn from the fields of random walks on lattices and one from the field of recreational combinatorics. R*-categories: The Hilbert-space analogue of abelian categories

Abstract:This article introduces R*-categories: an abstraction of categories exhibiting the "algebraic" aspects of the theory of Hilbert spaces. Notably, finite biproducts in R*-categories can be orthogonalised using the Gram-Schmidt process, and generalised notions of positivity and contraction support a variant of Sz.-Nagy's unitary dilation theorem. Underpinning these generalisations is the structure of an involutive identity-on-objects contravariant endofunctor, which encodes adjoints of morphisms. The R*-category axioms are otherwise inspired by those for abelian categories, comprising a few simple properties of products and kernels. Additivity is not assumed, but nevertheless follows. In fact, the similarity with abelian categories runs deeper: R*-categories are quasi-abelian and thus homological. Examples include the categories of finite-dimensional inner product modules over a partially ordered division ring, and the categories of self-dual Hilbert modules over a W*-algebra.

Abstract:We initiate the study of finite abelian groups that faithfully act on three-dimensional rationally connected varieties. We show that these groups can be naturally divided into three types. The first type consists of finite abelian groups that are products of two groups that belong to the Cremona group of rank 1 and 2, respectively; the second type consists of cyclic extensions of finite abelian groups acting on a K3 surface; the third type consists of groups that act on terminal Fano threefolds with empty anti-canonical linear system. We also establish a boundedness result for the groups of the second type.
