Abstract:We analyze the significance of supersymmetry in two topological models and the standard model (SM). We conclude that the two topological field theory models favor hidden supersymmetry. The SM superpartners, instead, have not been found.

Abstract:Supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model have been in vogue for over half a century. They have many interesting theoretical properties like calculability, absence of quadratic divergences, and phenomenologically impactful features like gauge coupling unification, dark matter candidates, signatures at present and future colliders, etc. A defining feature of these models is the calculability of Higgs mass in terms of a few parameters. The discovery of a Higgs particle with a mass of around 125 GeV thus has significant implications. The null results for the searches of superpartners at LHC has also put further constraints. Taken together with direct detection limits on WIMP (Weakly Interacting Massive Particle) dark matter, it appears that TeV scale supersymmetry is not realised in Nature and the theoretical expectations have reached a turning point. The present onslaught from the experiments suggests that supersymmetric models need a more complex particle structure, lagrangian and breaking patterns to be a natural solution to the hierarchy problem. We review existing models and discuss their feasibility in the current and future experimental programs.

An alternative form of supersymmetry with reduced cross-sections and modified experimental signatures

Abstract:There is a convincing case for some form of supersymmetry, but conventional supersymmetry has been plagued by many unsolved theoretical difficulties, and not a single superpartner has been identified up to surprisingly high experimental limits. These failures suggest that it is appropriate to rethink the meaning of supersymmetry at the most fundamental level. Here we consider a radically different form of supersymmetry, which initially combines standard Weyl fermion fields and primitive (unphysical) boson fields. A stable vacuum then requires that the initial boson fields be transformed into three kinds of scalar-boson fields: the usual complex fields $\phi$, auxiliary fields $F$, and real fields $\varphi$ of a new kind. The requirement of a stable vacuum thus imposes Lorentz invariance, and also immediately breaks the initial susy -- whereas the breaking of conventional supersymmetry has long been a formidable difficulty. Even more importantly, for future experimental success, the present formulation may explain why no superpartners have yet been identified: Embedded in an $SO(10)$ grand-unified description, most of the conventional processes for production, decay, and detection of sfermions are excluded, and the same is true for many processes involving gauginos and higgsinos. This implies that superpartners with masses $\sim 1$ TeV may exist, but with reduced cross-sections and modified experimental signatures. For example, a top squark (as redefined here) will not decay at all, but can radiate pairs of gauge bosons and will also leave straight tracks through second-order (electromagnetic, weak, strong, and Higgs) interactions with detectors. The predictions of the present theory include (1) the dark matter candidate of our previous papers, (2) many new fermions with masses not far above 1 TeV, and (3) the full range of superpartners with a modified phenomenology.

Ultimately, the experimental discovery of supersymmetric particles at future colliders will determine whether supersymmetry is relevant for TeV scale physics. The grand hope of supersymmetry enthusiasts is to connect TeV scale supersymmetry with Planck scale physics. Abstract:The analogy between the Skyrme and Higgs fields leads to the conjecture that all fermions are skyrmions and thus always carry conserved quantum numbers, which are identified with baryon or lepton quantum numbers. This connection between spin and quantum numbers, which parallels the connection between spin and statistics due to the Pauli principle, may explain why supersymmetry has not been observed. Creation of sparticles at higher than present energies due to a breakdown of the Skyrme mechanism might imply the violation of the exclusion principle.

Abstract:For 34 years it has been known that chiral supersymmetry (SUSY) in 3+1 dimensions has a very large Becchi-Rouet-Stora (BRS) cohomology space at ghost charge one. This suggests that there might be corresponding SUSY anomalies coming from linearly divergent, triangle, Feynman diagrams. This paper discusses some progress and some outstanding issues related to these questions. The concept of exotic pairs is introduced, with an example from the massless supersymmetric standard model.

Supersymmetry with Lorentz Symmetry Violation

Abstract:We study two (massless free field) models, a photon/photino model with a vector gauge field and a Majorana spinor field, and a Wess-Zumino model. They each exhibit Lorentz symmetry violation but retain, in an appropriate way, the supersymmetry correspondance between the particles of the two fields. In relation to the photon field the Lorentz symmetry violation is of a simple but non-trivial kind that implies birefringence. In relation to the spinor field the Lorentz violation is produced by a modification of the Majorana equation that is a simplified version of more general investigations of Lorentz symmetry violation of the Dirac equation. In the case of the Wess-Zumino model we retain the same violation of Lorentz symmetry for the Majorana field and adjust the propagation of the scalar particles so that they exhibit a corresponding birefringence. The advantages of the models are that they are straightforward to investigate completely and both retain the basic aspect of supersymmetry namely the one-to-one correspondance between bosons and fermions. As a result of this bottom-up approach it is then possible to construct conserved supersymmetry charges and investigate their algebraic properties. To some extent these are similar to those encountered in the case of Lorentz invariance. However there are differences and in particular non-local terms appear in the commutation relations of the supersymmetry charges and fields of the models. We examine carefully the rather intricate nature of the limit back to Lorentz invariance.

Abstract:The attractive feature of supersymmetry is predictive power, due to the large number of calculable properties and to coupling nonrenormalization. This power can be fully expressed in hidden sectors where supersymmetry may be exact, as these sectors are secluded from the visible one where instead supersymmetry must be broken. This suggests a new paradigm for supersymmetric dark sectors, where supersymmetry is exact at the dark matter scale, implying that many properties of hidden supersymmetric dark sectors can be fully computed. Spontaneous Supersymmetry Breaking in Inhomogeneous Supersymmetric Field Theories and BPS Vacua

Abstract:We study spontaneous supersymmetry breaking in inhomogeneous extensions of ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric field theory models in 4-dimensions. The ${\cal N}=1$ Abelian Higgs model with the inhomogeneous mass parameter and the FI coefficient that are dependent on spatial coordinates, as well as the O'Raifeartaigh model with all its parameters being dependent on spatial coordinates, are studied in detail. In the presence of inhomogeneous parameters, half supersymmetry can be preserved by adding appropriate inhomogeneous deformations to the original Lagrangians. The inhomogeneous deformations often break the R-symmetry explicitly. In cases where the inhomogeneous deformations do not break the R-symmetry explicitly, we demonstrate that spontaneous breaking of the R-symmetry is infeasible. We argue that those models can not be spontaneous supersymmetry breaking models, according to the Nelson-Seiberg argument. We comment on this issue in the context of a generic ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric model as well.

Abstract:Proposed as a fundamental symmetry describing our Universe, spacetime supersymmetry (SUSY) has not been discovered yet in nature. Nonetheless, it has been predicted that SUSY may emerge in low-energy physics of quantum materials such as topological superconductors and Weyl semimetals. Here, by performing state-of-the-art sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo simulations of an interacting two-dimensional topological superconductor, we show convincing evidence that the N=1 SUSY emerges at its edge quantum critical point (EQCP) while its bulk remains gapped and topologically nontrivial. Remarkably, near the EQCP, we find that the edge Majorana fermion acquires a mass that is identical with that of its bosonic superpartner. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first observation that fermions and bosons have equal dynamically generated masses, a hallmark of emergent SUSY. We further discuss experimental signatures of such EQCP and associated SUSY.

Abstract:We construct a supersymmetric quantum mechanical model in which the energy eigenvalues of the Hamiltonians are the products of Riemann zeta functions. We show that the trivial and nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function naturally correspond to the vanishing ground state energies in this model. The model provides a natural form of supersymmetry.

Abstract:Supersymmetric quantum mechanical models are computed by the Path integral approach. In the $\beta\rightarrow0$ limit, the integrals localize to the zero modes. This allows us to perform the index computations exactly because of supersymmetric localization, and we will show how the geometry of target space enters the physics of sigma models resulting in the relationship between the supersymmetric model and the geometry of the target space in the form of topological invariants. Explicit computation details are given for the Euler characteristics of the target manifold, and the index of Dirac operator for the model on a spin manifold.

Abstract:Dynamical, metastable supersymmetry breaking appears to be a generic phenomena in supersymmetric field theories. It's simplest implementation is within the so-called "retrofitted O'Raifeartaigh Models". While seemingly flexible, model building in these theories is significantly constrained. In gauge-mediated versions, if the approximate $R$ symmetry of the theory is spontaneously broken, the messenger scale is fixed; if explicitly broken by retrofitted couplings, a very small dimensionless number is required; if supergravity corrections are responsible for the symmetry breaking, at least two moderately small couplings are required, and there is a large range of possible messenger scales. In gravity mediated versions, achieving $m_{3/2} \approx M_Z$ is a problem of discrete tuning. With plausible assumptions, one can't achieve this to better than a factor of 100, perhaps accounting for a {\it little hierarchy} and the surprisingly large value of the Higgs mass.

Abstract:The connection between the scales of $ {\rm SU} (2)\times {\rm U} (1) $ gauge symmetry breaking and supersymmetry breaking is didactically displayed in the framework of a T.O.Y. (Theory Overestimating Yukawas) model, a version of the $ (M+1)SSM $ (supersymmetric extension of the standard model with a gauge singlet) in which the relevant parameters are determined in the fixed point regime. Some conspicuous features of supersymmetric particle physics are reviewed in the light of this simplified model. An alternative theory corresponding to lim $ (M+1)SSM \longrightarrow MSSM, $ leads to interesting inequalities among the supersymmetric breaking parameters of the $ MSSM. $

Non-Abelian R-symmetries in $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry

Abstract:We investigate non-Abelian R-symmetries in $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric theory, where fields may transform under the R-symmetry in representations with dimension higher than one. While a continuous non-Abelian R-symmetry can always be decomposed to a $U(1)$ R-symmetry and non-R symmetries, there are non-trivial discrete non-Abelian R-symmetries that do not admit such a decomposition, and effective R-charges cannot be defined in such models. Previous results on sufficient conditions for R-symmetric supersymmetric vacua in Wess-Zumino models still hold, and do not depend on fields in representations of dimension greater than one. However, fields in higher-dimensional representations enter the sufficient conditions for supersymmetric vacua that break R-symmetry, but it is difficult to identify the independent variables which can be used to solve the F-flatness equation in this case, unless other conditions are fulfilled. We present examples with discrete non-Abelian R-symmetries of the lowest order in this case.

Who's Afraid of the Supersymmetric Dark? The Standard Model vs Low-Energy Supergravity

Abstract:Use of supergravity equations in astronomy and late-universe cosmology is often criticized on three grounds: (i) phenomenological success usually depends on the supergravity form for the scalar potential applying at the relevant energies; (ii) the low-energy scalar potential is extremely sensitive to quantum effects involving very massive particles and so is rarely well-approximated by classical calculations of its form; and (iii) almost all Standard Model particles count as massive for these purposes and none of these are supersymmetric. Why should Standard Model loops preserve the low-energy supergravity form even if supersymmetry is valid at energies well above the electroweak scale? We use recently developed tools for coupling supergravity to non-supersymmetric matter to estimate the loop effects of heavy non-supersymmetric particles on the low-energy effective action, and provide evidence that the supergravity form is stable against integrating out such particles (and so argues against the above objection). This suggests an intrinsically supersymmetric picture of Nature where supersymmetry survives to low energies within the gravity sector but not the visible sector (for which supersymmetry is instead non-linearly realized). We explore the couplings of both sectors in this picture and find that the presence of auxiliary fields in the gravity sector makes the visible sector share many features usually attributed to linearly realized supersymmetry although (unlike for the MSSM) a second Higgs doublet is not required for all Yukawa couplings to be non-vanishing and changes the dimension of the operator generating the Higgs mass. We discuss the naturalness of this picture and some of the implications it might have when searching for dark-sector physics.

Abstract:R-parity stands as an ad hoc assumption in the most popular version of the supersymmetric standard model. More than fifteen years' studies of R-parity violations have been restricted to various limiting scenarios. We illustrate how the single-VEV parametrization provides a workable framework to analyze the phenomenology of the complete theory of supersymmetry without R-parity. In our comprehensive study of various aspects of the resulting leptonic phenomenology at tree-level, we find that the physical τ lepton could actually bear substantial gaugino and higgsino components, making it very different from the e and the μ.
