Abstract:Dissipative estimator (observer) design for continuous time-delay systems poses a significant challenge when an unlimited number of pointwise and general distributed delays (DDs) are concerned. We propose an effective solution to this semi-open problem using the Krasovski\uı functional (KF) framework in conjunction with a quadratic supply rate function, where both the plant and the estimator can accommodate an unlimited number of pointwise and general distributed delays with an unlimited number of square-integrable kernels. A key contribution is the introduction of a control concept called Kronecker-Seuret Decomposition (KSD) for matrix-valued functions, which allows for the factorizations or approximations of any DD integral kernel without introducing conservatism. Moreover, using KSD facilitates the construction of complete-type KFs with integral kernels that can contain any number of weakly differentiable and linearly independent functions. Our proposed solution is formulated as sequential convex SDP problems and is set out in two theorems along with an off-line iterative algorithm, which eliminates the need for nonlinear numerical solvers. We show the effectiveness of our method using two challenging numerical experiments, including a system stabilized by a non-smooth controller.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to design dissipative estimators (observers) in continuous - time delay systems containing an infinite number of point delays and general distributed delays (DDs). The main challenge in state estimation for this type of system lies in how to design an effective estimator to meet performance goals when there are an infinite number of point delays and general distributed delays in the system. Specifically, the paper focuses on how to use the Krasovski ̆ı functional (KF) framework combined with quadratic supply - rate functions to design systems and estimators that can handle an infinite number of square - integrable kernels under these complex delay structures. In addition, the paper also proposes a new control concept - Kronecker - Seuret decomposition (KSD) for factoring or approximating matrix - valued functions without introducing conservatism. Through this method, a complete type of KFs containing any number of weakly differentiable and linearly independent functions can be constructed, thereby solving this semi - open problem and formulating it as a sequential convex SDP problem, which is finally implemented through two theorems and an offline iterative algorithm, eliminating the need for nonlinear numerical solvers. The paper verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method through two challenging numerical experiments, one of which involves a system stabilized by a non - smooth controller.
