Abstract:The breakup of liquid threads into smaller droplets is a fundamental problem in fluid dynamics. In this study, we estimate the characteristic wavelength of the breakup process by means of many-body dissipative particle dynamics. This wavelength shows a power-law dependence on the Ohnesorge number in line with results from stability analysis. We also discover that the number of satellite droplets exhibits a power-law decay with exponent $0.72 \pm 0.04$ in the product of the Ohnesorge and thermal capillary numbers, while the overall size of main droplets is larger than that based on the characteristic wavelength thanks to the asynchronous breakup of the thread. Finally, we show that the formation of satellite droplets is the result of the advection of pinching points towards the main droplets in a remaining thinning neck, when the velocity gradient of the fluid exhibits two symmetric maxima.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper attempts to solve several key problems in the process of liquid filament breaking into small droplets, specifically including: 1. **Estimation of characteristic wavelength**: Through the Many - Body Dissipative Particle Dynamics (MDPD) method, the paper estimates the characteristic wavelength of the structures formed during the liquid filament breaking process and compares it with the theoretical predictions of stability analysis. The research shows that the characteristic wavelength has a power - law relationship with the Ohnesorge number (Oh), which is in line with theoretical expectations. 2. **Number and formation mechanism of satellite droplets**: The paper studies the formation processes of the main droplet and satellite droplets and finds that the number of satellite droplets decays in a power - law manner with the product of the Ohnesorge number and the Thermal Capillary Number (Th), with an exponent of 0.72 ± 0.04. In addition, the paper also reveals the mechanism of satellite droplet formation. That is, during the liquid filament breaking process, two symmetric points with the maximum velocity gradient move towards the main droplet, resulting in the formation of satellite droplets in the remaining thin - neck region. 3. **Size of the main droplet**: The paper points out that due to the asynchronous breaking of the liquid filament and the increase in viscosity, the actual size of the main droplet is usually larger than the size predicted based on the characteristic wavelength. This is because during the breaking process, some droplet precursors merge with neighboring droplets before separation, forming larger droplets. Through these studies, the paper aims to gain a deeper understanding of the microscopic mechanisms of liquid filament breaking, especially the breaking behavior under different fluid properties, thereby providing theoretical support and technical guidance for related applications (such as nano - printing, ink - jet printing, etc.).
