Abstract:We study the statistics of matrix elements of local operators in the basis of energy eigenstates in a paradigmatic integrable many-particle quantum theory, the Lieb-Liniger model of bosons with repulsive delta-function interaction. Using methods of quantum integrability we determine the scaling of matrix elements with system size. As a consequence of the extensive number of conservation laws the structure of matrix elements is fundamentally different from, and much more intricate than, the predictions of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis for generic models. We uncover an interesting connection between this structure for local operators in interacting integrable models, and the one for local operators that are not local with respect to the elementary excitations in free theories. We find that typical off-diagonal matrix elements $\langle\boldsymbol{\mu}|O|\boldsymbol{\lambda}\rangle$ in the same macro-state scale as $\exp(-c^{ O}L\ln(L)-LM^{O}_{\boldsymbol{\mu},\boldsymbol{\lambda}})$ where the probability distribution function for $M^{O}_{\boldsymbol{\mu},\boldsymbol{\lambda}}$ are well described by Fréchet distributions and $c^{O}$ depends only on macro-state information. In contrast, typical off-diagonal matrix elements between two different macro-states scale as $\exp(-d^{ O}L^2)$, where $d^{O}$ depends only on macro-state information. Diagonal matrix elements depend only on macro-state information up to finite-size corrections.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to study the statistical properties of matrix elements of local operators in the basis of energy eigenstates in integrable models. Specifically, the authors focus on the boson system in the Lieb - Liniger model, which describes bosons with repulsive δ - function interactions. Through the method of quantum integrability, they explore the scaling behavior of matrix elements with the system size. Due to the existence of a large number of conservation laws in integrable models, the structure of their matrix elements is significantly different from the predictions in general models (such as the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis ETH) and is more complex. ### Main problems of the paper 1. **Research background**: - Understanding the problem of the evolution of multi - particle quantum systems from non - equilibrium to equilibrium statistical mechanics has always been a long - term challenge in theoretical physics. - The eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) is one of the keys to current understanding, which links thermalization in general quantum systems to the statistical properties of matrix elements of local operators in energy eigenstates. 2. **Research motivation**: - ETH is applicable to "general" models without other local density conservation laws except energy. - For integrable models with a large number of conservation laws, ETH needs to be modified. In particular, ETH does not hold in non - interacting theories. - This has inspired research interest in the statistical properties of matrix elements in integrable models. 3. **Research object**: - The authors choose the Lieb - Liniger model as the research object because this model is equivalent to non - interacting theories at specific parameter points and can calculate matrix elements of large - scale systems. 4. **Research method**: - Use the method of quantum integrability to calculate matrix elements of local operators in the basis of energy eigenstates. - Focus on the scaling behavior of matrix elements with the system size. 5. **Main findings**: - Typical off - diagonal matrix elements scale in the form of \(\exp(-c_O L\ln(L)-L M_{\mu,\lambda})\) within the same macro - state, where the probability distribution function of \(M_{\mu,\lambda}\) can be described by the Fréchet distribution, and \(c_O\) only depends on macro - state information. - Typical off - diagonal matrix elements between different macro - states scale as \(\exp(-d_O L^2)\), where \(d_O\) also only depends on macro - state information. - Diagonal matrix elements depend on macro - state information only under finite - size corrections. ### Paper structure - **Introduction**: Introduce the research background and motivation. - **Properties of energy eigenstates in integrable models**: Review energy eigenstates in free and interacting theories and their macro - state concepts. - **Generating micro - states of a given macro - state**: Discuss how to efficiently generate micro - states belonging to a given macro - state. - **Local operators**: Introduce the local operators considered in the research. - **Diagonal matrix elements in free theories**: Analyze diagonal matrix elements of local operators in free theories. - **Off - diagonal matrix elements in free theories**: Analyze off - diagonal matrix elements of local operators in free theories. - **Matrix elements in interacting theories**: Analyze matrix elements of local operators in interacting theories. - **Summary and conclusion**: Summarize the research results and discuss future research directions. ### Main contributions - Through the method of quantum integrability, the statistical properties of matrix elements of local operators in the Lieb - Liniger model are studied in detail. - Reveal the complex structure of matrix elements in integrable models, especially the differences from the predictions of ETH. - Provide specific results on the scaling behavior of diagonal and off - diagonal matrix elements with the system size.
