Abstract:We study the Hobby-McKenzie varieties that constitute a major class investigated thoroughly in the monograph The shape of congruence lattices by Kearnes and Kiss. We obtain new characterizations of the Hobby-McKenzie varieties via compatible reflexive ternary structures. Based on our findings, we prove that in the lattice of interpretability types of varieties, the filter of the interpretability types of Hobby-McKenzie varieties is prime.

Abstract:A Taylor variety consists of all fixed order Taylor polynomials of rational functions, where the number of variables and degrees of numerators and denominators are fixed. In one variable, Taylor varieties are given by rank constraints on Hankel matrices. Inversion of the natural parametrization is known as Padé approximation. We study the dimension and defining ideals of Taylor varieties. Taylor hypersurfaces are interesting for projective geometry, since their Hessians tend to vanish. In three and more variables, there exist defective Taylor varieties whose dimension is smaller than the number of parameters. We explain this with Fröberg's Conjecture in commutative algebra.

Abstract:We study generalised Taylor morphisms, functors which construct differential ring homomorphisms from ring homomorphisms in a uniform way, analogous to the Taylor expansion for smooth functions. We generalise the construction of the twisted Taylor morphism by León Sánchez and Tressl to arbitrary differential rings by `twisting' the ring of Hurwitz series, and prove that this results in a functor which is the right adjoint to a certain forgetful functor. We therefore give a concrete characterisation of all generalised Taylor morphisms over all differential rings with finitely many commuting derivations.

Abstract:We study Taylor expansions of Jacobi forms of lattice index. As the main result, we give an embedding from certain space of such forms, whether scalar-valued or vector-valued, integral-weight or half-integral-weight, of any level, with any character, into a product of finitely many spaces of modular forms. As an application, we investigate linear relations among Jacobi theta series of lattice index. Many linear relations among the second powers of such theta series associated with the $D_4$ lattice and $A_3$ lattice are obtained, along with relations among the third powers of series associated with the $A_2$ lattice. We present the complete SageMath code for the $D_4$ lattice.

Abstract:In this paper, we extend constructions and results for the Taylor complex to the generalized Taylor complex constructed by Herzog. We construct an explicit DG-algebra structure on the generalized Taylor complex and extend a result of Katthän on quotients of the Taylor complex by DG-ideals. We introduce a generalization of the Scarf complex for families of monomial ideals, and show that this complex is always a direct summand of the minimal free resolution of the sum of these ideals. We also give an example of an ideal where the generalized Scarf complex strictly contains the standard Scarf complex. Moreover, we introduce the notion of quasitransverse monomial ideals, and prove a list of results relating to Golodness, Koszul homology, and other homological properties for such ideals.

Abstract:We show that the normal form of the Taylor expansion of a $\lambda$-term is isomorphic to its B\"ohm tree, improving Ehrhard and Regnier's original proof along three independent directions. First, we simplify the final step of the proof by following the left reduction strategy directly in the resource calculus, avoiding to introduce an abstract machine ad hoc. We also introduce a groupoid of permutations of copies of arguments in a rigid variant of the resource calculus, and relate the coefficients of Taylor expansion with this structure, while Ehrhard and Regnier worked with groups of permutations of occurrences of variables. Finally, we extend all the results to a nondeterministic setting: by contrast with previous attempts, we show that the uniformity property that was crucial in Ehrhard and Regnier's approach can be preserved in this setting.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce an equivariant analog of Weiss calculus of functors for all finite group $\mathrm{G}$. In our theory, Taylor approximations and derivatives are index by finite dimensional $\mathrm{G}$-representations, and homogeneous layers are classified by orthogonal $\mathrm{G}$-spectra. Further, our framework permits a notion of restriction as well as a notion of fixed-point at the level of Weiss functors. We establish various results comparing Taylor approximations and derivatives of fixed-point (resp. restrictions) functors to that of the fixed-point (resp. restrictions) of Taylor approximations and derivatives.

Abstract:Goodwillie's calculus of homotopy functors associates a tower of polynomial approximations, the Taylor tower, to a functor of topological spaces over a fixed space. We define a new tower, the varying center tower, for functors of categories with a fixed initial object, such as algebras under a fixed ring spectrum. We construct this new tower using elements of the Taylor tower constructions of Bauer, Johnson, and McCarthy for functors of simplicial model categories, and show how the varying center tower differs from Taylor towers in terms of the properties of its individual terms and convergence behaviour. We prove that there is a combinatorial model for the varying center tower given as a pro-equivalence between the varying center tower and towers of cosimplicial objects; this generalizes Eldred's cosimplicial models for finite stages of Taylor towers. As an application, we present models for the de Rham complex of rational commutative ring spectra due to Rezk on the one hand, and Goodwillie and Waldhausen on the other, and use our result to conclude that these two models will be equivalent when extended to $E_{\infty}$-ring spectra.

Abstract:Abstract We study a class of combinatorially defined polynomial ideals that are generated by minors of a generic symmetric matrix. Included within this class are the symmetric determinantal ideals, the symmetric ladder determinantal ideals, and the symmetric Schubert determinantal ideals of A. Fink, J. Rajchgot, and S. Sullivant. Each ideal in our class is a type C analog of a Kazhdan–Lusztig ideal of A. Woo and A. Yong; that is, it is the scheme‐theoretic defining ideal of the intersection of a type C Schubert variety with a type C opposite Schubert cell, appropriately coordinatized. The Kazhdan–Lusztig ideals that arise are exactly those where the opposite cell is 123‐avoiding. Our main results include Gröbner bases for these ideals, prime decompositions of their initial ideals (which are Stanley–Reisner ideals of subword complexes), and combinatorial formulas for their multigraded Hilbert series in terms of pipe dreams.

Toric varieties modulo reflections

Abstract:Let $W$ be a finite group generated by reflections of a lattice $M$. If a lattice polytope $P \subset M \otimes_{\mathbb Z}\mathbb R$ is preserved by $W$, then we show that the quotient of the projective toric variety $X_P$ by $W$ is isomorphic to the toric variety $X_{P \cap D}$, where $D$ is a fundamental domain for the action of $W$. This answers a question of Horiguchi-Masuda-Shareshian-Song, and recovers results of Blume, of the second author, and of Gui-Hu-Liu.

Abstract:A d ‐dimensional invertible topological field theory (TFT) is a functor from the symmetric monoidal (∞,n) ‐category of d ‐bordisms (embedded into R∞ and equipped with a tangential (X,ξ) ‐structure) that lands in the Picard subcategory of the target symmetric monoidal (∞,n) ‐category. We classify these field theories in terms of the cohomology of the (n−d) ‐connective cover of the Madsen–Tillmann spectrum. This is accomplished by identifying the classifying space of the (∞,n) ‐category of bordisms with Ω∞−nMTξ as an E∞ ‐space. This generalizes the celebrated result of Galatius–Madsen–Tillmann–Weiss (Acta Math. 202 (2009), no. 2, 195–239) in the case n=1 , and of Bökstedt–Madsen (An alpine expedition through algebraic topology, vol. 617, Contemp. Math., Amer. Math. Soc., Providence, RI, 2014, pp. 39–80) in the n ‐uple case. We also obtain results for the (∞,n) ‐category of d ‐bordisms embedding into a fixed ambient manifold M , generalizing results of Randal–Williams (Int. Math. Res. Not. IMRN 2011 (2011), no. 3, 572–608) in the case n=1 . We give two applications: (1) we completely compute all extended and partially extended invertible TFTs with target a certain category of n ‐vector spaces (for n⩽4 ), and (2) we use this to give a negative answer to a question raised by Gilmer and Masbaum (Forum Math. 25 (2013), no. 5, 1067–1106. arXiv:0912.4706).

Abstract:In this paper, the concepts of binomial difference ideals and toric difference varieties are defined and their properties are proved. Two canonical representations for Laurent binomial difference ideals are given using the reduced Groebner basis of Z[x]-lattices and regular and coherent difference ascending chains, respectively. Criteria for a Laurent binomial difference ideal to be reflexive, prime, well-mixed, perfect, and toric are given in terms of their support lattices which are Z[x]-lattices. The reflexive, well-mixed, and perfect closures of a Laurent binomial difference ideal are shown to be binomial. Four equivalent definitions for toric difference varieties are presented. Finally, algorithms are given to check whether a given Laurent binomial difference ideal I is reflexive, prime, well-mixed, perfect, or toric, and in the negative case, to compute the reflexive, well-mixed, and perfect closures of I. An algorithm is given to decompose a finitely generated perfect binomial difference ideal as the intersection of reflexive prime binomial difference ideals.

Integral canonical models of exceptional Shimura varieties

Abstract:We prove that Shimura varieties admit integral canonical models for sufficiently large primes. In the case of abelian-type Shimura varieties, this recovers work of Kisin-Kottwitz for sufficiently large primes. We also prove the existence of integral canonical models for images of period maps corresponding to geometric families. We deduce several consequences from this, including an unramified rigid analogue of Borel's extension theorem, a version of Tate semisimplicity, CM lifting theorems, and a weakened version of Tate's isogeny theorem for ordinary points.
