Abstract:We show that the far--field pattern of a scattered electromagnetic field corresponding to a single incoming plane--wave uniquely determines a bounded supraconductive planar screen. This generalises a previous scalar result of Blåsten, Päivärinta and Sadique.

Abstract:The electromagnetic scattering by an array of finite cylindrically curved thin screens is investigated in this paper, and the normally incident plane wave can be either TMz- or TEz-polarised. The mathematical treatment here is based on the direct integral equation technique combined with the Galerkin's procedure, and the induced currents on the curved thin screens or apertures are expanded in terms of a series of Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind. Furthermore, the far-zone field solutions to such a multiple coupling system are obtained in an analytical form, and parametric calculations are performed to show the variation of the scattered far-zone field distributions at both TMz- and TEz-polarisation incidences.

Abstract:We study the inverse scattering from a screen with using only one incoming time--harmonic plane wave but with measurements of the scattered wave done at all directions. Especially we focus on the 2D--case i.e. (inverse) scattering from an open bounded smooth curve. Besides the inverse scattering problem we also study the inverse electrostatic problem. We then show that one Cauchy--data of any continuous and bounded function vanishing on the screen and harmonic outside it, determines the screen uniquely.

Abstract:A generalized mathematical procedure is presented for investigating the electromagnetic response characteristics of multiple cylindrically curved thin screens excited by a line electric current source, and the mathematical treatment is based on the direct integral equation technique combined with Galerkin's procedure. Both the near- and the far-zone field solutions to such a multiple coupling system are obtained in an analytical form, and the induced electric currents on the curved thin screens are expanded in terms of a series of Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind. Abstract:It is proved that a convex polyhedral scatterer of impedance type can be uniquely determined by the electric far-field pattern of a nonvanishing incident field. The incoming wave is allowed to be an electromagnetic plane wave, a vector Herglotz wave function, or a point source wave incited by some magnetic dipole. Our proof relies on the reflection principle for Maxwell's equations with the impedance (or Leontovich) boundary condition enforcing on a hyperplane. We prove that it is impossible to analytically extend the total field across any vertex of the scatterer. This leads to a data-driven inversion scheme for imaging an arbitrary convex polyhedron.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the inverse electromagnetic scattering by a two-layered medium in the non-magnetic case. We prove that both the electric permittivity and the conductivity can be uniquely recovered in an unknown annular domain by the internal wave-field measurements at one fixed frequency, if and are both assumed to be constant. Furthermore, we prove that the unknown annular domain can be also uniquely recovered using the same measurements. The method proposed in this paper essentially depends on the uniform a priori estimate for the scattered magnetic field in the sense when the incident fields are induced by a sequence of deformed electric dipoles. Another important ingredient for our method is to reconstruct well-defined PDE systems in a sufficiently small domain by using the solutions to the electromagnetic scattering problem in the two-layered cavity.

Abstract:Multiple scattering of an E-polarisation plane wave from multiple cylindrical strips is investigated using the technique of the direct integral equation. The induced surface currents on multiple perfectly conducting strips are expanded in the form of a series of Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind. By using Galerkin's procedure, all the unknown expanding coefficients are determined by a set of matrix equations of infinite order, and then numerical results are presented to show tbe characteristics of the copolarised far-zone field changing with the angular width and number of strips as well as their relative orientations.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the unique identification of the shape of a scatterer through a single far-field pattern in an inverse elastic medium scattering problem with a generalized transmission boundary condition. The uniqueness issue by a single far-field measurement is a challenging problem in inverse scattering theory, which has a long and colorful history. In this paper, we demonstrate the well-posedness of the direct problem by the variational approach. We establish the uniqueness results by a single far-field measurement under a generic scenario when dealing with underlying elastic scatterers exhibiting polygonal-nest or polygonal-cell structures. Furthermore, for a polygonal-nest or polygonal-cell structure scatterer associated with density and boundary impedance parameters as piecewise constants, we show that these physical quantities can be uniquely determined simultaneously by a single far-field measurement. The corresponding proof relies heavily on examining the singular behaviour of a coupled PDE system near a corner in a microlocal manner.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider inverse time-harmonic acoustic and electromagnetic scattering from locally perturbed rough surfaces in three dimensions. The scattering interface is supposed to be the graph of a Lipschitz continuous function with compact support. It is proved that an acoustically sound-soft or sound-hard surface can be uniquely determined by the far-field pattern of infinite number of incident plane waves with distinct directions. Moreover, a single point source or plane wave can be used to uniquely determine a scattering surface of polyhedral type. These uniqueness results apply to Maxwell equations with the perfectly conducting boundary condition. Our arguments rely on the mixed reciprocity relation in a half space and the reflection principle for Helmholtz and Maxwell equations.

Abstract:This paper considers the inverse problem of scattering of time-harmonic acoustic and electromagnetic plane waves by a bounded, inhomogeneous, penetrable obstacle with embedded objects inside. A new method is proposed to prove that the inhomogeneous penetrable obstacle can be uniquely determined from the far-field pattern at a fixed frequency, disregarding its contents. Our method is based on constructing a well-posed interior transmission problem in a small domain associated with the Helmholtz or modified Helmholtz equation and the Maxwell or modified Maxwell equations. A key role is played by the smallness of the domain which ensures that the lowest transmission eigenvalue is large so that a given wave number k is not an eigenvalue of the interior transmission problem. Another ingredient in our proofs is a priori estimates of solutions to the transmission scattering problems with data in Lp (1<p<2), which are established in this paper by using the integral equation method. A main feature of the new method is that it can deal with the acoustic and electromagnetic cases in a unified way and can be easily applied to deal with inverse scattering by unbounded rough interfaces.

Abstract:This work is concerned with the unique determination of a periodic diffraction grating profile in three dimensions by some scattered electromagnetic fields measured above the grating. In general, it is well known that global uniqueness may not be true when the measurement is only taken for one incident field. Our goal is to completely characterize the global uniqueness properties when the periodic structure is of polyhedral type. Corresponding to each incident plane wave, we are able to classify all unidentifiable structures into three classes and show that any periodic polyhedral structure can be uniquely determined by one incident field if and only if it belongs to none of the three classes. Consequently, the minimum number of incident waves required for the unique determination of a periodic polyhedral structure can be easily read.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the inverse electromagnetic scattering by a 2D (impenetrable or penetrable) smooth periodic curve. Precisely, we establish global uniqueness results on the inverse problem of determining the grating profile from the scattered fields corresponding to a countably infinite number of quasiperiodic incident waves. For the case of an impenetrable and partially coated perfectly reflecting grating, we prove that the grating profile and its physical property can be uniquely determined from the scattered field measured above the periodic structure. For the case of a penetrable grating, we show that the periodic interface can be uniquely recovered by the scattered field measured only above the interface. A key ingredient in our proofs is a novel mixed reciprocity relation that is derived in this paper for the periodic structures and seems to be new. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:Electromagnetic scattering from three-dimensional chiral objects above a perfectly electric or magnetic conducting plane (PEC and PMC) is analyzed by the hybrid finite element-boundary integral (FEM-BI) method. The chiral image principle is used to transform the original single chiral target in half space into two chiral targets with the same permittivity and permeability yet conjugate chirality parameters. Numerical examples demonstrate that the FEM-BI method provides a flexible and powerful solution of multiple scattering from inhomogeneous chiral objects. Both near field distribution and radar cross section (RCS) of chiral objects illuminated by plane waves are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the hybrid method.

Abstract:Consider the problem of scattering of electromagnetic waves by a doubly periodic structure. The medium above the structure is assumed to be inhomogeneous characterized completely by an index of refraction. Below the structure is a perfect conductor or an imperfect conductor partially coated with a dielectric. Having established the well-posedness of the direct problem by the variational approach, we prove the uniqueness of the inverse problem, that is, the unique determination of the doubly periodic grating with its physical property and the index of refraction from a knowledge of the scattered near field by a countably infinite number of incident quasi-periodic electromagnetic waves. A key ingredient in our proofs is a novel mixed reciprocity relation derived in this paper.

Abstract:In this paper, a field reconstruction method based on plane wave spectrum is proposed. The electromagnetic field distribution below the shielding plane is derived by the electromagnetic field above the shielding plane. This method is validated by a simulation example. According to simulation result, the reconstructed field of proposed method is of high accuracy. This method is of great significance in electromagnetic interference diagnosis.

Abstract:Near field scanning is one of the most useful methods for electromagnetic interference (EMI) diagnosis. However, large scanning points and long scanning time are the major obstacles when the device under test is complex. To resolve the issue, a novel hybrid method including two steps to quickly predict the near field pattern of an unknown EMI source is proposed. The first step is to reconstruct a full field pattern from a sparse scanning using the joint Schatten p-norm and Lp-norm method, where less sampling points are required on the original scanning plane. The second step is the near-near field transformation based on the plane wave spectrum method. It uses one single field pattern to derive the field distributions on multiplanes around the EMI source by introducing a calibration factor. The source reconstruction method in the second step can also be used to predict far field and coupled power to the victim circuit. Both simulation and experimental examples have validated the feasibility of the proposed method.

Abstract:The reflecting and transmitting effects of a planar unidirectionally conducting screen are analyzed based on the accurate closed-form expression for electric field of an arbitrarily oriented electric dipole.For a dipole oriented along the wire elements of the screen,the screen acts as a perfectly electrically conducting plane.For a dipole perpendicular to the wire elements,the fields reflected by the screen can be interpreted as the contribution of an image dipole and image transmission-line current source,while the transmitted field is arisen from image transmission-line source.The expressions of related surface waves are derived and can be compared with previous results.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with inverse scattering problems of determining the support of an isotropic and homogeneous penetrable body from knowledge of multi-static far-field patterns in acoustics and in linear elasticity. The normal derivative of the total fields admits no jump on the interface of the scatterer in the trace sense. If the contrast function of the refractive index function or the density function has a positive lower bound near the boundary, we propose a hyper-singular source method to prove uniqueness of inverse scattering with all incoming plane waves at a fixed energy. It is based on subtle analysis on the leading part of the scattered field when hyper-singular sources caused by the first derivative of the fundamental solution approach to a boundary point. As a by-product, we show that this hyper-singular method can be also used to determine the boundary value of a Holder continuous refractive index function in acoustics or a Holder continuous density function in linear elasticity.

Abstract:We present a complete derivation of the formula of Smythe [Phys.Rev.72, 1066 (1947)] giving the electromagnetic field diffracted by an aperture created in a perfectly conducting plane surface. The reasoning, valid for any excitating field and any hole shape, makes use only of the free scalar Green function for the Helmoltz equation without any reference to a Green dyadic formalism. We compare our proof with the one previously given by Jackson and connect our reasoning to the general Huygens Fresnel theorem.

Abstract:This article is concerned with uniqueness for reconstructing a periodic inhomogeneous medium sitting on a perfectly conducting plate. We deal with the problem in the framework of time-harmonic Maxwell systems without TE or TM polarization. An orthogonal relation is obtained for two refractive indices and then used to prove that the refractive index can be uniquely identified from a knowledge of the incident fields and the total tangential electric field on a plane above the inhomogeneous medium, utilizing the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of a quasi-periodic Sturm-Liouville eigenvalue problem.
