Abstract:The classical way of extending an $[n, k, d]$ linear code $\C$ is to add an overall parity-check coordinate to each codeword of the linear code $\C$. This extended code, denoted by $\overline{\C}(-\bone)$ and called the standardly extended code of $\C$, is a linear code with parameters $[n+1, k, \bar{d}]$, where $\bar{d}=d$ or $\bar{d}=d+1$. This is one of the two extending techniques for linear codes in the literature. The standardly extended codes of some families of binary linear codes have been studied to some extent. However, not much is known about the standardly extended codes of nonbinary codes. For example, the minimum distances of the standardly extended codes of the nonbinary Hamming codes remain open for over 70 years. The first objective of this paper is to introduce the nonstandardly extended codes of a linear code and develop some general theory for this type of extended linear codes. The second objective is to study this type of extended codes of a number of families of linear codes, including cyclic codes and nonbinary Hamming codes. Four families of distance-optimal or dimension-optimal linear codes are obtained with this extending technique. The parameters of certain extended codes of many families of linear codes are settled in this paper.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The main problem that this paper attempts to solve is about the extension of linear codes, especially the research on non - standard extended codes. Specifically, the objectives of the paper can be summarized as follows: 1. **Introducing non - standard extended codes**: The paper first introduces the non - standard extension method of linear codes and develops the general theory of such extended codes. The traditional extension method is to extend linear codes by adding an overall parity - check bit, while the paper proposes a new extension method, namely non - standard extended codes. 2. **Studying non - standard extended codes of specific linear code families**: The paper further studies the non - standard extended codes of several types of linear codes (including cyclic codes and non - binary Hamming codes) and explores the parameters and properties of these extended codes. 3. **Constructing linear code families with optimal parameters**: Through non - standard extension techniques, the paper constructs multiple linear code families with optimal distance or optimal dimension. These codes have important application values in coding theory. 4. **Solving open problems**: The paper aims to solve an open problem, that is, given a linear code \(C\) and a vector \(u\), how to determine the parameters of the extended code \(C(u)\). Through a series of theoretical results and specific analyses, the paper partially solves this problem. ### Specific problems and solutions - **Insufficient research on standard extended codes**: Existing literature has less research on standard extended codes \(C(- 1)\), especially little is known about the minimum distance and weight distribution of non - binary codes. By introducing non - standard extended codes, the paper fills this research gap. - **Superiority of non - standard extended codes**: The paper shows through specific examples that non - standard extended codes are more advantageous than standard extended codes in some cases. For example, some non - standard extended codes can have a larger minimum distance, fewer non - zero weights and more complex automorphism groups, and these characteristics make non - standard extended codes more useful in practical applications. - **Parameter analysis**: The paper analyzes in detail the extended code parameters of several infinite families of linear codes, especially the extended code parameters of non - binary Hamming codes. Through these analyses, the paper obtains multiple new linear code families with optimal parameters. ### Conclusion Through the research on non - standard extended codes, the paper not only enriches the theoretical basis of linear codes, but also provides new coding schemes for practical applications. By constructing linear codes with optimal parameters, the paper makes an important contribution to the development of coding theory.
