Abstract:We compute the exact partition function of the isotropic 6-vertex model on a cylinder geometry with free boundary conditions, for lattices of intermediate size, using Bethe ansatz and algebraic geometry. We perform the computations in both the open and closed channels. We also consider the partial thermodynamic limits, whereby in the open (closed) channel, the open (closed) direction is kept small while the other direction becomes large. We compute the zeros of the partition function in the two partial thermodynamic limits, and compare with the condensation curves.

Abstract:We compute the genus $0$ free energy for the $2$-matrix model with quartic interactions, which acts as a generating function for the Ising model's partition function on a random, $4$-regular, planar graph. This rigorously confirms the predictions of V.A. Kazakov and D.V. Boulatov on this model, and provides a new parametric formula for the free energy. We also give a characterization of the phase space of the model. Our analysis is based on a steepest descent Riemann-Hilbert analysis of the associated biorthogonal polynomials and the corresponding isomonodromic $\tau$-function. A key ingredient in the analysis is a parametrization of the spectral curve.

Abstract:In 1944 Lars Onsager published the exact partition function of the ferromagnetic Ising model on the infinite square lattice in terms of a definite integral. Only in the literature of the last decade, however, has it been recast in terms of special functions. Until now all known formulas for the partition function in terms of special functions have been restricted to the important special case of the isotropic Ising model with symmetric couplings. Indeed, the anisotropic model is more challenging because there are two couplings and hence two reduced temperatures, one for each of the two axes of the square lattice. Hence, standard special functions of one variable are inadequate to the task. Here, we reformulate the partition function of the anisotropic Ising model in terms of the Kamp\'e de F\'eriet function, which is a double hypergeometric function in two variables that is more general than the Appell hypergeometric functions. Finally, we present hypergeometric formulas for the generating function of multipolygons of given length on the infinite square lattice, for isotropic as well as anisotropic edge weights. For the isotropic case, the results allow easy calculation, to arbitrary order, of the celebrated series found by Cyril Domb.

Abstract:We give general conditions for the existence of a Hamiltonian operator whose discrete time evolution matches the partition function of certain solvable lattice models. In particular, we examine two classes of lattice models: the classical six-vertex model and a generalized family of $(2n+4)$-vertex models for each positive integer $n$. These models depend on a statistic called charge, and are associated to the quantum group $U_q(\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}}(1|n))$. Our results show a close and unexpected connection between Hamiltonian operators and the Yang-Baxter equation. The six-vertex model can be associated with Hamiltonians from classical Fock space, and we show that such a correspondence exists precisely when the Boltzmann weights are free fermionic. This allows us to prove that the free fermionic partition function is always a (skew) supersymmetric Schur function and then use the Berele-Regev formula to correct a result from of Brubaker, Bump, and Friedberg on the free fermionic domain-wall partition function. In this context, the supersymmetric function involution takes us between two lattice models that generalize the vicious walker and osculating walker models. Then, we prove a sharp solvability criterion for the six-vertex model with charge that provides the proper analogue of the free fermion condition. Building on results by Brubaker, Buciumas, Bump, and Gustafsson, we show that this criterion exactly dictates when a charged model has a Hamiltonian operator acting on a Drinfeld twist of $q$-Fock space. The resulting partition function is then a (skew) supersymmetric LLT polynomial, and almost all supersymmetric LLT polynomials appear as partition functions of our lattice models. We also prove a Cauchy identity for skew supersymmetric LLT polynomials. (see 2024 author's note below)

Abstract:In this paper we investigate certain fusion relations associated to an integrable vertex model on the square lattice which is invariant under $Sp(4)$ symmetry. We establish a set of functional relations which include a transfer matrix inversion identity. The solution of these relations in the thermodynamic limit allows us to compute the partition function per site of the fundamental $Sp(4)$ representation of the vertex model. As a byproduct we also obtain the partition function per site of a vertex model mixing the four and five dimensional representations of the $Sp(4)$ symmetry.

Abstract:We present a new efficient method to find the Ising problem partition function for finite lattice graphs embeddable on an arbitrary orientable surface, with integral coupling constants bounded in the absolute value by a polynomial of the size of the lattice graph. The algorithm has been implemented for toroidal lattices using modular arithmetic and the generalized nested dissection method. The implementation has substantially better performance than any other as far as we know.
Exact partition function of the Potts model on the Sierpinski gasket and the Hanoi lattice

Abstract:We present an analytic study of the Potts model partition function on the Sierpinski and Hanoi lattices, which are self-similar lattices of triangular shape with non integer Hausdorff dimension. Both lattices are examples of non-trivial thermodynamics in less than two dimensions, where mean field theory does not apply. We used and explain a method based on ideas of graph theory and renormalization group theory to derive exact equations for appropriate variables that are similar to the restricted partition functions. We benchmark our method with Metropolis Monte Carlo simulations. The analysis of fixed points reveals information of location of the Fisher zeros and we provide a conjecture about the location of zeros in terms of the boundary of the basins of attraction.

Abstract:In this work we study an elliptic solid-on-solid model with domain-wall boundaries having the elliptic quantum group $\mathcal{E}_{p, \gamma}[\widehat{\mathfrak{gl}_2}]$ as its underlying symmetry algebra. We elaborate on results previously presented by the author and extend our analysis to include continuous families of single determinantal representations for the model's partition function. Interestingly, our families of representations are parameterized by two continuous complex variables which can be arbitrarily chosen without affecting the partition function.

Solving the recursive relations, we obtain the explicit expression of the domain wall partition function of the model. In the trigonometric/rational limit, our results recover the corresponding ones for the six-vertex model.
Simplicial Lattice Study of the 2d Ising CFT

Abstract:I derive a formulation of the 2-dimensional critical Ising model on non-uniform simplicial lattices. Surprisingly, the derivation leads to a set of geometric constraints that a lattice must satisfy in order for the model to have a well-defined continuum limit. I perform Monte Carlo simulations of the critical Ising model on discretizations of several non-trivial manifolds including a twisted torus and a 2-sphere and I show that the simulations are in agreement with the 2d Ising CFT in the continuum limit. I discuss the inherent benefits of using non-uniform simplicial lattices to study quantum field theory and how the methods developed here can potentially be generalized for use with other theories.

Partition Rank and Partition Lattices

Abstract:We introduce a universal approach for applying the partition rank method, an extension of Tao's slice rank polynomial method, to tensors that are not diagonal. This is accomplished by generalizing Naslund's distinctness indicator to what we call a partition indicator. The advantages of partition indicators are two-fold: they diagonalize tensors that are constant when specified sets of variables are equal, and even in more general settings they can often substantially reduce the partition rank as compared to when a distinctness indicator is applied. The key to our discoveries is integrating the partition rank method with Möbius inversion on the lattice of partitions of a finite set. Through this we unify disparate applications of the partition rank method in the literature. We then use our theory to address a finite field analogue of a question of Erdős, thereby generalizing results of Hart and Iosevich and independently Shparlinski. Furthermore we generalize work of Pach, et al. on bounding sizes of sets avoiding right triangles to bounding sizes of sets avoiding right $k$-configurations.

Zeros of planar Ising models via flat SU(2) connections

Abstract:Livine and Bonzom recently proposed a geometric formula for a certain set of complex zeros of the partition function of the Ising model defined on planar graphs. Remarkably, the zeros depend locally on the geometry of an immersion of the graph in the three dimensional Euclidean space (different immersions give rise to different zeros). When restricted to the flat case, the weights become the critical weights on circle patterns. We rigorously prove the formula by geometrically constructing a null eigenvector of the Kac-Ward matrix whose determinant is the squared partition function. The main ingredient of the proof is the realisation that the associated Kac-Ward transition matrix gives rise to an SU(2) connection on the graph, creating a direct link with rotations in three dimensions. The existence of a null eigenvector turns out to be equivalent to this connection being flat.

Abstract:We study the scaling limit of a statistical system, which is a special case of the integrable inhomogeneous six-vertex model. It possesses $U_q\big(\mathfrak{sl}(2)\big)$ invariance due to the choice of open boundary conditions imposed. An interesting feature of the lattice theory is that the spectrum of scaling dimensions contains a continuous component. By applying the ODE/IQFT correspondence and the method of the Baxter $Q$ operator the corresponding density of states is obtained. In addition, the partition function appearing in the scaling limit of the lattice model is computed, which may be of interest for the study of nonrational CFTs in the presence of boundaries. As a side result of the research, a simple formula for the matrix elements of the $Q$ operator for the general, integrable, inhomogeneous six-vertex model was discovered, that has not yet appeared in the literature. It is valid for a certain one parameter family of diagonal open boundary conditions in the sector with the $z\,$-projection of the total spin operator being equal to zero.

Abstract:The Lee–Yang theorem for the zeroes of the partition function is not strictly applicable to quantum systems because the zeroes are defined in units of the fugacity ehΔτ, and the Euclidean-time lattice spacing Δτ can be divergent in the infrared (IR). We recently presented analytic arguments describing how a new space-Euclidean time zeroes expansion can be defined, which reproduces Lee and Yang's scaling but avoids the unresolved branch points associated with the breaking of nonlocal symmetries such as Parity. We now present a first numerical analysis for this new zeroes approach for a quantum spin chain system. We use our scheme to quantify the renormalization group flow of the physical lattice couplings to the IR fixed point of this system. We argue that the generic Finite-Size Scaling (FSS) function of our scheme is identically the entanglement entropy of the lattice partition function and, therefore, that we are able to directly extract the central charge, c, of the quantum spin chain system using conformal predictions for the scaling of the entanglement entropy.

Abstract:In this paper, firstly we show that the entropy constants of the number of independent sets on certain plane lattices are the same as the entropy constants of the corresponding cylindrical and toroidal lattices. Secondly, we consider three more complex lattices which can not be handled by a single transfer matrix as in the plane quadratic lattice case. By introducing the concept of transfer multiplicity, we obtain the lower and upper bounds of the entropy constants of crossed quadratic lattice, generalized aztec diamond lattice and 8-8-4 lattice.

Boundaries and Interfaces with Localized Cubic Interactions in the $O(N)$ Model

Abstract:We explore a new approach to boundaries and interfaces in the $O(N)$ model where we add certain localized cubic interactions. These operators are nearly marginal when the bulk dimension is $4-\epsilon$, and they explicitly break the $O(N)$ symmetry of the bulk theory down to $O(N-1)$. We show that the one-loop beta functions of the cubic couplings are affected by the quartic bulk interactions. For the interfaces, we find real fixed points up to the critical value $N_{\rm crit}\approx 7$, while for $N> 4$ there are IR stable fixed points with purely imaginary values of the cubic couplings. For the boundaries, there are real fixed points for all $N$, but we don't find any purely imaginary fixed points. We also consider the theories of $M$ pairs of symplectic fermions and one real scalar, which have quartic $OSp(1|2M)$ invariant interactions in the bulk. We then add the $Sp(2M)$ invariant localized cubic interactions. The beta functions for these theories are related to those in the $O(N)$ model via the replacement of $N$ by $1- 2M$. In the special case $M=1$, there are boundary or interface fixed points that preserve the $OSp(1|2)$ symmetry, as well as other fixed points that break it.

On the non-integrability of three dimensional Ising model

Abstract:It is well known that the partition function of two-dimensional Ising model can be expressed as a Grassmann integral over the action bilinear in Grassmann variables. The key aspect of the proof of this equivalence is to show that all polygons, appearing in Grassmann integration, enter with fixed sign. For three-dimensional model, the partition function can also be expressed by Grassmann integral. However, the action resulting from low-temperature expansion contains quartic terms, which does not allow explicit computation of the integral. We wanted to check - apparently not explored - the possibility that using the high-temperature expansion would result in action with only bilinear terms. (in two dimensions, low-T and high-T expansions are equivalent, but in three dimensions, they differ.) It turned out, however that polygons obtained by Grassman integration are not of fixed sign for any ordering of Grassmann variables on sites. This way, it is not possible to express the partition function of three-dimensional Ising model as a Grassman integral over bilinear action.

Geometric Formula for 2d Ising Zeros: Examples & Numerics

Abstract:A geometric formula for the zeros of the partition function of the inhomogeneous 2d Ising model was recently proposed in terms of the angles of 2d triangulations embedded in the flat 3d space. Here we proceed to an analytical check of this formula on the cubic graph, dual to a double pyramid, and provide a thorough numerical check by generating random 2d planar triangulations. Our method is to generate Delaunay triangulations of the 2-sphere then performing random local rescalings. For every 2d triangulations, we compute the corresponding Ising couplings from the triangle angles and the dihedral angles, and check directly that the Ising partition function vanishes for these couplings (and grows in modulus in their neighborhood). In particular, we lift an ambiguity of the original formula on the sign of the dihedral angles and establish a convention in terms of convexity/concavity. Finally, we extend our numerical analysis to 2d toroidal triangulations and show that the geometric formula does not work and will need to be generalized, as originally expected, in order to accommodate for non-trivial topologies.
