Abstract:In this paper, we analyse the circumstances in which the adjoint Gabor system is an R-dual of a given Gabor frame in the context of separable uniform time-frequency lattices in locally compact abelian groups. In this regard, we also prove a necessary condition for a Gabor Bessel sequence in this setting to be complete.

Abstract:Weak R-duals, a generalization of R-duals, were recently introduced; for which duality relations were established. In this paper, we consider the problem of characterizing a given frame sequence to be a weak R-dual of a given frame. Further, we apply these characterization results to the Gabor frame setting and prove that the weak R-duality of the adjoint Gabor system leads to the R-duality of the same, thereby indicating an approach to answer the famous problem of the adjoint Gabor system being an R-dual of a given Gabor frame.

Abstract:We introduce an equivalence relation on the set of lattices in $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$ such that equivalent lattices support identical structures of Gabor systems, up to unitary equivalence, a notion we define. These equivalence classes are parameterized by symplectic forms on $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$ and they consist of lattices related by symplectic transformations. This implies that $2d^2 - d$ parameters suffice to describe the possible structures of Gabor systems over lattices in $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$, as opposed to the $4d^2$ degrees of freedom in the choice of lattice. We also prove that (modulo a minor complication related to complex conjugation) symplectic transformations are the only linear transformations of the time-frequency plane which implement equivalences of this kind, thereby characterizing symplectic transformations as the structure-preserving transformations of the time-frequency plane in the context of Gabor analysis. In addition, we investigate the equivalence classes that have separable lattices as representatives and find that the parameter space in this case is $d^2$-dimensional. We provide an explicit example showing that non-separable lattices with irrational lattice points can behave exactly like separable and rational ones. This approach also allows us to formulate and prove a higher-dimensional variant of the Lyubarskii-Seip-Wallstén Theorem for Gaussian Gabor frames. This gives us, for a large class of lattices in $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$ (including all symplectic ones), necessary and sufficient conditions for $d$-parameter families of Gaussians to generate Gabor frames.

Abstract:The concept of R-duals of a sequence was first introduced with the motivation to obtain a general version of duality principle in Gabor analysis. Since then, various R-duals (types II, III, IV) and some relaxations of the R-dual setup have been introduced and studied by some mathematicians. All these “R-duals” provide a powerful tool in the analysis of duality relations in general frame theory. It is of independent interest in mathematics and far beyond the duality principle in Gabor analysis. Observe that the underlying sequences of a R-dual are a pair of orthonormal bases. In this paper we introduce the concept of weak R-duals based on a pair of Parseval frames. It is a new relaxation of the R-dual setup. We obtain a characterization of frames based on their weak R-duals, and prove that the weak R-dual of a frame (Riesz basis) is a frame sequence (frame). We also characterize (unitarily) equivalent frames in terms of weak R-duals. Finally, we present an explicit expression of the canonical duals of weak R-duals.

Abstract:Since the introduction of R-duals by Casazza, Kutyniok and Lammers with the motivation to obtain a general version of duality principle in Gabor analysis, various R-duals and some relaxations of the R-dual setup have been introduced and studied by some mathematicians. They provide a powerful tool in the analysis of duality relations in general frame theory, and are far beyond the duality principle in Gabor analysis. In this paper, we introduce the concept of generalized weak R-dual based on a pair of frames which is a relaxation of the R-dual setup. Using generalized weak R-duals, we characterize the frame properties of a sequence and the equivalence between two frames, prove that the generalized weak R-duals of frames (Riesz bases) are frame sequences (frames), and present a coefficient expression corresponding to the canonical duals of generalized weak R-duals. Some examples are provided to illustrate the generality of the theory.

Abstract:Finding general and verifiable conditions which imply that Gabor systems are (resp. cannot be) Gabor frames is among the core problems in Gabor analysis. In their paper on atomic decompositions for coorbit spaces [H.G. Feichtinger and K. Gröchenig, Banach spaces related to integrable group representations, and their atomic decomposition, I, J. Funct. Anal. 86 (1989), 307–340], the authors proved that every Gabor system generated with a relatively uniformly discrete and sufficiently dense time-frequency sequence will allow series expansions for a large class of Banach spaces if the window function is nice enough. In particular, such a Gabor system is a frame for the Hilbert space of square integrable functions. However, their proof is based on abstract analysis and does not give direct information on how to determine the density in the sense of directly applicable estimates. It is the goal of this paper to present a constructive version of the proof and to provide quantitative results. Specifically, we give a criterion for the general case and explicit density for some cases. We also study the existence of Gabor frames and show that there is some smooth window function such that the corresponding Gabor system is incomplete for arbitrary time-frequency lattices.

Abstract:Recently, duality principles in g-frame theory were studied. This paper addresses a relaxation of g-R-duals. We introduce the notion of weak g-R-dual in g-frame theory setting, and present the link between frame properties of a bounded operator sequence and its weak g-R-duals. Using weak g-R-duals, we characterize g-frames and (unitary) equivalence between g-frames. And using pseudo-inverse operators, we represent the canonical duals of weak g-R-duals. Some examples are also provided.

Abstract:We investigate the structural properties of dual systems for nonstationary Gabor frames. In particular, we prove that some inverse nonstationary Gabor frame operators admit a Walnut-like representation, i.e. the operator acting on a function can be described by weighted translates of that function, even when the original frame operator is not diagonal. In this case, which only occurs when compactly supported window functions are used, the canonical dual frame partially inherits the structure of the original frame, with differences that we describe in detail. Moreover, we determine a sufficient condition for a pair of nonstationary Gabor frames to form dual frames. The equivalence of this condition to the duality of the involved systems is shown under some weak restrictions. It is then applied in a simple setup, to prove the existence of dual pairs of nonstationary Gabor systems with non-diagonal frame operator. A discussion of the results, restricted to the classical case of regular Gabor systems, precedes the statement of the general results. Here, we also explore a connection to recent work of Christensen, Kim and Kim on Gabor frames with compactly supported window function.

Abstract:The image of a given orthonormal basis for a separable Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ under a bijective, bounded, and linear operator acting on $\mathcal{H}$ is called a Riesz basis of $\mathcal{H}$. Contrary to what happens with Riesz bases (in the usual sense) in separable Hilbert spaces, it is not true in general that the image of a matrix-valued orthonormal basis under a bounded, linear, and bijective operator on $L^2(G, \mathbb{C}^{s\times r})$ is also a basis and frame for the space $L^2(G, \mathbb{C}^{s\times r})$, where $G$ is a $\sigma$-compact and metrizable locally compact abelian (LCA) group. We give some classes of operators for the construction of matrix-valued Riesz bases from orthonormal bases of the space $L^2(G, \mathbb{C}^{s\times r})$. Motivated by a result due to Holub, we show that a bounded, linear, and bijective operator acting on $L^2(G, \mathbb{C}^{s\times r})$ which is adjointable with respect to the matrix-valued inner product is positive if and only if it maps a matrix-valued Riesz basis of the space $L^2(G, \mathbb{C}^{s\times r})$ to its dual Riesz basis.

Abstract:In this article, we discuss subspace duals of a frame of translates by an action of a closed abelian subgroup $\Gamma$ of a locally compact group $\mathscr G.$ These subspace duals are not required to lie in the space generated by the frame. We characterise translation-generated subspace duals of a frame/Riesz basis involving the Zak transform for the pair $(\mathscr G, \Gamma) .$ We continue our discussion on the orthogonality of two translation-generated Bessel pairs using the Zak transform, which allows us to explore the dual of super-frames. As an example, we extend our findings to splines, Gabor systems, $p$-adic fields $\mathbb Q p,$ locally compact abelian groups using the fiberization map.

Abstract:Duality principles in Gabor theory such as the Ron–Shen duality principle and theWexler–Raz biorthogonality relations play a fundamental role for analyzing Gabor systems. In thisarticle we present a general approach to derive duality principles in abstract frame theory. Foreach sequence in a separable Hilbert space we define a corresponding sequence dependent onlyon two orthonormal bases. Then we characterize exactly properties of the first sequence in termsof the associated one, which yields duality relations for the abstract frame setting. In the last partwe apply our results to Gabor systems.

Abstract:We extend Yosida's 1941 version of Stone-Gelfand duality to metrically complete unital lattice-ordered groups that are no longer required to be real vector spaces. This calls for a generalised notion of compact Hausdorff space whose points carry an arithmetic character to be preserved by continuous maps. The arithmetic character of a point is (the complete isomorphism invariant of) a metrically complete additive subgroup of the real numbers containing $1$, namely, either $\frac{1}{n}\mathbb{Z}$ for an integer $n = 1, 2, \dots$, or the whole of $\mathbb{R}$. The main result needed to establish the extended duality theorem is a substantial generalisation of Urysohn's Lemma to such "arithmetic" compact Hausdorff spaces. The original duality is obtained by considering the full subcategory of spaces whose each point is assigned the entire group of real numbers. In the introduction we indicate motivations from and connections with the theory of dimension groups.

Abstract:Starting from the study of pseudodifferential operators with completely periodic symbols, we obtain results of continuity and invertibility of a class of Gabor operators on time-frequency invariant Banach spaces. As an applications we find sufficient conditions for the existence of Gabor frames on the space of square integrable functions, associated to a general lattice.

Abstract:In this paper a sampling theory for unitary invariant subspaces associated to locally compact abelian (LCA) groups is deduced. Working in the LCA group context allows to obtain, in a unified way, sampling results valid for a wide range of problems which are interesting in practice, avoiding also cumbersome notation. Along with LCA groups theory, the involved mathematical technique is that of frame theory which meets matrix analysis when appropriate dual frames are computed.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a second-countable amenable group with a uniform $k$-approximate lattice $\Lambda$. For a projective discrete series representation $(\pi, \mathcal{H}_{\pi})$ of $G$ of formal degree $d_{\pi} > 0$, we show that $D^-(\Lambda) \geq d_{\pi} / k$ is necessary for the coherent system $\pi(\Lambda) g$ to be complete in $\mathcal{H}_{\pi}$. In addition, we show that if $\pi(\Lambda^2) g$ is minimal, then $D^+ (\Lambda^2) \leq d_{\pi} k$. Both necessary conditions recover sharp density theorems for uniform lattices and are new even for Gabor systems in $L^2 (\mathbb{R})$. As an application of the approach, we also obtain necessary density conditions for coherent frames and Riesz sequences associated to general discrete sets. All results are valid for amenable unimodular groups of possibly exponential growth.

Abstract:For $\alpha>0$, the Bargmann projection $P_\alpha$ is the orthogonal projection from $L^2(\gamma_\alpha)$ onto the holomorphic subspace $L^2_{hol}(\gamma_\alpha)$, where $\gamma_\alpha$ is the standard Gaussian probability measure on $\C^n$ with variance $(2\alpha)^{-n}$. The space $L^2_{hol}(\gamma_\alpha)$ is classically known as the Segal-Bargmann space. We show that $P_\alpha$ extends to a bounded operator on $L^p(\gamma_{\alpha p/2})$, and calculate the exact norm of this scaled $L^p$ Bargmann projection. We use this to show that the dual space of the $L^p$-Segal-Bargmann space $L^p_{hol}(\gamma_{\alpha p/2})$ is an $L^{p'}$ Segal-Bargmann space, but with the Gaussian measure scaled differently: $(L^p_{hol}(\gamma_{\alpha p/2}))^* \cong L^{p'}_{hol}(\gamma_{\alpha p'/2})$ (this was shown originally by Janson, Peetre, and Rochberg). We show that the Bargmann projection controls this dual isomorphism, and gives a dimension-independent estimate on one of the two constants of equivalence of the norms.

Abstract:Let $S$ be a non-empty, closed subspace of a locally compact group $G$ that is a subsemigroup of $G$. Suppose that $X, Y$, and $Z$ are Banach lattices that are vector sublattices of the order dual $\mathrm{C}_{\mathrm{c}}(S,\mathbb R)^\sim$ of the real-valued, continuous functions with compact support on $S$, and where $Z$ is Dedekind complete. Suppose that $\ast: X\times Y\to Z$ is a positive bilinear map such that $\mathrm{supp}\,{(x \ast y)}\subseteq\mathrm{supp}\,{x}\,\cdot\,\mathrm{supp}\,{y}$ for all $x\in X^+$ and $y\in Y^+$ with compact support. We show that, under mild conditions, the canonically associated map from $X$ into the vector lattice of regular operators from $Y$ into $Z$ is then a lattice homomorphism. Applications of this result are given in the context of convolutions, answering questions previously posed in the literature. As a preparation, we show that the order dual of the continuous, compactly supported functions on a closed subspace of a locally compact space can be canonically viewed as an order ideal of the order dual of the continuous, compactly supported functions on the larger space. As another preparation, we show that $\mathrm{L}^p$-spaces and Banach lattices of measures on a locally compact space can be embedded as vector sublattices of the order dual of the continuous, compactly supported functions on that space.
